Need help deciding on which Mac to get? Macbook Air vs Macbook Pro Retina

Hey im new here, sorry if these questions get repetitive but im investing a lot of money and dont have much knowledge on computers so i came here. So my options are :
Option 1
13 inch Macbook Air
1.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
8GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
128GB PCIe-based flash storage
$1249.00
Option 2
13 inch Macbook Air
1.4GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz
8GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
256GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
$1299.00
Option 3
13 in Macbook pro Retina
2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
4GB 1600MHz memory
128GB PCIe-based flash storage1
Intel Iris Graphics
$1299.00
here is how i find myself as a computer user...
i use a computer everyday as a college student... a lot of microsoft programs and internet usage...
occasionally i use netflix but i find myself hooking it up to a tv if i watch or stream off my comp
here is my issue why do i need a retina if i can watch most things on tv now that they have internet integrated such as netflix youtube.
so what would be more useful more hard drive space with 8gb of ram or less harddrive space with faster processor
thank you in advance as this is my first post

I had the same question as I was starting grad school and my old MacBook Pro was just getting too tired and slow.
I visited the Apple store and spoke with four different employees and they each came to the same conclusion- separately- that the Pro was the way to go.
If you upgrade your flash like you mentioned you might want to do with the Air that's great, but with the pro upgrading your flash automatically upgrades your RAM as well, doubling you from 4 to 8. I kept going back and forth over what to do because the difference in price was significant, but ultimately more RAM makes for a much faster machine and it will work better, longer. It would most likely buy me another year or more of a well working machine over the Air.
Cost was definitely a factor me as well, but I was able to use the Education pricing, and I chose to buy refurbished.
Also, in terms of portability, the difference in weight is only half a pound. My roommate has the Air and I honestly feel no difference when I'm carrying hers or mine in my school bag. I'm really happy that I went with the Pro with Retina because even though I probably don't use half of the amazing features available on it, I always have the option to. Plus, not being much of a techie I have so much flash storage that I don't need to bother with my external hard drive anymore other than to backup my files. Really, really glad that I listened to the Geniuses!

  • MacBook Pro smell and need help deciding on which MacBook Pro to buy

So I bought a 17-inch MacBook Pro from my brother in August of 2009. He bought it in March of 2008. A couple days ago I noticed that my MacBook Pro has been releasing a really bad smell almost as if burning plastic. But the smell isn't that bad. What could be wrong with my MacBook Pro? I'm getting a New 15 or 13-inch MacBook Pro in June so idk if I should just not worry about it? And I need help deciding if I should get a high end 13-inch MacBook Pro or a low end 15-inch MacBook Pro?

What could be wrong with my MacBook Pro?
Take your computer to an Apple Store. The staff will be able to check as to the cause of the smell.

  • Need Help Deciding on a MAC Mini

    Hi All,
Quick question for the experts here, because, I am actually torn right now on spending some money for a new Mini.
I am currently using a 2006 iMac, 2.16Ghz Intel Core 2 DUO with an ATI Radeon X1600.
I do movie converting, HD TV streaming (Eye TV 250+) unit, some web surfing, Music conversions, and, stream Audio.Video from my iMac to my iPhone/iPad when I'm away from my house and Garageband Recording (usually an 8 to 10 track recording)
all seems to work well, but, within the last year, even after a full reinstall of OS X, things are starting to bog down. I am running Lion on it now, and, for the most part, it's "OK", but, I kinda think it could be a little snappier and a little faster.
So, I'm looking at buying the i7 MAC Mini.
My question is, will this be a step forward, or, is my iMac a little better? (I don't know. this might be a stupid question). Basically, will I notice a HUGE improvement.
As I type this, I have the MINI in my shopping cart and I am approved for the 1 year finance plan. All I need to do is click "Purchase", but, I wanted to get some opinions on this before going ahead with it.
Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated

Yes. I have a monitor ready for it. I also have an external CD/DVD Drive as the internal in my iMac hasn't been too reliable lately.
I agree about the price of apple's memory. What I did was, as soon as I ordered the Mini (Yes, I went ahead and ordered it. i couldn't wait any longer), I went to the crucial website and got an 8gb memeory kit for $37.00, so, I was pretty happy about that
Anyway, thanks for the reply. I figured I would notice an improvement as well. I'm thinking, ESPECIALLY with video conversions

I am trying to decide on which Mac laptop I should get

nobody can tell you without knowing your parameters of usage
If mostly photo and video editing (or a lot of same), then get a higher end pro.
If casual typical use, the Air is a powerhouse of which many are fooled by its slim size thinking it cannot do much, when in fact its a full powered notebook that amazes most people first time in use.
recommend 8GB min. RAM on either model.

That's because the Mac, OS X and the iLife apps that came preinstalled on the Mac all belong to the previous owner. The previous owner needs to call Apple care and have their Apple ID disassociated from the Mac. Then the hard drive needs to be totally erased and OS X and the iLife apps reinstalled using OS X Recovery.

If your info is correct you need to first buy Snow Leopard from the Apple on-line store ($20) install and update to 10.6.8 and then buy Lion from the App Store for $20.

  • Which is better for physical therapy graduate student, a MacBook air or MacBook pro?

Which is better for a physical therapy graduate student, a MacBook air or MacBook pro?

    Macbook Air
I cannot see you using strenuous applications to help you with a Physical Therapy Degree.
Have a think of whether you want an 11" or 13".
I'd recommend the 13" because although the 11" is perfect for taking notes in class etc.; when it comes to performing as a desktop and not sitting on your lap, it can seem too small.
The 13" is the best of both worlds. You can keep the portability and the power in one.
Make sure you get a large enough SSD, they always fill up fast with documents and possibly downloaded text books etc.
With the 13" if you decide to create a innovative project or a collection of photos, you can also use more RAM-consuming applications like iPhoto and iMovie, or even Aperture without worrying about freezing.

  • Need help deciding which adobe product to purchase (Photoshop or Illustrator)

    hello,
I am about to be given the task of creating the graphics for my company on a specific task.
We recently got a new printer to create cards with and before now, everyone has been running into trouble getting clean, accurately colored prints for these cards, and I am being given the task of creating them and need to decide what program I will need to achieve this.
What happens, is a company orders a set of cards and sends their graphic, which I will be receiving at a different size than will be needed for printing, so I need to enlarge it, which distorts the colors.
Also, on almost all of the images, I will be needing to add some words to the graphic before printing it, like the company name or address etc. but then occasionally, I am given some general images and generic instructions which I need to follow in order to create the graphic.
So, I was thinking that photoshop would help me to refill the colors after resizing an image, or when I need to create the graphic mostly myself, yet I will be having difficulty creating the words required.
But then illustrator would be giving me excelent fonts and words since its a vector program, yet I believe I will run into problems colorizing my graphics once resized.
So, what does everyone think would be the better option here?
Or what would be a good work around for either photoshop or illustrator that would help me resolve the problems arrising because I do not have the other?
Or what are some other potential problems I might possibly run into?

    Well exactally,
Being the economic misfortune that hit the country, my company doesn't have the funds to pay for a professional and they are trying to find a way to keep the project inside the building.
me being 20 years old and wishing to pursue a career in graphic design sees this as a great opportunity to learn alot about printmaking as well as how to use graphic editing programs on a level higher than taught in school.
My boss is wanting me, and going to pay for me, to go under several hours of training to accomplish what needs to be done, but like I said, I am given the task of trying to figure out what kind of software I am going to need for the task, which is why I am here asking about the programs.
Also, it is kind of my first attempt at trying to further understand exactally what each of the programs do, and so far, I have learned quite alot by searching around and asking what other people think.
So, If you don't find it to be too hard to put your opinions or thoughts about how I could best accomplish creating the cleanest cards I would greatly appreciate it.
    Sincerely,
    BeeHiver

  • Need help deciding if I should get a Macbook Air?

I should start off by saying that I currently own a 17" Macbook Pro with i5 2.53 GHz Dual Core Processor, 500GB Harddrive, and 4GB of Ram. I mostly use my macbook to go on the internet a lot, check email, and type up a Pages document and do research for school. I do have a couple games on my macbook like X-Plane 9 and I do have about 12 GB of music and 50GB of movies and about 450 Apps (Between iPhone and iPad) in iTunes. However I've recently been looking at getting a Macbook Air more and more. They are small, portable, and seem to be a little easier to handle. I'm just trying to figure out if it would be wise for me to switch? I WANT to sell my macbook pro and get an Air but i'm not sure if i'd still be able to do everything the same on it. I would definitely get the 13.3" with 256GB HD as I have used about 200GB on my current MAcbook Pro. As far as my movies and apps go, I have an External Harddrive that i could transfer it all too so im not concerned about that. But I would like to keep all my musci on the Air. Also, how is the volume/speakers on the Air? I tend to listen to YouTube and my musci quite a bit so this is important but difficult to test in stores. I tried one in A BEst Buy on full volume and it seemed good but I'd like to be sure. Also, should I grab an Air now or wait until July when everyone thinks that a new one will be released? Please any information would be extremely helpful. Thank you!

Wait until next month when Lion is released and the expected updates including SandyBridge (much faster) CPUs and Thunderbolt ports are announced before making up your mind is the best advise I can give.  Overall performance should improve, but there is a chance that the integrated Intel graphics that are a part of Sandy Bridge will be slower than the existing nVidia ones, but this is probably only applicable to gamers.  Wait and see and read review, then come back to your question.

  • NEED HELP WITH MICROSOFT office/Mac/hacking.

NEED HELP: We installed Parrallels, then Windows 8.1 and go to install Office 365 and the computer won't accept it.  We call Microsoft and they tell us our system has been hacked at the time we installed Windows 8.1.  HELP!!!!! I have got to get may computer fix NOW>>>> I have a bid due in 2 hours and can't get office on my computer and now have a hacked computer..........NOT HAPPY WITH MICROSOFT.  Please can someone help

Only Microsoft can help you get a Microsoft product working. But if what you need is software than can do most of what the various modules of MS Office can do, check out LibreOffice, which is an MS Office compatible Office suite, can run directly on the Mac (no Windows necessary), and is free. Just be sure that if the bid will be an Office document which you'll send to someone else, that you save the document in an MS Office-compatible format so they can open and read it.

  • Not sure which Mac to get for FCP/Avid... Input much appreciated

    Hello,
    My question is...
I work in television production and I am making the move to get into editing and I plan on purchasing a Mac in the next few weeks, and I am looking for a bit of advice.
Basically I would like to run FCP on the Mac, and if possible I would like to be able to run a version of Avid Express. The projects that I will work on at home will probably be run through FCP, but if possible I would like to be able to install some version of Avid on the same machine to help me learn.
My main question is... I actually have a television that I purchased about 2 1/2 years ago that has an easy option to use it as a computer monitor, and first off I would like to see if you can tell if this will work for a Mac Pro... Secondly, would it make more sense to shell out $2500 for the Mac Pro and use my existing monitor, or should I go with an Imac and not use my monitor. Basically I would like to know if there is a major difference between a low level Mac Pro and a higher end Imac. I am just a bit uncertain what would be the best way to go. My limit would be $2500 but I would really like to keep it around $1700.
I am not sure if my tv/monitor can handle graphically what would be done so I have included a link for the model that I have.
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Westinghouse LTV-27W2 27" Widescreen Progressive-Scan LCD TV

You might - just - get a Mac Pro for $1700, if you bargain-hunt, but bear in mind that you'll likely need to upgrade the RAM, and certainly get hold of a decent amount of HD space for your media and renders for both programs. Check lowendmac.com regularly - they have a good range of vendors with used and refurb models.
Avid no longer sells Xpress Pro - it's all Media Composer now. Note that Avid does have very specific hardware requirements for supported systems. Not even every Mac Pro is supported (which doesn't necessarily mean it won't run, but you may have problems with it). Pay close attention to which graphics card you're getting, and check that table. Also, Media Composer requires specific versions of OS X and Quicktime, so you'll either have to settle on one system (and avoid Software Updates) or have different systems (eg, two partitions) for the two programs.
Your television has a DVI input, which will work fine with either a Mac Pro or an iMac. Note that Mac Pros still have one DVI port; for an iMac, you'll need the separately-sold Mini DisplayPort to DVI adaptor. Either way, it will be fine for video editing.

  • Need help deciding what computer is best for me?

I am 14 years old and going into high school. I am debating whether to buy the new macbook or take my grandpa's original macbook air. I want to take programing/coding and graphic design classes, so I wanted to know which computer would be best for me?  I like the macbook air for how like and easy it is to carry with me to and from school, but I'm not sure if it would be more beneficial to have the newer technology of the macbook?  Any help or input would be great!  Thanks

Can the money you don't spend now on a new computer be put aside to buy you a new computer at a later date? That is the key question. The trick with the Air is to avoid using up the harddrive, so the less stuff you have to put on it (games, movies), the better. Other than that, it should be able to do all you want it to do...for now. And given how much you poor students have to haul around in your backpacks , I think it's smart to go for Grandpa's Air and save yourself from hauling around nearly three extra pounds.
The Air is there and, I assume, it's going to be given to you at a good price ? Use it and see if it does all you need and want it to do. If you find it's too limiting, the Macbook Pros will still be there for you to get. What's more, if you hold off now, then as you near college--or where ever you're going after high school, you can use the money you didn't spend now for something that might be really excellent for your future in coding and graphics.
If it's feasible, I'd try out the Air for the summer and see if it's for you. The school specials on computers will be going for a while if you find it's not enough and you need more.
