Need help:  deleting duplicate photos & freeig up space

when i first got my macbook pro and transferred all my photos to it from another computer, the iPhoto library was separated into 5 folders (iPhoto Library 1, 2, etc).
For whatever reason, when i opened iPhoto, there were thousands of duplicates and triplicates and even.... quadruplicates (if thats even a word)
Anyway, i had to manually delete each duplicate photo, which took hours.
the problem is, i dont feel like any memory was freed up. Reason being, my pictures folder (where the iPhoto libraries are located) is about 9 GB, while my iPhoto library with 1880 photos is only 2.7 GB.
So i'm wondering if there's a way to create a new iPhoto library using my current library of photos, and deleting all those extra libraries in my Pictures folder, without in the process deleting any more photos (that aren't extras)

Max Good:
I'm guessing you imported each of the other iPhoto libraries into the current one by dragging the entire folder into the open iPhoto window (or selecting the iPhoto Folder to import). That brings in all of the thumbnail files, modified files along with the original files. That's why you have the duplicates.
Duplicate Annihilator will remove duplicate copies of photos as long as they are the same size. So it will remove duplicates of the full sized images and duplicates of the small thumbnails that were imported. It may help.
If you want to restart from scratch first run Duplicate Annihilator on your current library. Then do the following:
1 - copy the Originals folder from it to the desktop.
2 - open the Originals folder and type Command-F. Set the following search criteria in the search window: Kind = Image, Size is less than 100 KB.
3 - in the Search results window will be all thumbnail sized image files. Select all of them and drag to the Trash.
4 - launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and create a new library.
5 - drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window. this will import your originals into the new library with the same rolls as the previous library (the roll dates may be different, however).
If you have keywords on the photos that you need to save you can apply Tutorial #1 after running Duplicate Annihilator and before Step 1.

  • My iPad Mini will not let me delete photos I have synced via iTunes. I need to delete these photos to make space on my iPad. If you know how to delete them please tell me. Much Appreciated x

When ever I go into my Photos on my iPad and select the ones I want to delete there is no Trashcan icon so I am unable to delete the photos. Please contact me if you know how to delete photos synced via iTunes x

If photos were synced from your computer then they can't be deleted directly on the iPad, you will need to remove/de-select them from where you synced it from on your computer and re-sync.

A friend of mine was recently in an accident and we need to delete some photos from her iPhone's "Photo Stream From my Computer" album, but cannot figure out a way to do it (there's no delete button). Help?

Sounds like it was synced from her computer using iTunes.  Connect the phone to her computer, open iTunes, click on the name of her phone in iTunes, go to the Photos tab and see if this folder is checked.  If so, unchecking it and syncing will remove them all, or deleting/moving the photos from the folder on her computer and syncing will remove the deleted/moved photos.

Connect the iPod to your computer. Click on the iPod under Devices and iTunes. How large is the "other" category as shown in the colored bargraph? If larger than about 3/4 GB, restore the iPod. That large of "other" indicates corrupted files.

  • How can I identify and delete duplicate photos

is there a way to identify and delete duplicate photo's in I photo?

No one is suggesting that you download third party "crap". What was suggested is that you download a well established and supported 3rd party application. As to why there isn't a "'delete your stupid duplicate photo' option", you'll need to ask Apple that. Apple aren't here. This forum is for Users to help other Users. As to why you import stupid photos, you'll need to ask yourself.

  • Is there a way to delete duplicate photos in iPhoto? I have approx 10,000 duplicates?

Is there a way to delete duplicate photos in iPhoto without having to delete them individually?

The real question is how this happened - iPhoto is very good about avoiding duplicates and since you have a very large number it must be the result of a user error
Why do you think you have 10,000 duplicates? How many photos total do you have?  Just making a guess I suyspect that sometime you moved to a new system and imported your old library into the new library - Hint - NEVER import an iPhoto library into another Photo library - it does not work and creates a massive mess.  If you  did import an iPhoto library into your current library the best solution (assuming teh old library is still available) is to drag the bad library to the desktop (if you have space to continue it is best to delete it later after everything is done and tested) and Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
Even if you eliminate "duplicates" - in the suggested case they are not duplicates but different versions and at best you lose all edits and non-destructive editig done and are starting with original photos - not really good

  • Is there a way to automatically detect and delete duplicate photos in a library

I just imported a load of photos into my main iPhoto '11 Library from several older MAC's Photo Libraries. Despite repeatedly using the "Don't Import Duplicate Photos" dialogue box, I have many duplicate photos. Is there a way to automatically detect and delete Duplicate Photos?
I also have iPhoto Library Manager installed on my MAC, but cannot seem to locate on it anything that would do this.
I have over 4,000 photos, so would really appreciate some help here! Thanks in advance...

    duplicate annihilator - http://www.brattoo.com/propaganda/
And NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - doing so des not work and creates massive duplication
if you still have all of the original iPhoto libraries I recommend you drag the bad one you created to the desktop (delete it later when everythin has successfully been completed) and start over usin iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to merge the libraries

Always recommended to keep your camera roll empty...import the photos...delete from your camera roll. If you want the photos on your phone, sync them back to your phone. Camera roll is designed for temporary storage only.

  • Organizing and deleting Duplicate Photos in iPhoto library?

Can I easily organize and delete duplicate photos in my iPhoto library?

These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported the library.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • Do you know of a simple way of sorting and deleting duplicate photos on  aperture

Hi , Do you know of a simple way of sorting and then deleting duplicate photos on Apeture.
    Thanks Phil

There is no simple way. The best strategy really is to take care not to import duplicates.
What is your Aperture 3 version?
What kind of duplicates are you asking about?
If you imported exactly the same file multiple times, sorting your images in the Finder by filename or creation date will display them side by side.
If you have diferently sized versions of the same image, edited versions, or versions converted to a different format, then sorting by creation date will not help; you might try to sort by capture date, but that may fail, if there were different imezone settings when you imported the images.
You could also sort be filename, if you did not rename the images on import.
If you renamed your versions, adjusted the date, modified the file properties by writing to the original files, try to sort by other tages - faces, location, keywords.
There are some helper applications to scan your Aperture library and tag duplicates: (I have not really tested any of them)
Duplicate Annihilator (Mac) - Download  good to detect accidentally imported thumbnails
http://photosweeper.en.softonic.com/mac  : This app can actually detect edited duplicates based on statistic measures and histogram similarity.
