Need help extending wireless signal.

Hey all. So here at home we have the BT Home Hub 4 with BT Infinity. Our house is three stories tall, and the router is on the first floor. On the first floor, the connection is fast and reliable. Up here on the third floor (where my bedroom is), the connection to my PC is okay (slower than downstairs but reliable and stays connected), but the connection to any mobile devices is very unreliable and slow (very common disconnects).
I'd like to consider my options about boosting the signal so it's stronger on the third floor. What type of devices can I get to do this? Lets exclude a wired connection for now to save me running cable around the house (I don't know how practical that would be). I saw that BT are selling devices which you plug into the mains and run a cable from that to your device. Out of interest, would that offer any increase in speed if I plugged it in here in my bedroom? Surely because the original signal has the same distance to travel, it wouldn't make a difference? Failing that option, what else is there? I've heard about wireless boosters/repeaters but i'm not sure how well they work and if I need any extra kit to use them.
Also as a side question, does anyone know why my PC can pick up a reliable signal on the third floor, but my phone/games console struggle to do so? My wireless adapter connected to my PC is like 10 years old, so you'd think my newer devices would have better receiving capabilities.
Thanks for any help.

The BT devices you are referring to send the ethernet signal through your mains wiring, so you get a "wired" system without having to install any new wiring.  You can get models that just have an ethernet socket, or ones that have a WiFi hotspot as well.  Be aware that the speed you get through them is very much dependent on the nature of your mains wiring.  The claimed 500Mbps speed is only achievable under laboratory conditions.
If you go for the WiFi ones, you get a second wireless point in your home, and your devices can connect to whichever gives the best signal.  Most gadgets can remember multiple WiFi passwords, so it's easy to hop between your Home Hub and the hotspot.
For your side question, it will depend to a large extent on the size and orientation of the wireless antenna.  As gadgets keep getting smaller, the antennas do as well, which may well wipe out the gains from the more advanced circuitry.

Yes, if you plan to connect the AirPort Extreme back to the Motorola modem/router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Extreme extend the Motorola signal wirelesssly.

  • Need Help With Wireless Bridging

Hello all, I have recently perchased high speed WiFi for my house so I could do some gaming on my Xbox. Problem is my roommate, who is a tech support professional, set the modem up in his bedroom, my Xbox is old and requires a wireless adapter to pick up signals but since the modem is so far away from it it barely recieves the signal. So currently I'm paying for nothing so I confronted him about this issue and he attempted to fix it by wirelessly bridging a router to the modem but after a month he hasn't succeeded and has given up so now it's up to me and I have no clue where to even begin. The modem we have is a Cisco DPC3825 and the router is a NetGear Wireless-N Router WVR2000 V2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Denver: I did not actually understand what kind of bridging you want to do?
The modem already has a wireless transmitter. I think you mean the router is picking up the wireless signal and provide the xbox with connectivity via wired cable. is that right?
If correct, It looks like the issue is with the distance/barriers between your modem and router. You need to try to eliminate some barriers in between to get better signl. Try also to put the devices as close as possible to each other.

  • Extend Wireless Signal -TimeCapsule 500GB + 2 Express 2009 - Not Work !!

    Hi
In my home, I use a Time Capsule first gen 500GB as Router Acess Point. Attached to it, I have 1 PC Desk(Wired), 1 Playstation3/PSP (Wireless), 1 Brigde Wifi used in my SKY Decoder, 2 Iphone (one Classic and one 3GS), 1 IPAD, 2 Macbook White 2008 and 1 AppleTV 2G.
My Home has many rooms and walls are trick, which reduces the signal. To improve the signal, I bought 2 Airport Express, but never worked properly.
When I put The express to Extends the signal, my macbook stops the TimeMachine Backup, my PS3 don´t logs on network and my And my browsing speed drops dramatically, but the sign of the signal is full.
I use the TimeCapsule as MIX WIFI (802.11N-b/g 2.4ghz), because most of the equipment working in G ( Iphones, PS3, Sky, PSP).
    The configs on TC ( Criate a Wireless Network - WIFI b/g/n 2.4Ghz - Allow it to be expanded - channel 2 - WPA/WPA2 Personal - SSD WIFILNK_N)
The confis on Express 1 and 2 ( Extend a Wireles Network - Same SSID on TC - Allow wifi client - WPA/WPA2 Personal with same Key)
I don´t know what I'm doing wrong, because I tried all modes and settings in Express WDS and Deny Wifi Client Connection)and have the same problem.
I don´t try to put all in True WIFI N (2.4 or 5ghz) because the others equipments.
My last attempt is to share this problem here...

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
What some people do wrong with network extension is to put the extending device too far from the main station. Try moving them to a point half way between the main station and the remote client.

That menu bar icon just shows you a rough indication of the signal from the nearest access point but doesn't reflect overall throughput. If you hold down an "option" key when you pull down that menu bar icon, you'll see a value for "RSSI", which is a better indicator of the signal strength.
Use the advice in this thread on the Time Capsule to investigate the signal and noise levels that each AirPort Express sees:

  • Need help extending my current wireless connection

    Hi guys,
I'd like to extend my current connection so that it reaches the two back bedrooms in the house. At the moment, we're lucky if we see one bar there. A friend spent a few hours this week trying to figure this out and finally gave up.
Our internet provider currently has us set up with a:
    Huawei router HG655b
As options, I currently have access to an airport express (802.11n) as well as a Linksys E1000 wireless-N router and wonder if either could be used simply to extend the current wifi signal to reach the back bedrooms(mostly for ipads and ipods) OR completely replace the current Huawei router with either device to increase the current router's poor signal range.
I do most of my work in one of the rooms adjacent to the back two bedrooms and currently have a macbook pro connected by ethernet cable. I'd like to use this room to set up the airport express or linksys router if need be. On another note, the only system we have here with cd access is the macbook pro with Lion OS X. When I tried to install the Linksys router, we got an error message saying it wasn't compatible with Lion yet. Attempts to set it up without the cd have proven futile.
Thanks for any help in advance guys, we're totally clueless at the moment....

    Hi again huluvu,
Changing the security settings on my Huawei didn't seem to make any difference unfortunately. I'm really not sure what the problem could be with my express. I am living in the middle east at the moment but I don't think this should matter as I know lots of others here who are using various airport products.
The good news is that I was able to increase the signal strength by setting up and creating a new network on the Linksys router. We're now able to get two bars(hey, it's better than one) and I'm wondering if I can physically move the router to another room closer or actually in one of the bedrooms. I currently have the Linksys router sitting next to and connected to the Huawei by ethernet cable. I haven't tried it yet as I'm worried about causing problems with the newly created network but I wonder if I could now unplug the ethernet cable on the Linksys and move it and plug it in in one of the back bedrooms(without ethernet cable) or does it need to be connected to the Huawei by ethernet. If so, I guess I could run the ethernet cable into the bedroom as well but would prefer not to unless need be.
Thanks again for the detailed info. I had the iStumbler app before but am now using the KisMAC app which I believe does pretty much the same thing. I'm going to look at the "wifi scanner" app now.
    Cheers!

  • Need help with wireless speeds..

I just got myself a WRT54GS wireless router and i have noticed the speeds being extremely slow. I've gone through all of the threads and didn't get anything that could help.  I have tried what some mention, about changing the beacon interval to 50 and the Frag and RTS to 2304. Also i have changed the wireless channel a couple of times. Still nothing..
Now onto my connection in general, i have cable and the speeds when direct connected are very fast. I typically download at about 300kb+ and i can get mb download speeds as well.  But while hooked up wirelessly it has been going at about 20kbs. When i try and watch streaming videos and all, it will be break up and all of that..due to the slow speed.  BTW i don't believe there is anything interfering at all. The comp is in the same room as the router as well
This is my first time dealing with wireless, so any info and help would be greatly appreciated. What are some good ways to get the speeds up?  The comp i have is new as well lol  I know it limits a lot of the help, but this is a pain in the butt. Thanks

Set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
What encryption are you using?  WEP?  WPA?  WPA2?  Some systems work significantly better with one encryption system vs. another.  So try something different.  WEP is no longer recommended.  You should be using WPA or preferably WPA2.  Password (key) should not have any spaces in it.
Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2 (= PSK2 = WPA with AES ). Go to Microsoft Knowledge base, article ID=893357 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.
    Hope this helps.

  • Need help planning wireless home network and selecting hardware

I run a music teaching business from home and currently I just have an iMac, an HDTV, a printer and an external HD (for Time Machine backups). My computer and peripherals are in a small study and my TV is in the front room where I now teach. I want to set up a wireless network which will let me do the following:
    1) Access either my iMac's HD and/or my external drive's HD to retrieve and display documents and run applications from the front room, where my TV is located.
    2) Use my HDTV as an extension of my iMac so that what happens on my iMac displays on my TV, including accessing the printer and other input devices that may be attached.
What hardware will I need for this besides an Aiport (Extreme?) base station, and how would I hook everything up wirelessly, specifically my TV? If I connect Apple TV to my TV via HDMi will I be able to do what I've stated above, and access my applications as well as music and photos? If not, what's the alternative? A Mac Mini connected via HDMi? Won't that make my iMac's HD redundant to the above scenario?
Hope someone can help me sort this out.

    Hi there,
It sounds like what you want to do is basically use your HDTV as a monitor for your computer. Devices like AppleTV will not run apps nor show the screen of other computers; for that you need some kind of VNC software (either free or something like Back to my Mac) AND a second computer hooked up to the HDTV. So you're looking at a Mac Mini and an Airport network to connect the two, then a wireless mouse and keyboard to control it. And even then, you may want to just open documents on the mini so you'll need to have a system of syncing between the two Macs if you need to access the same docs on the iMac later.
If you don't want a second Mac then you could use a mini display port to HDMi adapter and a really long HDMI run up to your HDTV, and then hope that a Bluetooth keyboard would still be in range to control the iMac (30 ft or less I believe). That's cheaper, but you have the long cable to contend with.

    Hi
First time here, i think i am running myself in circles here reading hundreds od different threads and pdf's.
What i want to do is share my broadband connection with the Imac intel dual core (Wifes), My PC and an XBOX 360. Have the pc and the xbox already connected to the router which is a belkin wirelss pre-n router. the Pc is connected by cable to back of router port 1, the xbox 360 is wireless to the router.
What i want to know is do i need to get anything else for the imac to connect it to the router as it says it has airport extreme wireless networking.
My way of looking at it is that i neeed nothing else and it should just see a wirelless network from the router and connect to that, is that right?
If i am way off do i need something else to plug into the router to make the apple go wireless.
I haven't trierd it yet as we only just got it (the mac) and like to be in charge of all the facts first before setting networks up
MAny thanks for looking and thanks in advance of any help

  • Need help starting wireless system at home

Can I begin by saying I don't have a lot of dosh, so I'm trying to think of a smart way to solve a few hifi problems.
I have two iPhone 4s, one Pad 2, one MacBook pro and a wireless printer
I currently do not have a hifi at home, I would eventually like to have a wireless home cinema system
I would like to purchase apple tv, is it compatible with standard bluetooth wireless speakers or do I have to buy AirPlay speakers?
I would like a home network of speakers so I can play music in different rooms, is apple tv the cheapest way to do that or should I buy airport express or are there other alternatives?

One way or another, you need to create a WiFi (not "hifi") system.  However, the least expensive way of accomplishing that depends on what you currently have.
Think of the box that's provided by your Internet company.  Does it have ONE Ethernet port or multiple Ethernet ports.  If multiple ports, it's a combination modem/router and, in that case, it's highly probable that it has a radio that can be used to create a WiFi system.  All that is necessary is to turn that radio on and to add a password.  Contact your Internet supplier for assistance.
If it has only one Ethernet port, it's only a modem and you need to add a router.  In this case, an Airport is a good choice.  If you need multiple Ethernet ports, get an Airport Extreme.  If you're looking for only WiFi (and perhaps one Ethernet port), get the latest version of the Express.
One way to create a speaker network involves an existing WiFi network (Airport or other) plus an Express for each speaker pair.  Let's wait on that until after you get your WiFi up and running.

  • I need help adding two signal waveforms from a square wave generator using an or gate

Hey Im working on a square wave pulse signal that can be displayed using an FPGA board. I have two different pulses (signal 1 and 2)  generated from square wave generators on LabVIEW each with equal duty ratios but different phase offsets. I need to add the two pulse signals together to get another signal (signal 3) showing two pulses (from signal 1 and 2). I have tried using an Or gate but that wouldnt work as expected. Please I need some guidance on how to implement this boolean logic, P.S. Im open to any other solutions. Thanks.
    For clarity: Imagine signal 1 = 00001000
                                       signal 2 = 00100000
I need signal 3 to be             =  00101000, I hope this emphasizes my point.

The problem is with the third function from the left.  Oops, I forgot, I'm not clairvoyant.  Maybe if you posted your code, we could really tell you if the problem is the third function from the left ...

  • I need help extending the MovieClip class

I want to add a property to the MovieClip class. I just have a bunch of MovieClips that are placed on the stage by reading an XML file and creating lots of clips according to the information in them. Now, I need to know which MovieClips were created below previous clips, and I figure that the easiest way to do so would be by extending the MovieClip class and add an order property.
I have some problems though: I don't know how to set or get this order property within the main clip, I don't know how to place this clip within my movie, and I don't know how to create them dynamically (do I just do something like var myNewObjectOfExtendedClass : myExtendedClassName = new myExtendedClassName?)
This is the code I have on my extended class, called Expando.as:
    class Expando extends MovieClip {
    private var _order:Number;
    public function get order():Number {
    return _order;
    public function set order(nOrder:Number):Void {
    _order = nOrder;

    You mean the Tree component?
My concern with the Tree component (at least the AS2 version) is that I don't see a way to have each node in the Tree have different hit areas with different outcomes.
The tree that I build must have up to 7 levels within each main branch, and not all of them behave the same way. In some branches, clicking the icon next to the label will have a completely different outcome than clicking on the label, which may or may not return a function. Each of those sublevels also need to support different icons, depending on what information is represented by it.
    Sample:
    • Reminders
    My Reminders
    Manual Reminders
    Escalated Reminders
    • Cases
Name Actions < ---- this is where the problem begins. Clicking on the icon where the bullet should be should do something different than clicking on the name, which should do something different than clicking on the word ActionsThis is information about that referral that includes who referred them, the date of the referral, their full address. This information usually takes up 2 lines, sometimes 3
Assignment   <------- you can only open see these leaves if you click on the bullet icon for the previous node; you can't open this by clicking on the text.
    Eligibility
Etc., depending on what information has been appended
    • Suppliers
Anyway, if the Tree Component can indeed support these features, I'd like to know where to find information about it please
In my search for that information, I concluded that I'd probably be better served by building my own MovieClip that can handle these requirements. I did have a working Tree component pretty quickly as I started this project, but then I got more familiar with the app that I'm building the training for and noticed these requirements.
Of course, maybe all these features are supported by the AS3 Tree component. The problem is that I'm a lot worse with AS3 than I am with AS2 heh.

  • Need help connecting wireless router to wired router

Our computers (1 desktop, 1 laptop, and our Xbox) are presently connected to a Dynex DX-E401 4-Port/Cable/DSL Router. We would like to keep this arrangement for the XBox & desktop for gaming purposes (general consensus seems to be a wired connection is faster than wireless). However, I would like to add a Linksys WRT54GL Ver 1.1 wireless router for another laptop to roam around the house. Can I just connect the Linksys wireless router into the Dynex wired router, or does everything now have to go through the wireless router first? To connect the wireless router, do I run the setup CD in the laptop that I want to primarily use the wireless router? I'm not the most savvy when it comes to this stuff, but can follow detailed directions. If there are any links/videos, etc. you can refer to me to that already addresses this issue, that would be great. I greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide.

You don't run the setup disk at all. Actually, you don't want a router you only want a wireless access point.
Wire a computer to the WRT. Open the web interface at http://192.168.1.1/ (default password is "admin").
On the main setup page, change the LAN IP address from 192.168.1.1 to a free IP address in your DSL router LAN. If the DSL router uses 192.168.1.1 as well, you may be able to set it to 192.168.1.2 unless the DHCP server on the DSL router uses 192.168.1.2.
On the same configuration page of the WRT disable the DHCP server.
    Save settings.
    Unplug the computer.
Wire one of the numbered LAN ports of the WRT to your DSL router.
That's it. Now you are able to do any further configuration through the web interface of the WRT at http://192.168.1.2/ (or whatever IP address you have set).
Don't forget to enable wireless security WPA2 Personal with AES and a strong passphrase and change the router password "admin" on the Administration/Management page.

  • Picking up (and extending) wireless signals at limit of range....

    Hello Lists -
I've just had a studio (shed) built in my garden as a home office. I currently have an Airport Extreme Base Station in the house (about 100 feet away). There is a one bar signal that my Powerbook G4 can receive in this new building. If I plug an Airport Express in to a socket in the shed, will it pick up and improve the signal from the house?
Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can offer.
    JON.
    1.25 GHz PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

When acting as a repeater, the repeated signal does not depend on the
strength of the incoming signal. That would be a very
    poor design for a repeater.
I agree, and am excited by the prospect of resolving this simply with an Express.
While I'm aware that Apple couldn't possibly ever produce anything of "poor design", there's plenty of it out there from other manufacturers. Thus my concern. And hopefully my lack of faith will be rewarded with an epiphanic experience where technology reintegrates itself into my life in a wholly satisfying way.
Like I say, I'll post back when I've set everything up next week.
Thanks again. Feeling much more hopeful as a result.

  • Extending wireless range to a different building please help!!!

Warning! This is long but I’m trying to be thorough
Ok guys I have been on a quest to search for a good and somewhat reasonably priced way to extend my home wireless network. I am going to be a detailed as I can so you all can draw the best picture in your head. Also I would like to stress that I have very little knowledge of what the industries acronyms mean, so the more detailed you are the better and it will be greatly appreciated. I know how to set up a basic home network but that’s not saying much when it pretty much does it itself.
Here’s the thing. I have Comcast cable Internet hooked to a Linksys WRTS54GS. It is currently centrally located in the house and works great anywhere in the house (3300sq ft), so moving it to a better location in order to extend the signal shouldn’t be an issue. Approx. 160 feet away is a large shop my dad and I just completed and want wireless Internet.  At 160 feet from the house, you are at the very front of the shop and then it goes back another 60 feet you will be entering the office where the computer is. The office is another 15 to 20 feet long giving a total length of 80 feet. So currently we are at 240 ish feet total. As stated above, I can move the home modem to a place that will be sitting on a window ledge facing the shop. 160 feet away is another window in the shop that I can put whatever device you guys recommend. The hopes are for that the recommended device can incorporate the entire shop of about 2600 sq feet so we can have laptops anywhere we want but mostly in the office
Now I heard of many different options repeaters, bigger antenna, second modem (which might be the repeater thing.) I just don’t know what exactly to do.  I currently use a Macbook (mac haters please no comments J ) and I can get a very faint signal from the home network as well as accessing the Internet but if I move a little or a slight breeze develops, then it goes away.
    Cliff notes
I need to extend my signal with my Linksys WRTS54GS a total of 240 feet but I can place something in between that distance at the 160 foot marker, shorter than that it will be sitting in the driveway. Clear line of site and only have to go through two windows if that even matters.
    Thanks so much
    Jacob

If the signal is as faint as you describe it, then you'll need to find a way to get an ethernet connection in or very near the office so that you can add a secondary router to broadcast the wired signal as a wireless signal using option #1 in this guide.
I have no experience with external antennas designed to increase wireless signals so I can't tell you how much of a difference that would make and I would also advice against buying a repeater since all it would be repeating is the low signal and everything attributed to  it (low speed, high pings, etc.)
Maybe other forum members will be able to provide you with better suggestions.
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.
