Need help fom my imac, monitor impression?

it is almost running out my imac apple care, and in some light condition it seems to me to se the dock on boot screen... but if i use a white background and maximum brightness i can't always see it
i can't really tell what can be, but my options are...
i see it only after my mac get stuck and i have to reboot, usually happen with the screen turning light gray, as at boot and i have to keep the power button down to shut and the reboot
the second option could be ambient light, at night you can not see it, but you can see more with bright day and no direct light... some times not that much

If your Apple Care is still running, contact Apple Care as soon as possible.
My LCD recently had a problem and the LCD screen was replaced. Your problem sounds different but it's worth phoning Apple Care and sorting it out.

  • Need help with my iMac ... it keeps freezing up on me no matter what I do.

    Hello all,
I need help to figure out why my iMac keeps on freezing up on me. I used to have Norton SystemWorks installed but I recently uninstalled it because I found out it was poison to Mac OS X. I've used Memtest to check the memory in my iMac. The result of the test came up fine.
You can go to 'Cooling fans for iMac?' (one of my post) to read all of the solutions I have tries out. This post is the original post to try to fix the problem but it FAILED.
In the last week, I've backed up all of my data to my external hard drive. Then I totally erase my internal hard drive and made sure to zero out the drive. After, I proceeded to install Mac OS 9. I had some problems installing the system at first. I finally installed Mac OS 9 and upgraded it to the latest version of 9. Next, I tried to install Mac OS X 10.3 with difficulty. I then finally installed it. I notice during and after installing the both OSs, my iMac keep on freezing. After I installed Mac OS X 10.3, I updated the OS. And yes, while updating the OS, I've experience the same problem as before. I now have my system back to where it was before I did a fresh install of both Mac OS 9 and X.
You guest it, my iMac is still freezing up on me no matter what I do. Can someone please help me with this problem? Can he/she tell me what is going on with my iMac and how to fix it? All the help I can get would be appreciated. Thanks for you time and effort.
P.S. After trying all of the previous suggestions from other users, I came to an conclusion that one of the hardware in my iMac my be failing. I know for curtain it is NOT my memory. It my be something else inside my iMac.

I've read the thread you linked to above and the only thing I find missing in the saga is any mention of the PRAM battery. If it is depleted (and it would be getting close to depletion if it has never been replaced) it could be causing your problem.
Do you see any strangeness in the time or date displays? That would be a sure sign that the battery is dying. I haven't run into the problem of a bad battery causing constant freezing but it wouldn't hurt to check it out.
As far as temperature effects, the usual pattern of overheating would be a shutdown of the whole computer, a designed-in precaution.
Forgive the battery tutorial if you've already dealt with that possibility.

  • Need help with new iMac

I got this new 21.5 imac mid 2011 with lion but my concern is sometimes I need to press the power button twice for the imac to power on. Once I had it on and shut it down it won't repeat the problem until I don't use it for a certain period of time. Can some help me with this?

  • I need help with a iMac problem my brother has!

Hello! So my brothers old iMac (around 2-3 years old) would just not start. When i pressed the start button on the back of the computer the screen just turned white with a apple logo in the middle and the typical wheel spinning. We waited for about 30 minutes but still nothing. My friend told me to hold shift+command+r+p and that brings up a menu after a while if i want to restore from time machine, reinstall max os x, get help on the internet or so some stuff with the discs. The last 2 things are not important tho. When i then press "restore from timemachine" or something it starts to search for a backup. After 10 minutes it still hasnt found one. So i went back and clicked "reinstall mac os x" and it showed the disks i was going to install the new mac os x software on.
There was one called "Macintosh HD" and one called "Recovery HD". But they both were locked and i could not install mac os x beacause they were the only 2 disks there. Macintosh HD was about 600GB memory and 150GB free and the other one was only about 600MB. How can i fix this? It would be nice if we could restore the computer back to before because he had some things from school but if it dosnt work we can do a full new mac os x so it is all new and no programs/users on it. I hope you understood what i said because my english is not that good
Its OS x 10.8.4 i think, might be 10.8.2/3 or something xD

I suggest verifying that your hard drive is OK. First power off the system, then hold down the Command and R keys to get into the Mac OS X recovery mode. Once you select your language you can run Disk Utility to determine whether your hard drive is functioning correctly. I suggest using the 'Repair Disk' and Repair Disk Permissions' options. If Disk Utility finds problems (SMART errors) then you will need to get them resolved before proceeding. I believe too many SMART errors can lock your drive.
I also suggest reviewing the following Apple website describing the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program to see if your system is affected. The program has been around for quite awhile. According to the document, eligibility may have ended April 12th depending on when you purchased the system, but it's worth checking.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Need help deciding between iMac or Display

I'm hoping some of you mac pros can help me with some advice. A few months ago I made the switch and bought a macbook and realised how great it was for photography, but am now wishing I had a larger screen. I can't decide if I should keep the macbook and get a display to hook it up to, or sell the macbook and buy a new imac. If anyone with either of these could help me out with some pros and cons I would be most grateful !!!

    Hi LilacRose
If you bought the Macbook for portability then buy a screen, if possible go to a dealer and take you Macbook to try some out.
You probably will need at least a 20" so consider if you have permanent space for presumably an iMac (the keyboard will store under the screen on the stand) or the screen.
It comes down to what other things you want to do with the machine, for instance if you want take it to show friends or family photos you have, then maybe keep the Macbook and have the benefit of the big screen for editing etc.
Remember that although Macs hold their value you will still lose some money possibly.

  • Need help/advice for XB270HU monitor. G-SYNC does not work. Monitor Flickers. No signal.

I recently bought this Monitor and have been having constant issues with it. Before I start, here are my specs.
    GPU:GTX Asus Strix 970
    CPU:i5 4690k @3.5GHz
    RAM:16gb
    OS:Windows 7
All my drivers are up to date, and in the NVidia control panel G-Sync is turned on. However while gaming I still get horrible stutters everytime the FPS fluctuates even a tiny bit even going from 140FPS down to 90 FPS. I was under the impression that changes to FPS it would remain smooth down to 30/40 FPS? Not so at all. There is no difference between this and my old monitor besides the fact that it can go up to 144hz.
Secondly everytime I turn on the monitor, it goes black and says no signal and then proceeds to launch at 800:600 resolution, flicker black, 1920:1080, flicker again and arrive at 2560:1440. Sometimes it wont ever receive a signal and my second monitor will turn on instead and take place as primary monitor.
It is plugged into the Display port and is secure, as far as I can tell the chord is in good condition.
And finally sometimes during gameplay, ableit rarely, I get random flickers of black screen for half a second here and there. When this occurs it happens about 3-4 times and then stops. Worrisome!
Part of me hopes that I have a terrible, broken and faulty monitor and could get a replacement. Because then I wouldnt try to justify why I spent nearly $1,000 dollars before tax for this thing. But then the other half of me would not even want to get a replacement because of how big of a let down this one has been. I'd rather just never have bought this one at all and have my money back.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated. If anybody has had similar problems please speak up!!

    Booserbob,
If you are willing, I would like to see about having a new Display Port cable sent out to see if that resolves it. If it does, I would be interested in obtaining the cable you received with the monitor, I have been trying to get one from a customer having this issue with no success as of yet. If you are interested, send me a PM (private message) with the following information and I will get to work on it:

I have built a computer from scratch and the computer restart itself once awhile. I tried to update all the drivers by running a live update from MSI. All the drivers were updated, except the BIOS. I also updated the newest AGP Video driver. When I restarted the computer, the monitor went blank. It says no sync. I tried with different monitor, same thing happened. Everything is running in the system, lights all are on. I thought it might be the video graphic, so i put on an other video card to test it, same thing, no screen. I don't know what to do now. Please HELP?

  • Need help finding a good monitor for a Power Macintosh G5 Dual Core (2.0)

    Hi
I've owned Macs since the 90's - the past 7 years have been using Imacs...  I'm going to purchase a Power Macintosh G5 Dual Core (2.0) with the Nvidia 6600LE card.  Whats a decent monitor for it?  It's DVI output only as far as I can tell - I want at least a 22 or 24 inch monitor and want a fairly inexpensive one as I'm a poor man (Social Security disability).  Can anyone suggest one - I can't tell what screen resolutions are optimal for the card (googled till my eyes hurt) if I knew that I could start hunting CompUSA, Sams Club, etc.

Check out newegg.com. I just got the same G5 you have this past summer and a couple months ago finally decided it was time to ditch the old 21" CRT Viewsonic Ive been using for years.
I picked up a 21" Acer widescreen HD LCD on sale for $119.00 from newegg and could not have been happier..
Ive never bought anything from Acer before but its so far got no complaints from me other then, the DVI cable they give you is the wrong type to use with your G5's video card. Lucky for me it had a DVI-VGA adapter so I could get running. Its running just fine at 1900x1200 without any dual link DVI connecter.
One thing I like about newegg is you get to read user reviews and they are not afraid to tell you if something is bad. Theyve always got different models and brands rotating on and off sale so check em out and make sure you check the reviews and you can find a killer deal.
I think the Viewsonics I looked at in the same size were around $199 or so.. I wouldve got one but Im a broke and jobless kinda guy nowadays so had to get one as cheap as I could..

  • Need help connecting my iMac to my receiver

I recently bought this product http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/RCA-mini-spdif.html
the 3.5mm mini to digital coax. I bought it so I could hook up my iMac (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86810) to my receiver. However, I connected it, and no sound came out. On my receiver I kept switching the signal from analog to digital, to see if that would do the trick, but no luck. So then I tried connecting the 3.5mm to my iPod to see if it was just my computer that wasn't compatible, but that didn't work either. Did I pick the wrong cable? Or could it be defective? My coaxial cable for my DVD player works fine by the way

Which iMac do you have? I have the iShight iMac whaich does have a digital out in the form of a mini optical out (through the output jack), you need to get an optical cable with a mini adaper at one end and make sure you select optical rather than coaxical on your reciver if you can...
    http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/6064041/wo/ER1qnhGv8blL2pY4F IK1iFRH2Zb/3.PSLID?mco=CC849D81&nplm=TF331
Apple has a good cable in the store, its the one I use. If its surround sound you will need to changed a pref in DVD player to let the sound pass through to the reciver to be decoded in DTS or Dolby Digital
All that is assuming you want a digital connection and have an optical in on your amp, otherwise I look silly but you did say you bought a digital cable.

  • Xorg need help - I fried my monitor

:(:( I just fried my 3 year-old babe s monitor, might have been because of the &^%#@*#$ xorg.conf
with auto generated xorg.conf by hwd -xa, i managed to have dwm for a while, and there came D-Day, i left the laptop on for a 3 hours working on other stuff, when i came back, i was welcome with a ominous black screen omg. Since then, i havent had any success revive the monitor again, HDD, VGA onboard chip .... everything is working just fine, but the monitor...
so i plugged in an extra LCD and temporary used it
I think because i ignored the warning: "This will fry old monitor" and i thought my laptop isnt that old :/
Now i just got a new Dell Inspiron 1545 which has df resolution 1376x768
so i have a couple questions, please help me so that i wont destroy the new one :P
1+ are the Horizontal sync and Vertical Refresh rate very important? and if yes, which range should i use to be considered "safe choice"?
I m currently using default HorizSync 28.00 - 78.00 and VertRefresh 50.00 -75.00 (default by hwd -xa) on Intel X4500HD using xf86-video-intel driver in extra repo. I couldnt find these information in the manual :|
2+ any idea how i destroyed the old monitor ?
3+ anybody used Dell Inpsiron 1545, can i see your xorg.conf ? thanks
    thanks a lot

No, It's not your faulth. By "Old" monitor it means old crt. Probably it was about time to change the laptop (or low quiality lcd was installed) ;p
Also you should be able to run without xorg.conf - just install driver for your video card.
    EDIT:
Also when an LCD monitor can't display certain mode it gives "Out of range" error, it doesn't try anyway.

  • Need help getting my iMac to boot to main screen

Last night while I was using my iMac, we had some serious rain and all of a sudden the power went out. Then it went back on, and then off again. The mac was off and I figured give it a rest?
Went back to restart today and I can't get past the apple logo with the spinning gadget under it. I tried loading the OSX CD and holding down the "C" key to run from the OS but its still the same.
Anyone have any ideas on how I can jump-start her, or do you think something is fried? I don't know what could be because the display lights up, the "tada" plays, the apple graphic comes up... but then its sort of just sitting there.
Any/all ideas are appreciated. At this point when I boot the machine with the OS X CD in,it goes like this:
    1. Tada sound
    2. Screen lights up
    3. Apple logo appears
    4. Segmented spinner starts going under the Apple logo
If the OSX disk is in the drive, and I hold down the C key...
    5. The screen turns blue
    6. Then the starfield appears
    7. The OSX menu appears in the middle with the choice of language
    8. I select continue and the menu bar appears across the top of the screen
    9. In the center of the screen there is a box with icons and a continue button
    10. I select continue and the menu switches to a screen asking me if I want to install the disc's OSX version
Note that I have tried to boot by selecting the "Startup Disk" from the top bar menu and that only seems to send me back to #7. Clicking continue brings up a new window where I have three "choices" the first (Install OSX on existing HDD) of which is greyed out and can't be clicked because the version on the HDD is newer than the CD version. Next it seems that I'm being prompted to take the second option; that is to Archive and install OSX while preserving users and network settings. The third option is one I'd like to avoid; that's where you erase and install... completely erases destination volumne and installs a new copy of OSX. At the bottom of these three selections is an "OK" button.
So I'm now wondering what the 2nd option really does. Will it simply replace the OS X with the CD version and leave all my apps and data alone?
BTW, I have done the PRAM reset deal but that didn't seem to do anything.
Thanks again for the help folks. I do appreciate it.
    Mike

So even though I can get the starfield screen, a menu bar, and the window to install the operating system... the motherboard could be fried? That would stink, and I'm still wondering how, if something on the motherboard is cooked, its prompting me to reinstall the OS?
I'll try the shift key and see if that helps. Another person has suggested I take it to an Apple store and have them install the OS as they could do all the updates in minutes while it'll take me a few hours starting from scratch.

  • I need help with my iMac g5!

    Hello everyone,
This is my first time with a Mac so i don't know much about them yet. I just bought a used imac g5 running Mac OS X 10.3.5. The previous owner had a password but turned it off and somehow i turned it back on some i'm locked out. So i found online how you can reset your password without any discs and i found a way to elegidley "trick" your mac to think it was new so i tried it and royally screwed up my mac. First i tried "launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist" and it did nothing. Heres what i did that screwed it up: At startup  i pressed Command+S to open the command prompt. I typed "mount -uw /" then i typed "rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone" then "Shutdown -h now". The first time it did nothing the second time it screws up my mac royally. Now when i turn on the PC it chimes, loads Mac and then takes me to a blue screen with an blank dialog box. My ouse pointer show up and i can move the diolog box but thats it i can't shut it down or anyhing! and i the only way to shut it down is the power button which is bad. What the heck did i do???? Did i destroy it? can it be fixed? and how much will it cost? What's going on? and why am i getting a blue screen with a blank box?? I have no apple discs but i read on a Apple Community form that Apple can send you one for free is that true?
    Help me!!!!!!!!

    Welcome!
I have no apple discs but i read on a Apple Community form that Apple can send you one for free is that true?
Not entirely true. If you are in the US, phone the Apple Store at 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for an operating system specialist. Give them the serial number of your computer and they will use that to see if they still have system software disks for that exact model.
If they do, there is a nominal charge of about US$16 for creating and shipping the replacement disks. However, the older the computer, the less likely that they will have something.
