Need help getting rid of Safari popups on Macbook air.

Yesterday I chose to download some kind of program that was supposed to let me download content on a certain website - when I was getting ready to install the program there was a selection bubble I didn't see until the last second that said i would allow mackeeper to install on my computer. After seeing that i realised that the program was obviously no good and stopped the download as soon as possible but i fear it was too late.
The first issue that I noticed was that Safari preferences won't let me open new tabs with my top sites anymore. I can select the option but as soon as I click out of preferences it seems to reset or something and just goes back to opening new tabs and windows with my homepage which is the apple website.
I didn't notice any other issues after that that I can remember but last night I upgraded my system to the Yosemite software and as soon as it completed I noticed a HUGE increase in the amount of safari popups I get - like everytime I click on a link I get a new tab opening with ads from mackeeper2 or adcash or something like that and I'm also getting little popups that open on the webpage Im on. I tried downloading the adblock and javascript blocker extensions and Im getting the little notifications saying that its blocking about 5 popups per page i visit but its still doesn't stop the new tabs opening everytime I f***ing click on anything.
Also I don't know if this is related but I haven't been able to log into my yahoo account either - i put in my password and it seems to let me in but then when i try to ask a question on yahoo answers it keeps asking me to log in again.

Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

  • Need help getting rid of Trovi virus on Safari and Chrome. Cannot use the instructions Apple sent because the copy command under the edit tab does not work.

    I use OS X 10.9.5. I have a trovi virus on Safari and Chrome. Yesterday I thought I had gotten rid of Trovi, but it's back on both my search engines. The directions Apple sent yesterday do not work; the copy function under the edit tab is grayed out and non-responsive. Can anyone help me to get rid of this virus? Thanks.

    Are you referring to these instructions?
    Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support
    If so, be sure to read the instructions carefully, and note that you will need to repeat the numbered steps in the Conduit/Trovi/SearchProtect removal instructions for each line shown, not all together.
    If those instructions aren't working for you, for whatever reason, try my Adware Removal Guide. It provides similar instructions, worded differently, as well as an app (AdwareMedic) that can help you do the removal automatically.

  • Some songs on my iPod have "duplicates" that I want to get rid of. I need help getting rid of them.

    So I just got my iPod touch 5th gen yesterday and with the new iTunes and ios, it's all really stupid and confusing. Just as I thought I was satisfied with the music on my iPod, I find out that some songs have two versions.
    I downloadable songs from both my account and my brother's account. I read the message that I can't do the whole download of past purchases for 90 days and went on since it didn't really seem to effect anything on my 4th gen. Now I have 800+ songs on my iPod and I guess Apple decided to get rid of being able to delete songs right from the device. So I delete all the songs from my iPod, go into iTunes on my computer, sign into my brother's account, and download the songs from there that I wanted. Now I have about 300-400 songs downloaded on my computer in iTunes. I sync all the music to my iPod and now I think I'm satisfied. But when I go to some of the artists, it has one song that's ok to play and then it has the same song that can't be played with the cloud button next to how long the song is.
    It's not a big deal, but it really bothers me. How can I get rid of the one that has the cloud next to it. Thanks for the help!

    The Cloud by the song indicates that is is an iTunes purchase but it is not downloaded on the iPod. If you only want download iTunes purchases to show in the Music app go to Settings>itunes and pp Store and turn off Show aLL.

  • How do I get rid of Genieo on my Macbook air

    I have been trying to rid my Macbook air of Genieo.  Can anyone help please.

    You installed the "Genieo/InstallMac" rootkit. The product is a fraud, and the developer knowingly distributes an uninstaller that doesn't work. I suggest the tedious procedure below to disable Genieo. This procedure may leave a few small files behind, but it will permanently deactivate the rootkit (as long as you never reinstall it.)
    Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
    Back up all data. You must know how to restore from a backup even if the system becomes unbootable. If you don't know how to do that, or if you don't have any backups, stop here and ask for guidance.
    Step 1
    In the Applications folder, there should be an item named "Genieo". Select it and open the Finder Info window. If it shows that the Version is less than 2.0, download and install the current version from the genieo.com website. This may seem paradoxical, since the goal is to remove it, but you'll be saving yourself some trouble as well as the risk of putting the system in an unusable state.
    There should be another application in the same folder named "Uninstall Genieo". After updating Genieo, if necessary, launch "Uninstall Genieo" and follow the prompts to remove the "newspaper-style home page." Restart the computer.
    This step does not completely inactivate Genieo.
    Step 2
    Don't take this step unless you completed Step 1, including the restart, without any error messages. If you couldn't complete Step 1, stop here and ask for instructions.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework
    Right-click or control-click the line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.
    If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    A folder should open with an item named "GenieoExtra.framework" selected. Move that item to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password.
    Move each of these items to the Trash in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client
    /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib/usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib~/Library/Application Support/com.genieoinnovation.Installer~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.download.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
    If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those listed above, move them as well. There's no need to restart after each one. Some of these items will be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
    Restart and empty the Trash. Don't try to empty the Trash until you have restarted.
    Step 3
    From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
    Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including ones called "Genieo" or "Omnibar," and any that have the word "Spigot" or "InstallMac" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
    Your web browser(s) should now be working, and you should be able to reset the home page and search engine. If not, stop here and post your results.
    Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install this software. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad has a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If youever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
    You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Genieo developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. It must be said that this failure of oversight is inexcusable and has seriously compromised the value of Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You cannot rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
    Finally, be forewarned that when Genieo is mentioned on this site, the developer sometimes shows up under the name "Genieo support." If that happens, don't believe anything he says, but feel free to tell him what you think of his scam.

  • How do I get rid of malware on my Macbook Air w OS X Yosemite?

    My Macbook Air is infected with malware and I'm getting popup ads all the time. Is there any way to get rid of this problem?

    You may have installed one of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
    Back up all data before making any changes.
    One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
    If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
    Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
    Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
    In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
    Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
              Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.

  • Need help exporting from lightroom 4 on my Macbook Air with an external hard drive.

    After importing photos to my new Macbook Air (2014) from external drive, it made me reformat my external drive.  After reformatting, I tried to export edited images back to my external drive and it says "photos missing or offline", even when external drive is connected.  How do I get my edited images back onto my reformatted external drive?

    Ok, so at least you haven't lost the images.
    The catalog knows "about" the images but not where they currently are. You cannot import them again because they have already been cataloged.
    If the images are on the external drive in the location you want, the the procedure to re-connect is as follows.
    Select one of the thumbnails. It should have an "!" or "?" on it (upper right). Click whichever it is and you will be asked to Locate the file. Navigate to the file to re locate it and make sure the check box "Find nearby images" is checked.
    Lightroom will now relink all the images.
    Note:
    I usually just import from my external hard drive and then export them back to the external hard drive when I finish editing them.
    this is not a "correct" workflow when working with catalogs. The files remain on the external drive. The act of importing is only necessary once to catalog where the files are and to allow quick access to them via the Library. Editing them either in or outside of Lightroom via Photoshop does not require you to move the file.

  • I'm currently using Safari on my Mac OS 10.7.2 with no problems. Do i need to get rid of Safari to use Firefox? Can i install both and use either?

    I went to Vistaprint to build a free web page. Info on "how to" says I need Firefox to make edits. I think basic information questions like this should be addressed for us computer novices before I press the download button. What do I get with Firefox thats better than Safari? Will it work with Mac OS 10.7? What are the basic features & benefits? All the reviews I've read only address problems. Is this program any good at all?

    You can use both.:)

  • I need help getting rid of Adobe Flash Player

    First - cor-el, thanks for your suggestion (reply form won't let me enter a reply).
    Now, my problem: I use very slow dial-up. I cannot have a Flash Player on my computer or nothing else opens. When I downloaded Adobe Reader 8, somehow Adobe Flash Player 10 downloaded with it. It is messing up my Internet use. When I tried to remove it in Add or Remove Programs, and with Adobe's downloadable remover, a notice opens saying it will remove the Flash Player when Windows Messenger is closed. But Windows Messenger isn't open. I never use it. Adobe states “Due to recent enhancements to the Adobe Flash Player installers, you can now remove the player only by using the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller.” Surely there must be a way to find the components and delete each one. Can anyone tell me how to do that? Or maybe suggest something else besides reinstalling the operating system again (I did it two weeks ago -- took all day with help from Dell techs on the phone) and living without Adobe Reader?
    == Operating system ==
    WinXP

    First, a quick workaround.
    In Firefox,
    Tools> Addons
    Plugin Tab
    Locate Flash Player on the list and press disable.
    Restart Firefox.
    That should at least prevent it from running in Firefox and slowing down browsing. I think.

  • Need help getting rid of those ASX:ABAP tags from the generated XML file!

    I was able to transfer xml data from abap internal tables to a string.
    Here is the content of the string:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
    <asx:abap version="1.0" xmlns:asx="http://www.sap.com/abapxml">
    <asx:values>
    <DATA>
    <item>
    <UOM1 />
    <UOM2>L</UOM2>
    <GL_PR_SEG />
    <RECORDMODE>A</RECORDMODE>
    </item>
    </DATA>
    </asx:values>
    </asx:abap>
    Now my goal is to strip out a couple of tags out of that string directly using xslt.
    Do you know of any way i could take out the <asx:abap> and <asx:values> tags using an xslt program. I'd like to be able to strip them out directly from the string itself.

    its not function. its within abap.
    within your abap program, the xml code is in a string for example xml_string .
    use
    replace all occurrences of '<ASX:ABAP>' in xml_string with '' .
    replace all occurrences of '</ASX:ABAP>' in xml_string with '' .
    replace all occurrences of '<ASX:VALUES>' in xml_string with '' .
    replace all occurrences of '</ASX:VALUES>' in xml_string with '' .
    Hope this solves your issue.
    If your question is answered, reward the helpful answers with points and close the thread.

  • How can I get rid of  'Vidx'  adverts on MacBook Air?

    Vidx has been everywhere in literally any page whenever I use safari. They popped out annoying ads and direct me to their own webpage when I clicked some other safe links. My internet has been slowed down because of Vidx. I couldn't find any solutions. Does anyone have the same problem? Does anyone have any solutions that helps? Many thanks! 

    You installed the "VidX" trojan, perhaps under a different name. To remove it, first open the Applications folder by selecting
              Go ▹ Applications
    from the Finder menu bar, or by pressing the key combination shift-command-A. Look for an item named "VidX," "MacVx," or similar. If present, drag it to the Trash and empty.
    From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
    Uninstall any extension you don't know you need. If in doubt, remove all of them. You may well have more than one that's adware or spyware.

  • How to get rid of imessage on a Macbook air

    People who have access to my itunes username and password can use my phone number for imessage on their computers. How do I prevent this besides changing my itunes password? I do not want this to happen again.

    The only real solution is to change your password and keep it safe. Whenever someone uses imessage on your account you should get an email from apple so you will know. Don't give out passwords if you don't want people to take advantage of it.

  • Help! Need to get rid of MacKeeper and Spinning Wheel!

    Hello Apple Community,
    I have a problem that has been solved by one member of the community, however, I am still having the same problem.  I thought I knew my mac pretty well however, I was one of those stupid people who installed MacKeeper in hopes of cleaning up my macbook pro and get the spinning "wheel of death" to STOP!
    I have read the posts and the comments from previous threads.  One in particular was posted by "uvistr" requesting help with the same problem I am having.  The community member, "etresoft", provided a great solution.  However, I tried to follow the directions to re-install mackeeper and then un-install, but I could not find any information in my logs with anything related to mackeeper. When I went to the mackeeper site, the only way I could re-load it was to buy it again!  I feel like I am going in circles!
    I thought I had deleted, dumped, trashed MacKeeper, but I still have the white screen on my desktop that says "unistall mackeeper". Only the GREEN light is available to use and of course I only just get a bigger screen!  Nothing is on the screen and there are no options in the finder (that I have found) to delete this white screen.
    I do know that I didn't un-install it correctly based on the information from "etresoft".  I am at the point of getting rid of everything on my macbook and then re-install everything.  I have everything backed up on an external hard drive.
    Once I get MacKeeper off of my machine, will the spinning wheel stop?  OR does anyone think there is another problem that is causing it to constantly spin?  I have checked with Comcast and am running at their top speed.  I have the latest upgrade of OSX Lion and have deleted all pictures and movies from my hard drive.  Any thoughts?
    Thanks for any help that can be provided.....

    No, you do not need MacKeeper.  Removing MacKeeper will help.
