On Linux/Unix Oracle does not start automatically at machine reboot. You have to create an autostart script to do that. See Re: Starting Oracle Databases on Startup of Server

if you follow all 7 steps, you can download a trial via one of the links on this page using a browser that accepts cookies:  http://prodesigntools.com/download-adobe-cs4-and-cs3-free-trials-here.html
and activate with your serial number.
if you have a download problem, you didn't follow all 7 steps.  typically, failure to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 is the problem, but your browser must also allow cookies so that's (a restrictive browser setting) another potential source of problems.

  • Need help restoring original desktop after crash and new install

Question: is there a way to restore my original desktop?
My system starting giving me kernel errors. I was running Member when it crashed. I did a restart and the mouse would no longer work. Tried starting in safe mode. Mouse still refused to work. Removed most of my memory and restarted but mouse still would not work. Finally got the mouse to move in safe mode. Set my system to start from a different hard drive. This time the mouse worked fine. Ran memory check from this secondary driver and ALL memory checked out fine. Restarted computer with the original drive and once again the mouse would not work.
Finally, I re-loaded OS 10.4 plus ran all updates. I first tried to load it keeping all the setting but this made the system lock up and the computer would not restart without the CD. Finally, re-loaded 10.4 and archived original desktop.
Question: is there a way to restore my original desktop?
I found a folder that has the desktop stuff in it but some seems to be missing...
AND I cannot find any of my previous mail that had been saved. I'm sure (I hope) that it is here, but don't know where or how to set it back up.
I still don't know what caused the original problem...

    Hi, Edward.
    1. You wrote: "I first tried to load it keeping all the setting but this made the system lock up and the computer would not restart without the CD. Finally, re-loaded 10.4 and archived original desktop.... I cannot find any of my previous mail that had been saved. "If you performed an Archive & Install of Mac OS X and did not use the "Preserve Users and Network Settings" option, then everything that was in your old user account, including your Mail, is gone. Before performing an Archive and Install without that option, you should have made a complete backup of the affected hard drive using a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution.
While it's unclear what you mean by "archived original desktop." If you mean you used Create Archive to create an Archive (.zip file) of your previous Home > Desktop folder before performing the Archive & Install, then only the files and folders that were saved on the Desktop at that time would be preserved. Mail was saved in your Home > Library > Mail folder, which the Archive & Install replaced if you failed to use the "Preserve Users and Network Settings" option.
If any e-mail files are still on the hard drive in question, then the instructions in my "Data Recovery" FAQ may help you find them, but I suspect they are all gone.
    2. You wrote: "I still don't know what caused the original problem..."Earlier in your post you noted:"My system starting giving me kernel errors."and"Finally got the mouse to move in safe mode."If by "kernel errors" you meant the following message:
    That indicates a kernel panic.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
Since the system appeared to work properly in Safe Mode, this would also imply an errant Startup or Login Item could have been the cause, which is addressed in Step 4 of the "Troubleshooting kernel panics" section of my FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Need help troubleshooting slow startup after installing apps

I'm relatively new to OSX (though not new to computer administration and Unix/Linux) and I need some guidance troubleshooting my slow booting Macbook.
I've got a vanilla Macbook that can installed with 10.5.5 and I've since done the upgrade to 10.5.6. I didn't have any problems until I started installing some heavier apps like the Adobe CS3 suite and MS Office (I know, I should get iLife, but I have an available license of Office.)
Since doing these installs, it has noticeably, but not drastically, slowed the start-up time of my mac. The slow down starts in the blue screen part of startup and is most noticeable as the dock and the menus load.
(I've read about Searchlight indexing, which would make sense since these are both big suites, but it's had several hours of run time to do this and many reboots and it's still a problem.)
I have my suspicions that Adobe is mostly the culprit here, but I'm not sure where to look for start-up logs and configuration info. Are there any apps out there like Start Up Control Panel (www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) for OSX? Are there any places that would be a good place to start looking? I basically want to try to make sure that only the necessary stuff is loading at start-up and and none of that "helper app" crap that was so common in windows environments.

  • NEED HELP.. Think Spyware was installed on my Mac

Ok here is my problem... First off I just moved to Europe and forgot to pack my Startup Disc that came with my Mac.... How can I get a new one???
The reason I think I need a new one right away is that....
Today I got an e-mail for Paypal... it said that I needed to update my info... so I clicked on the link... and went about entering all my new info.... since we just moved to a new apartment and all...
But then I was deleting a bunch of useless e-mail.... and I came upon an e-mail from 3 weeks ago.... It said thank your for updating my information with Paypal.....
I then went back and looked at the e-mail that asked me to update my info... and it did not look quite right.... so I went and logged into Paypal the safe way... and changed my password.... then called my husband who said he should change my password as they might have installed Spyware on my computer when I clicked on the link....
so then I went to Download MacScan... and when trying to install it... it asks me to enter my User Name and Password to Authenticate... However it won't accept my Password and Username it Keeps saying.... "Sorry you have entered and invalid User Name or Password..."
So now I am unable to get MacScan to see if I have any spyware on my Mac... and also I don't have a Startup Disc to change my Password.....
What can I do???? and how can I fix this right away...
Any Help would be sooooo greatly appreciated.....
Thank you for your time on this issue....
    Rhonda.... In Sweden...

There are excellent posts on security at various sites and I'm bad at setting up hyperlinks, but *until you can get a new install disk*:
    1) Disconnect from the internet; it's time to change your login password(s). If you are using an administrative account, think about setting up a user account without administrative privileges. Here are a few recommendations:
    2) When you start up your computer hold down the shift key until you see the login window. You are now in "safe mode". Check and then secure empty the trash. If the spyware uses a preference file it might temporarily be disabled.
    3) What I am writing now may not necessarily rid you of spyware, but it will give you some options until you get a system disk. Go to System Preferences (SP) (the apple icon in the upper left hand side of the computer). Open SP and then go to Accounts and open that. Try to open the lock or if it is unlocked you are in luck. If you can't open it, then you're password may have been changed and the following suggestions can't help much. If you can unlock the lock icon continue.
    4) Click the password tab and change your password(s) if you have more than one account). This will require you to enter your old (and hopefully still working login password). In terms of new passwords, DON"T have any part of it be a word in the dictionary. These are subject to easy "brute-force" programs that can grab your password easily.
Use combinations of numbers, letters, and symbols. You can misspell a word or two. Make up sentences that remind you of your password. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"= LhwiWSctFS. Add numbers and characters, upper and lower case like $ % () 64@?/ etc interspersed. Use at least 9 characters. Look for any unusual item in"login items" and delete if it looks suspicious, using the minus sign. If you have no luck trying to change passwords, then go to the section which assumes you have a new OS X install disk. Your system login/administrative password has been changed.
If you have a friend with mac OS X you could reset your password by hooking up the two computers through the firewire ports and start up in Firewire target mode. (Another Google moment...maybe your new friend has a start up disk?)
    5) Now close the lock and restart your computer. Login with your new password and then do a spotlight check for macscan and delete all macscan files (especially anything that has plist at the end (these are preference files).. Trash and delete what you find. You can also reinstall the software without deleting prior files, but "uninstalling" is the safer way. You could also just try the new password with MacScan to authenticate, but deleting and reinstalling MacScan is a safer bet.
    6) Download/Install MacScan and enter your new administrative password which should enable you to run an authenticated full scan. Click on MacScan Preferences and check both tabs.If you don't have your purchase code, run in demo mode. Run a full scan. If you're lucky and MacScan finds something you know what to do. Be aware, however, that MacScan does not detect many commercial applications that might be considered spyware or malware.
    7) If MacScan doesn't pick up a thing, try downloading, installing and running ClamXAV, as advised. You might also want to consider a program called Little Snitch which monitors outbound connections. You can Google this stuff and read up on it. Little Snitch won't eradicate; it just limits the outbound connections your computer can make.
    8) The prior advice is right on point. Change ALL your passwords on all your accounts, hopefully in secure mode (https). This is only a temporary fix because some spyware may be capable of grabbing all your passwords until it is eradicated (for example, a keystroke logger literally grabs everything you type and can "phone home" that info)
    9) Regardless of whether the above items work, your best bet is to look for an apple store where you are or go online and purchase an OS X TIGER Install DVD or whatever OS system you have been using. Maybe Leopard in the future?
    10) Once you have the new OS DVD (im assuming your drive can at least read a dvd), you have a few choices here:
Insert the new dvd, restart your computer and hold the C key down until you see the logo and the "spinner". You are booting up from the system CD and not your hard drive. Personally, I would trash everything without saving anything from the hard drive. If there are things you really really want to save, photos, data etc, you should first save and burn them to DVD or an external hard drive before booting up with the system disk. Should you reinstall this later on your new system, you run the risk of reinfecting your new system all over again, unless you feel secure that a 3rd party app can scan the disks/drives with success. The risk of a mac virus is almost non existant at this time...the same holds true for trojan horses and most spyware. Phishing is another story.
You could retain the files and data you have by doing an archive and install which creates a NEW System Folder and renames your old system "Old System" but this is not recommended for obvious reasons.
So you have booted up with the system disk. Don't simply install. Just select English as your language and then go to the tab which enables you to open Disk Utility (i think it's called options...it's late, i'm tired and having a senior moment). Its there with other options such as reset password, etc.
While now in booted disk utility, highlight the whole disk (not just your hard drive), go to the erase tab, rename your hard drive if you like and open security options. For your purposes an erase would probably be ok, but the best thing to do is a secure erase. Check the button that says it will do "one pass"and install zeros on the entire drive, not just your hard drive volume. Then click erase. It will ask you to confirm.
Do so, but remember that ALL prior date will be lost for most purposes. It is feasible that Big Brother or others might be able to recover some data, but if you're not doing some identity theft scam, running with Al Qaeda, a big corporation looking to hold onto trade secrets, a bit paranoid or overly security conscious one pass should do. If you're up for it do 7 passes. Hey 35 sounds like even more fun! Think of all those extra zeros. ;>) One pass will take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the size of your hard drive. 35 passes could mean 7 to 24 hours.
Once the security wipe is done, your disk will probably have 3 partitions and a hard drive volume. Close Disk installer and Reinstall your system software. Check out security recommendations at Apple and other sites. For a minimum of time, you can get alot more protection. Consider using Filevault if you aren't already doing so. You are now doing a "clean reinstall".
You can Google login options mac to get a sense of what you feel most comfortable doing in terms of security and how you log in in the future. Don't enable automatic login. This = trouble if someone walks by your mac. They can start it up without knowing your password. Firmware protection is another option.
Now your computer has a better than 99.99999999% chance of being totally clean.
Deal with the harm that may have been done by changing every password on every account AGAIN. NOW. With your new clean computer.(except your new mac passwords). Consider changing your keychain password if you use keychain or boot up again and change your login password so that your NEW login password and keychain password are not the same.
If you have done online banking since the scam, and while at risk, beyond changing the passwords, you may want to contact your bank and change your accounts. All automatic charges/payments can be rolled over for 90 days. After that you need to give notice to payors/payees.
Finally, to limit the possibilty of identity theft, log onto www.annualcreditreport.com. There are 3 major credit bureaus. You have the right to a free check from each of them every year. This means you can stagger your requests to monitor credit activity every 4 months.
This is alot to digest, but I hope it helps. I'm sure you know the obvious = never ever click on a hyperlink from Paypal or anyone you don't know. The same holds true for downloads unless it's a reputable sight. Become aware of the small things you can do with your mac to make it even more secure than it already is.
However, when "I" do send you that email asking you to help, because my spouse/client/brother/father/sister/mother/adopted son/small goat/pig/chicken Nikomi Zimbabwe died with no heirs and I'm in charge of the account in Nigeria or maybe even Swizerland, it's real. It's me, remember?....and I just can't wait to share the millions with you because I read your email address and can tell from that alone that you're a kind compassionate trustworthy Christian/Bhuddist/Muslim/Agnostic/Atheist woman.
I also know because someone you don't know told me about you, or maybe I'm psychic or psychotic; I confuse the two. Just send me a little money to help bribe the court/process the application. Whats a few thousand when millions await you? God will bless you... and your little computer too ~!
So will I when I get your cashier's check ;>).

  • Need help accessing Mail files after Updgrade to OS X 10.5

I recently did an Erase and Install of my new Leopard OS X. Before doing so, I copied my complete mail file from 10.4 to an external HD.
After installing 10.5, I tried to import the old files from the HD and I get a message that says my Mail file is not compatible with this version of OS X. This is a REALLY big problem because I have 8 years worth of contacts stored in those mail files
I don't know what to do. I have since set-up new mail accounts, so I am using my Mail Program without problems. I need to know how to access my old files. I have tried everything I can think of. Any help would be appreciated.

which Mail file do you mean? the Mail application itself? that was the wrong thing to copy. the application itself contains no user data at all. all your mail data was stored inside your home directory in the folder homedirectory/Library/Mail. if you didn't back up that folder, your Mail data is gone. Your ONLY chance (and it's a small chance) of recovering your Mail data now is to use data rfecovery software like [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1] and try to restore that Mail folder. You should do this ASAP to decrease the chance that this data will be overwritten.

  • Need help with a problem after cloning my HD....

I recently cloned my HD to a backup drive. I did an erase and install of Tiger on my original drive. I recently cloned everything back onto my original drive from my backup drive. Now when I go to boot up on my original drive, for the first time ever I must type a Username and Password to log on to the computer. Trouble with this is, I tried my username and password and it would not work. I double, triple, quadruple checked my spelling and tried different combinations just in case i was being stupid, NOPE. It won't let me log on to my main HD. Can anyone help with this?

Let me get this straight. You did
1: Cloned your original boot drive to a external - not a problem
(did you boot from the clone to check it out?, did you use cloning software or???)
2: You erased your original boot drive - ok no problem.
3: You then installed Tiger on your original boot drive - ok no problem there
4: But you cloned from your clone back onto your original, freshly installed Tiger drive?
    Why did you do this?
Cloning copies the whole drive, all the little hidden stuff, copy protection etc.
    That's why it's called a clone.
Did you mean to say you copied certain folders/files from the clone onto the new Tiger install on your original boot drive?
    What folders/files was these?
You need to copy the contents of certain folders inside your User folder, not the folders themselves.
What software did you use to clone with?

  • Help!!! After failed install computer wont start up

After an hour or so of the install on my MacBook Pro 2.33Ghz Intel received the following message:
"Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer. The installer encountered an error that caused installation to fail. Contact software manufacturer for assistance. Click restart and try again."
Computer will not start up now after hitting power button.
    Thanks for any help.

Experiencing the same thing here. I got the same error message so I tried verifying disk, which came back with the error "invalid node structure" & "disk needs to be repaired". So I click repair disk, to which I get "disk utility can't repair this disk".
At this point the hard drive in not mountable (unless I restart with the 10.6 install disk) and when I tried to restore my time machine backup from my portable HD it said there wasn't enough space.
All this after getting disconnected from customer support without a call back and suddenly being after hours.
I am not a happy apple person right now.

  • Help - mail keeps crashing after I installed Mavericks!

I have just installed the new Mavericks operating system and I can no longer open mail.  I am beginning to panic as I have dozens of folders and thousands of important emails saved and need access to them tomorrow.  Please help!

I solved the problem by disabling all Internet Accounts in the System Preference and re-enabling them one by one.  I found that a few settings crashed the Mail app., mainly for those Microsoft Exchange accounts.  I deleted them and set them up again then it works fine now.  No more crash when I open the Mail app.  Hope this procedure helps those with similar problems, too.

  • Need help- have no idea how to install original airport on G3 Powerbook

I just bought an ornignal airport card on ebay. I have no idea how to install it (i think it goes under the keyboard, but specifically where?) also, it didn't come with any software...do I need some kind of driver? I am so confused. All I know is that I spent over $100 for this thing and would love it if I could get it to work. Really want to go wireless...can anyone please help. (already checked all over the support page and called apple and asked them to point me in the right direction, but have gotten no where. thanks in advance.

    Thea,
I get the impression you cannot return the AirPort card...this would be my first choice. Since the card is not recognized, either the card is bad or your powerbook has a hardware issue (doubtful).
Do you have an Apple Store nearby?
You might also contact your local User Group...there should be good help available:
    http://www.apple.com/usergroups/
    Your alternatives are these:
    - find another original AirPort card (limited to the slower 11Mbps speed) to try;
    - remove the internal AirPort card and buy a one of these wireless PC cards that run at the faster 54Mbps speed and are simply inserted in the PCMCIA card slot on the side of the 'book:

    http://www.macsense.com/product/broadband/WPE800.html
    http://www.asante.com/products/productsLvl3/AL5403_XG.asp
    http://www.buffalotech.com/wireless/products/airstation/WLICBG54A.html
The above cards have the Broadcom chipset that Apple's AirPort software supports. If you have already installed AirPort 3.1.1, you are ready to go.

  • Need help with error message after failed iSync: Leopard and Palm OS

I recently upgraded to a new computer which came with Leopard installed. In my old computer, Tiger OS, all was well when syncing to my Palm device.
I tried going from handheld to desktop with slow synch turned on in iSync and now I get this message re: failure--
"iSync Conduit starting 9/6/08 8:21:12 AM
Timeout waiting for Sync Engine, exiting 9/6/08 8:27:31 AM
    iSync Conduit synchronization failed
“iSync Conduit” failed (error = #-2)"
    Any ideas--please help.

    I wish you success.
I have an older Palm, the Zire. Once I got the most recent Palm software and chose, at least for now, to use iSync, I haven't noticed any problems.
Since I haven't used the "T" family of Palms, I can only guess that the process is much the same as with the Zire. You can disable the MAc syncing, move your currently disabled conduits back into Palm syncing, reinstall what Palm lists as your most recent software (and make sure all of your calendar and contacts info is just as you want it), do a sync through the HotSync Manager (ignoring iCal). I'd do a restart just to clear the system. It appears there is a warning note on resetting the iSync history, so you might not want to do that but just manually clean up any inconsistencies in iCal before you try once again.
[I actually wanted to just accept my Palm calendar so trashed my iCal calendar after some questionable syncs, but you can do an export to save the iCal calendar before you wipe it out.]
But my impression is that to get pass the messages you initially wrote up, you'll have to ask the Palm discussions folks for help. They are very helpful.

  • Need Help in Knowing Exactly What is Installed & Upgrading RAM & HD

    Hello-
I am  not very tech savvy, so I am calling for some help here. I might be getting in over my head, but I think with some help here and from Apple articles, I should be able to correctly upgrade to the max RAM and the best quality and largets HD. I have a brand new cMBP. I wanted 16 GB (or need 16 Gb of RAM) but that configuration was not possible. I understand one needs to install RAM that is compatible with the existing RAM, which I do not know how to figue that out too.  I need to figure out how much RAM is currently installed, and either take the existing RAM out and install sticks of the best RAM I can get for this cMBP that equals 16 GB of RAM. I would like some recommendations on where to go to get the RAM, how to know what type I need (I know there are several numbers/letters that identify the RAM), and I think I found the link that shows me how to change the RAM. I do not have the proper screwdrivers so I will need to get those, but my main concern is to know what to do with the existing RAM. I know that I did order the least amount of RAM I could get since I knew I needed 16 GB so I was gong to upgrade. I did read the RAM has to be evenly divided but I am not sure exactly what that means since I do not know how many slots it has.  I stayed with the least expensive HD because I knew I was going to try and upgrade to the largest SSD (or Flash Drive-not sure of the difference). If it is difficult to swap out the existing HD 5200rpm for the best SSD, I have not been able to find that Apple article, but recommendations on a website to get these drives for the MBP I just received would be really helpful.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.  Remember I am not savvy in this type of stuff so I need as much detail explanation as one can give me.

As for the 'old' RAM - I have a drawer full of old sticks, carefully labeled. Because RAM is so cheap just now, you're not able to get much for it: maybe hand it down to a friend in need?
Yes, the 512GB is one of the largest consumer SSDs made. OWC has a 980GB, but it's only for 3Gbps speeds and we have 6Gbps speeds on our MacBook Pros. For some good information and a 'buyer's guide' to SSDs, see Sean's SSD Buyers Guide & Information Thread. One of the drives that he recommends is the Crucial m4 series.
I do use my Thunderbolt port - I've an Apple Thunderbolt Display and just recently (this month) added a LaCie 2Big Thunderbolt 4TB disk (it's actually 2 disks - it comes formatted as RAID 0 but I 'unraided' it and now have two 2TB disks). Lightening fast - I use one drive as a Time Machine backup and the other as my 'working' drive for any and all projects that I'm currently working on.
Because my Denon reciever has AirPlay, I don't have external speakers for my computer any longer. My first pair were some Harman Kardon Soundsticks and they were good, but I bought the Bose Companion (it was at III then - I believe that they're at 5 now) speakers in 2006 and found them to be unsurpassed. They work great with Apple products. The Bose are expensive, but worth it.
Try Amazon for both the Crucial RAM and SSD - they have a slight discount, anyway, from what you'd pay ordering directly from Crucial.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
