Here's what finally worked for me:
Try shutting down Safari, then delete the following:
/Users/<user>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
/Users/<user>/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari
/Users/<user>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
/Users/<user>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
/Users/<user>/Library/Safari
Well, I swore I did all those, maybe except the "/Users/<user>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari" one, but all is well now! Browsing great. Thanks!

  • Safari hangs (spinning ball) 5 seconds after opening. Help?

I have exhausted my knowledge, time for some community help
I have a Macbook Pro 10.5.8 with Safari 5.0.5. Everything except the issue works great!
    Problem:
When I click to open Safari, it opens, loads the startpage and then hangs about 5 seconds later. The whole computer isn't usable until I force quit Safari.
Every 15 seconds or so it returns to 'normal' and I can click a menu, switch applications, try to Force Quit Safari, but the spinning ball returns and everything hangs 2 seconds later.
I can use Firefox with no issues, unless Safari is still open.
    What I have tried:
Inplace reinstall of OS X from CD.
    All the Software Updates
    Reinstall Safari from apple website.
    Reset Safari
    Empty Cache
    Everything from this post (https://discussions.apple.com/message/10671044#10671044)
    Everything from this post (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=8413681&postcount=6)
All to no avail, still same issue.
    Any help or ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Appleworks doesn't work on my Mac Mini - spinning ball loop

I get spinning ball, with activity monitor showing 99% cpu usage for appleworks. Problem occurres when clicking in area to switch to finder. Rest of system works but can't get spinning ball to stop. Have to force quit on Appleworks.
Mac mini - Intel (1 month old) OS 10.4.6 with latest updates applied, which included a firmware fix. Appleworks Version 6.2.9 (but same failure with 6.2.7)
As suggested by Peggy did file permission check/fix and removed preference file to force a clean new preference file. Doesn't help.
Appleworks V6.2.9 seems to work OK, at least with the limited usage, WP & SS, on my PowerPC G5.
    Any suggestions?
    Chuck

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Chuck
Obviously you found my user tip/posts on corrupt AppleWorks preferences although you said "preference file." There are four preference files in two different places. Take another look at my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for the file names & locations.
However, the spinning beach ball you see in AppleWorks has nothing to do with your Intel Mac or corrupt preferences but is the most complained about bug in AppleWorks 6 - known as the "Recent Items bug." The same problem will affect any Mac no matter what processor or OS. There are three user tips in the User Tips Library dealing with Recent Items.

The answer to (1) is yes. for OSX, there hasn't yet been a full-number release (they're all v10). Point releases come out every couple years or so, and usually cost about $130. So if you had 10.4 and wanted to upgrade to 10.5, you'd have to buy it. But updated numbers after the second point are free. So if you have 10.5, then 10.5.5 is a free download.
Question (2) I'm less sure about, but I would guess that all of those games would probably work. They don't list the particular video card in the Macbook as "Supported", but it's newer than the cards listed. All the other requirements are met.
From the requirements listed, I would guess that "medal of honor war chest" is a PPC game, which means it will probably run on the Intel Macbook, but under emulation. I think usually the newer Intels are fast enough that running PPC stuff under emulation should be fine, but I don't do much of that so I can't speak from experience.
I sometimes install Windows on a second partition on my Macs so I can dual boot, just for games. So there's that option too.

  • 2 fcpx problems, missing title after mac died & spinning ball

Hi my 2008 mac pro died and I replaced with a 2013 mac pro 2x6core 3.3 and 48gig ram so a resonable machine. Because I replaced it through insurance I removed all my media drives before hand but had to leave the system drive in for them to test, they concluded the machine was dead and kept the hard drive as part of the insurance claim, I can't get the hard drive back from them either.
after a totally fresh install but I have opened up my fcpx project it is saying missing title that i created in motion specifically for these project. I have tried to recreate the titles, with the same name etc but it still isn't seeing them, is there anyway of finding out what the old location would have been of the title just incase I am placing them in a different location from what it is expecting. I have looked in titles info tab but it doesnt say anything about location. I have lots of titles and it is going to take me about 5 days to rebuild everything which is time I can't afford to spend.
The other problem is fresh install of OS and fcpx motion etc, and every time I click the mouse I get that sodding spinning wheel for about 30 seconds everytime which makes it impossible to do anthing, this didn't do it on my old 2008 mac pro.
    help please

I'm assuming this title appeared in the FCP title browser. If so it's stored in the user Movies folder. There should be a Motion folder there with subfolders for generators, transitions, effects, and titles.

  • Need Help - Mac Mini no longer works with LG Television

Sometime ago (maybe about two months), my Mac Mini quit working with my LG Plasma HD TV. Currently, when I try to use the Mac Mini with the television, the screen displays a "no signal" message.
The Mac Mini is a one year old Intel Core Duo and is connected using a DVI to HDMI cable.
    I've troubleshooted:
    1. Connected the Mac Mini to our 42" Sharp Aquous LCD - it displays fine.
    2. Taken the Mac Mini to the Genius bar. It displayed on the genius' Apple display w/no probs.
    Since then, I've tried:
    1. Reinstalled/rolled back to Leopard DVDs (no updates applied) - No luck
    2. "Driving" the Mac Mini via Screen Sharing using my MacBook and monkeying with the Display preference pane. While screen sharing, I tried using SwitchResX, too (not too certain of the settings though) - No luck.
    Of note:
    1. Before the trouble began, I was pleasantly surprised to see "LG" (automatically) listed as the display in the Display preference panel. Support was literally plug and play. Currently, when I drive via Screen Sharing, "LG" is no longer listed. Alternatively, when I connect to the Sharp Aquous, the Display preference panel DOES list "Sharp" as the display.
    Any ideas?

I'd be interested in any resolution here. Here's my story:
I have a Mac Mini model MA723LL/A and a Haier P42LV6-T1 42" HDTV plasma with VGA and HDMI inputs. I first attempted to hook the Mac to the plasma TV using the DVI->VGA adapter that came with the Mac. I got no image at all on the TV, and the TV claimed 'No Signal'.
Then I used a DVI->HDMI adapter, and hooked the Mac to the TV thru the HDMI port. I got a picture and was happy. I setup iTunes, got the wireless working, surfed the web a bit and all was OK except the resolution seemed wonky. So I opened the Mac's settings panel to adjust the resolution, and as soon as I opened the settings panel, the screen went blank, with the TV claiming 'No Signal'. I shut off the Mac and rebooted, and from that point forward, what happens is this:
    press On Button->
    Apple Boot Screen->
    MacOS 10 loading->
    desktop For About 1 millisecond->
screen goes blank with TV claiming 'No Signal'
I hooked the Mac to my Dell 20" LCD monitor thru the monitor's DVI input and got a great picture. I tested all the resolution settings, and everything was fine. I have tested the Mac on the TV with all available resolution settings and it's always the same story (see above for sequence)
I'm kinda at the end of my rope. The Mac seems to be changing something on its video output at the end of its bootup, but I have no clue what. Has anyone seen anything like this? Any advice at all?

  • I need help mac users

Hello, I have a 2012 Macbook Pro. My issue is that my camera is always on. Even when I am not running any apps that use the camera. But when I do try and use facetime, or photobooth it says there is no camera connected. Does anyone know how to fix this?

This procedure may show which program is using the camera. It makes no changes, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. It will only work while the green LED is on.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data. The instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    sudo lsof -Fc +D /L*/Cor*/*/*/AppleCamera.plugin | sed '2!d;s/^.//' | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning.
If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

  • New MBP - endless spinning ball :(

I have had this MBP for about six months. It is a 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo, OS10.4.8. I had the spinning ball problem from the beginning, so I upgraded my memory to 1.5 GB. That has helped only slightly.
Lately I have been using it more professionally, more often - Photoshop CS2, pretty big files back and forth, scanning, managing files, etc. I am encountering the spinning ball constantly: navigating between files, changing file sizes, opening files, and especially working with the Bridge (I think the File Browser was better, at least performance wise).
I am really, really disppointed with this machine. It is not fast, it does not perform well, and most frustratingly, as I've stated, I get the hanging spinning ball all the time. It feels like the six year old PC laptop my wife finally got rid of, not a state-of-the-art Mac laptop.
I called Apple a few months back and they said the warranty was only for hardware, and I had to troubleshoot software issues on the Apple site.
I also bought this machine in the States, and brough it here to the UK. (I don't know if that effects my warranty).
I can't work professionally with this product, I thought Apple was better than this - I also have a G5 desktop machine which works pretty well.
    What should I do??
    G5, dual 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    G5, dual 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    G5, dual 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    G5, dual 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    G5, dual 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Christopher, as others have mentioned, your problems are due to running legacy PPC apps via Rosetta emulation. And these are substantial programs with big RAM and CPU appetites.
Rosetta effectively doubles their RAM demands and cuts their performance by about 50% due to emulating PPC instructions on the fly.
The spinning balls are due to page outs in the Virtual Memory system, which uses the Hard Drive to make up for too little real RAM.
The more legacy apps you are running in Rosetta, the more virtual memory is used -- and this affects the responsiveness of all applications, even Intel native or Universal ones.
The solutions are: 1) run fewer legacy PPC apps; 2) get more RAM; 3) make sure you have adequate free space (at least 10% free) on your hard drive to allow VM to work efficiently.
If you fire up Utilities > Activity Monitor you can see which PPC legacy apps are running. Try to get that down to none. Activity Monitor will also tell you how many page-outs are occuring in Virtual Memory. My guess is: alot!

  • Firefox 3.6.24 (for Mac) hangs watching Youtube videos

Firefox 3.6 for Mac hangs (spinning wheel) while watching videos on Youtube.com. There is no problem selecting a video, but once a video starts to play, Firefox shows the spinning wheel if any mouse action is attempted. The video continues to play fine, but no mouse action can be taken. This happens with most, though not all youtube videos.
This started to happen a few days ago (late Oct?) after Youtube made cosmetic changes to its webpages. I am pretty sure that these changes are the cause.
'''Does anyone else have this problem?
    Can anyone suggest a workaround?'''
System: 2009 MacBook Pro, 4GB memory
    Notes:
My Safari - an older version 3 - doesn't have this problem. Of course, it doesn't show the new features of the Youtube pages.
I am up-to-date with Adobe Flash Player - version 10 - which I had before the problem began to appear. I cannot try version 11 because I don't have OS X 10.6. I've tried disabling "hardware acceleration" within Flash Player Settings, to no avail.
I haven't changed any of my plugins or extensions, except update DownloadHelper.
I tried a suggestion found in another post to no avail: increase the value of "browser.sessionstore.interval".

I found the cause and the fix !
Apparently, I had somehow "caught" the new Gray Youtube Interface - where the backrounds of all youtube pages are gray.
I cured that ailment by deleting all youtube cookies.
Now I have the old youtube pages, and no more hangs !
Isn't there anyone else who experiences hangs with the new youtube interface?
I don't want Youtube making my Mac act like an expensive paperweight.

  • Help need my mac pro for school..it has Grey screen..spinning wheel...repaid disk ok...repair disk permission all repaired but one warning...

Help need my mac pro for school..it has Grey screen..spinning wheel...
I think I have  mountain lion OS X....I have done I think almost every suggestion I've seen in discussion boards.
Boot in recovery repaired disk...ok...repair disk permission...all repaired but one warning...I've tried to reinstall lion (without losing data) and it Got all the way to one minute to be done and then the time change back two hours and kept doing this all night long.  I haven't done a back up due to no external for time machine.
I hope someone can please help me I've been going crazy for a week now trying to figure this out.  I use my computer for school and I'm currently very behind from in my school work  thank you
Also I've checked my available space  424.91 free of 750 gigs....disk is verified

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Try holding the Shift key while your Mac is starting to start into safe mode. Then, after starting in safe mode, open Finder, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type /Library/StartupItems. Then, empty this folder and restart the Mac.
If your Mac starts after doing this, it was a problem with a third-party app that starts automatically when you turn on the computer. It won't start automatically anymore after doing that

  • Safari Mac 5.0.5 crashing, hanging, beach balling at least once a day

I have recently found that Safari (using 5.0.5 (5533.21.1)--Mac) crashes and hangs quite a bit.  I'm only running 2GB of memory, which can account for the spinning ball to some degree.  But I've seen Safari crash and disappear, requiring re-running it, on a number of occasions... enough to make me want to report it here.  I am using Leopard 10.5.8 too.

  • Spinning ball problems--need to do a clean install--have questions

    Hi
    background:
I have a G4 (quicksilver) since July 2002, it came with OS9.2 and OS10.1.3. I've upgraded a few times since and currently have 10.3.9. I mainly work in OS9.2 due to most of my programs being used are only in 9 and the PC network I'm hooked up to likes it better. I boot up in 9.2 -- 80%of the time.
I'm not sure when the problem started in OSX since I'm not working there alot but I started to get the spinning ball in installer, software update and some preferences. So I reloaded (archive/install) from 10.3.5 upgrade disk but couldn't further upgrade to 10.3.9 due to that spinning ball-- still there even after I reloaded 10.3.5.
I've run Disk Utility from the 10.3.5 upgrade disk (repaired disk, repaired permissions) and then I again reloaded (archive install) 10.3.5 and then upgraded to 10.3.9 and this time it worked because I went immediately to the 10.3.9 to install.
BUT I still have the spinning balls in almost everything. Almost seems worse now. I can't even use Disk Utility from the utility folder on my mac without getting the spinning ball.
OS9.2 is fine and I would like to leave it that way.
But it's looking like I need to do a clean install--which means I'll have to reload OS9.2 -- correct?
My question is for a clean install do I need to go back to the original disks that came with my Mac (OS10.1.3) or can I do a clean install with the 10.3.5 upgrade disks. And if I do a clean install from 10.3.5 can I still install OS9.2?
Also what are those Software Restore disks for? They came with the original set of CDs, are they used in the clean install?
Thanks for any help you can give

    Keith:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You really should start a new topic, as threadjacking is frowned upon in these Forums.
The spinning ball or the beachball effect is a result of the computer spinning its wheels, so to speak, as it does not have sufficient computing power to deal with the task at hand. This can be caused by many things.
I am almost certain that it has nothing to do with the latest Panther update. I did them all with no problem.
Is there a way to deal with it?
    1. Sufficient RAM
    2. Sufficient available HDD capacity.
    3. Regular maintenance.
    4. Repairing Disk Permisssions before and after any installations.
In terms of RAM you should aim to max out your RAM if you can. I don't have much information on your computer specs so I can't give any more specific information about that.
You should have 10 to 15 percent of your internal HDD as free space. This gives your computer room for virtual memory to be most efficient.
Here is an article on maintenace that has good advice and links to resources: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607640&#607640
In addition to repairing permissions, another simple procedure is to reset the PRAM. You should boot from your install disk and run Repair Disk from Disk Utility on the install disk. I run monthly diagnostics and repairs with Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior. In addition running regular CRON cleaning with a utility like MacJanitor, Cocktail, Macaroni or Onyx (all linked in the article above) keeps your machine running smoothly and minimizes the potential for major problems.
I think I have given you enough to chew on for now. Post back if you have further questions.
    Good luck.

My Mac has always been slow since I had it and migrated my PC content to my Mac.  I have run EtreCheck and hope that this might illuminate the cause of my issues, but worry that it may not.  ANYTHING I ask the Mac to do will be slow and inevitably cause a spinning ball for a while.  I have kept the system up to date.  I have a lot of photos in iPhoto but can't imagine this can be the cause?
Any help is much appreciated.  The Etrecheck output is below:
    Many thanks.
    Problem description:

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
    Wait for the final message
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the last message you saw. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Mail hangs with spinning ball

I've spent the better part of today trying to get my Mail.app to work. Everytime I launch mail I get the spinning ball. I use an IMAP account.
I have deleted the entire Mail folder, com.apple.mail.plist and even started from scratch.
I have tried it on another machine, still the spinning ball
I tried Thunderbird and it works, no problem.
I tried setting Mail.app to just get headers and still it hangs.
It seems to hang while "Adding Message"
    Any other ideas
    Thanks.
      Mac OS X (10.4.5)

some users here make a point of erasing the HD to zeros & Installing the os from scratch on any new mac they buy. Admittedly a full re-install is rarely needed....but sometimes it's the quickest/most practical way to resolve a problem.
I'll hazard a guess here - & suggest that the mail issues might be related to importing the mail from panther.... there are a large number of threads relating to this. If the mbp hasn't been personalised/apps installed too much ( in 2 hrs) I'll venture that re-installing may well be your easiest option - but don't import the info from the Panther machine at this stage. ( that option is always available at any time using Migration Assistant in Applications/Utilities/ )
For setting up Mail manually, see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106683
Having said that - personally I'd try deleting the Mail account that you imported & quitting Mail. Then deleting the file com.apple.Mail.plist which can be found in /Home/Library/Preferences/ then start Mail & set up manually as in the above link.
    * Note that you will lose all messages, settings etc in Mail - but I figure since Mail isn't working, that's OK?. Also - Only do this if the original panther messages are still safely on the old iMac *
If you find that Mail works ok after this - Wait before you import the old messages from Panther & check out the various threads about it here, or post your own question. Ernie Stamper knows this stuff inside & out.
