Need help. Mac won't start up from HDD

My problem is: I went to system preferences, chose network startup from the Startup menu. My mac rebooted itself and tried to connect from a network drive. After it didn't find any network drive I force restarted it. When it booted up again it was the flashing question mark folder on the start-up gray screen. I followed everyone i knows advice to try to start it up from the start-up disk.
I also tried holding Apple-s. I held down the command button, option button, and control button for a least 45 seconds each. Nothing has worked.
I am 100% positive that it is because the computer will not start up from the Internal Hard drive, Which i am also 100% possitive is not broken or corrupt. I can use all the advice and solutions you guys will give me.
Thank You,
Brody6786
p.s. the following keys don't work on my keyboard:
both shifts, z, a, q, 1, f1, delete.
I have an external keyboard but it seems it doesn't turn on until the gray screen appears.

HI,
When it booted up again it was the flashing question mark folder on the start-up gray screen.
That can mean several things. One, your Mac can't find a System Folder to boot from. Or two, the hard drive is failing or failed.

    Need help, system won't start up
    When I turn on the system I hear a loud squeaking noise that could be coming from the hard drive, it does it for moment then a blank white screen appears w/ a tiny folder in the middle of the screen with a "?" blinking on and off on the folder. I never had any problems until now. What can I do, any suggestions.

    hi capitala1,
    +When I try to install the operating system to the internal drive, I don't see a destination option for that drive like I did for the external+
    Do you mean that it doesn't show up when you try to startup holding down the option key, or that it doesn't show up in Disk Utility when started up on the external disk?
    +...You think the drive is bad, if so, what can I do to retrieve some of the data off of it.+
    Yes, it sounds like your hard drive is bad. Do you have access to techtools or Disk Warrior? either of these may be able to repair the drive enough to extract your info from it, if disk utility can't.
    I know that there are shops that specialize in extracting info from bad hard drives, but they tend to be pretty expensive. I am sure others on this forum will be able to help you find one if you are interested.

    PS it isn't going to help this time, but remember in the future, backup, everything important to you regularly!

  • Idiot needs help-iBook won't start up

    Ive read a few topics that are similar to my problem but not really clever enough to get it working.
    Yesterday i was using my iBook (had it about 5 years now with no problems at all) and i had a grey/black screen come up that said 'restart computer' so i turned off the iBook,now it won't start up at all.
    Ive tried removing and re-starting numerous times so far with no results.
    Ive tried safe mode too,but i'm not getting a chime when pressing start,so don't know when to hold shift down.
    At the moment when pressing start i get the Apple screen and the spinning gear,then it goes to MAC OS X screen and the loading bar,but when it reaches the end it just stays on that screen.
    I really am a computer novice,its all above me even though i'm 44!!,i love my iBook and don't really want to get another one just yet,plus all of my photos are still in iPhoto on this laptop. All other items i have on desktop too i don't really want to erase,my iTunes is stored on an external HD so thats ok,but any help would be appreciated.
    I'm just going to try and locate the original disc that came with it,to try re-starting with that to see if i get any joy.

    HI,
    i'm not getting a chime when pressing start
    iBook,now it won't start up at all.
    Not a good sign. Hopefully the startup disk isn't failing, but be prepared just in case.

  • Need help--Classic won't start

    I still have a couple of OLD apps that require System 9. When I attempt to open either of them I get the "Classic is starting" progress bar, but it never quite finishes. I can start Classic okay with extensions off but then I can't use the printer, and my old copy of Photoshop Elements won't load no matter what I try. I get an error message when I try to run "Install Applications and Classic Support" from my installation disk. I really don't want to part with the $$ for System 10.4 AND two new pieces of software right now. Any ideas?

    If Classic is booting with extensions off, that means that some preference or extension or control panel or control strip module has a problem. You can use Extensions Manager to turn off most of them and start up and see if the problem recurs. If so, then one of the extensions etc that you didn't turn off is the problem. If not, then one of those you did turn off is the problem. If you still have the problem, make a note of the extensions you've already turned off, and turn off a few more and try again. If you don't have the problem, turn on a few extensions and try again. Repeat until you have identified the problem extension.

    Acrobat Pro 9 for mac won't launch, reloaded from disk when hard drive needed to be replace. It's in applications folder but there is an X on the Acrobat Reinstall icon. What should I do.

    Hi Janice,
    What version of Mac OS are you using?
    Adobe does not recommend migrating the software from one disk to the other.
    Please run the setup file for Acrobat and reinstall the software. You might want to delete the existing version of Acrobat installed before reinstalling it.

  • Mac won't start blinking folder with ?

    Hello have a question, my mac won t start, it appears a folder with a ? Inside....can anybody help me.....

    That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
    Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
    When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
    If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
    If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Mac won't start after failed OS upgrade

    I attempted to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard using an installation disc. The installion failed and now my mac won't start. It hangs on the apple logo screen for about 2 minutes then dies. I've tried booting from the disc and using the repair disk utility but I get an error saying the disk can't be repaired and instructing me to back up my files and erase the disk. Problem is, I can't get to my files because all I can do is boot from the disc drive. Can anyone suggest a way get the installion to work, or a way to back up my files?
    iMac is 3 years old, 4 Gb ram and 2.66 Gh processor
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    Possibly we can save some of the files.
    When booted from the Install Disc...
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
          *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    Hopefully you have another external drive and can Image the whole internal drive to an external.

  • Mac won't start up and shows grey screen

    My mac won't start up this morning ? It has a full charge of battery and even plugged in it just shows the grey screen. Any help.

    Please restart your Mac and hold the 'Option'-key to see your start-up discs. If you do not see any start-up discs it could be your hard disk cable that is faulty. This is a common problem with Macbooks, but I am not sure this issue has been fixed with the Retina models. I've had this problem with my 2012 Pro, and a new cable did the job. Very easy to do yourself!
    You can also start Internet Recovery (need wifi or cable) and start up Disk Utilities to see if your hard disk shows up there.
    Please let me know.

  • Mac won't start (Kernel Panics)

    Hello,
    My mac won't start up. It turns on, gets as far as the spinning circle and apple logo then a dark screen comes down with a Kernel Panic message. This occurred roughly three months ago and I ended up taking the mac into the regent street store where it was fixed under apple care warranty. My care has now run out, and the 90 day repair warranty has expired but the problem is back so obviously hasn't been fixed properly. Is there anything that can be done about this?
    Every time I boot up the computer the message appears, I have tried rebooting with the safe option as well as re installing OSX from the original disks. The install completes successfully but upon restart it pops up with the original kernel panic message.
    Luckily I have everything backed up so am prepared to try anything to get it running.
    Thanks.

    Let us know, but since you obviously have another machine, have you tried Target Disk Mode and then Disk Utility?
    use TDM to access Disk Utility.
    1. Click the First Aid tab.
    2. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    3. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    4. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
    Please post back,

  • Every other day, my mac won't start up

    every other day, my mac won't start up. my keyboard would light up and i hear the system start but nothing is appearing in the screen. i would have to press the start button until the screen actually shows up.. why does it do that?

    Have you just tried repairing with Disk Utility?
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • I need help with controlling two .swf's from third.

    Hi, thanks for reading!
    I need help with controlling two .swf's from third.
    I have a problem where I need to use a corporate designed
    .swf in a digital signage solution, but have been told by the legal
    department that it can not be modified in any way, I also can't
    have the source file yada yada. I pulled the .swfs from their
    website and I decompiled them to see what I was up against.
    The main swf that I need to control is HCIC.swf and the
    problem is it starts w/ a preloader, which after loading stops on a
    frame that requires user input (button press) on a play button,
    before the movie will proceed and play through.
    What I have done so far is to create a container swf,
    HCIC_container.swf that will act as Target for the HCIC.swf, and
    allow me to send actionscript to the file I'm not allowed to
    modify.
    I managed to get that done with the help of someone on
    another forum. It was my hope that the following script would just
    start HCIC.swf at a frame past the preloader and play button, and
    just play through.
    var container:MovieClip = createEmptyMovieClip("container",
    getNextHighestDepth());
    var mcLoader:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader();
    mcLoader.addListener(this);
    mcLoader.loadClip("MCIC.swf", container);
    function onLoadInit(mc:MovieClip) {
    mc.gotoAndPlay(14);
    But unfortunately it didn't solve my problem. Because there
    is a media-controller.swf, that is being loaded by HCIC.swf that
    has the controls including the play button to start HCIC.swf.
    Here's a link to a .zip file with all 3 .swf files, and all 3
    .fla files.
    http://www.axiscc.com/temp/HCIC.zip
    What I need to do is automatically start the HCIC.swf file
    bypassing the pre-loader and play button without editing it or the
    media-controller.swf in anyway. So all the scripting needs to be
    done in HCIC_container.swf.
    I know this is confusing, and its difficult to explain, but
    if you look at the files it should make sense.
    ActionScripting is far from my strong point, so I'm
    definitely over my head here.
    Thanks for your help.

    Got my solution on another forum.

  • Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier)

    I just got off the phone with an AppleCare agent. My iBook OS 10.4 wouldn't start - it just went to a blue screen. I'm happy to say that the agent got everthing working again and said that she would email me an article that would help if it ever happens again. She emailed me "Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier)" I have 10.4, is this article any use for me or was I emailed the wrong articel. Is there an article "Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.4 or later)"????

    Thank you for yoiur response. I'll click on that link and add my input..
    Don't be put off by the title. The document's just as
    valid for Tiger, especially if those are the same
    steps that fixed your problem. The article was
    revised Feb 2006 and someone forgot to update it to
    mention Tiger. Go to
    <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
    , click on the It's good, but... link and
    tell them it should be updated to include a reference
