Need help migrating mail to new machine.....manually

I need to wax my machine and start over. I have tried to use migration assistant but the problem I need to cure comes along too. So we want to just start over. I know how to manually move itunes and iphoto. But what folders have my mail and bookmarks for safari?
Thanks for the help

if you backup the whole ~/Library/Mail/ Folder you'll have everything.
it depends on your email - if they are IMAP then you only need to back up the mailboxes that are stored locally on your mac. If they are POP you'll want everything.
For pop I'd suggest to do a "get mail" and make a new mailboxes (call it INBOX or anything you want) then move all of the inbox content into that mailbox.
I find it less confusing that way and when you setup your email account on your new mac you'll get all the POP emails coming in and they'll be all marked as Unread. But because you've moved all latest e-mails to your newly created INBOX you can safely delete those "unread" emails that comes in when you set up your mail.
hope that helps!

  • Need help migrating Mail/iCal/Address data from 10.3 to 10.7

Hi, I'm helping a relative migrate from an 8-year old iMac (10.3.9) to a new one running Lion. Mostly it's going to be a clean sweep app-wise, but we need to move iCal, Mail and Address Book data across. Of course, these apps have changed a fair bit in across the last 4 'full' versions of OS X, and the folder structures within the user library no longer match between machines. Can anyone advise me what to copy and what to junk? I appreciate this is a bit of a vague question, but that's the situation. Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

The webtogo was dropped in 11.x.    so the URL has changed.  This is one of those situations which needs to be handled by support.   Have you filed a request with support yet?
    thanks

  • HT201250 I am very frustrated. New to iMac products. Just bought a 27" iMac two days ago. Received no manual, no booklet with ID registration number, etc. Need help migrating PC to iMac. How do I get in touch?

Need help migrating pc to imac. Do not have manual. Trying to get infornation online, but, cannot get an answer.
I have downloaded pc migration assistant to pc windows 8 pro. Was able to get imac to finally give me "the number"
Did the same with pc received number once, not same as imac. Pop up window with info dissappers and cannot recover
What am I doing wrong? Paid extra for extended support package and it took hours to finally get it registered and approved.
However, no help. Yikes, I feel like a make another great mistake!

First: If you purchased AppleCare you should call back at 1-800-APL-CARE and ask for further assistance.  You'll want to learn how to retrieve your operating system version and your IMac's serial number as you'll need these for when you call AppleCare:
Click on the Black Apple in the top left hand corner of your Imac's physical monitor
Click on About this Mac from the drop down menu
Below the silver Apple and "OS X" it will say "Version 10.x.x"  (If this number is not 10.8.4, run Software Update by hitting the button marked "Software Update")
Click on this number twice in a row.  This is your machine's serial number.  (zeros can be used; the letter "O" is never used).
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1349 for details how to find serial numbers on Apple products
If you have an Apple ID (you can create one at appleid.apple.com), you can login to supportprofile.apple.com, register an Apple product, and sign up for VoicePass, which, if you give your product a name e.g. Maria's Imac, you can speak that over the phone and skip having to give the serial number when you call.
If you have an Apple ID, you can also call AppleCare and ask them to activate VoicePass.
This is the link for your tech specs: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP667
This is the link for your quick start guide: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/imac_late2012_quickstart.pdf

Second: this is an educated guess: Your new Imac and your PC need to be either on the same wifi network or you need to connect them physically with an Ethernet cable (available at Radio Shack, Wal Mart, etc).  My guess is that they are not, and so your IMac and PC are not talking to each other.  That might be why you are seeing a different code on the PC.
Time Machine would not be relevant to your issue.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796 is the link to relevant instructions, however it left out some housekeeping you should do on your Imac before you begin a migration
Run Software Update on the IMac to confirm that the latest updates are installed.
On the IMac, make sure that you have the latest versions of any third-party software.
On the source Mac, open System Preferences, click Sharing, and make sure there is a name in the Computer Name field.
Do not let either computer go to sleep while you are attempting to migrate. To disable sleep on the IMac
Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu.
Choose Energy Saver from the View menu.
Adjust the "Computer sleep:" slider to Never. (Change this back after the migration is done).
You can adjust "Display Sleep" to a few minutes - this won't affect the migration
Uncheck the box if checked next to "Put Hard Disks to sleep when possible"
I don't know Windows 8 but this link looks promising as to how to disable sleep: http://techmell.net/how-to/disable-enable-sleep-mode-hibernate-windows-8/
Once you've done this, either connect both Mac and PC to the same wifi network and surf the web with each to confirm that connection is working - or connect them to each other with an Ethernet cable.
Then relaunch Migration Assistant on your Imac and your PC, and follow the instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796 starting with your IMac, or call AppleCare back.
Understand that if you have further issues, you'll need to help AppleCare help you by:
walking them through the steps you've taken in Migration Assistant
letting them guide you as they isolate the issue to either:
    The Imac's software
    The IMac's hardware
    The PC's software
    The PC's hardware
Firewall settings (maybe - especially if 3rd party firewalls are installed)
    The wifi connection, if used
    The ethernet connection, if used
I think the issue is likely what I guessed, or it's a software issue.
To learn more about your new Mac, I recommend this link: http://www.apple.com/support/imac/intel/
    And this book: http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/0789749890
I am a technical support professional who troubleshoots Macs all day long.  I do this for a living.  The book above is the most accurate, and easy to understand book I've seen with respect to using Mountain Lion and its various applications.  It's for a MacBook but the focus is on the software which is why I recommend it.
Don't feel like you have to rush to upgrade to OS X Mavericks.  In fact, you should always confirm both all the hardware and software you use is compatible with any new operating system before you upgrade.  And ask yourself: "why do I need it now?"  Because it's new is not a good answer.
In the future, specifying any troubleshooting others have done will help those on these boards help you.  Also, don't let a specific issue lead you to assume you've made an all-encompassing mistake.  It's just one issue, and it's resolvable.
And everyone else: giving a dozen recommendations for reading will only leave the petitioner bewildered.  Start with three.  And try responding with a hypothesis as to what's causing the primary problem!

    Hello
I bought my wife a new MacBook Pro, in setting it up for her, I took her Time Machine external drive to migrate onto the new machine but her old MBP not only was on 10.6, it was my old machine which I was still Administrator for.
i plugged in the external drive to start the migration process after entering her name and username from the old machine which gave me the options on transferring the old data over.
I also unchecked the Administrative end that had my info hoping that ONLY her data, files, etc., would be the ones sent over to her new machine which I wanted her to be the ONLY Administrator for. All went like clockwork until the restart.
Normally the screen should show the username and only need the password but both entries were blank, as in ‘Other’ sign in option available only. I entered her name and password, nothing….used her username and password, nothing. Used my old Administrator name and password, NOTHING!
I tried defaulting to factory settings from the Restore feature but it directs me to notify Apple. I tried in Terminal to change the password, nothing. I tried to boot from MY external drive and it doesn’t recognize it. I tried to even use my external drive which actually has the Mavericks upgrade, nothing!
Basically I can only get the startup screen which isn’t accepting the username/password or the Restore feature which doesn’t offer any options helpful!
Please, how do I start from scratch and start over here? Or simply change the Administrator name and password so I can proceed with everything thats already on there? I wish I could even boot from another drive but no luck on anything!

First, on the old machine, make your wife's account an admin one. Log into it and delete yours. Then, update the TM backup. Finally, use Internet recovery mode, ⌘⌥R, erase the HD, and restore the OS. One first boot, follow the steps outlined in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • Need help migrating users from dead 10.4.0 server to 10.5.8 server

    Hello,
We have an ancient xserv (G4, SCSI drives I think) that was running 10.4.0 server, serving http, AFP and SMB, and doing the streaming for the college radio station to the internet(qt broadcaster was sending from another machine to this machine).
Apples recommended process for migration to a new machine is to first upgrade to 10.4.1 before exporting. However, the hard drive on this machine is as ancient as it is and the initial install process failed with an error, leaving the machine unbootable.
I used CCC to make a copy of the os to an identical drive, but this is not bootable either, nor can I sucessfully upgrade it to another version.
Is there some way to move all the config to the new server (MacPro running 10.5.8) without exporting from the old server, since this is not possible?
There are hundreds of users and user websites. I copied the websites over to the user folder and they are accessable but not by the original urls.
    Thanks,
    Joel

  • I desperately need help with Mail, specifically sending

For Starters:  I am on OSX 10.9.2 and am trying to use mail 7.2.
    https://discussions.apple.com/post!input.jspa?container=2998&containerType=14&qu estion=I+desperately+need+help+with+Mail%2C+specifically+sending
I cannot send.  I have been at this for hours and hours and hours.  Here are the details.
my mail server however is s1.sistercompany.net
I can receive email just fine.  I can also send mail just find having set this up on my iphone and also in thunderbird (which i hate hate hate hate hate hate hate, which is why I am desperate to set up mail)
The settings in thunderbird are as follows:
    Servername: s1.sistercompany.net
    port: 465
    Authentication method:  normal password
    Connection Security:  SSL/TLS
However, I just can't get this to work in Mail.  When I write an email and hit send I get a popup that says:
Cannot send message using the server s1.sistercompany.net
The certifcate for this server is invalid.
Now, my tech guy says yeah the certifacte is invalid because you are going through sistercompany server, there should be some way to just accept the certifcate anyway (but he has never used mail before).
So I have serached around and come up with this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11706
Which tells me to use the verify certificate dialogue, which I would do except there is no verify certificate dialog.  Any thoughts?

  • Need help migrating from Mail 3.6 to Mail 4.2

    I just bought a new 27" i7 iMac w/ 8gb ram, 1 TB hard drive.
I'm trying to migrate my settings over from my old G4 17" Powerbook. I'm running 10.5.8 on the laptop with Mail 3.6.
How do I import my mailboxes from my old computer onto the new one? I've tried copying the old Mail folder over to the new computer over firewire. That didn't work. I then archived the mailboxes on the old computer and brought those files over to the new machine. I tried to import them on the new machine directly through mail, no dice.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

you need to do it with both the Mail folder AND the mail preference file.
quit Mail and copy over the whole folder /users/username/library/mail AND the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. start Mail and it should look as it did on the old computer.
BTW, using Migration Assistant you can migrate your entire user including Mail, address book, music and so on.

  • I need help migrating my applications from my old G5 power mac to my new macbook pro

Im struggling migrating my applications from my G5 power mac to my new macbook pro. My G5 runs on OS X 10.5.8 and when using the traditional tool of Migration assistant my new macbook urges me to update my G5 which it obviously it can't due to its original licensing agreements. I have no codes for my software as it came on the pc: I need , Logic pro 9, the complete adobe CS4 package and final cut pro . How can i put this on my new mac ??

So you never really owned the software to begin with then. Software is licensed and has to be transferred and when you bought your Mac (PC) they really did not.
I have no codes for my software as it came on the pc: I need , Logic pro 9, the complete adobe CS4 package and final cut pro . How can i put this on my new mac ??
As for a temporary solution, you can run 10.6.8 as a VM under later versions of Mac OS X like Mavericks so you can have use of Rosetta and it runs the PowerPC code.
Your new Intel Mac can run Windows natively also, can dual boot both Mac and Windows, if that is of any use, for some it is.
Right now you are not in the MacBook Pro forum! :-) This is Mac Pro sans "Book" and is not a laptop at all, but a 'trash can' or tower.

  • I need help with Mail

I recently erased my HD and reinstalled Yosemite. I wanted to manually move my saved emails over so I researched and it said to go to library/Mail/V2 and copy everything in there from the old system and paste it into the new system. I did this but got this message...
I don't know what this means. I should have gone online and asked, but tried to fix it myself. I thought if I deleted the gmail accounts and re-entered them it would fix it. When I opened Mail preferences, choose one of the two accounts and hit the "-" button, it gave me a message saying they couldn't be deleted and to do it from the system preferences, so I did that. Now Internet accounts in system preferences shows them as gone, but they are still in the Mail.app. I tried deleting them again from Mail preferences and it won't let me. I then tried to go re-add them to the system preferences and it will add a google account but says there is an error. I am fearful that I have really screwed my computer up. Please help! How do I add them back to my system preferences without errors and what do I do about the above pic of the message that keeps popping up in Mail? How can I delete the gmail accounts if I need to if Mail won't let me. I also haven't gotten a single new email in any of my accounts, including my iCloud and comcast ones since I did this all. What should I do?

    Back up all data.
Unlock the Network preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Cllck Advanced, open the DNS tab, and change the server addresses to the following:
              8.8.8.8
              8.8.4.4
That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.
    In Safari, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. Any difference?
    Notes:
    1. If you lose Internet access after making the above change to your network settings, delete the Google servers in the  Network preference pane, then select the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease. That should restore the original DNS settings; otherwise restore them yourself. Remember that you must click Apply in order for any changes to take effect.
    2. I don't use Google DNS myself, though I have tested it, and I'm not recommending it or any other DNS provider; the server addresses are offered merely for testing purposes. There may be privacy and technical issues involved in using that service, which you should investigate personally before you decide whether to keep the settings. Other public DNS services exist.

  • Migration to a new machine lost all the background files for iWeb site

    Help!
I have just migrated to a new mac pro from my old G5 power mac. I use the migration tool to move all my stuff over to the new machine.
When i started up iWeb and looked at my site, all the background items are gone. it tells me there are missing files. these are all the standard iWeb theme files.
i don't even know where to start. where are these files supposed to be? can i transfer them over manually from the old mac to the new one?
i really don't want to re assign themes for 100 or so pages.
    thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Manually copy the domain.sites2 file that's in your *+User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder+* on the G5 to the same location on your new Mac Pro, replacing the domain file that's there now due to the migration assistant. See if that will open with all files.

  • Migrating Server To New Machine?

Has anyone here tried to clone a server configuration to a new machine (like completely different hardware)?
We currently have an eMac in the office running OS X Tiger Server (I know I know) as our directory server, mail, web, file, and home directory server. It's got a lot of e-mail, work files, web sites, users, etc on it. I just bought a new powermac to replace it but I'm wondering if it's possible for me to 'clone' (like say with CarbonCopyCloner) the e-mac into the powermac.
    Will that work?
I'm finding lots of software migration guides (eg. upgrading to a new version of OS X Server) but no server hardware migration guides like upgrading to a whole new machine...
I'm sort of hoping that I could come in on a Saturday and transfer the server to a new machine and have everything be as it was, meaning the users wouldn't even notice. Except things might be a little faster/snappier for them of course.
Am I in fantasy land? Any help or experiences in this area would be much appreciated!
Technical Side Note: eMac is a G4 800Ghz, new (actually used) powermac is a dual G4 1.3Ghz

No problem cloning machine to machine as long as the OS supports the target machine. In your case, any 10.4 server will will run on the dual.
    Clone away....
You could also run a test... boot the eMac in firewire target disk mode, then startup the Dual G4 from the eMac's hard drive (option key on boot). It should start-up and run just fine (although a bit slower considering firewire interface).
Once up and running, you could stop services and clone from the live eMac drive to a freshly erased Dual G4 internal drive.

  • Migrating to a New Machine

I'm currently using a PPC Mac Mini, but recently purchased a used G5 to replace it. I'd like to have as seamless a transition as possible; I have an external HD enclosure which holds a SATA internal drive as my backup drive, and I'm planning on using Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my Mini's startup drive to that external drive. Once that's done, I'd like to simply pull that SATA drive out of the external enclosure and mount it inside the G5.
From a software standpoint, is there any particular reason why that wouldn't work? I'm thinking back to the olden days, when system installs might come with specialized extensions or be custom tailored for certain pieces of hardware--is there likely to be anything in my Mini's system that would make the G5 say 'Wha?' and choke? Am I better off just using Migration Assistant, or could I theoretically just swap the drive in?
Any suggestions would be welcome! TIA!

I perhaps should have been clearer on the "new" machine--it's a dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 (PPC, not Intel).
    According to these specs:
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMacG5.html
...the G5 came from the factory with a SATA drive, and the diagrams in the manual's section on adding or replacing an internal drive certainly appear to show SATA connectors on the drive. Am I missing something on that front?
As for Migration Assistant, does that grab all of a user's settings (i.e. preferences files in the Library folder, etc.) and incorporate them into the "new" machine's Library, or does it just grab my files (i.e. Documents folder, Applications folder, etc.) and copy them for me and leave me to put the pieces back together?
The biggest issue I'm trying to avoid is going back and rebuilding all of my preferences--stuff like resetting my network settings, rebuilding window layouts in Photoshop, all of the stuff that really personalized my Mini to the way I wanted it to be.
Thanks for the tips so far!

  • Easiest/Best way to migrate to a new machine

I got a new Intel Mac (wooo-whooo!) and I need to move my Lightroom stuff over to the new Mac from my old G5. I had my all image files pointed to by Lightroom as opposed to imported into my Lightroom directory. So what is the best way to get Lightroom on my NEW Mac so it is identical to where I left off with my old one (ie, all my collections in order, keywords, color correction data etc.).
What is the best course of action? Is it as easy as just copying my lightroom database to the Lightroom folder on my new Mac and pointing to the new image directory? Which should I do first, point to the images or replace the existing database?
Such migrations have proven far more difficult and error prone with some of my other Apps (iPhoto, iTunes), so before I take on the task, I want to make sure I ma going about it the wrong way so I don't create problems.
Any ideas, suggestion, warnings and details about how to go about this would be most apprecfated.
    -Nick

    Nick:
Grab your trusty Firewire cable, connect the two machines and boot the G5 so that it's drive(s) appear on the desktop of the Intel Mac. Now just drag-and-drop all the image folders to the new machine.
But something tells me you already know about this method.
