NEED HELP! Modem keeps disconnecting w/K7T266 Pro & WinXP

My system:
K7T266 Pro
Athlon 1333MH
256Mb DDR 2100
MSI GeForce 2 MX, 32Mb
Zoom V.92 internal modem
SB Live! 5.1
2 x 80Gb Maxtor HD
LiteOn 16x12x40 CD-RW
USB mouse
340 W Enlight Power Supply
This system worked fine on the internet when I was running Win98.  I upgraded to WinXP and now the modem keeps disconnecting shortly after connecting (but it always connects for a short period of time).
Here's what I have tried:  Reloaded WinXP Home Edition on a newly formatted HD using a clean install (not an upgrade) and the NT file system.  Loaded the latest MSI 4-in-1 drivers and upgraded Bios to latest version (v1.9).  Reloaded all the software.  Got all the latest XP drivers and WinXP updates.  Have tried 4 different brands of modems, internal and external.  Have tried modems in different PCI slots (currently using PCI slot 3 with SB in slot 4).  Have tried modem on different Com ports (currently using Com 3).  Have tried slowing down the com port speed.  There is no IRQ sharing with the modem.  Have tried different phone jacks and cords (the same ones that work fine on the older HP Win98 computer I am writing this on).  Have tried 2 different ISPs (currently using CompuServe).  Have reloaded the ISP software several times (trying different versions) and currently have their latest XP version - ISP says others are not having this problem with their software (have spent hours with their technical help with no resolution).  Not using any ad blocker or anti-virus software (yet).
Nothing I have tried has made any difference so far.  Am I missing something?  I don't want to go back to Win98!
Oh ya, another minor annoyance:  My system freezes after sitting idle for a while, even though the Windows power scheme is set to Always On and no screensaver.  Otherwise, everything else works fine.

Hello everyone,
I was gone for a few days, but when I got home I was very happy to see some more posts to this thread!!
Last night I tried disabling the SoundBlaster (with the Windows System Device Manager).  I disabled both the sound card and the game port.  The modem was still disconnecting.
Until now I hadn't heard of Via chipsets and SoundBlasters not getting along well with each other either.  I had, however, previously tried another sound card - it was an older Diamond Monster card I had, but I couldn't find a WinXP driver for it.  It didn't work well at all with WinXP.  So back to the SoundBlaster Live! 5.1.
I did find a cure for the other problem I mentioned.  I noticed that the SoundBlaster and all 3 USB controllers were sharing IRQ 10.  I removed the USB optical mouse and tried a PS2 ball mouse.  That solved the problem where the system was freezing after sitting idle for a while.  I sure liked the optical mouse better though.  This same problem may have been related to another one I noticed.  When playing audio CDs, sometimes the sound would stop momentarily and then go on again.  I haven't yet had a chance to see if removing the USB mouse solved that problem as well.  I have also noticed that the volume of audio CDs are controlled by the wave volume and not the CD volume.  Is this normal?  I have both the analog and digital cables connected and the CD digital setting enabled.  It's very annoying, since turning the volume up on audio CDs causes the Windows wave sounds to blast me out when they play.  I don't know how to set the SoundBlaster to use one of the other unused IRQs - can anyone tell me how to?
I haven't yet tried the PCI latency patches, because I wasn't too hopeful after seeing that it didn't work for Philipponnat.
Now for the Bios.  I have always had my Primary Graphics Adapter setting on AGP.  The onboard modem and audio settings have always been set to disabled.  I was excited to see that Philipponnat found a cure for the modem disconnections with the PCI latency setting.  When I went to my computer to do the same thing, I was disapointed to find that my Bios does not have a setting by that name, either in the PNP/PCI configuration or anywhere else.  The only thing I found that looked related was one called "PCI Delay Transaction" in the Advanced Chipset Features section, but the only settings available are enabled or disabled.  Mine was set to disabled, but I couldn't tell any difference when I set it to enabled.  Maybe we have different boards - mine is version 1, but I have flashed the Bios to the latest version I found, v1.9.
I have noticed another strange thing in the Bios.  The Bios no longer detects the power supply fan speed - it always reads zero RPM in Bios even though the lead is hooked up.  The other fans show a reading.  The power supply fan used to show a reading when I first put the computer together.
I also have S.M.A.R.T. enabled.  I have 2 identical hard drives.  They are Maxtor 80Gb 7200RPM ATA133 drives which are S.M.A.R.T. capable.  Only the primary drive (master on the primary IDE) displays S.M.A.R.T values in SpeedFan.  The other drive is set as a slave on the secondary IDE (my CD-R-RW is set as the master on the secondary IDE).
There have sure been a lot of wierd things about this motherboard.  Thank you everyone for your input so far.  Still need more help!!
John

  • Need help - wifi gets disconnected when it goes to sleep mode - iOS 6, iPhone 5, WPA Enterprise

Hi, I have read a lot of discussions regarding wifi gets disconnected when it goes to sleep mode on iOS 6, mainly on iPhone 5.
Here is my configuration and it just keeps disconnecting wifi connection once it goes to sleep mode
    iOS 6
    iPhone 5 white
    Purchased on Nov 3
    Work wifi config: WPA Enterprise
I tried to manual add the wifi but it did not work. I tried all except for upgrade to iOS 6.0.1. I had a call to Apple Support and the guy told me I could not trust everything i read from here (well, how dare he is!!!). But I did all I could think of, and read from here.
I am with ATT and I do not have a receiption at all at work. I have to turn it to airplane mode, and use the wifi connection. I put my iPhone 4 with iOS 5.0 side-by-side to compare. My iPhone with iOS 5.0 DOES NOT disconnect the wifi connection when it goes to sleep mode; but of course, we all know, iPhone 5 with iOS 6.0 does
Any helps would be so much appreaticated. I am considering to return the phone to apple store, and cancel my 2 yrs extended contract with ATT. I might think to get another one once they have the issue fixed. It is no point to have an expensive paper-weight at work while I can't use the celluare nor wifi connection.
    Thanks again,

    Hi ChrisJ4203
I have tested it at home wifi tonight. My phone and my wife's iphone (both iPhone 5 with iOS 6.0) do the same.
With cellular data on (aka airplane mode OFF) with WIFI ON
Wifi icon replaced by ATT's LTE icon once the phone was waken up from sleep mode; but within 2 secs, the wifi connection got reconnected again.
With cellular data OFF (aka airplane mode ON) with WIFI ON
WIFI icon disappeared from the top bar after both phones were waken up from sleep mode. It took a while to reconnect to the wifi network (more than 10 seconds).
On a separate note, after i rebooted my phone, i can see it does "searching" the ATT's signal, then it shows "No Service", then next second, it shows ATT with full bars and LTE icon.
My question is, i have never noticed the "No Service" showing up from my iPhone 4. The "No Service" shows up on my wife's phone too. When I first got her phone and was doing the installation, I had noticed the cell signal dropped from full bars to no service, then within few seconds, it went back up. I have not had time to test on her phone again, but it is something I will be monitoring for. I wonder if anyone has similar experience like this.
anyhow, any feedback on how to fix the wifi got disconnected while in sleep mode would be very helpful.
    thanks,

Back to setup.  I need help with the order to install drivers and software and versions.  In addition, were can I get these versions.  Emphasis on stable computer,  I don't game very much but will venture into a few flight simulators soon.
    Any help greatly appreciated
    David Thomas

    David,
The only change would be the Power Supply.  Get if you can an Antec TruePower.  You can get a True330W for around $55.00 and it is well worth it if you are going to upgrade from onboard graphics in the next week or so.
The GeForce4 Ti4200 is the best bang for the buck at them moment, and they are getting hard to find in the 64Mb 4X Version.  If you can get one for $125.00 you are doing very well and will be very happy with your computer.
    Good Luck,
    Richard

  • Arris TG862 Modem Keeps Disconnecting

Hello: I have a Comcast provided Arris TG862 modem for both voice and Internet. The modem is in bridged mode and connects to an Asus RT-AC68U wireless router via Port 1 on the Arris. I have been having issues where the modem will drop the signal and I need to power off the modem and disconnect the coaxial cable going into the modem for a few miuntes and the reconnect and repower. This seems to solve the problem for various amounts of time (1-2 days) and then I will have to go thru the routine again. Here are the readins from the Arris Status Page: Downstream

Maybe but not for me. I spent £120 on a modem so I can get faster speed as I used to have under 3MB, so don't want to just go back to have old speed.
It was stable for ages so don't know why this started to happen.
I've installed Routerstats but it don't seem to work with the Bipac 7800N as you can see by the picture it won't find the status only the firmware etc.

  • T400 modem keeps disconnecting

We have a few users that occasionally use dial-up.  The older laptops work fine (T60 and T40 series) but the T400 keeps disconnecting.  We have tried re-installing the driver but still have the issue - has anyone else seen this?  Any ideas to resolve?
    Thanks

  • Need help - imac keeps trying to restart.... can't stop it!

I restarted my mac. As i always have. There was a tick box when the restart countdown came up, i didn't see it but didn't  think anything of it. Now each time I've started the mac up it opens with safari.... And then closes the safari window and reopen safari ad infinitum.
Cannot stop. Or close down safari as only opens for about five seconds then reopen again. Mouse pointer disappears so cannot click on anything. Desperately need help. I know my computer but cannot fathom he problem. Can anyone help? Recently loaded mountain lion.... Is this the culprit?

    Hi Catfromc,
You may have to re-install mountain lion on your mac.
I can't give you much help online but you can BOOK A GENIUS APPOINTMENT

  • HT3275 I need help.  Keep getting error message he backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.

I keep recieving he following error he backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/ MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use.  for time machine backup.  Any suggestions

It is standard for Lion and Mountain Lion.
Reboot the TC to fix it.
If you actually run Lion then you can install 5.6 utility and just go to the disk page and click disconnect all users.. this is usually enough to fix it.. on the previous backup TM hasn't dismounted the sparsebundle correctly and so cannot mount it again.

  • I need help with a frequently freezing macbook pro late 2011.

The problem started about three weeks ago. Since then I have been trying to troubleshoot myself. With every page or site I go to, including mac applications, my computer freezes with a spinning wheel every 30 seconds or so. The problem began before I upgraded to mavericks. When that did not fix the problem I tried to erase and reinstall mountain lion in recovery. I was able to erase but was only given the option to reinstall mavericks, which I did. I keep seeing the same things in my console. I am not sure if I have one related problem or multiple problems. Please help.

  • Need help with video on older Mac Pro

I have a 2008 Mac Pro that more than meets all of the specs for FCP X, except the Mac App store won't let me buy and download because the video card in the system doesn't meet specs.  I've found an apple support page that lists the compatible video cards for FCP X.  Here's my issues:
    1. Most of the cards on the list are older and not easily obtainable anymore.
    2. Even with models that are newer, it's had to find one labeled for Mac - so can I just use any old model of, say, a Radeon HD 5670 or do I need one specificlaly made for Macs?
    3. Bottom line is what card can  I use in a 2008 Mac Pro that will meet the specs and that I can actually purchase?
    Thanx...Jon

A Radeon HD 5670 is a Radeon HD 5670 - if it's on the compatible list, it will work in your Mac.
This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.5 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.5.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive.
For smooth playback without dropping frames, make sure 'Better Performance' is selected in the FCP X Preferences - Playback Tab.
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:

Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
If you ever experience dropped frames, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.
    http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • Please help, Macbook keeps disconnecting me from internet

Hello, i just bought my macbook pro. Its a Mac OS X ver. 10.5.7 with a 2.26GHz processor.
    I have a Netgear 54mbps wireless router WGR614 v8 and a Motorola SB5100 SURFboard Cable modem.
Now the problem im having is with the internet connection with my mac. I live in Virginia and It was working before i went on vacation to tennessee which is an hour behind virginia. It was able to connect with no problems. It was also connecting fine in tennessee as well. But when i came back to Virginia, the mac would connect to my router or atleast say its connected but i can't use the internet at all. I would load either firefox, safari, or itunes store and the page would begin to load and then stop loading in the middle. As if it was freezing, dropping the connection or something. When i look through the airport connectivity, it would stay connected to my router with still no access to the internet. I also checked to make sure i was in the correct time zone with my mac and it was correct.I have a wii, xbox, original pc that are connected to router that operate perfectly. its just my macbook wont connect wirelessly when it used to before i went to tennesse and took it with me. Some of the error messages that i get when i try to use the internet via macbook now are "can't open page because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection" but then minutes later it would connect again, then internet would work. But shortly after it would stop working for a while. and the process continues like a cycle. PLEASE HELP BECAUSE IM CLUELESS. i've looked at many forums but no solution.

OK, I have been having the same problem. I have been renewing my dhcp every 5 min, so frustrating. I don't if this is the answer but this is the first time in a month I have been able to go for more than 3 hours without having to change anything, plus it seems faster. Instead of resetting your modem and router at the same time, unplug them both. 1st plug in your modem, allow it to fully reboot then plug in your router. Seems to have done the trick, good luck.
PS. I did clone my mac address in my router settings earlier this week.

  • Need help on purchase of a MB Pro.

I'm about to buy a MB Pro right now and I'm trying to figure which one would be the best for me. I'm going to be doing a lot of video editing on it and I'm trying to figure out what I need and don't need. For starters, I'm going with one of the two 15-inch ones. What is GT with 256mb/512mb? Is better to go with the 512 if I'm going to be doing a lot of video editing on it? And as far as processor, do I go with the 2.93Ghz instead of the 2.66? Those are really the only questions I have. I know I have to go with a 7,200 rpm hard drive. If you guys have any other helpful tips, that would be great. Thanks guys.

Yes you'll do better with 512MB of GDDR3 memory (for graphic manipulation) but you won't notice a great deal of difference between 2.4 GHZ and 2.66GHZ in the CPU speed. Selecting the 7200 rpm drive option is a good idea but what could make the biggest impact of all is to install the maximum amount of RAM you can afford. 4GB kits (2x2GB) are relatively cheap and will speed up your work. e.g.

  • Need help installing boot camp onto macbook pro

I'm attempting to get Boot Camp to run on my MacBook Pro as I need to run several programs on windows for school. I purchased a Windows 8.1 download from Microsoft's website. The download from their website is not an ISO image and is not recognized by the Boot Camp Assistant on the "Create Bootable USB Drive for Windows Installation" screen. I am not a tech savvy person and I would appreciate any help/advice, it seems that I have to somehow convert the download?
    Thank you!

You get an ISO using this method - http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-download-the-official-microsoft-windows-8-1-is o/
You will need the ISO to be able to build the USB that Bootcamp needs.

  • Need help selling a broken old Macbook Pro

Hi can anyone help me? I'm new to this forum, so I hope I'm in the right place. Also please forgive my lack of Mac techie knowledge...
I have an old macbook pro 15.5" (2008ish) that I'd like to sell. It was in perfect working condition until I tried to connect it via HDMI cable to the tv and the screen went black. I took it to the Apple Genius Bar where I was told I'd need a new graphics card (approx £800) so I decided to upgrade to a new model. It also has a brand new battery that had only just been fitted the day before it died on me. Other than the graphics card, scratches and a couple of small chips there was nothing else wrong with it.
I was unable to delete my old files before the fault occured, I'm assuming that this won't be a problem as the Apple 'Genius' was unable to retrieve any of my old files either.
So I suppose my question is, is my old MBP worth selling, would anyone be interested in buying it with a view to fixing it or using it for parts maybe? How much I should expect to get for it and where would be the best place to sell?
I would be most grateful for any advice.
    Thanks

??? If the hard drive is removed, all of your info should still be there to recover -- do NOT assume your information is no longer accessible.  With an external enclosure, my 75-yo mother could read your HD.
