Need help on purchase of a MB Pro.

I'm about to buy a MB Pro right now and I'm trying to figure which one would be the best for me. I'm going to be doing a lot of video editing on it and I'm trying to figure out what I need and don't need. For starters, I'm going with one of the two 15-inch ones. What is GT with 256mb/512mb? Is better to go with the 512 if I'm going to be doing a lot of video editing on it? And as far as processor, do I go with the 2.93Ghz instead of the 2.66? Those are really the only questions I have. I know I have to go with a 7,200 rpm hard drive. If you guys have any other helpful tips, that would be great. Thanks guys.

Yes you'll do better with 512MB of GDDR3 memory (for graphic manipulation) but you won't notice a great deal of difference between 2.4 GHZ and 2.66GHZ in the CPU speed. Selecting the 7200 rpm drive option is a good idea but what could make the biggest impact of all is to install the maximum amount of RAM you can afford. 4GB kits (2x2GB) are relatively cheap and will speed up your work. e.g.

    David Thomas

    David,
The only change would be the Power Supply.  Get if you can an Antec TruePower.  You can get a True330W for around $55.00 and it is well worth it if you are going to upgrade from onboard graphics in the next week or so.
The GeForce4 Ti4200 is the best bang for the buck at them moment, and they are getting hard to find in the 64Mb 4X Version.  If you can get one for $125.00 you are doing very well and will be very happy with your computer.
    Good Luck,
    Richard

  • Need help on purchasing a second hand Mac Pro

In the market for a new computer for Photoshop and a bit of video editing. Currently looking on Ebay etc. Before I buy, what year should I be looking for and how much should I be expecting to pay to get value for money? I'm located in Australia, Victoria.
    Thank you.

From this low end Mac article, slightly edited:

"Primate Labs has posted Geekbench results for all the Mac Pro models since 2006. Here are some of the numbers:
    2.0 GHz 4-core 2006, 3952
    2.66 GHz 4-core 2006, 5089
    2.8 GHz 4-core 2008, 5573
    3.0 GHz 4-core 2006, 5655
    2.66 GHz 4-core 2009, 8216
    2.8 GHz 8-core 2008, 8826
    3.0 GHz 8-core 2007, 8926
    2.93 GHz 4-core 2009, 8952
    3.0 GHz 8-core 2008, 9198
    3.2 GHz 8-core 2008, 9730
    3.2 GHz 4-core 2010, 9864 - preliminary (** this line adjusted closer to actual performance ** )
    2.26 GHz 8-core 2009, 11735
    3.33 Ghz 6-core 2010 14232 ** This line added **
    2.66 GHz 8-core 2009, 14268
    2.93 GHz 8-core 2009, 15043
    2.93 GHz 8-core 2010, 16025 - first report (** this line adjusted closer to actual performance ** )
    2.93 Ghz 12-core 2010, 21530 - first report (** this line adjusted closer to actual performance ** )
    http://www.primatelabs.ca/geekbench/mac-benchmarks/
If you compare geekbench scores of 2.8Ghz 8-core to 2009 2.93GHz QUAD core, their results are nearly identical. In addition, the 2009 and 2010 memories run much cooler.
When I was faced with updating my Macs to Intel, I could not bring myself to buy ones older than 2009. That is amazing because I am way too cheap to buy new in most cases.

  • Need help installing boot camp onto macbook pro

I'm attempting to get Boot Camp to run on my MacBook Pro as I need to run several programs on windows for school. I purchased a Windows 8.1 download from Microsoft's website. The download from their website is not an ISO image and is not recognized by the Boot Camp Assistant on the "Create Bootable USB Drive for Windows Installation" screen. I am not a tech savvy person and I would appreciate any help/advice, it seems that I have to somehow convert the download?
    Thank you!

You get an ISO using this method - http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-download-the-official-microsoft-windows-8-1-is o/
You will need the ISO to be able to build the USB that Bootcamp needs.

  • Need help with video on older Mac Pro

I have a 2008 Mac Pro that more than meets all of the specs for FCP X, except the Mac App store won't let me buy and download because the video card in the system doesn't meet specs.  I've found an apple support page that lists the compatible video cards for FCP X.  Here's my issues:
    1. Most of the cards on the list are older and not easily obtainable anymore.
    2. Even with models that are newer, it's had to find one labeled for Mac - so can I just use any old model of, say, a Radeon HD 5670 or do I need one specificlaly made for Macs?
    3. Bottom line is what card can  I use in a 2008 Mac Pro that will meet the specs and that I can actually purchase?
    Thanx...Jon

    . . . . . . . . . so can I just use any old model of, say, a Radeon HD 5670 or do I need one specificlaly made for Macs?
A Radeon HD 5670 is a Radeon HD 5670 - if it's on the compatible list, it will work in your Mac.
This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.5 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.5.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive.
For smooth playback without dropping frames, make sure 'Better Performance' is selected in the FCP X Preferences - Playback Tab.
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
If you ever experience dropped frames, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.
    http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • Help with purchasing new Mac Book Pro- 2014 release vs. 2013?

OK, so my 15" 2008 Mac Book Pro is on its last gasp--didn't help when I dropped it while open (I can now see into its innards though it's still working...sort of).
I'm not a technophile (mainly use my laptop for writing--my profession--and eBay business) so my sister told me to make sure that I had at least 8 GB and a fast processing speed. Retina display not necessary (her graphic artists friends hate it apparently) so that would lower the price; however it seems that there are two releases: Oct 2013 and July 2014.  Read up on the latest release but not sure how much is necessary for to have...or care about.
Can you all weigh in and tell me (a) how important it is to have "the latest and greatest" and (b) how necessary is Retina display and (c) which would YOU purchase if you had my budget constraints.  Thanks!
Anyway, I've narrowed down my choices of MacBook Pro purchases to what was within my budget: $1300 including tax.  I wanted a 15" but it was too much $$$$, plus I can just use an external monitor.
Both are available at Apple. Both come with 1 year and 3-year extended warranties and both have the standard software installed, including Pages.
One more thing....Wondering if having Flash Storage is important?  Only refurbished one (see below) has it.
Prices for both end up being almost the same--around $1250 out the door, including tax.
OPTION #1  NEW LAPTOP. July 2014 Release   NON RETINA DISPLAY
2.5GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    4GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM — 2x2GB - NOTE: I WOULD HAVE THIS UPGRADED TO 8 MG
    500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
    Accessory Kit
OPTION #2   REFURBISHED  -Oct. 14 Release - RETINA DISPLAY
13.3-inch (diagonal) Retina display; 2560-by-1600 resolution at 227 pixels per inch
    8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
    256GB Flash Storage1
    720p FaceTime HD camera
    Intel Iris Graphics

Hmm... I'm not really sure where you found a July 2014 release without a retina display. I think it might be the old version because that laptop was last updated in 2012 (to my understanding. Also, your sister is kind of wrong, if you want a computer that will work well for everyday things, 4gb of ram is just fine. I have a three year old MacBook Air with 4gb of ram and do things in Photoshop, Illustrator, Pixelmator, FCP, etc. all the time running OS X Yosemite and it runs like brand new. However, if you want to future proof it, you might want 8gb so it can always run the latest OSes.
Flash Storage is amazingly fast compared to a Hard Drive. It also has no moving parts, therefore is much more durable, and much more likely to survive a drop than a Hard Drive (which would seem to be useful in your situation).
Also, I don't know why your sister's friends would hate the Retina display. Many people love it because it gives them the ability to edit pixel by pixel with perfect accuracy.
I would go for the Retina display. It has better specs for the same price so why not? Not to mention that it's much faster and will likely receive updates much longer than the new MacBook Pro without Retina display.
    I hope I helped.

  • Need help with purchase of PC please

My husband needs to purchase a computer for a PlasmaCAM which is a metal cutting system.  He has charged me with this task since I know a little more about this stuff than he does.  Although I have no idea what some of these items mean on the requirement list.
Below is a list of requirements for the pc on the PlasmaCAM sheet that husband gave me.  What exactly do we need to buy and can I get it at any old Wal-Mart or Best Buy?
In advance--I sure appreciate the help!!  I have no idea what I am looking at here (Obviously I understand a Pentium processor to some degree and Win 7 but some of this stuff I am clueless about)
    *Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz or equivilent/faster PC
    *Windows 7
*DVD ROM drive with and 10 GB free hard disk space
*Standard bi-directional EPP or PS/2 mode (5V preferred) parallel port--dedicated strictly for controlling the PlasmaCAM cutting table.  A true physical parallel port is required (not a USB to parallel converter, for example)
*IEEE 1284 compliant parallel port cable (optimum length is 6 foot)

This is it. Computers used to come with these standard, until they were replaced by USB. Some equipment manufactuer's still use the good old parallel port, as it's extremely simple to pin-out and write basic programs for.
StarTech.com PCI Express Parallel Adapter Card
    Model: PEX1P | SKU: 9658074
This adapter card installs into a PCI Express slot allowing you to connect printers, scanners, Zip drives or memory card readers via the DB25 parallel port to most PCs.

  • Need help selling a broken old Macbook Pro

Hi can anyone help me? I'm new to this forum, so I hope I'm in the right place. Also please forgive my lack of Mac techie knowledge...
I have an old macbook pro 15.5" (2008ish) that I'd like to sell. It was in perfect working condition until I tried to connect it via HDMI cable to the tv and the screen went black. I took it to the Apple Genius Bar where I was told I'd need a new graphics card (approx £800) so I decided to upgrade to a new model. It also has a brand new battery that had only just been fitted the day before it died on me. Other than the graphics card, scratches and a couple of small chips there was nothing else wrong with it.
I was unable to delete my old files before the fault occured, I'm assuming that this won't be a problem as the Apple 'Genius' was unable to retrieve any of my old files either.
So I suppose my question is, is my old MBP worth selling, would anyone be interested in buying it with a view to fixing it or using it for parts maybe? How much I should expect to get for it and where would be the best place to sell?
I would be most grateful for any advice.
    Thanks

  • Need Help, i killed my AIR 694D-Pro Motherboard

    hello,
somedays ago i bought a server with very fine hardware.
the motherboard was a MSI 694D-Pro AIR, very fine - i got very excited. i pulled out the ati agp graphics-card and put in an asus V6800 AGP2x. Some Reboots were OK and Linux was very happy...
I powered down my computer and went out of the office, 1 hour later i came back and pushed the powerbutton .....there was coming smoke out ofthe case 8o i examined everything, and at least i screwed out the motherboard and had a look on the backside.....
There was a 'copper-line' i mean a 'path' on the board (my english is bad) which was melted! X(
i followed the line and saw i goes from the agp-powerPIN.
UPS! the connection for power was melted down, now i know why the server wont boot up. the status-leds on the motherboard are all on and ugly red.
can please somebody help me reparing my computer? i think of simply connecting a cable to the agp-powerPIN to bridge the melted 'line'
sorry for my bad english....i hope somebody could understand
thanks in advance for any help
    volker

I don't believe it can be fixed.
Check the card, it might also be burnt, and open the power supply to see if that's burnt.
Then remove the board from the case and look for extra stanoff's under the boards ( the metal pins that hold the board in place ).
The board is probably dead, but you need to be sure your not going to burn up anything else...
