PC Power & Cooling have a long reputation as being a high-end PSU manufacturer(also been doing it much longer).  If paying the extra £15.00 doesn't mean much, then go for the PC P&C. If the funds are tighter, get the Corsair.  I have the PC P&C Silencer 750.
My guess Henry, is that kmufc77 was linking to either of these Silencer 750 PC P&C PSUs

The Silencer 610 would be more than enough for the 4870, but the 750 will give greater overhead and room for upgrades to more power hungry components or Crossfire.

yes you are right i have ordered the Silencer 750 PC P&C PSUs but a black colour not red i payed the extra over the corsair 750W purely on the repitation of PC P&C PSUs. i hope i have made the right choice as i considering crossfire in the very near future

Playing aan entire level of Crysis or Crysis2 with extreme settings is a very sure way to test. A multiplayer round of BF3 at max settings is also a good test.
If you got the max stable clockrates without overvolting and temps are fine. Go on adding voltage in small steps and agin try the highest max clockrate of any voltage step. That way you'll find the total max clockrate. At some point adding voltage will have no effect anymore and that is the highest clockrate. Remember that voltage unlike just higher clockrates will increase the temps massively.
    Agreed with flobelix
Crysis 2 with ultra setting and set Vsync to Disabled is a very hard test in real life application, I don't use furmark or kombustor. To test stability first I run Vantage and 3DMark2011 then playing Crysis 2 about 2 - 3 hours every day for aweek or 2 weeks and if pass then I call it stable
I use GTX580 Lightning and at stock volt I can do 920/2200 with all little DIP switches turned ON/Enabled/Unlocked excluding Xtreme cooling LN2 DIP switch since I use normal air cooling and not LN2. If I let all DIP switches to their stock/OFF even at 900MHz I can't pass Vantage.
For safe daily OC better stay under 80c for your core temp and under 70c for your VRM & Memory temp  also do not use beyond +200mv for your core voltage (+200mv is the max value)
Note : For 24/7 I use 980/2300 with +112mv/+40mv. VRM and memory temp are under 60c and Core temp is under 80c.

  • [Help]Memory recommendation for MSI x48C Platinum

Hello MSI community, I recently bought a MSI x48c Platinum from a friend and I want to upgrade the RAM to DDR3.
    Right now I have Mushkin 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500 5-5-5-15 Blackline
Overclocked the CPU (Q6600) from 2.4Ghz (266 x9) to 3.01Ghz (333 x9) and the RAM raised to 999 then I downclocked the RAM to 832 and changed some options in Advance DRAM Configuration
    DRAM CAS# Latency - 5
    DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay - 5
    DRAM RAS# Precharge - 5
DRAM RAS# Activate to Precharge -15
    tRFC - 44
The advanced timing options are default because I don't know how to set them
    TWR - 12
    TWTR -12
    TRRD - 12
    TRTP - 12
MCH Read Delay (tRD) - [Auto]
    1N/2N Memory Timing - [Auto]
    Memory Voltage - [Auto]
    Spread Spectrum - [Disabled]
Everything else is set to [Auto]
Any help with stable settings for this RAM?
I think the RAM is not compatible with this MB and I want to buy some DDR3. I've checked the compatibility list and found some Kingston 1333 "KVR1333D3N9/2G(N9K2/4G)" but I want 1600 not 1333.
Here is a list of some DDR3 kits (I can't post external links to RAM specifications, PDF files)
    KHX1600C9D3/4G
    KHX1600C9D3B1/4G
    KHX1600C9D3P1K2/4G
    KHX1600C9D3K2/4GX
    KHX1600C9D3X2K2/4GX
    KHX1600C9D3LK2/4GX
I want to buy two kits 2x2GB + 2x2GB. Which one is better and supported by this motherboard? Please help me, thanks!

I read your post. Just wanted to emphasis again what was officially tested. The X48C never was a stellar platform to begin with combining DDR2 and DDR3 technologies. What works on one system may not work on another. You want 1600 RAM, then buy it and try it. OC'ing is never guaranteed. 2 kits of 2GB? Suggest they be from the same production batch as even with the same part number, they may have different brand chips on them. If 8GB of RAM is desired, then a 2X4GB kit may be the better choice.
I read some threads and many people said that 2x4GB kits don't work with x48c ... I checked the x48c Platinum specifications page and the RAM supported is DDR3 800/1066/1333/1600... My CPU is 1066 FSB default but I will overclock it to get 1333 FSB.
Ok then, I will buy the RAM specified in the supported list (KVR1333D3N9K2/4G) but I want to buy two kits, 2x2GB + 2x2GB, is it safe?

  • Need backplate for MSI X48C Platinum

Hi! I recently acquired an MSI X48C Platinum motherboard but I need a rear I/O shield for it. I found some on eBay but they want $20 for them!! Can anyone here or at MSI help me out by chance? Thanks!

This is an EOL product thus the only few possible ways to find the I/O shield is from those IT accessories shops or like where you find it, ebay.

    hello,
I have big problem with my compie.
At firtst when I boot up my compie this morning, system can boot up but when I play games just 1 minute, the system freeze. So, I suspect vga card/prosesor is wrong, then I clean their heatsink n change pasta in my proccesor. After finished, I boot. The system cannot post, it restarted over n over .
So, I check the system again, until I take out one of my memory, there is a beep error, then i shutdown again, i reseated memory n again check another pheriperial. But after finished when I press power button, system cannot power on again, the fan is dead, n there is no respon at all . :(
I already checking again n again, even i change pasta prosesor again, but the compie is still dead silent.
Is there anyone can give any clue whats going on?
    My speks :

Psu : Thermaltake Pure Power 420w (i've already check it, n still work fine)
    Thx Before

    Hi
I have similar problem with my X48C and have taken me 6 months to stablelise the dame thing. this is the worst documented and manufactured board i ever come across.
To enable this board to function properly. you need to update the bios to at lease V7.3      I was using the raid features for my 2x1T Samsung HD. Boy it sucks! i have to disable the raid reature and forever forget using it. It bring more pain than joy in using it. i use a back up utility is much better than using the raid feature. it is more efficient and appears to work faster without the raid feature turned on.
    use SATA IDE mode.
Next the motherboard is so under Voltage that it create the random freeze in game mode. Thank to the various forum and i finally figure out why this stupid board freezes. Why? because it is an under voltage board. you must be on OverClock (OC) mode all the time. you need to manually set the CPU Voltage, Ram voltage and MCH voltages. When you are on OC mode you have to disable some of the neat features which are some of the feature of the Motherboard.
You can leave most of the Bios setting to default. Except the {Cell Menu} option. This is the menu for to specify settings on Frequency/voltage and overclocking.( Well i am not trying to OC but I have to set this manually to achieve stability)
Disable the Intel EIST mode. (Enhance intel Speedstep technology)
Disable DOT Control (You can change this after you achieve system stability)
you may want to refer to the menu when you setting up this.
you can set your memory timing. at this stage i will leave it at default until you achieve system stability first.
To set them refer to your memory manufacturer data sheet.
On the voltage side. set CPU voltage to 1.5++V which is less than the Red option
set ram volatge to 1.79V ( i am using Corsiar 1600 2GBx2 which need at lease 1.8V) 1.79 is close
                                                                    enough.
This setting works for Kingston ram KVR1333 series
                                Set FSB Voltage to Auto
                                Set NB Voltage to 1.6++V
                                Set SB Voltage to 1.5++V
                                 leave the rest at AUTO
Disable the Spread Spectum      (if you enable this it will create random freez in your normal operation (but less often.)
    i am using Intel E8500
and Sapphire ATI 4870 1GB DDR5 for my video card.

  • Problem Boot MSI X48C Platinum

    Good evening,
Sorry for my not perfect english. I have a big problem, please help me .
I have assembled my new pc with these components:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
    Ram: Corsair XMS3 2x2GB kit PC3-10666 1333Mhz DD3
    MotherBoard: MSI X48C Platinum
    Video Card: Gainward HD4870X2 2Gb DDR5
    HD: 2x500gb Seagate barracuda 7200
    Music Card: Creative Audigy2
Power Supplie: Cooler Master 700w Silent Pro
When i try to power on my pc, it reboot in few second (4-5 seconds) again and again since the first time.
What can i do? Please help me....

Your Bios is to old for a E0 stepping CPU.
For a E8500 stepping E0, you need Bios 7.2 or higher.
For a E8500 stepping C0, you need Bios 7.0 or higher.
I think you have stepping E0.
    What can you do:
    1. Flash the Bios with a CPU supportet from Bios 7.1
    2. Let flash the bios from a local computer dealer
Here you can check the bios version you need:

  • Memory on Msi x48c platinum

So far i must say "Worst motherboard ever" !
I had problem with my cpu E8500 due to bios update and now even memory also.
I have this computer all new parts
    Msi x48c Platinum
    Radeon 4870 1 gb ram
    Intel core 2 duo 3.16 E8500
    Samsung f1 Hdd 1 TB
    Corsair 2 x 1 gb ram 1600 mhz DDR3
    Chill 700w psu
    Windows xp pro
When i switch my memory to something above 1067 mhz then windows freeze right after the welcome screen.
What is wrong here..because i am sure this motherbord promised 1600 mhz suport ddr 3

    Okay, about your memory:
    http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/TW3X2G1600C9DHX.pdf
    These are the "true"/non-overclocked specifications:
    Quote
    SPD programmed at:
 JEDEC standard 9-9-9-24 values at
    1333MHz
...and these are the overclocking specifications:
    Quote
Tested together at 1600MHz, Vdimm =
1.80V, at latency settings of 9-9-9-24
Also note, that Corsair does not mention any test condition for stably overclocking and overvolting the memory modules from DDR3-1333 to DDR3-1600 @1.8V.  Instead it says this at the bottom:
    Quote
Every part is tested in Corsair's factory at 1600MHz, but your actual results may vary depending on the overclocking margin of your CPU and motherboard.
Corsair does not (cannot) promise you that you will be able to reach the clock speeds that were tested in the laboratory.  You should keep that in mind at all times before you proceed.  Also, note that these memory modules are not on the MSI Test List for this mainboard:
    http://global.msi.eu/uploads/test_report/TR10_1393.pdf
Now, as you have already found out yourself, you need to raise FSB Clock Speed in order to reach memory clock speeds higher than 666 MHz (DDR3-1333) as the highest possible FSB/DRAM Ratio is 1:2.  That means in theory , the FSB Clock has to be raised to 400 MHz in order to enforce DDR3-1600 on the memory clock using the 1:2 ratio.  I am not saying that this is a totally impossible thing to do, but it is definately not an easy one.
What you should not do, is to try to overclock FSB/CPU & memory at the same time.  Rather, you should lower the memory clock speed (for now!).  The best thing is to get the system stable @400 MHz FSB Clock Speed and worry about overclocking the memory modules later.
In order to do that, please set your FSB/DRAM Ratio to 1:1.2 in BIOS, disable Spread Spectrum, lower the memory voltage to 1.6V and then raise the FSB Clock Speed in small steps.  Test stability after each step and see if you can get the system stable 400 MHz FSB Clock Speed without changing anything else (for now).
With FSB/DRAM Ratio set to 1:1.2, your memory will operate @DDR3-960 MHz and should not be a critical factor in system stability.  Once your system is stable @400 MHz FSB, you can start to overclock the memory (knowing that FSB & CPU themselves are fine with the overclock).  Then you can concentrate on the memory only and see how far you can get.
[I am moving this thread to the Overclocking Corner for further discussion.]

  • MSI x48c platinum - does not detect SATA HDDs

I am having some problems with a pc build with motherboard not detecting SATA HDDs (MIS x48c Platinum).
I believe I have exhausted all other avenues, and I would appreciate some help if I have missed something obvious.
(details of other components are listed at end of mail).
When I built pc using these components, and went into BIOS settings, the SATA HDD's were not detected.  I tried changing BIOS settings, but no difference if SATA, AHCI, or IDE settings.
I removed the HDDs and successfully tested them in another machine (also formatted them while had them istalled in other pc).
IDE optial drives are detected.  I have tried to boot with these disconnected to ensure no isues with both IDE and SATA drives connected, but this did not resolve issues.
I have also tried connecting HDD to different onboard SATA ports, and connecting just one drive with no success.
Resetting BIOS defaults, and using clear CMOS reset did not resolve issues either.
Sometimes on boot, it takes a few attempts to boot correctly, and on these occassions I receive an error message "Warning !!! The previous performance of overclocking is failed, and the system is restored to the default settings, Press any key except "DEL" to enter setup ......."  I haven't tried to set any over clocking.
I read about a number of issues on MSI forum related to SATA drives which were resolved by BIOS upgrade (mobo was shipped with v.7.0 released 20 March 08).  I managed to install an old IDE HDD and flash BIOS, but still no resolution of issues detecting SATA drives (BIOS V.7.2 released 29 July 08).
I've tried everything I can think of at this stage.  Is there anything else I should try, or is there something wrong with this motherboard?
    Spec:
    Motherboard:
    343949 MSI X48C Platinum, X48, Socket-775,
    DDR2/DDR3, ATX, GbLAN, 2xPCI-Ex(2.0)x1
    Other components in build:
CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
Graphics Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 512MB
    HDD 2 x Samsung SpinPoint T166 500GB
    RAM 4GB (2x2GB) GeIL DDR3 1333MHz Value Dual Channel (7-7-7-24) PC3-10660
PSU 700W X-Power ATX SLI PSU
ODD DVD & CDR drives from an old pc - IDE connections.

i just remember     i had once similar problem with a sata driver. the issue is this you can not adjust everything in bios in one go and expect mobo to know about it. what i mean is this for instance you disable the raid then you save it and exit and then when it reboot you go back to bios and reset another another parameter,  you save and exit and on reboot you go back to bios and reset another parameter. i got round the prob that way and it worked and mobo saw the sata HDD. give this a shoot good luck and finally make sure raid is disabled
this is what i would do
1- make sure the jumper setting on your IDE Hdd is correct (Y may have to try this twice as there are two different setting on jumper setting for Master)
    2- connect the sata HDD
    3-click on power
4-go to bios and disable raid save exit
5-on reboot go back to bios
6--on first option click on it then you should see all devices that can be seen by mobo if you do not see sata HDD you have to click on enable for the auto to see the device once it sees the device save and exit. REMEMBER THE JUMPER SETTING  ON IDE HDD CAN CAUSE PROB . SO try the other jumper setting for master, repeat this procedure once more hopefully you get it right

  • MSI X48C Platinum a motherboard with many issues

    MSI X48C Platinum Ver 3.0 BIOS 7.2
I bought this motherboard for 15 days and I found many serious problems. I think than this motherboard is completely manufactured defective.
I had to return it to RMA of MSI, on the advice of technical service of MSI.
Three issues detected in this days of testing this motherboard:
    - Half speed issue in CPU Clock, FSB and Memory. All these buses are working at half speed with FSB 1333 processors. This bug is random and not detected by the BIOS.
    - Memory problems. I have tried with 6 different new modules of Kingston Memory compatible with this motherboard (included in the list of compatible memories). Many of these modules were problems in memtest86 and showed blue screen in Windows Vista and strange reboots in XP, but the modules were not damaged.
    - SATA RAID + Optical SATA + Optical IDE issue. When I connect an optical SATA RW-DVD and an optical IDE R-DVD and RAID is enabled, the operating system does not boot. The only solution is "Disable IDE" or remove SATA optical.
There are too many errors for a motherboard that has been time for sale and that has left three BIOS. Is an expensive moltherboard with a high-performance chipset.
I do not understand as MSI has put up for sale this product without simple tests. I lost a lot of my time and money.
What X48C sent to those who made the reviews of this motherboard?

Do you have a question regarding problems?
If no, please go somewhere else to vent your anger.
As stated, there are NO MSI employees here and this is a forum about problem solving, not for ranting and flaming
If you want help regarding issues, no problem, go ahead and ask questions.
Got a bad feelin towards MSI, though, but we cant help it either.
What do you want us to do  ??? ?
Anyway I hope you'll get a better board and wish you all the best, but dont start about bad service and all that, we dont work for MSI.

  • MSI x48c PLatinum and Intel E8600 Problem

    Hello, I'm from Greece
    My computer Setup is:
Mobo: MSI X48C Platinum (bios version 7.0)
CPU: INTEL CORE 2 DUO E8600
    PSU: HEROLCHI 525 Watt
    RAM: OCZ OCZ3SOE10664GK DDR3 4GB (2x2GB)
    VGA: Albatron 8800 GTS
    HDD: WD 300GB SATA
    The problem is:
I bought them yesterday because i want to upgrade my system.
I connect them all properly in my case and after i turn the PC on it freeze in the MSI logo screen and cant even enter BIOS Setup.
The first time i turned the power on a message like: "Your previous overclockinn atempt was not succssefull. Press a button except del to load defaults and continue." i do what it said and freeze after that message.
This just the first time, the other times it just freeze on the logo screen. Some times it beeps one time and reset by his own and sometimes beeps four times and then reset. The most of the times it just freezes in the logo screen.
I took everything off and reinstall them. Nothing Happen.
I tried with one dimm of RAM each time in deferent positions. Nothing Happen.
I did o clear CMOS from the back button. Nothing Happen.
I perform a clear CMOS with the old method (unplug power, remove battery, wait for a couple o minutes). Nothing Happens.
I believe the problem is with the bios version i have and the CPU compatibility. I look at www.msi.com.tw and it said that this board its compatible with the INTEL E8600 but only at the 7.2 version.
How will i update my bios if my computer doesnt even enter bios setup?
Please help me. any suggestion. I'm losing my mind here!
    Thanks you in advance.

the only thing i can suggest is to drop in a 7.0 compatible CPU (if you can) and flash the BIOS to 7.2 that way then switch back in your new CPU.  A painful process, I know ...  Alternatively, if your retailer is friendly they might set it up on a test bench for you and flash it.

Like Andrew mentioned, this is the only way out though it is a long painful process.
The other is to get a board that is compatible to the E8600 right out of the box.

  • Random Crashes with MSI x48c Platinum

    Hello everyone.
After crabbing some new hardware and putting it together, Im having trouble with these annoying random crashes. It does not happen often however, maybe a few times in a day. The screen turns black and the sound just loops forever. Then I have to restart it manually. Sometimes it will boot right up again, but other times I have to restart twice, because I dont even get the POST screen up, the screen just stays black.
    Motherboard: MSI x48c Platinum
    Graphic Card: Asus EAH4870
    RAM: OCZ DDR3 4 GB Platinum XTC DualChannel (PC3-12800 2x2048MB 1600MHz.)
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz 1333Mhz
    PSU: Corsair CMPSU-750TXEU 750W
    OS: Windows Vista x64 Ultimate
I have a clean installation of Vista x64 and all the drivers are updated.
No overclocking, everything is running on default (Except I adjusted the graphic card fan, because it was hitting over 80 freaking Celsius when idling..!)
The temp for the CPU is 35-50c, and with the fan fix for my graphic card, its running on 50c. So overheating shouldnt be a problem.
Im really out of ideas here.. However, it does not say that my RAM is compedable with the motherboard in the manual, but doesnt that just mean its not tested with it? I think a new card like x48c should be able to run it just fine..
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advice.

Still having the same problem, but it seems to happen more frequently now though.
I set the following options in BIOS to:
    Clock speed: 1066 MHz
    Voltage: 1.57V
    CAS# Latency(CL): 9
    RAS# to CAS# Delay (tRCD): 9
    RAS# Precharge (tRP): 9
    RAS# Activate to Precharge: 24
    It was something like, 7 7 7 38..
    Is these the right settings?
When I run CPUZ again after the changes, its still saying 7 7 7 20.. Also went into the BIOS again, and the settings were set to 9 9 9 24, am I missing out on something here?
Here is a screenshot of what the menu looks like; http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/mainboards/msi-x48-platinum/timings.jpg (Not my screen)
I also had to disable STD to get those menu-options.
So I tried to flash my BIOS instead, but the problem still remains. I used BIOS version 2.4, located here: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1392 (I used the forum tool btw, works great, thanks alot for that!)
Also tried to reset the CMOS, run default bios settings...
By the way, since I'm using DDR3 ram I had to use slot 1, and 3. Because the motherboard supports DDR2 as well.
(Sorry for bringing this old topic up, but its getting really annoying now)

  • MSI X48C Platinum - OC & Voltages

Hi, I have a MSI X48C Platinum motherboard. Also I have Intel Core2 Duo E8200 CPU. On my old Asus P5K-E WiFi AP  I had stable 4GHz. But now i have some problems, it's my first product from MSI.
    Are these settings good?
CPU Voltage - 1.2875V (it's good, my CPU can do [email protected]
Memory Voltage - 2.1V (it's good, I have new OCZ Platinum [email protected] 2x2GB)
FSB Termination Voltage - 1.25V (Somebody told me it's to high. Is it true or false? What are the highest and safe settings?)
NB Voltage - 1.58V (it's good, I have same problem on higher NB Voltage)
    SB Voltage - 1.53V ---------||---------
    CPU GTL Reference Voltage 1 - 0.7625 (1.25V x 0.61)
CPU GTL Reference Voltage 2 - Auto (What should I set?"
MCH GTL Reference Voltage - ?
DDR CHA Reference Voltage - ?
DDR CHB Reference Voltage -  ?
MCH DDR Reference Voltage - ?
I don't know, what are 4 last Voltages. Can anybody tell me something about it? What should I set there?

    Hi..
Vcore to high or not? My cpu wont start, under 1,41V @4,29 Ghz.
But for testing i would set the Vcore value between 1,0 -1,2.
Your Memory Voltage , I think thats right, if you have problems, perhaps a little bit higher.
Your NB Voltage is to high. MSI say: for stability work at the bus, you can take 1,42V.
Sb PLL Volltage. fix it at 1,50V..
Your FSB Terminator Voltage, now from some overclocking forum, i know, this value ought to be not higher than your Vcore.
I work so, and I have no problems till jet.
The last Voltages, is a theme thats not be  manifested in a few minutes.
If you set a wrong value, your system wont boot!! Read this!
