Need help please!!!!!!! cant boot into hard drive

hi every one!!
i´m a new macbook user. it was working great, but i wanned to boot an ubuntu live cd. i tried presing "c" at startup and it didint work. so i went into macosx an changed the boot option from hard drive to cd. i restated the macbook with the ubuntu cd and it worked. i just wanned to see how it runned linux, i didint move with linux anything from the hard drive. i restarted, ejected the ubuntu cd and now the macbook gives me a grey screen. i tried presing "x","h","shift","option" and nothing hapens. i can hear the sound when i turn on the power, but i cant see the grey apple and the loading spinning wheel. after a few seconds a message apears "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". i didint move anithing else from the macos x 10.4 just that option. i also didint install anything from linux(just a live cd).dont have any macos cd.
how can i get back into macos x 10.4????????
please help!!!

i would suggest HOLDING the option key down before pressing the power button. you shouldn't need the install disks to do that. also, i would suggest reading the manual at apple.com before trying anything else with the boot order

Hello! Help please! Best external hard drive preferably 1TB for macbook pro 2011. thank you!!!

You can pickup any 1TB USB powered drive for about $100 at just about any local office supply store.
It comes formatted FAT32 (MSDOS) for reading by OS X and Windows PC's.
However if your files sizes are going to be larger than 4GB in size (like video tends to be) then your going to need to select the drive in OS X's Disk utility (in the Applicaitons > Utilities folder) and format the drive exFAT instead.
exFAT is a drive format that 10.6.5 and later Mac's, Windows Vista and 7 machines can read just fine. XP machines need a free exFAT drive install from Microsoft.
Do backup the 1TB to another 1TB drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or another backkup utility because 1TB is a lot of data to lose on a $100 drive.
I don't advise the "port powered" USB drive as these tend to have power issues and with 1TB of data on it, very risky. Use a powered drive if you can all help it.

  • Need help in installing a SATA hard drive with 865pe NEO2

    Hello there
I need a help in installing a Sata hard drive ,it is WD 250 GB , my motherboard is 865PE Noe2 , the bios is the latest one
already I got another old hard drive ,not a Sata ,a regular IDE one installed as a master hard drive
I want to install the sata hd as a slave for the IDE hd for now to transfer the files and documents
I already physically installed the Sata hard drive yet the problem is that it was listed in the bios , I followed some of the steps here in the forum mentioned but all what I got is I found it listed as the fourth IDE master , not as the primary IDE slave
in Windows Xp Sp2 it is not listed of course in the windows explorer , but it is there in the device manager
look I am very confused and I tried most of the combinations in the ide configuration in BIOS
what should I do coz I am feeling so bad and stupid  ,you can consider me a n00b in this hard drive thing

1st the sata drive cannot be listed as a slave drive to the ide master [key word=ide-can be configured as master OR slave, master IF only 1 hd, master and slave IF 2 hds], on the sata controler you can have master and slave, the ide cable has two connectors for the hds, sata has only 1 hd connector.
are you wanting to install the sata as primary master and move the operating sys to that drive, if so you will need an IMAGING software to move an operating system OR you could do a fresh operating system install to the sata drive then install your programs.

  • Need help! White screen and hard drive

I have a MacBook Pro A1211 I got off Craigslist. It needed a new logic board and hard drive so I got both. My problem is I just found out the hard drive has windows on it and when I power on the MBP all I get is a white screen.  My question is is there a way to get windows off that hard drive while its installed in the MBP? I've tried every command I could find online to push when I power on the MacBook but it does nothing. I bought a copy of snow leopard 10.6 factory sealed and put it in the super drive but it just spins for a while and then stops. The fans constantly run also but I'm new to MacBook so I don't know if that's suppose to happen. I got the disk management to come up one by holding down option and power on but it didn't give me the option of choosing the SuperDrive and I can't get it back up. It's almost like the keyboard isn't working. If there's any suggestions y'all can give me I'd appreciate it.

  • Need help please! boot camp related

Im in desperate need of help.
    Heres the story:
I partioned my drive to 100 gb windows (xp home), with about 131 gb for Leopard.
I followed the prompts during the installation, until i got to the screen listing the available drives for installing windows. The only drive that came up was the 131 gb one, which was the Leopard-dedicated section with all of my data on it.
I restarted the computer several times to no avail. I still just had the 131gb option come up. I did click on the 131 gb drive option (out of desperation i guess) but when prompter to install, i quit the application.
After restarting the laptop several more times and trying again, i took out the xp cd having given up on the whole thing. Upon doing so, a blank white screen came up, which after about 10 seconds turned into a dark screen with a white flashing line at the top left hand corner.I tried restarting and waiting but nothing worked.
Ive browsed some other forums and found out that by holding the 'opyion' key at start up you can switch between drives. When i tried this, it only gave me one drive to choose from, which was labelled 'windows'. I clicked on it and got the same white then dark with flashing line screens.
In serious need of help, if ive lost all of the data on that leopard drive im royally screwed.
Hopefully that was comprehendable, any help will be appreciated greatly.

I had exactly the same problem a few weeks ago (with a XP Pro SP2), and as you did, and being as desperate as you were, I also clicked on the 131 drive option. The result was : start-up drivers were broken, so the machine had to go back to Apple care center and I got it back three weeks later. All my data were lost, they even had to change the hard drive. Strange thing was I didn't have to pay anything for that (whereas I did recognize that this was my fault for I selected a wrong partition). So I guess Apple is now experiencing some problems with Bootcamp… Anyway you shall never select any other partition as the one wich is named "Bootcamp". Otherwise you can overwrite all your OS X soft and this can be some sort of nightmare. Sorry. When I got back my iMac I tried again (with 70 GO for Windows that time) and the same things happened ; but this time as I saw only one partition I just quit the whole thing (F3 key) and got back to OS X, and re-opened Bootcamp to get back to a single Mac OS partition. No problem… but no Windows. I think we'd better wait for further info from Apple. Perhaps we can also try with 32 Go partition and FAT format and see what happens then (I think I will try this). Or buy a Vista and see what happens (NTFS format required but automatic, so it seems to be easier).
Did you try to install XP or Vista ?
    Good luck
    Regards.
And have a look on this forum, unless you already did it :

  • Mac Mini Help Please!!! - Hard Drive and Time Machine

    Hello everyone,
I return once more seeking your support if I may...
I went down to the Genius Bar today, as my Mac Mini was having the multi-colour circle not-responding icon showing an awful lot, and it was struggling to perform simple tasks.
I bought my mac mini 2 years ago (12-Mar-11), and I was told there was an I/O error; and i needed a new hard drive.
I am currently backing up my machine, onto a WD My Passport 500gb.
When a new hard drive is installed by Apple, can I restore my files with my 'My Passport' backup?
I do also store other items on 'My Passport'; does this make a difference when trying to restore my files to my new hard drive?
One more question if I may...
Has anyone here had a new hard drive installed by Apple before, and if so, has the hard drive 'stood the test of time'
Many thanks in advance for your help
    James

What utility are you using to backup your drive?
Apple buys hard drives from major manufacturers like Toshiba, Samsung, Seagate, and Western Digital. The drives will last as long as any drive you would purchase from them. Some last long and some don't.
Suffice to say the drives carry a specific warranty. That should give you an idea how long the manufacturer thinks it will last on average.
You can restore files from your backup pretty easily in Mountain Lion. If you are using Time Machine then you can actually boot from a Recovery HD image that it places on your backup drive. To boot from it you must connect the backup drive, then restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the Recovery HD and then click on arrow button beneath the icon.

  • Need help - downloading photos to portable hard drive

I've imported about 2000 photos from my iPhone to my Macbook Air.  I want to export them now to a portable hard drive but it's saying I don't have enough memory.  I was planning on deleting the photos on the MacAir afterwards anyway.
    Two questions:
1.) How do I move these photos to my portable hard drive, so I can then delete them on the hard drive?
2.) How do I bypass downloading to the MacAir next time, and move photos right from iPhone to portable hard drive?
I'm tech savvy on all things Windows, and have had Macs in the past, so I'm ready to pull my hair out over these novice questions.
    Help!

Have your recipients given you any more info than you've given us? The simplest thing for you to do is to capture your footage, get it in a timeline, then export as a QuickTime movie, which should be around 9 or 10 GB in size. Your PC friend would need to download QuickTime in order to view it.
There are tools available to convert to Windows Media or other formats. One of the best is MPEG Streamclip, which you can download here:
    http://www.squared5.com/
You'll need to be certain to format the hard drives properly (do this in Disk Utility): Mac OS Extended for your Mac friend, MS-DOS for your PC friend. There are issues with some PC drives and files over 2GB, so you may need to break your QuickTime movie into 9-minute segments.

  • Need help with homemade usb external hard drive

I got a usb external hard drive kit that you can put any hard drive into, and I have a 20gig western digital disk. I cant seem to get it to work on my gateway(333 mhz celeron) with windows 2000, but I am going to order a imac in 6 days. Do you think that the external hard drive would work on a newer computer like an imac? Also What jumper settings would I have to put it on? The current choices are "slave", "single or master", and "master with slave present". There are also 3 jumper settings that could be possible, but it is not labeled on the hard drive.
    thanks!

Rob, check the instructions that should have come with your drive kit, or check the manufacturer's website. Normally an IDE drive would be jumpered as 'master' or 'cable select' if it's used in a drive kit. BTW, that setting remains totally inside the drive housing, it is not visible or meaningful to the computer via the USB connection.
Whether or not your kit will work with a new iMac is hard to tell, esp. since you haven't been able to get it working so far. Have you checked to make sure whether or not you need to install a USB driver for your drive kit on your Gateway machine? (Win98 always requires USB drivers, WinXP rarely does, and I'm not sure about Win2K). For what it's worth, MACs rarely require special USB drivers.

  • Help Please: Big Bang-XPower: hard drive not found while installing Windows7 x64

I bought an MSI Big Bang-XPower MB and was trying to install windows7 x64. I have a WD raptor 150GB and Samsung 1TB hard drives. Both drives show up in BIOS. SATA controller setting is in IDE.
after I clicked at the "install" icon, a window showed up telling me that no hard drive was found. I have seen this problem before with my old MB. All I needed to do with that MB was to load a driver for the hard drive and problem solved. Does anyone know which driver (name and version, please) is the right one for this MB? I went to the MSI driver page and there are several of them. and some of them give me about 50 drives to choose from (I tried about 10 of them but neither worked).
Also, is IDE or AHCI more appropriate for this MB with Windows7?
    Thanks for any help.

i downloaded and unzipped the file to a USB drive. it instructed me to press F6 to load the driver, but i couldn't find this screen while I was installing windows7. at about what step does this normally show up. i can see this if i were installing xp or vista.
anyway, when i click at the load driver with the IDE setting, nothing was found. There was a driver when i changed sata setting to ACHI, but the computer told me that was not a valid driver.
does the drive package have to be loaded in a floppy disc?
anyway, called tech support and was told that the xpower was one of their newest MB. and the tech rep told me that he had never heard of this problem before. he had no idea what he was talking about. Fail! lol

  • I need help to repair my external hard drive

    (1) My External Hard Drive finally stopped  working. Whenever I tried to use it, I would only get variants of, "Time Machine couldn't complete the Backup to "My Passport for Mac", or "The backup disc is not available".
    (2) "No problem," I thought. "There is no problem with my computer, so I'll just buy another external hard drive," and I did.
    (3) About this time, I partitioned my computer hard drive to enable me to run both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion. I did this with step-by-step instructions by Apple technicians.
    (4) I now find that I have lost a considerable number of files, including those that I value most highly.
    (5) I now find that I need the files in my old, abandoned external hard drive, and it seems to me that the easiest way to access those files is simply to repair it.
(Here's what I've tried so far: (1) Disc Utility Repair. Didn't help. (2) COMMAND-R start. This produced a window with the following entries: Restore from Time Machine Backup, Reinstall OSX, Get Help online, Disk Utility. It seemed to offer hope, but I couldn't highlight any of them, and the "continue" command was dimned out. Where do I go from here? Data recovery is the solution usually offered, and I've alwys wondered why. It seems to me that fixing the external hard drive should always be the first thing to be considered. Data recovery is expensive, and fixing the external hard drive might be cheap.

  • New mac user, need help transferring music from external hard drive

I am new to using a mac. I have had an iphone for almost a year so I am catching on quickly to my macbook but this problem has stumped me and all my mac using friends.
I have a 500gb seagate external hard drive aswell as a new 500gb seagate internal.
I transferred all my music from an old ipod onto the external hard drive. There is about 50gb of music.
When I plug my external into my pc desktop I can see the music folder organized into subfolders with files inside that are encoded unless they are opened in itunes. My pc doesn't have enough internal memory to open and store my music library so I have just left it on the hard drive. When I plug the hard drive into my macbook it will show the music folder as having 50gb but when the folder is opened, none of the subfolders or files are visable.
I went ahead and dragged the folder from my harddrive onto my desktop. It took about an hour to transfer all the files but now the folder is sitting on my desktop and when I open it, it is empty. If i look in the folders info, it says it has the 50gb. If i try to drag and drop it into itunes nothing happens. If I drag and drop it into the itunes music folder, it will go there but will not show up on itunes.
I'm stumped and no longer eligable for apples telephone support as I bought this macbook from a friend. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have a couple of theories, but I'm not an iTunes expert. These people are, though:

    In Disk Utility
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your external volume.
    6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully it'll partition.
Since thats shot was taken a Partiton was made which im not sure if it was fully made called Untitled 1, it wont mount and I'm in hour 4 of it verifying and repairing. how long should Checking HFS Plus volume take?

  • Need help using iPod as external hard drive

Hi. Will soon be receiving a new iMac to replace my old Dell PC and had a question about how to get all of the contents of the Dell hard drive onto my new iMac using my 60GB iPod. I am a complete computer novice.
    1. How do I do it?
    2. The iPod is currently formatted for my Dell PC. Once I have transferred all of my files (including music) over to the iMac, do I need to reformat the iPod? How do I do this?
    3. Will all my playlists in iTunes be saved when I do the transfer?
Any advice or direction to links would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

"how to get all of the contents of the Dell hard drive onto my new iMac using my 60GB iPod"
If everything you've got will fit then enable your iPod for disk use and drag what you want onto it, or do it a bit at a time: Using your iPod as a hard disk
There is a good general guide to switching from Windows to Mac at the following link that touches on moving music as well How to Move to a Mac - Get your stuff from your PC to your new Mac
"1. How do I do it?"
Have a look at this guide specifically on moving iTunes: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
"2. The iPod is currently formatted for my Dell PC. Once I have transferred all of my files (including music) over to the iMac, do I need to reformat the iPod? How do I do this?"
If you don't intend using your iPod on Windows again the you can reformat it by restoring it on the Mac: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings
"3. Will all my playlists in iTunes be saved when I do the transfer?"
If you follow the instructions in the guide you should have your whole library just as it was.
