Need help repairing bootable external drive permissions

I, like some of the other posters I have read, have messed up the permissions on a bootable external drive.
I don't have direct access to my home computer right now so I set up an external bootable copy of my personal account, so I can basically run a copy of my own personal computer from anyone elses mac. And when I get back home I will be able to copy back across any new files.
The set up was working great till I realized that my external drive was completely readable, and writeable by anyone who turned it on as a peripheral disk while logged in on the main computer if the computer was booted up on it's own startup disk.
If my external was set as the startup disk, then my password and account kept everything secure.
So anyway, not really knowing what I was doing I, using the show info command, changed the group permission for the whole disk/volume from admin to my username. Now unfortunately I cannot startup using my external disk; the whole system goes straight to Kernal. And all my files are still totally assesible to any one logged in on the computer using its own start up disk.
Can you help me with the commands, to first repair the group permission so my disk is bootable again, then second so that I can prevent anyone with out my password access to any files on the disk?
Thanks alot!

Can you help me with the commands, to first repair the group permission so my disk is bootable again, then second so that I can prevent anyone with out my password access to any files on the disk?
On another machine, open the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, select your drive in the list of disks, and then click on the Repair Permissions button; other solutions are available if this doesn't work.
Your two goals are mutually exclusive; there is no way to restrict access to an entire disk to yourself while maintaining the ability of that disk to boot Mac OS X. Your home folder can be protected in this way by changing the permissions on the item inside /Users/ with the house icon, or by turning on FileVault in the Security pane of System Preferences.

I have been up all night trying to figure out how to help myself - with no success. I posted a question earlier (see above) but didn't give it a useful title, so I'm trying again in hopes of attracting more readers and some tips. The details of my dilemma are explained in detail at the above http address.

    Hi sauble
OK you set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but it sounds like you have not set the Partition Map Scheme to *GUID Partition Table* using the Partition Tab in Disk Utility when you Formatted the External HD.

Note the Info from System Profiler for one of my Maxtor External HD's, it has two Partitions (Snow Leopard Clone and Tunes/Photos). But in order for one to Install or Clone the OS X onto it for booting, the Partition Map Type (scheme) must first be set to *GUID Partition Table.* <<<<<<----

  • Need help restoring from external drive

First off, let me say that I am a computer moron.
Three months ago, my MacBookPro (purchased Nov 06) began blinking a folder with a question mark. I went to the Genius Bar and they fixed it using Disk Warrior. They suggested I get an external hard drive and upgrade to OS X. So I did.
Yesterday, I got the blinking folder with question mark again. Went to Genius Bar, they said Disk Warrior would now cost $100 and there was no guarantee that I would recover anything. This time they gave me a new hard drive. I told them that I would use my external hard drive to put pics, music and files back on. My new hard drive was not installed until the store closed so they handed me my computer and sent me on my way.
I thought that putting my pics and music back on would be easy...not so much. Any suggestions on what I should do?
    Thanks!

Is the version of iPhoto a complete iLife vesrion different? E.g. - is the reinstalled version the one that came with the mac and you then bought iLife 08 and were running that?
In a pinch you can get at the original in the iPhoto library under "originals" and reimport them - I know you lose albums and the like but they are accessible without iPhoto. They are ordered by date and month in folders so they are likely to be qrouped reasonably sensible in those.

  • Bootable external drive file removal query.

How do I remove all the stuff from a bootable external drive that require permissions I don't have? Thanks.

The Sharing and Permissions are greyed out. When I unlock the padlock I can only check the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" - Will this do what I want? I am using Tidy up and do not want to delete everything (using for eg.  Disk Utility) ... I just want to get rid of much of what I cannot get rid of. Hope that makers sense. Thanks.

  • Holding down the option key when booting my iMac lo longer shows me my bootable external drives, the system just boots up to the main system. Also, holding down command, option,P,R no longer zaps the p-ram. the system just boots up.

Holding down the option key when booting my iMac lo longer shows me my bootable external drives, the system just boots up to the main system. Also, holding down command, option,P,R no longer zaps the p-ram. the system just boots up normally. Why do these key fonctions no longer work?

It could be your timing if on a bluetooth keyboard.  I find it best to hit the keys as soon as i hear the chime, release and hit them again but this time holding them before the chime ends....like a fake pump in football.
But....you can always open up system preferences, startup disk, and select your bootable clone for booting.  If it doesn't show up there, the Mac doesn't think it's bootable.

  • Create Full HD Backup to encrypted bootable external drive

I have used SuperDuper to copy my internal HD to a bootable external drive configured with a 300 GB partition. Now I want to go one step further by creating that same backup but this time I want my external data to be encrypted for added security. I do not care if the OS and Applications files are encrypted as long as I can encrypt my home folder.
    1) Does SuperDuper have an encryption feature?
If yes, how do you activate it?
    2) If not, can I accomplish what I want using a Macbook Pro utility e.g. Disk Utility and perhaps
    turn on FileVault?
    3) Can I simply just turn on FileVault encryption and use Finder to drag my internal HD to external?
If yes, will my external drive now be bootable still?
    Thanks in advance.

Turn on Filevault, then use SuperDuper.

  • HT4946 How do i change where itunes sends the back up file? I need it in an external drive?

I need it in an external drive?
No question about getting more computer memory or doing a clean up, none of it works.
The computer is no where near big enough for 25gb of stuff.
Im using Windowns XP, someone must have an easy solution, surlyey just because you buy an iphone doesnt mean you have to have a certain size computer!!
So please any one know how to change where the back up goes, i keep seeing answers about where they are but how do you set them to send to a differant place. ?
    Thanks Ash
P.S the phone is not usable its completely broken.

You can use File > Add folder to library to import the media from any location. If you don't see the menu bar press ALT or CTRL+B to display it. The default options for iTunes will have created a new library folder on the C: drive, and adding media in the way described will result in iTunes making new copies of each of your media files in the C:\ drive. If that's not what you want then I suggest you hold down the shift key as you click the icon to start iTunes and keep holding until asked to choose or create a library, click the create option, and create a libray at D:\iTunes. Move your existing media content into D:\iTUnes\iTunes Media and use File > Add folder to library to import D:\iTUnes\iTunes Media. This will make a self-contained portable library that is easy to backup & move in future.

  • I need to return a external drive to windows NTFS uncompressed but disc utility keep formatting in NTFS compressed

I need to return an external drive (Seagate GoFlex Satellite) to windows NTFS uncompressed format but disc utility keeps formatting in NTFS compressed.

OS X can only read NTFS partitions.  I doubt it can create them.  I only see MSDOS FAT and ExFAT as choices in Disk Utility and neither are NTFS.  If you have MacFUSE installed and the NTFS-3G plugin you might be able to do it in Disk Utility.  However, it will be very very slow.
It might be easier to connect the drive to a PC and format it that way.  Use the quick format option unless you suspect the disk to have bad sectors.  Or setup Boot Camp, install Windows and format the drive when you dual boot into Windows.  Or you could setup a virtual machine using Oracle VirtualBox, Parallels, or VMWare Fusion to access Windows so you can format the disk.

  • Need help buying new hard drive

I have a macbook that needs a new hard drive and need help knowing what hard drives to buy that will be compatible with it. It is a macbook pro 17inch model no: A1297.
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

Any 2.5" diameter, 9.5mm thick SATA drive will be compatible.  Currently they come up to 1.5 TB in capacity.  I have a 1 TB Seagate SSHD (hybrid) drive installed in my primary MBP.  The cost is a modest premium over a conventional HDD of the same capacity.  Boot and shutdown times are significantly faster when compared to a conventional HDD,  I can recommend this as an option.
If the bank account permits, an SSD will produce the overall maximum performance gains.  Boot, shutdown and resource hungry applications will be noticeably faster.  Casualyll use such as e-mails and text editing will produce no meaningful performance differences compared to a conventional HDD.
I am of the opinion that the cost premium is still too high for the benefits that they afford.  Other have different views.
    Ciao.

  • Deperately need help setting up external midi devices

I need help setting up external midi devices.....Motu828...Midi express...RolandXV3080....Motif rack.......HELP

Theres not really much to setup. Assuming your synths are connected to the MIDI Express already..
In Logic, make a new MIDI track. On the left hand side in the track inspector, among the parameters you'll see an option for MIDI Port and Channel. Just pick which port the track is going to, set the channel and device id and play (And be glad you never had to deal with setting up the old Environment window in Logic 5 and below).
If you really wanna get into it and have all your MIDI ports named after the synth thats connected to it, open up Audio Midi Setup, create a device icon for each synth you have and draw the cables from each device to whatever port its connected to on the midi interface's icon.
Then in Logic everytime you pick your MIDI port on your track, instead of MIDI Port 1, MIDI Port 2, etc.,
it would be labelled XV-3080, Motif Rack, and so on.. I dont think theres anyway to do this within Logic itself (you can change the labels on your audio ins and outs, but not MIDI as far as I can recall)..
If youre talking about having access to patch names and whatnot like Digital Performer and Cubase let you do, Logic doesnt use the xml patch lists everyone else does. The above steps are pretty much all there is to be done as far as MIDI.
Heres my Audio Midi Setup window for reference.
Now when I select MIDI Port 1 in Logic its named MWXT, port 2 is SR-16, etc..

  • HELP!  Urgent need of info on External Drive format for iPhoto!!!!!

OK, I am running out of space on my MacBook's internal 80GB drive (funny, when I started I thought that was huge, lol). I got an external 500GB GForce, and love it. When I got it set up I found that the FAT32 works with the Mac OS X, and I should still be able to access those files from a Windows system. Turns out I am going to need that because I am going to need to ship my MacBook to Apple for repair (unrelated issue), and the only other system I have to be able to access any of my business's mission-critical data will be a Dell with either Windows or Linux on it. I have found a few discussions here, tho, that mention that the drive needs to ve formatted in a Mac format "or else". WHY???? Is this really an issue, or no longer with the Intel Mac & OS X? I have copied files to the External drive, and seem to be able to access them OK. Oh, in case it matters, they are jpg.
Please HELP!!!!! My panic is that one of my businesses is photography, and I can't afford to loose any of these pix! Apple tech supp told me he can't find any documentation that says what the drive format must be, but then they can't figure out why my system keep shutting itself down without me having to ship it back to them, so I don't have a warm fuzzy about that, lol.
    THANKS!
    Andrea

    breathe joy:
There's a way to have your photos on the external drive but have a library on your Mac using iPhoto 6's alias mode. That keeps the bulk of the file size off your Mac. I have 17,600 images (27G in size) on an external HD and my library is only 1.6G in size. Check out these Tutorials on how to go about setting it up. The caveat is that the PC user, as JMEH pointed out, should not work on the actual files but save any edited versions to another locations. Those files should be read only for all users.
    Do you Twango?

  • Need help repairing Driver - pic included.

Hey guys, i have been trying to get boot camp to work on my macbook for ages. First i got it to work, but then when i used windows, it wouldn't recognize my wireless in my macbook. Anyways, to make a long story short, i used the boot camp assistant tonight to delete the windows partition, then i was trying to re-install windows XP.
As most of you know, the first step is to partition the disks, when i told it how much to partition of each it came up with a driver error saying i needed to repair the disks.
so, i went to disk utility to try and verify the disk, its did, but then it came up with this:
    http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f344/kawirider04/Untitled-1-1.jpg
any help would be great guys, i eventually want to run windows xp on my blackbook so i can play World of Warcraft with a higher framerate. Anyways, thanks in advance!
BTW - after i 'verify disk' i can't click on 'repair disk'
Black Macbook 1gb Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Boot up from your Install DVD and then launch Disc Utility to verify/repair the disc and permissions as well.

  • Need help setting up external hard drive for FCE project

    Hi folks,
Basically I am looking at making a 20-30 minute video this summer of my motocross adventures and what not and have equipped myself with an iMac (2.93 GHZ Core2Duo 640GB 4GB) and of course, FCE. I have tried smaller projects before (ranging in length between 20 seconds to upwards of a few minutes) but have noticed an overall decline in computer speed which I am under the impression is being caused by the 10s of GBs of video project files and what not that seem to be scrawled away within my computer. Before I made any videos, my computer was sitting around 560 GBs of free space. Since making maybe 3-4 videos (50/50 iMovie and FCE) its down below 400GBs. I'm not sure whether it's the raw video files or the projects themselves that are so large, but it's slightly frustrating. Is there any sort of software (either third party or apple) that can look at your hard drive and tell you exactly where all the biggest files are? I'll post this question in the iMac forum as I realize this is for FCE, but I thought if anyone knew of one it would be extremely helpful.
Anyways, I have a SimpleDrive 320GB external HD that I plan to use as my external for making this project within FCE and would like some help in terms of how to set it up with FCE, what are the best settings etc. It is currently formatted with Windows, so I will also need help in setting it up for a Mac. I do have about 120GBs used on it already and was also wondering if I could keep this when re-formatting, but I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to that.
Sorry for the long-winded post; any information on this or something related would be fantastic. Thanks.

Yes, you can use your external HD with FCE ... provided it is formatted as +Mac OS Extended+ and is connected via FireWire.
You will need to back up any data that is on the drive that you want to keep. Before reformatting it. Formatting erases everything that is on the drive.
Use Disk Utility (located in your +Applications > Utilities+ folder) to format the drive.
After formatting the drive, go into +FCE > System Settings+ and change your FCE scratch disk location to the external drive.

  • Need help with networking external hard drive

    Hi,
I am working on a corporate network and I have a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition external hard drive attached to a Mac OSX 10.4. i have other Macs connecting through the network to this Mac and accessing the external hard drive and it works just fine for that.
What I need help with is the fact that I also have several PCs on the same network (all XP), that need to connect to the hard drive and access the files. I've been able to connect to the Mac using the XP by accessing the IP address. I also set the Mac up with password credentials so that I had to log in to the Mac to access the files. But when I try to access the Mac, it only shows the main computer drive as the only available share and no external drive.
Does anyone know how to access a Western Digital external drive on a Mac from a PC through a network?

For an external hard disk drive or other (different) system shared
storage devices to work, they probably should be formatted in a
format seen by both operating systems.
If the WD unit is not seen by Windows computers on your network,
the WD may have been formatted in HFS+ for the Macintosh. That
is OK unless you need a Windows computer to access the same.
    The Macintosh can see and use a standard Windows disc format;
so the external drive may need to be reformatted away from HFS+
if that is really what is going on (and archive any data on the suspect
drive elsewhere, since it will be lost to reformatting overwrites)
and then both Mac OS X and Windows should see the files on there.
    And Macs set up to run Windows may also see the non-Mac format;
without having to re-boot via BootCamp, if that option is in use.
As to the other question(s) I really have no idea at this point in time.
And since that may be the rub, hopefully someone will follow up here.
    Good luck & happy computing!
