Need help restoring iPhoto 08 Library into iPhoto 11

Ok, I have spent hours trying to figure this out on my own. I'm not being lazy but I need help!  I have a black macbook (2009) that had Leopard (not Snow) and iPhoto 08. It crashed. I had a time machine backup on external drive. I got a new hard drive installed and they upgraded me to Lion and iPhoto 11.  I messed up and started the system without hooking up to time machine. I tried to use migration assistant. It imported only imported 400 pics of my many thousand pics.
I did several things: I tried to rebuild the library, look for orphans, etc. I deleted the ProjectDBVersion.plist, Projects.db, Projects.db-journal files as someone suggested. I deleted the new iphoto 11 library. i dragged the my old iphoto library from time machine. I held down option and tried to build it again from the old library. I still get the same 400 pics. I even tried the free version of Photo Library Manager. It created the same library with 400 pics. (not sure if I know how to use this app right).
If I open the new iphoto 11 library, I can see my pics in the  "Masters" file.  I was able to drag these to my desktop and then put in iphoto but does this method save my edits? Should I drag the "Modified" pics into iphoto instead? I don't care much about keywords, I just want my edits. I also don't want old deleted photos put back into iphoto.
another question, time machine (TM) is not turned on yet with new hard drive and OS. it doesn't recognize my external drive as TM. It asks if I want to designate it as TM. If I do this, will it delete my old backup (with all my important data) and start a new backup of my new hard drive which doesn't have all the pics yet.
I don't have a copy of Lion so if I do a complete restore, I will have to buy it and add all info again. Is this my best option? Would it really make a difference?
Terrance, you out there?
Thanks for any help!

It might start backing up your new drive but will not erase what's on it as long as there is sufficient space. Also you can turn on TM and exclude your entire HD via the TM Options pane.
Then go to your Pictures folder and enter Time Machine.  Go back to the appropriate date, select the library and use the Restore button.
OT
NOTE:  if you have trouble entering TM's backups go to the Lion forum and ask your question there.  Also do a search there for Time Machine so see if there are any similar topics there already.

  • Need help restoring iphoto.

    How/ what do I need to do, to have iphoto, as if it was the first time ever, and ask me to select my library or a cd whatever, to put photos on. I am currently trying to bring everything over from my user and making a new one cause I notice alot of problems with my old user compared to a new one I made to see a difference and theres a big difference. But right now I made a mistake and I need to get iphoto back to the point of slectin the library,
    Nathan

    Hi Nathan,
    If there is an iPhoto Library folder in your Pictures folder just rename it, then launch iPhoto. When you launch iPhoto it will ask you if you want to create a new library or open another library. Or you can hold down the Option key when launching iPhoto and you will be asked to do the same thing.
    When you launch iPhoto holding down the Option key this is the window you will get.
    Create a new library or choose a library to open
    Choose to create a new library if that is what you want to do, or choose a library to open by clicking the "choose" button.
    If you click the "create library" iPhoto will open with a brand new library for you to import images to. If you click "choose" then you will get this window.
    Open library
    Navigate to where the library is on your computer and then choose it.
    You will probably have to change permissions on the iPhoto Library folder for the new user also. Do a "get info" on the folder and make sure the permissions are read/write for the new user and click the "apply to enclosed items" button at the bottom.

  • Need help restoring iphoto and iphoto library

    Hi, I have been trying for over a year to restore my iphoto library which was lost when my hard drive died. Since I often go months between attempts, I kind of forget what we have already tried. I think we have tried rebuilding it as suggested in other posts. When we have done this, I think we have ended up with about 6 copies because when we search in spotlight, it says we have 19,196 jpgs!
    When the hard drive died we had about 3000 photos. I believe all of them are still there in the mom and dad user, and they seem to be undistorted-yeah! However, when I click on the iphoto icon, I only get the task bar, no window opens up, and almost all the options are gray.
    So basically, if I want to find a photo, I have to go through a long path, locate the thumbnail, drag it to the desktop and then I can use it.
    I have read many of the similar posts, but I was still unsure what to try first in my situation. I imagine I need to get rid of about 16,000 copies of my original photos before I do anything else.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to make a family album, and I really need those photos!
    Thank you all in advance. This is a wonderfully suportive community.
    I don't know what version of iphoto I am running (or was running?), but I think it is an older one, since my g4 is several years old, and I don't think I ever purchased ilife. If someone can tell me how to check, I will provide the info.

    Hi, thanks again for your reply.
    I looked through some of the jpgs from spotlight, and I found at least 1000 that weren't photos, just some weird random stuff I didn't recognize.
    Yes, the rebuild did work for awhile, but then it was gone again. It doesn't seem like it lasted very long. Also, I had the same problems others described with all the albums lost, and it seems like there were some photos I thought were lost as well. Like I said, I go months between my attempts to do this because it is so time consuming, so that is why I can't remember all the details.
    Anyway, I thought that when I had it restored for a short time that I had backed up my photos, but now I can't find the disks, so maybe I never got around to it. You can bet I will be doing it this time!
    For the sake of my book I am trying to get done for Christmas, would it be bad to just search through my jpgs, make a folder of some of them on the desktop, and then import them to shutterfly?
    Also, I am wondering if buying the new ilife w/iphoto 8 would be a good idea right now or if it would just make a bigger mess of things? Would it have any way to search for my photos?
    Sorry for all the questions. Hopefully if there is a solution, I will be able to get there soon.

  • Please help need help restoring my Itunes library because of fatal PC crash

    Wondering if there's any hope out there, turned on my PC last night and the useless piece of #"!! Crashed on me throwing out error messages about it's kernal, I've tried everything to get it to boot enough that I could log in on safe mode and make a backup of my Iphone's library however it decided to crash every time I got to the login.
    I have been left with no choice but to format the hard drive & re-install the operating system, it's now running better than ever but you guessed it no library or any other files for that matter.
    Point is I know just about every second time I plugged in my Iphone to synch a backup of the data on the Iphone would start, right now I'm scared to plug it in in casethat does not happen & it wipes all my songs and apps off the Iphone which I dont think I could replace nevermind the phone book.
    I have re-installed Itunes and have authorized my acc on the new build but dont know if there is any way to restore the library from the Iphone.
    Any help on this would be a real lifesaver.
    yours sincerly
    Soon to be MAC convert.

    You should really back up important data, as hard drives can and do fail. I assume for the post, that you did not back-up your info.
    You can, with the iphone attached, hit File>Transfer Purchase. This will get the songs purchased from itunes. The other songs, photos, etc. are likely gone.

    If you have iPhoto '08 or older it is no longer supported for print products
    If you have iPhoto '09 or '11 reboot, launch iphoto and
    Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it.

I have followed all the instructions, it still isn't working. I've uninstalled and reinstalled all that the steps told me to, I've updated everything in my computer. I don't know what else to do. My phone will just show the apple sign and the itunes plug in sign.

    I need help restoreing my ipod nano 3rd gen so its like new

    Plug it to your computer using iPod USB Cable (any cable should work excluding iPhone 5 and Shuffle cables)...... when you see your iPod in iTunes go to that iPod and click restore...... the whole process should take (depending on what you have on your iPod and its is up to date) it should take no longer than 30 minutes...... then it will ask if you want to set up as new iPod or restore from back-up (itunes back up), since you said:
    so its like new
    click set as new iPod and follow through what they said.

    After a crash of my HD, i need to restore my Itune Library which is in an external HD. how can I do that, Thanks

    I still don't know if the drive that crashed was the external drive, or if it was the internal drive, and if it was the external drive if that was the only copy of the library.
    Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
    Select the store on the left side of iTunes.
    Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
    You can re-download your available previous purchases.

    Mission accomplished. While waiting for your reply,. I found an article that mentioned a copy/paste of the following code from the old pref.js to the new pref.js:
    user_pref("ldap_2.servers.OutlookExpressAddressBoo.position", 0);
    user_pref("ldap_2.servers.OutlookExpressAddressBoo_1.description", "Outlook Express Address Book");
    user_pref("ldap_2.servers.OutlookExpressAddressBoo_1.dirType", 2);
    user_pref("ldap_2.servers.OutlookExpressAddressBoo_1.filename", "impab-1.mab");
    user_pref("ldap_2.servers.OutlookExpressAddressBoo_2.description", "Outlook Express Address Book");
    user_pref("ldap_2.servers.OutlookExpressAddressBoo_2.dirType", 2);
    user_pref("ldap_2.servers.OutlookExpressAddressBoo_2.filename", "impab.mab");
    That identified the impab.mab file, and now all my contacts are showing.

  • HT1349 I need help finding an old library that itunes states my ipod is already linked to

    I need help finding an old library that it states my ipod is already linked to.  My computer recently had a terrible virus and needed to be wiped clean.  I had to redownload itunes and I bought several songs.  I want to add them to my old library because I had several cd's that I had uploaded.  Is there a way to find that old library and combine them without having to erase all the songs that are currently on my ipod???  Thanks

    Umm.  If you wiped the hard drive, then all old libraries are gone unless you have them on backup.

  • Need help saving iPhoto library from damaged hard drive

    Trying to help my wife, she has the following:
    MacBook Pro running OS X Lion version 10.7.3
    iPhoto 11 version 9.2.2
    Her hard drive failed last week and she had a ton of photos on it, of course not backed up.
    We took her machine to the local Apple Store, they confirmed they couldn't recover the data and they installed a new hard drive in the MacBook.  We took the old hard drive to my local PC supplier who's very clever, he worked on the hard drive and was able to copy all my wife's documents to another storage device.....but, he couldn't copy the iPhoto library and is requesting some help.....he doesn't know much about Macs, nor how iPhoto works.
    I've read a lot of the posts on this forum and am learning about how the iPhoto library works....and how it requires a Mac based back up hard drive in order to copy it.  Okay, here are my questions:
    1.  My PC troubleshooting guy can see the iPhoto library icon on the damaged hard drive, he says its a huge file.  It appears we would need to supply him with a Mac formated back up hard drive, then he could just move that iPhoto library icon (which contains all photos) to the new back up drive.  Is this correct?
    2.  Once we have this old iPhoto library on the new back up hard drive, we could bring it home of course, but then I need to get it into the new hard drive on my wife's MacBook Pro.  I'm assuming I can plug this back up drive into my wife's machine, then import the old library into her machine.  How do I do this properly?
    3.  If I bring the old library into the new MacBook Pro hard drive, will it erase the existing iPhoto library on her new hard MacBook Pro hard drive, or will it combine them somehow?  She has added of course some pics to the new iPhoto library already, but if we have to delete them it won't kill us.  The old stuff that got recovered from the damaged drive is more important.
    Thanks ahead.....now to the experts?

    Thanks Terence.....
    regarding this point:
    3. use the paid version ($20) of  iPhoto Library Manager to merge the Libraries. that way you won't lose anything.
    I have another access to her new photos, whereby I could reload them onto her MacBook if we lose the new library.....so I'll save the $20 and just reload them.....two more questions:
    1.  So, if I drag the iPhoto library folder from the new back up hard drive to the Pictures Folder in Finder, will that overwrite the existing library folder on her MacBook?
    2.  After I drag this folder into finder, will iPhoto recognize everything?  I assume yes....just checking.
    thanks ahead!
