Need help, system reboot.- Java

For a few months I've been trying to figure out why my system suddenly reboots when online and accessing a new web page. In fact, when I get the auto message from Microsoft on critical updates and click on it, as soon as that page starts loading my system reboots. My thought initially was something Java was causing it because some web pages were fine but others.... kaput! Since I had recently upgraded from Norton AntiVirus to System Works and to AOL 7.0 I initially suspected them. I uninstalled System Works and reinstalled NAV with no difference. I have searched help pages on Microsoft and tech sites to no avail. Two days ago I was searching in Control Panel (Win98B) and saw a Java icon that looked unfamiliar. Ah ha! Now I do download utilities (I am not a techie but know more than the average bumbler) so thought I must have downloaded something that placed the icon there. I went to Add/REmove programs and found Java 2 (I think) there and uninstalled it.
Well, I am still rebooting. I looked in the registry (I did not touch) and did a search for Java and found several entries.
So, am I on the right track? Can anyone assist me?
(Including how to get back to this thread after wor.. I will try! (this list is huge!)
Thank you

The java icon in your control panel is placed there when you install JRE 1.3 or higher. You were probably prompted by a web page at some point to install the newer version of Java to view the content of the page. This is not a bad thing at all. Java more than likely wouldn't crash your computer. Its most likely a bad video card driver or network/modem card driver depending on how you connect to the internet. But a random reboot in my experience has almost always been due to a video card driver. Try upgrading that. You say AOL suspected Norton System Works? I assume you mean it said it might be a virus? This is very common with antivirus software. This is why a lot of anti virus software will tell you to disable System Works before installing it. You can rest assured that Norton System Works isn't a virus.

    My Itunes will not launch after downloading and I have tried all the troubleshooting for itunes for Windows 7 64-bit. Do I need to system reboot my computer than try to download it again?

    I'm having a very similar issue, paired with iTunes not being able to get online.
    iTunes shows up in processes and then hangs at 17,000 K or so -- sometimes it will start up, but that (if it occurs) is a delay of literal hours.
    Pretty meticulously went through all the 'cannot connect' trouble shooting, and have uninstalled, restarted, and then reinstalled every piece of apple software; issue is just as firm. Starting in safe mode or admin mode don't fix it; signing in as a different user doesn't fix it.

    Need help, system won't start up
    When I turn on the system I hear a loud squeaking noise that could be coming from the hard drive, it does it for moment then a blank white screen appears w/ a tiny folder in the middle of the screen with a "?" blinking on and off on the folder. I never had any problems until now. What can I do, any suggestions.

    hi capitala1,
    +When I try to install the operating system to the internal drive, I don't see a destination option for that drive like I did for the external+
    Do you mean that it doesn't show up when you try to startup holding down the option key, or that it doesn't show up in Disk Utility when started up on the external disk?
    +...You think the drive is bad, if so, what can I do to retrieve some of the data off of it.+
    Yes, it sounds like your hard drive is bad. Do you have access to techtools or Disk Warrior? either of these may be able to repair the drive enough to extract your info from it, if disk utility can't.
    I know that there are shops that specialize in extracting info from bad hard drives, but they tend to be pretty expensive. I am sure others on this forum will be able to help you find one if you are interested.
    PB
    PS it isn't going to help this time, but remember in the future, backup, everything important to you regularly!

  • Winhelp Help system and Java

    Hello,
    Of the several products we develop, one, a Java program, uses the Java Help help system (logically). The others use a standard Winhelp help system (developed in Robohelp). Our current workflow for developing a help system for the Java program is to batch convert the Winhelp RTF files into HTML files. The problem is, most of our Winhelp formatting is either dropped or incorrectly represented in the Java help file. Also, I prefer the look and feel of a Winhelp system over Java.
    Is it possible for a Java program to be modified so that it supports a Winhelp help system and not a Java Help system? If so, how is this done, and where can one find information on the process?
    If not, what options do we have to "pretty up" the Java output from the conversion?
    Thanks!
    Todd

    Thanks for your response. Could you direct me to a resource that explains the steps for accomplishing this? I'll need to provide the development staff with instructions.
    Thanks again!

    hi guys i need help i want to know how to call a prog to run and excute with java a command like shell in VB and System in c

    Use Runtime. You have to make sure you read the output or the program will hang...
    Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process rtProcess = rt.exec(cmd);
    String result = readSTDOUT(rtProcess);
    String readSTDOUT(Process p) throws Exception {
        InputStream in = p.getInputStream();
        byte [] output = new byte [1024];
        int len;
        StringBuffer buf = new StringBuffer();
        while((len = in.read(output)) >= 0) {
          buf.append(new String(output, 0, len));
        in.close();
        // check stderr if stdout was empty.
        if (buf.length() == 0 ) {
          in = p.getErrorStream();
          while((len = in.read(output)) >= 0) {
            buf.append(new String(output, 0, len));
          in.close();
        return buf.toString();
      }

  • Please help system reboots

    All of the stuff I have is listed in my gig. My system has been randomly rebooting. Windows XP installed ok and the system runs ok enough for me to surf the web. It kind of has me stumped I can be on it for a long time and surf the web and it is fine, I have only installed one game simpsons hit and run and after playing that for a little while the system reboots. Sometimes it happens when I am not playing a game too . I used to have a Geforce 4 in the system and the reboots would happen after playing the simpsons for like 1 minute or 2 so I installed  a radeon becuase I was planning to upgrade anyway. The system was running more stable with the radeon but today it rebooted on me again after playing the simpsons lfor like an hour. It would reboot and tell me the system recovered from a serious error BPCode:d1 yadda yadda os_ver and some other stuff. I set it to not reboot from an error and today it quit out of the simpsons and sent me to the desktop, I told it to shut down and thats when it gave me a blue screen and said something to the effect of ERROR_IRQL_NOT_ LESS_THAN. I tried testing my RAM and it passed 9 out of 11 tests but I had to go to work so I did not test it fully. Back when I had the geforce 4 in there i tried setting the FSB to 201 and that helped with overall system stability but it still rebooted alot. Tried uping RAM voltage to 2.70 and that helped a little too but system still reboots. I read in another post you guys said not to have SATA+PATA enabled but wouldn't the system not find CD-ROMS if I was set to SATA only? If anyone has seen this before or has any ideas please let me know any ideas or what else you might need to know. I will check RAM tonight and let memtest run all tests and check back here but if anyone has any ideas about this then please let me know.

    Hey, NovJoe asked you about memory timings and that was the first thing I was going to ask you too. I have a similar system I'll list on the bottom. I have the Corsair 512x2 PC3700 @3,4,4,8 timing.....My system used to reboot itself A LOT. For NO apparant reason, no matter what I was doing, playing a game, chating online, or surfing websites. I've always had something wrong with my system so I can't tell you exactly what will help, but maybe you can check out some things and decide if you want to change them.
    I guess first, you need to make sure all your voltage settings are right. Your processor will run OK with the stock voltages, but uping them a little doesnt hurt. I have mine at 1.55...
         Your memory timings should be set at 2.7....The Bios auto is 2.5, but there have been a lot of posts and reviews that say uping the memory voltage to 2.7 (even PC3200), will give you better stability. I have mine at 2.75 because I overclock....I wouldnt recommend anything above 2.7 for you though unless you choose to...I've learned AGP voltages should be at 1.5, nothing more.
    On the software side, my random reboots and lockups has 75% of the time corrupted important windows system files. Sometimes a little icon will appear at the corner next to the time, other times I will get no message. Run "chkdsk" through "Start" ~> "Run" and type "CHKDSK" in. If you have, good, but this is only one program to run. Disk Defragmenter also checks for corrupt files and will let you know if you have any.
         Your reboots could be due to a corrupt file, and it doesnt have to be a Windows file either. I installed "CORECENTER" at least 3 time, fresh installs and updates, and I didnt have to run the program for it to corrput my system. I ended up deleting it and have not used it since.
         I guess if your not sure a program is the problem, the last resort you should take is to format your system. I've formatted at least 15 times (my luck) and I'm sorry to say I've gotten used to it...I just partition my hard drive and store EVERYTHING important on it...so that if Windows refuses to boot or locks up and doesnt want ot start, I can safely partition the WINDOWS parition without loosing any of my data. Windows will even let you have partions with different file systems such as NTFS or FAT32 at the same time....(this is my case).
    Ahhhh....I was writing my specs and I REMEMBERED SOMETHING! Corny i know, i'm on medication  ......     anyway....try to run your MAT..found in BIOS under "Frequency and Voltage" (or something like that) to "FAST"....I know if I set it to "Ultra", my system was a little less reliable. Try changing your memory speeds in the same options list to "AUTO" or "200", give one a try because you should be running your memory at either one of these speeds. I assume "200" will give you a more reliable system because it is not workig faster than its rated speed.
    Write back and tell me if any of this helped. It took me months of playing around and with my luck, to get this far, and things are working for me. It took a while to know and get a feeling of working with the BIOS to know my system well enough. If its not the hardware, then blame Microsoft  .....serisouly though, it could be them and a nice format is needed (sorry to tell you)
    MY SPECS:
    X-Alien case with 4xx watt power supply...I wanted your case badly but was short on $...and then a week later after ordering the case I had the money..my luck
    MSI 865PE NEO2 LS

  • Need help: computer reboots whenever java is initiated.

    Recently received a used computer with xp installed.
    Every time I initiate something to do with java the computer restarts.
    For Instance:
    in control panel - clicking on the java console.
    online - using online storage service "adrive.com" to upload files.
    installing - running the java installer for jedit.
    Each one of these things causes a reboot.
    I've deleted and reinstalled the latest java runtime environment, ran virus/spyware scans, deleted everything from the computer I don't need, and cleaned the registry, but nothing has solved the problem.
    Searched for a solution on google and troubleshooting guides, but the terms: java, reboot, xp, etc; are all so common that the results don't come anywhere close to the answer I need.

    Wouldn't you know it. After spending all this time searching for an answer, almost immediately after I posted this I found the answer here on this forum:
    http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=32&threadID=689707
    Thanks to: Caffeine0001
    For those who want to know: All I did was update my -Display Adapter- driver through -Device Manager- and ran windows update. Windows update probably had nothing to do with the fix, but it updated .NET to 3.5 and updated IE to version 8.
    Good To Go!

  • Need help with basic Java programming

    I'm having a little bit of trouble with my code. For the sake of argument, I've removed the code I'm having trouble with, because I know it was inaccurate. I'm trying to create a loop so that this program will keep going through and through until the user enters an invalid variable. I thought the default after the case statements was supposed to make the system exit and output my message. Those two problems, the loop and the default, are what I'm really having problems with. My code is posted below.
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    import java.util.Locale;
    import java.text.NumberFormat;
    public class Retail
    public static void main(String args[])
    String firstNum;
    String secondNum;
    String result;
    int prodNum;      //first number to input
    double quantity; //second number to input
    double total = 0.0;     //total of Prod * Quantity Sold for all items
    // To use American Dollar
    NumberFormat moneyFormat = NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance( Locale.US );
    // first number entered as string
    firstNum = JOptionPane.showInputDialog( "Enter product number 1-5" );
    // second number entered as string
    secondNum = JOptionPane.showInputDialog( " Enter quantity of items sold" );
    // convert values to type double or int from type string
    prodNum = Integer.parseInt( firstNum );
    quantity = Double.parseDouble( secondNum);
    result="";
    if ( prodNum >=1 && prodNum <=5 ) {
    switch (prodNum)
    case 1: // 1st product
    total = 2.98 * quantity;
    break;
    case 2: // 2nd product
    total = 4.50 * quantity;
    break;
    case 3: // 3rd product
    total = 9.98 * quantity;
    break;
    case 4: //4th product
    total = 4.49 * quantity;
    break;
    case 5:
    total = 6.87 * quantity;
    break;
    default: JOptionPane.showMessageDialog( null, "Wrong product number entered" );
    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog( null, moneyFormat.format(total), "Total Price of Items Purchased", JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE );
    System.exit(0);
    ***I know I need to put something in the user input message to state that any value other than 1-5 entered will cause the program to skip to the output, I'll put that in later.***

    When you post code, please use [code] and [/code] tags as described in Formatting Help on the message entry page. It makes it much easier to read and prevents accidental markup from array indices like [i].

  • I'm writing a mazerace game...I need help from a Java Pro regarding GUI

    I've tested my code using a textUI, but not successful with GUI.
    Following are the files I have at present but are incomplete...someone please assist me, let me know what I'm missing to run the program successfully in a window.
    All I need to do is to bring the maze (2D array) onto a window, and listen to the keys (A,S,D,W & J,K,L,I) and make the move accordingly (using the move method in the MazeRace Class)

    * -Initializes instance variables used to store the current state of the game
    * -When a player moves it checks if the move is legal
    * and updates the state of the game if move is allowable and made
    * -Reports information about current state of the game when asked:
    * o whether game has been won
    * o how many moves have been made by a given player
    * o what is the current configuration of the maze, etc.

  • Need help writing a Java rule in PDF Forms

    I have created an invoice for my contractors via "forms", and in turn made each cell either a drop down list or "read only" field so they cannot change the rate of pay, etc.  Here is my issue...My first drop down cell is titled "Job Description".  When the contractor selects one of the 8 dropdown options within the Job Description field, I would like it to automatically fill in the hourly rate that is associated with that particular job description (or skill).  I currently have my "rate" cell as a drop down, and I want to make that a read only, and when you select the A1 position from Job Description, it will populate the "rate" field with the appropriate amount for that A1 rate.  I believe this can be done with writing some Java script, but I have never played with Java and I don't really have the time to teach myself.  If anyone can help with me a quick tutorial, or even the formula I should use, so that I can just plug and play, that would be super helpful.  If this is a time consuming issue, I would be interested in paying someone to do it for me. Thank you!

    Hi George,
    I was able to copy my data over to a fresh document, and now it works just fine....thank you so much for your insight and help!
    I have another question if you have a moment.
    I am trying to do a simple calculation of start time and end time for my employees.  Do I need to do this via a javascript, and if so, what area in properties of the result field should I copy it to?  for the purpose of the script, the fields are as follows:
    DataField1 = start time
    DataField2 = end time
    DataField3 = total time
    I would like to use the h:MM tt format for my time fields if possible.
    I've attached a link to the file through my dropbox account, and you'll notice that I created three new fields at the top of the invoice just to test the time calculations before i mock up the whole document.

    Any help you can give me would awesome!
    Thank you!!

  • Need Help with a JAVA programming assignment

    How do I write a JAVA program that could be used as the start of an MS-DOS/Windows simulation of the IEEE 802.3 protocol? I am to only code the parts necessary to build the 802.3 frame. For the initial implementation, the Checksum function need not be a CRC function, and the Destination and Source addresses wil be in input, stored, and output, and in dotted-decimal format.
    I need:
    1. A record to describe the frame, with each field being a (byte-) string of the required size, except that the Data field is of variable size. Although the "Source address" and "Destination address" would be 6 bytes for a real implementation, for this first implementation you can either assume they'll be text strings in the usual "dotted decimal" form (e.g. "14.04.05.18.01.25" as a typical example--from Tanenbaum, p. 429), or 6 hex digits.
    2. Suitable constant declarations for values such as the standard "Preamble" and "Start of Frame" values.
    3. Suitable functions to Get the three variable values "Destination address", "Source address", and "Data" from the standard input device.
    4. A suitable function to display each of the fields of a given frame in a format such as:
    Preamble: ...
    StartofFrame: ...
    Destination: ...
    etc.
    5. A suitable function to generate a "Pad" field if necessary.
    6. A "dummy" Checksum-generating function which just takes the first 32 bits (4 bytes) of the Data (or Data+Pad, if necessary) rather than an actual CRC algorithm.
    I have no experience with Java. Can you help me or start me in the right direction?
    Thanks...........TK

    If you have no experience with Java, then it seems to me your first step should be to start learning the language. But it's difficult to advise how, since we don't know anything about your background. There are many good books available on Java, some are for beginners and some are for advanced programmers, so I'd suggest you go somewhere that has a large selection and start looking for something that doesn't seem completely over your head.

  • Need Help with a Java program

    Hey
    I am doing a bachelor of Multimedia and for some reason I was forced to do Programming 1 which is just Java programing.I have been doing pretty well but we have the final exam coming up on Thursday and they told us to learn how to do this question but I have no idea how to do it, could someone please help me?
    Write a program that reads a file containing a list of students' student numbers and names, and then writes out another file in which the students have been formed into project groups.
    Sample input file:
    96439530 Naranek, Kosh
    08532109 Ivanova, Susan
    87642078 Sheridan, John
    44327889 Varner, Dell
    98100023 Kotto, Vir
    66345689 Sinclair, Jeffrey
    77421009 Garibaldi, Michael
    88775544 Winters, Talia
    54321098 Alexander, Lyta
    12345098 Mollari, Londo
    03465499 Takashima, Laurel
    88765432 Kyle, Benjamin
    08876500 Keffer, Warren
    07687878 Cole, Marcus
    For the project course: no group should have more than 5 members; and it is desireable that all groups have as close to 5 members as possible; and that students be allocated to groups alphabetically by family name, as in this sample output file:
    Group 1:
    Lyta Alexander (54321098)
    Susan Ivanova (08532109)
    Benjamin Kyle (88765432)
    John Sheridan (87642078)
    Dell Varner (44327889)
    Group 2:
    Marcus Cole (07687878)
    Warren Keffer (08876500)
    Londo Mollari (12345098)
    Jeffrey Sinclair (66345689)
    Talia Winters (88775544)
    Group 3:
    Michael Garibaldi (77421009)
    Vir Kotto (98100023)
    Kosh Naranek (96439530)
    Laurel Takashima (03465499)
    Students' names are first sorted (Alexander, Cole, Garibaldi, Ivanova, ...), then allocated to the tutes in rotation (Alexander to 1, Cole to 2, Garibaldi to 3, Ivanova to 1, ...).
    Note also that the student's details are written in a different format from the input. You may make the (usually wrong!) assumption that each student has a simple one-word family name and one other name.

    I'm sorry too annoy you again but I don't know how to implement what you told me. Here is my current code:
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    class DetailSortTest {
         public void run() {
              try {
                   BufferedReader in = new
                   BufferedReader(new FileReader ("Data.txt"));
                   String line = in.readLine();
                   String[] names = new String [10];
                   int i = 0;
                   PrintWriter FileOut = new
                   PrintWriter(new FileWriter ("Data 2.txt"));
                   processFilesTest(in, FileOut);
                   in.close();
                   FileOut.close();
              } catch (FileNotFoundException f) {
                   System.out.println("Could Not Open The File");
              } catch (IOException i){
                   System.out.println(i.getMessage());
         public void processFilesTest (BufferedReader in, PrintWriter FileOut)
         throws IOException {
              String data[] = new String[100];
              List dList = new ArrayList();
              String NLine = in.readLine();
              FileOut.println(NLine);
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              DetailSortTest anObject = new
              DetailSortTest();
              anObject.run();
    How would I do it I tried:
    NLine.split(data[2]+""+data[1]+""+data[0]);
    But all that displays is null, null, null
    I know I am probably so stupid but I really appreciate the help
