Need help to back up imac 27inch
hi
Turned imac off last night and powered it up this morning, all I had was the apple emblem and an upload bar below with a circular doing its thing in the middle and then shuts off.. spoke this morning to an apple advisor on the phone who took me through different procedures e.g pressing cmd alt and p+r, also shift after power up but would still switch off..At the time could not find the start up disc. Did get through to disk utility and in first aid chose the macintosh hd and verified disk permissions , then verified disk but an error occured and could not verify..Tried repair disk and again an error occured and suggested backing up data and wipe hard drive and reinstall.. as my apple care came to an end last month I was referred to my local apple store which is over an hour away.. In the mean time I have found startup disk and was able to connect an external hard drive to reinstall mac os x version 10.6.1 onto and run from the external drive and have now at least got the computer running.
I have 1000's of photos with my work on the macintosh hd and need them... and I am aware how to transfer photos , movies etc, but how can i manually transfer contacts, emails and itunes library also iphoto library to a second external hard drive so that i can erase and reload operating software to the original hard drive
Or am i able to still choose which drive to back up by using time machine
thanks

Need help migrating pc to imac. Do not have manual. Trying to get infornation online, but, cannot get an answer.
I have downloaded pc migration assistant to pc windows 8 pro. Was able to get imac to finally give me "the number"
Did the same with pc received number once, not same as imac. Pop up window with info dissappers and cannot recover
What am I doing wrong? Paid extra for extended support package and it took hours to finally get it registered and approved.
However, no help. Yikes, I feel like a make another great mistake!First: If you purchased AppleCare you should call back at 1-800-APL-CARE and ask for further assistance. You'll want to learn how to retrieve your operating system version and your IMac's serial number as you'll need these for when you call AppleCare:
Click on the Black Apple in the top left hand corner of your Imac's physical monitor
Click on About this Mac from the drop down menu
Below the silver Apple and "OS X" it will say "Version 10.x.x" (If this number is not 10.8.4, run Software Update by hitting the button marked "Software Update")
Click on this number twice in a row. This is your machine's serial number. (zeros can be used; the letter "O" is never used).
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1349 for details how to find serial numbers on Apple products
If you have an Apple ID (you can create one at appleid.apple.com), you can login to supportprofile.apple.com, register an Apple product, and sign up for VoicePass, which, if you give your product a name e.g. Maria's Imac, you can speak that over the phone and skip having to give the serial number when you call.
If you have an Apple ID, you can also call AppleCare and ask them to activate VoicePass.

Second: this is an educated guess: Your new Imac and your PC need to be either on the same wifi network or you need to connect them physically with an Ethernet cable (available at Radio Shack, Wal Mart, etc). My guess is that they are not, and so your IMac and PC are not talking to each other. That might be why you are seeing a different code on the PC.
Time Machine would not be relevant to your issue. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796 is the link to relevant instructions, however it left out some housekeeping you should do on your Imac before you begin a migration
Run Software Update on the IMac to confirm that the latest updates are installed.
On the IMac, make sure that you have the latest versions of any third-party software.
On the source Mac, open System Preferences, click Sharing, and make sure there is a name in the Computer Name field.
Do not let either computer go to sleep while you are attempting to migrate. To disable sleep on the IMac
Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu.
Choose Energy Saver from the View menu.
Adjust the "Computer sleep:" slider to Never. (Change this back after the migration is done).
You can adjust "Display Sleep" to a few minutes - this won't affect the migration
Uncheck the box if checked next to "Put Hard Disks to sleep when possible"
I don't know Windows 8 but this link looks promising as to how to disable sleep: http://techmell.net/how-to/disable-enable-sleep-mode-hibernate-windows-8/
Once you've done this, either connect both Mac and PC to the same wifi network and surf the web with each to confirm that connection is working - or connect them to each other with an Ethernet cable.
Then relaunch Migration Assistant on your Imac and your PC, and follow the instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796 starting with your IMac, or call AppleCare back.
Understand that if you have further issues, you'll need to help AppleCare help you by:
walking them through the steps you've taken in Migration Assistant
letting them guide you as they isolate the issue to either:
The Imac's software
The IMac's hardware
The PC's software
The PC's hardware
Firewall settings (maybe - especially if 3rd party firewalls are installed)
The wifi connection, if used
The ethernet connection, if used
I think the issue is likely what I guessed, or it's a software issue.
To learn more about your new Mac, I recommend this link: http://www.apple.com/support/imac/intel/
And this book: http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/0789749890
I am a technical support professional who troubleshoots Macs all day long. I do this for a living. The book above is the most accurate, and easy to understand book I've seen with respect to using Mountain Lion and its various applications. It's for a MacBook but the focus is on the software which is why I recommend it.
Don't feel like you have to rush to upgrade to OS X Mavericks. In fact, you should always confirm both all the hardware and software you use is compatible with any new operating system before you upgrade. And ask yourself: "why do I need it now?" Because it's new is not a good answer.
In the future, specifying any troubleshooting others have done will help those on these boards help you. Also, don't let a specific issue lead you to assume you've made an all-encompassing mistake. It's just one issue, and it's resolvable.
And everyone else: giving a dozen recommendations for reading will only leave the petitioner bewildered. Start with three. And try responding with a hypothesis as to what's causing the primary problem! -

I need help switching back to iPhoto
In February of this year I switched from iPhoto to Aperture for very specific reasons. My laptop's hard drive was running out of space, as it was housing my photo library that was quickly approaching 25,000 photos and pushing about 30 Gigabytes, and I wanted to take advantage of Aperture's ability to store photo masters on an external drive.
So why switch back? When I described why I had switched and my experiences doing so back in February I had said that I ran into many problems all of which I was able to solve save two:
"The two things I have yet to solve, which are rather large things: 1) Spotlight can no longer find my photos since switching to [edit: from] iPhoto. I am really not sure where to start with fixing this so I think I’m just going to have to ask someone. 2) Reorganizing my keywords in Aperture (since I had them set up in iPhoto) is impossible. When I bring up the Keywords HUD, I’m greeted with all of my keywords residing subordinately to a master keyword of 'iPhoto'. When I try to access the keywords that are “below” iPhoto Aperture freezes. Perhaps I have too many keywords (I do have an awful lot). I’m not sure how to solve this one yet either. Maybe there is a raw .plist file that I can manually edit (and I am willing to do so)." -- Me.
After using Aperture for the past 3+ months I've yet to resolve either of these issues. Recently there was an update to Aperture from Apple that, according to the documentation for the update, was supposed to help resolve my second issue with having too many keywords for Aperture to handle - but it hasn't helped much. So since switching to Aperture I've not tagged more than maybe fifty photos, which is discouraging because I know that once I switch back to iPhoto I'm going to be busy tagging photos again.
So I suppose you could say I'm switching back for two main reasons. First, I want it to be much easier to tag my photos since that is probably the single most important thing to me and the experience with iPhoto and Keyword Manager ( http://www.bullstorm.se/KeywordManager.php ) is far superior to that of using keywords in Aperture. Second, I want my photos to start showing up in Spotlight searches again. I'm more than willing to deal with the caveat, albeit a rather large one, that I won't have my photos with me wherever I go anywhere but that they'll forever reside on my firewire drive.
What I need help with...
When I open iPhoto I see all of the previews for the photos that I had the day I switched to Aperture. However, the originals have been moved by Aperture onto my firewire drive - so when I click on each photo all I get is a ( ! ) symbol. The previews still reference a file that does not exist yet the iPhoto database still retains all of the relevant metadata (date/time, keywords, comments, etc) that I had worked so hard to put into iPhoto. I need to retain this information and somehow get the originals back into place so that iPhoto sees them again.
What I thought about doing was this: 1) Somehow restore the originals for the almost 25,000 photos into the place where iPhoto thinks they should be. 2) Move the entire library to my external firewire drive. 3) Import the remaining images that I've taken since switching to Aperture into iPhoto.
Since I have Aperture store my photos by date - importing only the images that I've imported into Aperture should be a piece of cake. I do not need to retain any metadata from Aperture since I've only tagged a few photos in Aperture and all of the other information I may need should be on the original file (like date taken, etc.). I know I'm going to lose a lot of edits that I've done like cropping, rotating, color balancing, red-eye reduction, etc. but I'm more than willing to lose all of that if it means that I can pick up where I left off and get back into the swing of things in iPhoto.
I've Googled like crazy and haven't found someone doing exactly what I'm trying to accomplish so any help with my current situation is greatly appreciated. I've also posted this on my blog http://cdevroe.com/notes/back-to-iphoto/cvdevroe
2) Reorganizing my keywords in Aperture (since I had them set up in iPhoto) is impossible. When I bring up the Keywords HUD, I’m greeted with all of my keywords residing subordinately to a master keyword of 'iPhoto'.
Bear with me, my terminology may not be right. I'm heading in the opposite direction, and one of the advantages i see to Aperture is that I've got the same advantages in Keyword management as I have with KM in iPhoto.
Have you tried re-organising them using the control bar: Below the thumbs there's a drop down menu, by default it shows Photo Descriptors. Click on it and Select 'Edit Buttons'. You can merrily re-organise your Keywords in this window, and even have your changes reflected in live in the HUD.
As to the Spotlight searching, I'm afraid someone else will need to help on that one. Personally - and it's a regular on the iPhoto forums - I've never had much luck getting Spotlight to search within iPhoto for keywords, apart, of course, from using the search window in the iPhoto Window. I suspect a system-based search of iPhoto keywords is simply not possible.
What I thought about doing was this: 1) Somehow restore the originals for the almost 25,000 photos into the place where iPhoto thinks they should be.
That will work, but they'll need to be exactly as they were.
2) Move the entire library to my external firewire drive.
Easily done, after you've copied it over launch iPhoto holding down the option (or alt) key and choose 'Locate'. Navigate to the new location and that''ll be your default iPhoto Library Folder thereafter.
3) Import the remaining images that I've taken since switching to Aperture into iPhoto.
That should work too.
But the key is, can you return the iPhoto Library Folder exactly as it was, otherwise you'll need to create and populate a new library - and that will inevitable mean losing your keywords in iPhoto too.
FWIW, I need to keep iPhoto going for others in the household who are daunted by Aperture. My solution is a referenced library pointing towards the iPhoto Library Folder / Originals folder.

I can buy a 1T hd to store photos and videos to, but would need a second one to back that up as well? I guess I need to know how to get aperture and iphoto to keep my photos on a larger drive and how to keep both the imac and that larger hd backed up. Note- we can't get DSL, so off site back up isn't a viable option.
Move your photo and video libraries to an external HD. Apple explains how to do this in:

Need help with backed up photos-now cannot view..?
Using iphoto 6, super duper, seagate external hd. Drive has already been set-up and backed up several times-been working well........until.......
Last night, I saw that out of 120gb I have about 5gb left on my G4.!
"decided" to back-up iphotos and "delete" some on my G4 to reserve more space.
Now, if I go to the external and click on pictures folder, I can see all of my originals folders (2002-2008), but when I open iphoto, they are not in iphoto.?
On my G4, it's the same thing, but worse! When I tried to delete my photos, I was holding the apple key and selecting multiple items, then dragging them to the trash.......I'm sure you have done this yourself before, but It drug them a little, then them "dropped" into other places in the same folder-NOT the trash! They are in all different places in the pictures folder, and not in the same places they used to be......!!!
I've read about "re-constructing" the library. Will this work? I do not want to do any more damage. They are there-I know it!
So, I drug the entire library of "originals" back into iphoto, but ALMOST all of the way through (got down to 100 out of 8,000 photos) and got a message that says "an error occured while trying to save your iphoto library. Make sure you have enough hard disk space and that iphoto is able to access the iphoto library folder."
I look at my hd space, and I have about 500mb left....?
What does this mean? I THINK I don't have enough hd space to do it now. What the **** should I do? Getting a little frustrated at this point. I am off tomorrow and want to get it fixed up.
8,000 of my childrens photos is nothing to "play" with. I can't believe I was so stupid with these. These mean the world to me, and I'm pretty sure they are still there. Obviously they are because about 60gb of hd space is being used up with my photos according to the program "what size?" I downloaded to use.
Where to start?
First, thanks for reading this, and second---could someone help me out some?
Could someone please post a link to help me to correctly partition the seagate external hd, and get these photos backed up?
Also, what is the best way to free up my hd space on my G4? I also have a mini with 60gb of storage if I need additional hd space. In addition, I have an iphone, itouch, imac, 3 nanos, ipod hi-fi,,,,,,,Obviously, I LOVE my Apple products, but don't have enough knowledge to operate them.....kinda sad, huh? This is the iPhoto '08 forum (version 7.x.x) and you may very well get incorrect answers to questions about other versions - it would be better to post in the iPhoto 6 forum - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1116

NEED HELP BADLY! USING IMAC G5 AND CAN NOT INSTALL
I'm not too great with computers but I know how to install
programs easily and I've installed Flash in the past.
Today it seemed for no reason my flashplayer just stopped
working.
So I went to reinstall it
It succesfully installed but still didnt work on any flash
types.
So I deleted all the possible flash files on my computer and
then tried installing again
And it gave me an error message saying: 1008:9,-5000
I don't know what this means and I don't know how to fix it
and would extremely appreciate someone helping me out...
I use an Imac G5 (not intel core)
My main browser is Safari but I will use Firefox if needed
If you could just send an email to [email protected]
I'll get back to you as soon as I can
THANKYOU IN ADVANCE!!!!!!!!I've used the Free Version of SuperDuper for 3 - 4 years to make a bootable backup of my MacBook. It always makes a perfect copy. I don't use the paid version of SD, but from what I gather the main advantage of the paid version is you can make a back up of only those files that have changed since the last back up using Smart Update or Copy Newer. This takes only a few minutes rather than the 1 1/4 hours it takes me to do a complete back up using the free version. SD won't let you use Smart Update or Copy Newer unless you pay.
From your post, you want to copy a few of your User files to an external drive? I'm not sure why you need SuperDuper to do this. Why not just drag those files to the external drive? Sure, you're not able to schedule this for an automatic back up, but I'm not sure that's what SD is for. However, it looks like they have shell scripting to do other things, and there is a selection for included scripts under Options. There may be something in there for you. -
Need help with workflow: New iMac with SSD & HDD and Pegasus Promise
Hello everyone! I've decided to upgrade my iMac and ordered an i7 with the SSD and HDD drive configuration as well as the Pegasus Promise 12TB drive. I've been researching as to what's the best way to manage both the SSD and HDD drives and I really haven't seen an end-all answer. Now with the purchase of the Pegasus Promise, I'm more confused as to what's the best approach to take. Here are my thoughts:
1. Use the SSD as the boot and application drive and the HDD for the users folder.
2. Use the SSD as the boot and application drive, the HDD for the users folder, and photos and pics onto the Pegasus.
3. Use the SSD as the boot and application drive, the Pegasus for the users folder, and the HDD for ???
4. Just use the Pegasus drive as the boot drive and use it for everything. (being that it's a RAID drive, then all my files are backed-up already)
Majority of my space-filling files are my iTunes folder, tons of pictures from using Aperture, and iMovie for videos.
Thanks in advance for everyone's input and help!I'm working on a similar premise. i7, SSD, HDD, Promise raid, etc.
I'm nowhere near as savvy as a lot of the people here, but after a lot of research I decided that focusing on how the Pegasus gets configured is the most important for me. My concerns are for a business in photography, btw.
I can't budget the 12TB unit so I'm trying to make the most of either the R4-8tb or th R6-6tb.
I'm planning to launch the applications from the SSD. I will use the Mac HDD for typical non-photographic files, iTunes (mine's not so big), and standard fair. This is all backed up via Time Machine to a 3TB Western Digital MyBook for the time being.
As for the Pegasus, I believe I've settled on: taking an R6-6tb unit, placing the 6th drive in my firesafe from the moment I get it. Configuring the remaining 5 drives in a level 5 setup. Leaves me 4TB to get started and buys me a few succesful quarters to plan on daisy chaining another unit when memory is needed. This way, I may not have maximum possible drive space, but I've got a replacement drive on the ready should I experience a drive-failure. Then, I'm not sitting on pins and needles while I await a replacement; they'll simply be shipping me a new "spare".
I still need to actually speak to someone @ Promise to make sure this will work, as I stated: I"m learning as I go here. If this is an acceptable Raid setup, you would have 8TB available to you.
Personally, I am far more comfortable running systems in series and building the size as I go (to a point) than putting so much data in a single array.
[Edit] The raid bay is mainly for the Lightroom catalog, and I use standard external drives to store redundant backups off-site (1TB at a time). -
Help Am New To Apples And Need HELP With Wireless Conenction Imac Mini
Hi
First time here, i think i am running myself in circles here reading hundreds od different threads and pdf's.
What i want to do is share my broadband connection with the Imac intel dual core (Wifes), My PC and an XBOX 360. Have the pc and the xbox already connected to the router which is a belkin wirelss pre-n router. the Pc is connected by cable to back of router port 1, the xbox 360 is wireless to the router.
What i want to know is do i need to get anything else for the imac to connect it to the router as it says it has airport extreme wireless networking.
My way of looking at it is that i neeed nothing else and it should just see a wirelless network from the router and connect to that, is that right?
If i am way off do i need something else to plug into the router to make the apple go wireless.
I haven't trierd it yet as we only just got it (the mac) and like to be in charge of all the facts first before setting networks up
MAny thanks for looking and thanks in advance of any helpMy way of looking at it is that i neeed nothing else
and it should just see a wirelless network from the

Need help reverting back to SL from Lion. MacBook won't boot up!!!
I am hoping someone can help with this issue. I am trying to revert back to Snow Leopard after upgrading to Lion on my MacBook, but it doesn't seem to be working. After upgrading to Lion, I found out the hard way that Quicken 2007 no longer works. Since I use this regularly, I need to at least export my data out of there to use in a Lion-friendly program. However, it seems the only way that I can do this is to down-grade back to Snow Leopard first. I have been using Time Machine for regular backups for over a year now, and my most recent backup was right before upgrading to Lion.
Here is what I have done so far:
- I booted up in Restore Mode and selected the backup on my Time Capsule that I wanted to restore from. I then selected my HD to restore to. The restore took a little over 2 hours, and it appeared to have been successful. However, upon restarting, it seems to lock up on the initial screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel.
- I then booted up with the Snow Leopard disc and tried reloading Snow Leopard, but it wouldn't let me erase the HD. I used the Disk Utility to check the HD, and it appears to be functional. For some reason, I am not able to eject the Snow Leopard disc.
- After rebooting in Restore Mode again (the Snow Leopard disc is still inserted), I again tried restoring from a backup on my Time Capsule. It again took a little over 2 hours, and appeared to be successful. However, after rebooting, it again locks up on the initial screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel.
This all took up about 7 hours of my time last night, and I finally gave up. I was able to power down my MacBook, but the Snow Leopard disc is still in it, since it would not eject.
Before upgrading to Lion, I downloaded and installed all available updates. The last Time Machine backup was done after these updates.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can successfully get Snow Leopard back on my MacBook?OK, the install disc ejected this time. I was finally able to reload Snow Leopard successfully, however, it wouldn't let me restore from my latest TM backup. It gave me some sort of message about the case not being correct. (I guess I should have written down the exact message).
Anyway, I then rebooted in restore mode with the SL disc, and selected my last TM backup before the Lion install, and almost 3 hours later, it tells me that the system was successfully restored. It then told me I needed to restart the system, which I did. However, it still locks up on the screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel. Should I have removed the SL disc first before restarting?
Considering all of the above, it appears that there is nothing wrong with my HD, which leaves me wondering what the actual issue is?
macjack wrote:
IF you can erase, my preference at this point would to do a clean install from your SL Install disk and then in SetUp Assistant choose to migrate from your TM volume .
Maybe I should do this? How do I go about erasing my HD? When I did the install of SL, I noticed that I still had some of my old stuff (i.e. all of my iTunes music), so obviously, the HD was not erased before the install. Once I have erased the HD and done the clean install, how do I get to the SetUp Assistant to migrate from my TM volume? Will this restore everything back to the way it was before the upgrade to Lion? -
Need help retrieving 'backed-up' iWeb files
In anticipation of iweb going away, I backed up my iweb files to an external drive. Now, having purchased a brand new imac desktop computer, it did not come with iweb software. So, how do i "restore" any of my iweb files to the new imac desktop so that I can then view them, enjoy them, or upload them to a new server?
Attach your hard drive to your new Mac and then copy the files over or just drop and drag. If you have saved your published iWeb files, then you can open them in any browser that you have by opening the file and then clicking on any of the html pages - just double click and Safari or your chosen browser will open them.
To upload to your server, then you'll need to download an ftp client like Cyberduck or Yummy ftp and upload to your server using this.
Other than this and if you want to make any alterations to your files, then you needed to back up your domain.sites files from your old Mac that you should have transferrred to your new Mac. These domain.sites files can be found under your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites. You'll also need a copy of iWeb on your new Mac - you can do this by using the installation discs from your old Mac and placing it on your new mac or if you still want iWeb go to Amazon and search for a copy of the iLife 11 boxed set and iWeb is included in this. -
Need help installing OS on iMac with no OS
Hi,
I just bought an iMac G4 15" Flat panel 800 mhz from the University of Wisconsin Madison. They surplus computers often but they have to strip all software off including operating systems. They have reassured me that this one works it just needs to have the OS installed.
I have a full install family pack for OS X 10.1 (for powermac g4's) and have been trying to install it by holding down the "c" key after the chime. The problem is that the keyboard lights up initially but then it acts dead. I've tested the keyboard with other computers and it works fine. The usb hubs work fine too. I believe it's because it doesn't have an operating system that nothing is registering. I just get the beautiful flashing question mark face. The drive is CD-RW/DVD-Rom and it definitely sounds like it's working. I've gone into open firmware and had to do "eject cd" because the cd won't eject when pressed on the keyboard (because like i said earlier, the keyboard acts dead). this type of iMac doesn't seem to have any way to open the cd other than the keyboard. I'm ultimately going to put Tiger on it since i have a family pack upgrade but i need to get the first OS on before i can do anything. I'm considering using firewire target mode and copying something from one of my other mac's just to get it started.
If anyone can help, it would be very appreciated! I have searched the discussions and when people have asked how to install the OS respondents simply say "it's probably a stolen computer" or "it probably doesn't work". I know this computer is legit - it came from a computer lab at the UW-Madison. Thank you!!"I wasn't trying to install the Powerbook software but the PowerMac software that i use on my G4's. The iMac says it's a Powermac G4 iMac so i thought it would work."
No, same difference. If those disks are not for the G4 iMac, they will not work.
I would just wait for the Tiger disks to arrive.
BTW, if you have less than 512MB of RAM, I would strongly recommend that you upgrade to at least that much. Tiger is a pretty RAM hungry OS and will want at least 512MB. -
Mavericks *****! Need help going back to 10.8
Well I cant seem to get past the relentless imail, app store, preview issues of the lovely 10.9. The imail app since installing mavericks freezes up, will not show your message on the side of the pane, and wont open up messages to view. This is not all the time, but quite frequently. If you double click on a message to open up, it will make a febile attempt to, then shut off, and produce an error message. I already called support and they told me to reinstall, which I did. Worked for two days then back to having the same issues.
This is both on my iMac and Air
This is also affecting the other mac os apps. I cant even get preview to open up! I just tried to open up the app store and it wont even open. Ugh....this is terrible to say the least. I've tried about every **** thing I can think of and nothing is working. Our IT guy says I'm not the only one with severe issues relating to Mavericks. I feel like I'm back at the old windows days again.
How can I look at my time machine backups and see which one has 10.8 on it so I can reinstall to replace of mavericks? I'm of course open to keeping this POS if I can resolve these new glitches.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated! This is the error message imail is giving to me. Sorry its pretty long but I didnt want to miss any details

I need help with Backing up Music
I need to back up my songs because I got an error message telling me to uninstall and reinstall I-Tunes. However, when I tried to back up my files on CD's it didn't work right. Some of the music was garbled........Am I doing something wrong? Should I choose Audio CD or MP3 CD or Data DVD? My goal is to make sure I save my music to reinstall on the new version of I-Tunes but, it would be nice to be able to play the CD's in my stereo as well. Thanks for any help that I receive!
I meant to add that - Back up disc is not anywhere in the Files sections, not under LIbrary, nowhere.

Need Help Reformatting Leopard on Imac
Hey guys,
I sold my Imac so i am wanting to do a clean install of Leo for the new owner and to get my stuff off it. I have everything backed up and was about to do the reformatting but I have 3 discs and not sure which to do first. I have the two discs (one that says Disc 1 and the other that says Disc 2) but my confusion is the Leopard "CPU Drop in DVD"... what do I do with that one? Do I use it for something first or is that just a tutorial of Leopard?
thanks
jaredIf you have a +CPU Drop In+ Leopard disc, your Mac probably came with Tiger pre-installed. So the Disc 1 and 2 set are your Tiger discs.
If you want to install Leopard for the new owner, you should be able to use the +CPU Drop In+ Leopard disc to do it. However, if you erase the drive securely first (to remove your personal data), it may not allow you to re-install Leopard directly on an empty drive; it may look for an existing system (that's the main difference between that disc and a retail Leopard installation disc). But you can try it; once you get into Installer, it may let you do whatever you want. So insert the Leopard disc and start up from it.
To clear off your personal data securely, when you get to the first Installer screen, go up to the menu bar and select to run Disk Utility from under the Utilities menu. In Disk Utility, select the internal drive in the sidebar (be sure to select the DRIVE and not the volume indented under the drive). Go to the Erase tab. Click the +Security Options+ button. Select to +Zero Out Data+ and OK. Back on the main screen, Erase the drive. +Zero Out Data+ will write zeroes to all sectors to make your data unrecoverable. Note: This procedure will take some time to complete.
After it completes, quit Disk Utility to go back to Installer. Perform a default installation and allow the iMac to restart to the fresh system. When you get to the setup screen, shut down.
If you cannot do the above with your Leopard disc, use Disc 1 of the Tiger set instead. After Tiger gets installed, if you promised Leopard pre-installed, you'll need use the Leopard disc to do the upgrade. Otherwise, I would just leave it with the original Tiger installation and let the new owner do the upgrades. Be sure to include the all three of those discs with the iMac.
EDIT: Actually, it may be best to install the original Tiger installation off those two discs first. There are some bundled apps (such as an older version of iLife) that would not get re-installed off the Leopard disc. If you (or the new owner) then upgrades to Leopard, ALL of the originally installed software will be there.
