Need Help w/ Playlist

I cannot make playlists for some reason. When I drag a song from my library to one of my playlists there is a circle sign with a diagonal slash through it and it won't copy into the folder. Right clicking on a song does not give me to option to add it to a playlist either. Any suggestions to fix this?

Did you create the playlist with File > New Playlist? That would make it a regular Playlist.
If by any chance you are talking about a Smart Playlist, rather than a regular Playlist, you cannot add stuff to it, since Smart Playlists fill up automatically according to their criteria.

Need help getting playlist into flash drive

Hi friends ... so sorry to bother ... but I need some help ... my iPod Shuffle isn't compatible with my new cars audio system .... so I just bought my first usb flash drive (sandisk 8gig) ...I inserted the flash drive and it mounted right away on the desktop ... I just dragged all of the albums I wanted from my iTunes library to the flash drive icon .... I double clicked the flash icon and all the songs and every artist that I dragged into it showed up .... I inserted the flash into my car's usb port- and it played wonderfullyu... until I clicked on the menu and saw that instead of the 900 or so songs I dragged into the flash drive- only about 18 showed up in the audio systems menu ... only about 5 artists instead of the 30 or 40 that I loaded .... the flash drive is 8gig capacity and my entire library is only about 5 gigs .... I emptied all of the mpg's from my flash drive- threw out the trash ... and re-loaded everything again .... once again, when the transfer was finished , everything I dragged into the flash icon was there- every tune played as it shoud when clicked within the desk-mounted flash drive .... but when I inserted again into my cars usb port- once again only a fraction of what was on the flash drive showed up on my screen ...
Please tell me what I'm doing wrong ...The flash drive never appeared in my iTunes window anywhere and under "devices" there was no option highlighted- maybe this is a clue to what I haven't done right? this was the first time I ever used a usb flash drive..I didn't format or anything else -when the flash icon showed up on my desktop - I just intuitively dragged my playlist into the icon - everything appeared to be in there ... but didn't end up in my car's audio system .... please advise .... please advise as simply as possible .... much thanks in advance ....

Ther flash drive will not be a recognized Device to iTunes. It will simply be another drive. You can add files to it by drag-n-drop, as you correctly did.
Most likely, you have many files in AAC audio format, and your car player is one of the many that can play MP3, but not AAC.

Need help with playlists and iTunes Match

I recently subscribed to Match, and once the music was all synced, my playlists were gone from my iPad2 (version 6.0.1). If I create a new playlist on the iPad, it will sync to my Mac, and all will be available on the Mac, but none sync back to my iPad. Do I have to recreate all new playlists for the iPad? Thank you. To add to the above, only the new playlist folder on iPad2 will sync to iMac...it will be empty though, no songs.

Need help understanding playlists

Hi folks - sorry for this basic newbie question but I couldn't find a definitive answer seaching previous discussions. Having never set up an iPod before, but having quite a few songs in my iTunes folders, I noticed that many songs are duplicated -- they automatically appear in my Recently Added playlist, perhaps also in the preset 90's Music playlist, and then again in my own artist-specific playlists, etc. Since my understanding is that iPod only updates through playlists rather than by individual song title, is the same song going to be taking up 2, 3, etc. times the space on my iPod? Should I delete the playlists that came standard when I first launched iTunes? Seems like a waste of space to have the same song repeating in multiple playlists...

If you have only one copy of the song, that is, multiple playlists pointing to a single file (which is what you describe) then the iPod will only copy the file once, and have multiple pointers to it.

I sync my iPad. Now everything is messed up playlists and music are gone. Weird stuff showed up. And now I can't find the option to delete or make new playlists. 6.1.2 is my newest version!! NEED HELP!!

So I don't sync my iPad very often. My dad and I share a computer. And I decided to do it the other day. I am pretty sure I did it all correctly selecting music that I wanted not deleting playlists but it seems to be that they are gone. And music I didn't want has appeared. And now I don't have an option (with this new iOS 6.1.2) to make new playlists or edit music I don't want out.
I know I need help figuring those two things out 1 how to make a play list. There isn't a "add" button anymore in that screen I have a "you have no playlist"with a button underneath that says "go to iTunes Store" why I would need the store for that, I do not know.
Then in the songs, artists, albums sections where you used to be able to hit "edit" button to delete the music you have that you don't want. I don't seem to be able to do anything at all to get rid of the random music I have.
I need help. I know my iPad fairly well but I am not super savvy with it either.

Is there a "New" button at the top right of the Playlists section of Music?
There is no Edit button to delete music, swipe sideways on the song to reveal the delete button. Tap and hold on the artwork in Artists and albums to reveal the (X) button to delete. Or connect the iPad back up to iTunes on the computer and check your sync settings for music to ensure you are syncing the right content.

Use View > View Options, and set 'Sort By" to "Manual Order."
Then you will be able to drag-n-drop songs up and down the list.

Select all the songs in the playlist concerned. Ctrl + A is the normal shortcut.
Select File > Print from the top menu
Select the option of Song List in the dialog box
Click Print

Thanks for your prompt response, however I have first seen it now. I have placed an active SIM card in the iPhone turned it off and on. It now says SIM locked, please write access code. The problem is I don't remember the password. When I connect it to iTunes it tell me that I have to write the password before it can be used with iTunes...... Do you have any good ideas? I need help putting Classical Music CDs into iTunes

I need help - this question has lots of subquestions, sorry.
I have found just a few discussions that deal with this but I am still confused. Forgive me if I get wordy and misuse technical terms - I am trying to learn this thing...
I'm an iPod newbie and haven't a clue on the best way to organize my many, many classical CDs that I'd like to put onto my iPod Classic 160G. I'd also like to do this with as little fussing around as possible since there are lots of CDs I've got to deal with.
If each CD is a separate entry [album?] in the playlist and titled with composer name first [ex Bach, Brandenburg Concertos, Titov conductor] I'll have several playlist entries with the same titles, but different contents. No problem really.
But, should I separate it further, by having each concerto [say] be a separate entry in the playlist - without having to download the CD again. [I've just practiced on a few CDs but I imagine it being a problem if I had to download each CD several times - once for each work] Does it make sense to leave gaps between movements? [I'm not finding a way to remove gaps, though I have seen that suggested somewhere]
And when I come to play the pieces, if I start playing a work in a playlist, will the iPod keep going from one movement to the next as it makes its way through the playlist - or will it stop at each movement and wait for me to tell it what to do next?
Advanced Settings - are these the best? I'll be listening to music on an airplane using noise cancelling headphones and at destination attaching iPod to portable speakers to listen to music in hotel rooms.
General: Keep iTunes Music folder organized - unchecked? [not sure what this means or does or doesn't do]
Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library - checked?
Importing: AAC encoder? High quality -128 kbps?

Thank you so much for your help. You have sorted out a lot of problems for me. I've tried to go through what you wrote, add some more info and I have asked a few more questions below-
I re-ripped at 256. I too have the 160GB classic so it's good to know that it will take 10,000 tracks as lossless - now I have to re-rip again! I actually hadn't anticipated using the iPod with anything other than our high quality noise canceling airplane headphones, our cheap, portable travel speakers for hotel rooms and our Cambridge sound speakers for our cabin. It's that last set of speakers that makes me think I should follow you advice and go with lossless.
QUESTION #1 - When I re-rip and do an automatic sync, will the tracks at 256 automatically be replaced by the bigger lossless ones with the same name or should I delete everything from the iPod and begin anew?

QUESTION #2 If the Album column is highlighted and the movements are in the correct order in iTunes in the playlist, will they stay that way in the iPod?

In iTunes, the composer column which is imported from the internet search for info on the CDs gives composer with first name first and I can't find a place in iTunes to reverse this. QUESTION #3 Is there a place in iTunes to change the order of the composers' name in the composer column?

QUESTION #5 "dedicated disk"? as in hard drive? I have been using SuperDuper to back up my Mac to an external HD; I plan to put a copy of the iTunes folder onto yet another HD where I keep copies of all our photos as well.
"never change it"? I noticed a misspelling "Haendel" from the on-line CD/track info - no problem in fixing that - right? Since you later say you do change info, what is it you are never changing?
QUESTION #6 - "Disk N of M capability" - what? Where do I find this option? And when you say "for multiple CD albums, don't include the cd number in the album name." Where? when you put the CD into a playlist entry? or just in the list of music in the album column - do you change the listing?
ONE FINAL QUESTION - when I turn on the iPod when it's not attached to headphones or speakers, and I'm just looking at the screen to see settings or how the syncing worked, the iPod appears to begin playing something as soon as I turn it on. THIS IS A STUPID QUESTION, but I can't find the answer, how to I get it to stop playing without turning the iPod itself off???

Before you sync your iPhone make sure that all the music that was synced to your phonereviously has been copied to your iTunes on the new MacBook Pro. Then when you connect your phone you will be able to either sync all music or select only those playlists that you want on the phone.

I guess you have a problem with the inability of mx to play folders. i have used folders as playlists since i got my first computer since i just want to throw the folder with the files over to another media for playing. Not to be able to play tis is truly annoying.

So why can I not get iTunes working well?? It now takes at least 10 secs for any operation to be completed!
That is just plain evil. But I am sure I could do something to help.
All the music is on an 2T external drive.

Brigancook, is the library database on the external or just the media? iTunes reevaluates smart playlists and rewrites its database after every action on the library. I've found this can make a library half that size, with a lot of smart playlists, quite sluggish. That said I'm aware part of my problem is aging hardware. Having the database on the internal drive may improve performance if it is currently on the external.
I'd expect to see an exponential relationship between size and response time which may explain what you see. Cutting down on the number of smart playlists might help. If we're really lucky the long awaited iTunes 11 might have streamlined some of the background processes as well as cleaning up the front end.
