Need help: W520 connecting 2 external monitors

Hi,
I just bought two new monitors and trying to connect both of them with W520. Both monitors are 1920*1080 and have VGA, DVI, and DP. (No HDMI)
I know one solution that probably going to work is to connect one with displayport and the other with VGA.
However, I really hope I could use digital signals for both of them since VGA is still not completely as good as displayport or DVI.
As the displayport on W520 is the only digital output, I called the technical support to ask if I could use a dp->dvi converter and a dvi splitter to connect both monitors. The technical support confirmed this. But I still don't know if I should use a dp->dual-link dvi or just a regular dp->dvi.
I've also read the reviews of USB->DVI adapters. The common problem they have is that videos could not be smoothly played.
I don't want to buy the dock or an active converter since they cost too much. So, please suggest what is the most economic solution if I want to get 2 digital output from W520.
Thanks!

[Reviving this slightly old topic because it still comes up on Google searches ...]
I wanted to report my successes with 3 screens - the laptop screen and two external monitors - with a W520 quad-core and a MiniDock Plus 3 - 4338 - 90 Watt.  Both external monitors are connected to the MiniDock with DisplayPort cables.
a) Win7 Ultimate was easy to set up with the drivers 83de42ww (8.17.12.7593/8.15.10.2538, dated 2011-12-14).  BIOS in Optimus mode, but disabled OS detection.  I can use the Windows 7 "screen resolution" applet to configure the resolution and relative location of the monitors.  Only issue:  I have to do that each time I dock - otherwise it boots/revives from sleep using only the laptop's screen.  I never use the Intel or NVidia consoles to do anything.
b) Windows Server 2008 R2 was MUCH harder to get going - largely because I was doing it six months later and using the latest drivers.  The drivers in 83de44ww (8.17.12.7658/8.14.10.2538, dated 2012-04-20) just do not work for this purpose - I could not get all three screens going no matter what I tried.  So I uninstalled the NVidia drivers and Intel drivers (in that order!) and installed 83de42ww (as in (a) above) and now it works fine.  Even better: it remembers when I dock to light up all three displays without me having to adjust anything.  To get it to work, though, I had to use the NVidia control panel to set screen resolutions.  After that, the Windows "screen resolution" applet now works fine.
c) Back in November when I was trying to get 4 screens going I found a Lenovo PDF that described all kinds of display configurations for the W520.  Can't find it online now.  Anyway, it certainly implied that 4 screens (3 external) worked, but I couldn't get it to happen.  Now I'm glad you've pointed to this specification that contains the following remarkable facts:  First, that you can get 4 monitors working with the 170W MiniDock Plus, and you can also get it working with the 90W MiniDock Plus (which is what I have) ONLY IF you've got a DUAL-core, not a quad-core (I have a quad-core).  Very interesting!  Perhaps the quad core sucks up just enough extra energy that the NVidia chip isn't left with enough to power 3 video signals.  Unfortunate.
d) I don't know why I have the 90W MiniDock Plus - Can anyone advise me?  I've got a 170W brick that says it delivers 8.5 amps at 20V, that's 170W alright.  But the bottom of the MiniDock says it accepts 4.5 amps at 20V, thats 90W.  So did they just ship me the wrong MiniDock with the right brick?

  • Need help indentifying the external monitor port on my MacBook 2,1 Notebook.

I’m having trouble indentifying the external monitor port. Its larger than the newer ports that are on the later MacBook and MacBook Pro it has 2 rolls of teeth and is taller then the later models. I would like to buy an adapter to hookup another monitor but nobody seems to know what i'm talking about. My Model is a MacBook 2,1  with an 2.16 Intel core duo.
It is a white model. Below is a phot of the port.. Any help would be great...

  • Need help in connecting Dell Monitor to Dell Inspiron

I recently purchased an Inspiron 17R laptop to reduce the high usage of my Precision M6600 laptop. A Dell U2312HM monitor was used with the Precision as a second monitor and I want to use it with the newly acquired Inspiron system as a second monitor. The video ports differ on both of these computers and I have not been successful in getting the monitor to work with the Inspiron. While the Precision uses an older VGA connection, the newer Inspiron uses an HDMI connection. To further complicate the issue, the monitor has several ports for connecting to a video output source which includes VGA, DisplayPort, DVI and ports for upstream and downstream USB connections, but not including HDMI. I used a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter cable in attempting to connect the Inspiron to the monitor but could not produce a picture on the monitor screen. This monitor continues to respond correctly when attached to the Precision via the VGA cable & port so I'm confused as to why I've had no luck in tying the monitor to the new system with the DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. How can the Inspiron 17R be successfully connected to the Dell U2312HM monitor?

Computer HDMI out cannot upconvert to a monitor DP (DisplayPort) in using a straight cable.
What you bought is designed to do the opposite =
Computer DP out to monitor HDMI in
Regardless of port, you will only ever get 1920x1080 on the U2313HM. Return that cable. Purchase an HDMI to DVI cable =
Computer HDMI out --> HDMI to DVI cable --> U2313HM DVI in

  • Need help connecting external monitor

My brother needs help with connecting an external monitor to his 20" iMac G5. He has the adapter with the standard monitor port, and when plugged in, the monitor duplicates the iMac screen. His question is, how can he set it so that the desktop is extended, instead of duplicated? I, myself, have a MacBook and two months ago I used my adapter to connect a projector, and I remember an option where I could choose between duplicate and extended desktop, and right now I tried to find it on my MacBook and well as my Intel iMac and I can't find the option, and neither can he.
    Please help, thanks!

The iMac G5 can only mirror the internal display unless you hack the firmware.
Display options like that only appear when you connect a display which is why you can't see them on the MB at the moment.

  • How connect External monitor to iMac?

How connect External monitor to iMac?

How to do that depends on the iMac variant you have. iMacs have been in continuous production since 1998 in four broad families that are not 100 percent alike in behavior.
Please look at the iMac images and descriptions in the links on this site:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
and tell us what variant you believe you have.
iMacs from the first through third-generations (G3, G4, and G5 processors) that support an external monitor were not set up to do anything other than "mirroring"--you see on the external exactly what is on the built-in display.
Your description sounds like you have a newer iMac than this forum covers because, starting with the Intel iMacs in 2006, external monitors were allowed to do both mirroring and "extended desktop." The latter is what I believe you are seeing.
Try this first: press the F7 key. On many Macs capable fo using external monitors, this was a shortcut to toggle between mirrored and extended display. If your keyboard has an "fn" modifier key, you may need to press that to get the F7 key to work.
If you have an intel-powered iMac I can ask the Hosts to move you to that forum, which is much more active than this one which is for pre-2006 iMacs.

  • Deperately need help setting up external midi devices

I need help setting up external midi devices.....Motu828...Midi express...RolandXV3080....Motif rack.......HELP

Theres not really much to setup. Assuming your synths are connected to the MIDI Express already..
In Logic, make a new MIDI track. On the left hand side in the track inspector, among the parameters you'll see an option for MIDI Port and Channel. Just pick which port the track is going to, set the channel and device id and play (And be glad you never had to deal with setting up the old Environment window in Logic 5 and below).
If you really wanna get into it and have all your MIDI ports named after the synth thats connected to it, open up Audio Midi Setup, create a device icon for each synth you have and draw the cables from each device to whatever port its connected to on the midi interface's icon.
Then in Logic everytime you pick your MIDI port on your track, instead of MIDI Port 1, MIDI Port 2, etc.,
it would be labelled XV-3080, Motif Rack, and so on.. I dont think theres anyway to do this within Logic itself (you can change the labels on your audio ins and outs, but not MIDI as far as I can recall)..
If youre talking about having access to patch names and whatnot like Digital Performer and Cubase let you do, Logic doesnt use the xml patch lists everyone else does. The above steps are pretty much all there is to be done as far as MIDI.
Heres my Audio Midi Setup window for reference.
Now when I select MIDI Port 1 in Logic its named MWXT, port 2 is SR-16, etc..

  • TS1398 I need help getting connected to our home wifi.

I need help getting connected to our home wifi. I've reset network settings, iPhone, and router  but the error "unable to join network" keeps coming up. I also double checked the password. Please help

    Other possibilities:
Your router firmware is out of date. Check the manufacturer's website for an update
You have MAC (Media Access Control) filtering enabled on the router, that restricts access to "known" devices and the new iPhone is not on the table of known devices
Your router has a setting limiting the number of simultaneous allowed devices
Your routers SSID ("name") is still the default (e.g., LINKSYS, DLINK, NETGEAR, etc). Your phone has encountered other routers with the same name as you have traveled, and the phone is confused as to which router is the real one. If your router's name is still the default you should change it.

  • HP Laptop+Dock - Need to use 2 external Monitors

Setup:  HP HDX 18t with HP xb4 docking station.
Issue:  with the computer docked and the lid closed, how can I get dual external monitors to function in extended mode?  The problem lies in the cable that attaches the dock is too close to the laptop's vga port so I cant use both, the vga port on the laptop + the one on the dock.  I tried a StarTech USB2DVI but it wasnt stable, and died after only 2 days.  I am willing to replace the docking stations if need be for one that supports dual monitors directly, but hp consumer products doesnt have one.  How about using HDMI to DVI cable/adapter plus the video out on the dock?  What would happen to the external speaker jacks if I did this?  Anyone have a solution that has been verified?  HELP!

I think you might need a VGA  adapter that splits the connections into two. Not sure where they can be bought, however.

  • Need help setting up external hard drive for FCE project

    Hi folks,
Basically I am looking at making a 20-30 minute video this summer of my motocross adventures and what not and have equipped myself with an iMac (2.93 GHZ Core2Duo 640GB 4GB) and of course, FCE. I have tried smaller projects before (ranging in length between 20 seconds to upwards of a few minutes) but have noticed an overall decline in computer speed which I am under the impression is being caused by the 10s of GBs of video project files and what not that seem to be scrawled away within my computer. Before I made any videos, my computer was sitting around 560 GBs of free space. Since making maybe 3-4 videos (50/50 iMovie and FCE) its down below 400GBs. I'm not sure whether it's the raw video files or the projects themselves that are so large, but it's slightly frustrating. Is there any sort of software (either third party or apple) that can look at your hard drive and tell you exactly where all the biggest files are? I'll post this question in the iMac forum as I realize this is for FCE, but I thought if anyone knew of one it would be extremely helpful.
Anyways, I have a SimpleDrive 320GB external HD that I plan to use as my external for making this project within FCE and would like some help in terms of how to set it up with FCE, what are the best settings etc. It is currently formatted with Windows, so I will also need help in setting it up for a Mac. I do have about 120GBs used on it already and was also wondering if I could keep this when re-formatting, but I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to that.
Sorry for the long-winded post; any information on this or something related would be fantastic. Thanks.

Yes, you can use your external HD with FCE ... provided it is formatted as +Mac OS Extended+ and is connected via FireWire.
You will need to back up any data that is on the drive that you want to keep. Before reformatting it. Formatting erases everything that is on the drive.
Use Disk Utility (located in your +Applications > Utilities+ folder) to format the drive.
After formatting the drive, go into +FCE > System Settings+ and change your FCE scratch disk location to the external drive.

  • Trouble connecting external monitor to new MacBook

Just today I bought a new MacBook with Leopard, and also bought an external monitor (LG brand). I hooked it up as directed: an adapter from the mini-dvi port to a dvi cable, and the other end of the dvi cable in the back of the monitor. When I turned it on, the monitor was displaying the background picture on my desktop and the dock, but none of the folders and documents on my desktop were showing. Also, the cursor wasn't showing. I tried opening a document in Word, and that did not show up on the monitor. I called the company and they said the monitor should work with a Mac, but that I should get help from Apple because none of them are familiar with Macs and it is probably something I need to change in the display settings on the MacBook. I've never used an external monitor before, and know nothing about this. Do you think I need to return this monitor, or could someone tell me what to try to make it mirror the desktop? Thank you.

Your monitor is working exactly like it is supposed to in extended desktop. Nothing will be on it unless you drag something to it. Open Displays in *System Preferences*. With the external monitor hooked up a control screen for each display will show on the displays. Use Arrangement to drag the external to whichever side you want to have it on. I use mine on the left so my mouse enters the screen in the correct side. You can also use the external in mirrored mode where everything is the same on both monitors. The easy way to switch between mirror and extended is the F7 key.

  • Need help with networking external hard drive

    Hi,
I am working on a corporate network and I have a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition external hard drive attached to a Mac OSX 10.4. i have other Macs connecting through the network to this Mac and accessing the external hard drive and it works just fine for that.
What I need help with is the fact that I also have several PCs on the same network (all XP), that need to connect to the hard drive and access the files. I've been able to connect to the Mac using the XP by accessing the IP address. I also set the Mac up with password credentials so that I had to log in to the Mac to access the files. But when I try to access the Mac, it only shows the main computer drive as the only available share and no external drive.
Does anyone know how to access a Western Digital external drive on a Mac from a PC through a network?

For an external hard disk drive or other (different) system shared
storage devices to work, they probably should be formatted in a
format seen by both operating systems.
If the WD unit is not seen by Windows computers on your network,
the WD may have been formatted in HFS+ for the Macintosh. That
is OK unless you need a Windows computer to access the same.
    The Macintosh can see and use a standard Windows disc format;
so the external drive may need to be reformatted away from HFS+
if that is really what is going on (and archive any data on the suspect
drive elsewhere, since it will be lost to reformatting overwrites)
and then both Mac OS X and Windows should see the files on there.
    And Macs set up to run Windows may also see the non-Mac format;
without having to re-boot via BootCamp, if that option is in use.
As to the other question(s) I really have no idea at this point in time.
And since that may be the rub, hopefully someone will follow up here.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Help with using external monitor on MacBook

I have a white MacBook 2.1 running 10.5.8. I use to have it run a Samsung LCD 19" which had a 1280x1024 native res, which was available in the screen prefs. That broke, so now I was going to go bigger with a 24". I've forgoten how this works, but I see the specs show this book should do a max of 1920x1200 on an external monitor. However, I don't see that listed as an option in the prefs. Will that be listed if I hook up a monitor capable of that? Also... Most 24" monitors seem to be native 1920x1080. I want to run at the native res of the monitor and not have to do any stretching or anything. Do I need to find a monitor that has a native res of 1920x1200 to match the book's max res? Or will the 1920x1080 work somehow without stretching. I have the mini DVI to DVI adapter, so I assume I should be set for any monitor sold new now.
Thanks for any help. FYI... Don't buy Samsung... 3 1/2 years on an LCD is rediculous.

    Hi Dave,
Yes, the available resolutions will show when you hook up an external display.
Depending on the resolutions availabe on a given display, you may or may not be able to run it without stretching (or black bars) at native resolution (most likely you'll be able to).
