Need Help with 1st time Wireless setup

I installed my first router today (WRT54GS v.6) and everything went smoothly. But then I encountered a (small?) problem when trying to add my laptop to my network. When my laptop establishes a connection with my router, I receive the following message:
Windows - System Error
A duplicate name exists on the network.
Does anyone know why this is happening and also know how to fix this problem and stop the message from appearing?
Thanks in advanced.
BTW, even though the message appears, I am still able to connect to the internet with my laptop.

You probably have 2 or more computers using the same computer name, such as "MyComputer".
Right click on "My Computer", and click on "Properties".
Click on the "Computer Name" tab.
Here you will see the computer name.
Do this on all your computers.
To change the computer name, click the "Change" button.
While you are here, make sure all computers are set to the same unique "Workgroup".

  • Need help with new Time Capsule/Airport express setup!

I just hooked up a 500g time capsule to replace an airport extreme, and now my airport utility on my MacbookPro Retina no longer recognizes the airport expresses I had on my network for airplay purposes.  Can anyone help with this issue?

Instead of a switch you need a wireless router, because your modem will only assign one public ip address to the switch and that ip address will be forwarded to any one computer at a given time...You should replace the switch with a wireless router and it should resolve your concern...

    Hi Flash Community,
I'm making currently a quiz using Flash Pro CS5. What I want to implent is a time bar which will load once the bar is loaded it will go to the next frame.
So what I need is first a timer which will start immediately when the user sees the question and I need a time bar which will indicate how far the timing is. So let's say you have 30 seconds to answer the quiz. When the timer is at 15 seconds the bar will be at half.

  • Need help with my E2100L Wireless Router

I moved back home with the parents after graduating from college while I'm searching for a job and I noticed my parent's wireless internet connection was really poor. I'm normally pretty decent with computers but I haven’t been able to fix this problem so I am hoping if I explain it to you fine folks and can point me in the right direction to getting everything running properly.
The problem I’m having is with the wireless signal fluctuating frequently when I’m not in the same room with the router. I know the issue is not with Comcast or the modem because when I remove the router and just plug into the modem I get 25 Mbps all day long when I run a test on Speedtest.net.
The setup is Comcast Internet 25 Mbps, SB6120 Modem, and Linksys E2100L Wireless Router with WPA2/WPA security activated.
Before I touched anything the modem and router were originally in my parent’s bedroom. I was getting speeds of less than 1 Mbps if any when I was in my bedroom so I moved them into the living room to be more centrally located. Our house is a one story house with bedrooms divided by the living room. The move seemed to help a little but something was still really wrong so I did a hard reset on the router. I setup up the network manually by going through the settings on 192.168.1.1. which made things work a little better. However I still wasn’t getting close to the speeds I should have been getting and when in my bedroom the connection would sometimes drop out altogether. So I did another hard reset on the router and this time I used the CD that came with it (Cisco Connect) to setup the network. That has got my problem halfway fixed because now if I am in the living room and my laptop is connected wirelessly when I run the speed test I get 25 Mbps.
I thought I have solved everything because in my bedroom the signal was now very good at 20 Mbps… except the 20 Mbps didn’t last. It held around 20 Mbps for the about first 10 minutes but then dropped to about 16 Mbps for a while. A day later when I run the test I now range anywhere from 3 Mbps to 14 Mbps. There seems to be no consistency. I did a hard reset again and setup the network using the CD and the problem persists. I get 20 Mbps in the very beginning and then it lowers from there and fluctuates frequently.
I thought it might be a firmware issue so I successfully updated it today to the latest firmware “1.0.05 build 4 Mar 8, 2012” but the same thing happens. I just don’t get it. Why am I able to get 20 Mbps for the first few min in my bedroom and then it’s a crapshoot thereafter?  If it were interference wouldn’t the interference always be there and not be a gradual onset? Why when I’m in the living room with the router is it perfect at 25 Mbps but as soon as I go to my bedroom I get a much much lower connection speed.
I could handle the speed being lower if it was consistent but it’s not. This post has taken me about 20 min to type and while doing so I ran the test a few times at a couple minutes apart and got 3 Mbps, 7 Mbps, and 10 Mbps speeds. Someone please help! This is driving me crazy!!!

When in my bedroom there are only 2 other networks available to join that belong to neighbors but their signal strength is fair at best while my signal dances between being excellent and good. There is no microwave oven, cordless phone, or garage between me and the router. When I'm in my bedroom I'm no more than 10 feet from the actual router and only seperated by a wall and I'm pretty sure its not a brick wall.
Again I don't understand how it could be interference. If there was something interfering wouldn't it always be interfering? Like I said in my first post every time I reset the network I get speeds of 20 Mbps for the first few min in my bedroom and then it gradually lowers and I get a fluctuating speed between 3 and 14 Mbps.
In the settings there is no channel width option of 40 MHz only. I get "20 MHz only" and "Auto(20MHz or 40MHz)" as my options. I have tried them both but don't really notice a difference.
I am going to try the insider program today to see what its results are.

  • Need Help on a Time Capsule setup

I want to install a new 2TB Airport Time Capsule to replace my older Time Capsule.  I would like to continue to use my original Airport Extreme for my network and have the new Airport Time Capsule serve as an extension of that network. I have referred to the following article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5096 but then started having issues of understanding what needs to be done.
While there is obviously wireless capabilities for the new Time Capsule, I was thinking that to initially copy the old Time Machine to the new that I would use an ethernet cable. (The old Time Machine is USB to an external drive).  Once the copy is made I'd like to remove the ethernet and position the new time machine for wireless connectivity.  I'm not sure how to connect everything together.  My modem is connected to my iMac 27 by ethernet (that's faster, right?) and so I don't have any ethernet ports available on the modem. (one is input, one is output to the airport extreme, and one is output to my computer.)
How do I connect things for the initial copy and then for the wireless in the future?  The set up book talks about Connecting Ethernet cable connected to the cable modem to the Ethernet WAN port.  Then it talks about Ethernet cable from any Ethernet device to any of the Ethernet LAN ports. I don't understand any of that - what I have or what I want. Is there any connection from the 2TB to the iMac?
Then a window pops up about the 2TB and asks for a password. What's that? Then it asks what is primary (well, I thought I wanted the older Airport Extreme to be dominant and the 2TB to connect as an extender. I don't see that option.)
Anyway, confused about connectivity.  In the end, I'd like to copy the old Time Machine to the new Time Machine and I think the above article will get me there. But I'm troubled about what wires go where.  Any suggestions?

Time Machine is the backup software on your computer.. it has no relationship to any particular hardware.
Time Capsule is an apple router with a hard disk inside. It is not related in any way to Time Machine.. !!
BUT it is used mostly as the target for a Time Machine backup.. Apple naming is very messy.
    1. It's the small white device that gives me a wireless service in my house. It has no drive just serves to provide wireless.
It could be an extreme or express but you state later on it is extreme.
I was thinking to use the time capsule as my Time Machine drive but use the wireless capability as a network extender of the original AirPort Extreme.
Generally it would be better to use the TC plugged into the main ISP modem / router. And you can then use the Extreme to extend the network.. it does depend on locations.. you want the least number of wireless hops or the best chance of running ethernet to the clients. Either setup will work but think which is fastest. Whenever a backup has to go.. computer--extreme--TC. with both connections by wireless it will go at half the speed of
    computer--TC.
And if you can plug the computer--TC by ethernet it will go about 3-6 times the speed of wireless.
    2. I was wondering what is the best way to get the old Time Machine data onto the new 2TB Time Capsule to be used as a Time Machine.
I recommend you start over with a fresh clean backup. The issue is the local backup and the network backup are handled differently by Time Machine and it is not easy to do what you want.
See Q18 here if you want to see what is involved.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    Specifically this one. http://pondini.org/TM/18.html#id18
    3. Yes.. but think if it isn't better to move the extreme instead.
    4) my modem connects via Ethernet to my desktop because I thought wired was faster than wireless. My modem also connects to the AirPort Extreme to broadcast a wireless network for my iPhone and iPad. I could have my desktop connect wirelessly but just thought wired was faster. OK I see what you say about plugging the desktop in to the wireless router instead.
This is wrong.. You should have the computer plugged into the airport router.. and the airport router plugged into the modem.. not both connected to the modem. It will do backups much faster with a direct wired connection to the TC.. but not if it goes via a slow (10/100 port) on the router the ISP supplies.
    5. Sparsebundle is how the TM packages the backup on network drives.
Read the info in Pondini to understand.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Works.html
In particular the part about network backups.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Works3.html
So you're saying that the New Time Capsule is receiving the copied file via network? No cables used in the copying to the new Time Capsule/Time Machine?
Backup runs over either wireless (slow) or ethernet (fast) to network drive.. or you can use a local disk as you have been doing.. and that is the fastest.

  • Nooblet needs help with Linksys WRT160Nv2 wired setup please

    Hello,
I have set up my Linksys WRT160N and when I check the router status in the web based setup page, Status tab, there are numerical values for Internet IP address.
So, I believe the router is connecting to the internet via my netgear modem without any issues.
The problem I am encountering is that my browsers (I have tried Explorer and Firefox) are not accessing the internet.
I have attempted to access the internet with firewall off, but still no success.
Can someone give me some advice as to what settings within Windows XP or otherwise, that I need to alter to correct this issue.
    Thank you in advance,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thanks for the help guys.
I seems to have fixed it.  I uninstalled the Intel Pro Wireless software and rebooted.
Then I installed a driver 3 version old.
This did half the job, under Network connections when I 'configure' the network card, it is now showing a MAC address, before the uninstall and reboot, the MAC was all 0's using configure, but ipconfig/all was showing the right MAC address.
But, now the wireless was constantly acquiring an address, then connected, then went straight into acquiring an address again. then would not connect after a few attempts.  Before the uninstall, it showed as connected, but I wasn't able to use the connection to access the router, internet etc.
Now, to fix the constant acquiring an address, I updated the driver to the latest driver along with the Intel Pro Wireless software and now here I am happily using my wireless  connection without any hassles.
    Again, thanks for the help.

  • Help with best wired/wireless setup

Hello. I just moved into a 3 story townhouse and am hoping I can get some input on the best network setup. Here is some background on the connections I have and equipment.
    Equipment:
Airport Express (1 generation prior to current)
Time Capsule (3 generations prior to current)
Airport Extreme (1 generation prior to current)
    Comcast Router
My house has been wired for Ethernet. In my basement the ethernet cables that go to the various rooms are connected to the comcast router. My idea was to have a router on each level. I'd like to use ethernet for most things but wifi for iphones and ipads. Right now I have my time capsule in the middle floor and the extreme on the top floor. The problem is, the idevices don't jump from router to router. Is that even possible?
Lastly, in my basement, I have 1 ethernet port but 4 devices I want to connect to that port. How can I accomplish this? A switch?
Sorry for my ignorance and thanks in advance. Please let me know if there are other details needed to assist.

If you set up the roaming network correctly.. ie same name wireless, same security setting and password as per the standard roaming network instructions.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4260
Then some devices can hop towers nicely (Macbooks generally ok).. whereas iphones and ipads do not jump towers so well. (thinking of wifi like the 3G signal when you are out and about). The technology to jump from one wireless to another is established but some cards and drivers don't work as well as they should. If that is the case you have no choice but to manually switch off wireless and switch back on again.
Otherwise your layout is the best practice. Apple recommends roaming over wireless extend. And most wireless gurus do as it is far superior method.
Lastly, in my basement, I have 1 ethernet port but 4 devices I want to connect to that port. How can I accomplish this? A switch?
Yes, buy a switch. Let me recommend you actually buy a switch with enough ports for everything and have just one ethernet to the comcast router. So buy 8 port gigabit.. that should be enough.. if not then even a 16port. Using a single switch is the best way as it means all the devices are tied together with the best efficiency. Gigabit 8 port switch is a consumer item.. any big computer store will have them for $50 and pretty much any brand is just as good. Buy the Linksys or Netgear if you want longer warranty.

  • Need help with an advanced MIDI Setup

I have used Logic since v5.5 as a tape machine but haven't dived much in to MIDI. I have recently added the following hardware:
    1) Novation Zero SLMkll control surface; hooked up via USB and seems to be functiong as it should.
    2) M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 hooked up via USB; it i seems controlling virtual instruments as it should as well as the plug-ins I have assigned.
    3) My Roland Juno Di synthesizer is giving me issues. What I play on it triggers its internal sounds as well as the virtual instruments in Logic. What I play on the Keystation also triggers the sounds in the Juno.
I have tried assigning different MIDI channels to the Juno and Keystation but still have the same results. I have set the Juno and Keystation as described in their manuals to no avail.  The Apple Audio/MIDI Setup Utility will not let me change MIDI channels on any of it.
How do I get these things to work independently of eachother?
    Any help would be appreciated!
PS; for my audio I am using an Apogee Ensemble and Duet.

    >is there a way to rest it so i can type in my new password?
Your username and password are stored in your keychain. You can remove the key from the keychain and the next time you connect you'll be asked to authenticate again.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, find the relevant key (sorted by server name) and delete it.
    >i cant place any files ont the server. it says that it is read only. how can i change it to read and write?
If you're usin the Finder as your FTP client, you can't. The Finder only supports read-only FTP. To upload files to a FTP server you need to use some other client.

  • Need help with Tiger & XP network setup

    Hi all!
Back in the days of OS 7.5, I managed to stick my old faithful Mac onto my family's otherwise all-PC network. All I really needed was internet access - I didn't try to fileshare.
Now that I have Tiger, though, I'm totally lost as to how to set up the network. All the help I can find seems to say "ask your network administrator." The problem is, that's me! I'm hoping someone can help me set up the router and the Tiger computer as well.
Could this be a compatibility issue between OS 10.4 and the router? The router box said "minimum requirements" for Mac are "10.3, 10.2, or 10.1."
I have a D-link DI-624 wireless router. Right now I have a desktop PC wired in with cat-5 cable, and also a laptop PC that connects wirelessly. No problem with those computers. But I cannot get my Mac to see the router, or vice versa.
I've tried setting the router to "allow DHCP server to assign same IP address to specific MAC address." (I found my Mac's Mac address just fine and double-checked it was correct.) After setting that in the router, I hooked up the Mac via cat-5 and edited Network Prefs. First I tried "Configure using DHCP with manual address," and entered the IP address I had told the router to set automatically for the Mac.
(Router address is 192.168.0.1 and I told it to assign 192.168.0.4 to the Mac.)
Safari told me I wasn't connected to the Internet, so using trial and error I changed Network Prefs to "Configure IPv4 using DHCP." No luck there either, even when I tried the "Renew DHCP Lease" button.
Any advice as to whether or not I should be telling the router to auto-assign an IP address to the Mac? I took off that setting completely, and set Network Prefs to "using DHCP," but still couldn't connect to the internet.
Would it be worth re-installing my older copy of OS 10.1 to see if that works with the router, since that is actually listed on the box?
I thank you for any suggestions you have to offer! I really don't know what to try next.

I'm using the Mac wired - it does not have wireless capability, and as it is sitting right next to the router I just want to hook it up with Ethernet cable. The wireless function is just for the PCs I have downstairs.
I am not sure what non-broadcast SSID means, but I think that has to do with the wireless portion of the network, right? I do have a SSID name set up, and WEP encryption so that only the PCs I own can connect to the wireless network, not anyone else's computers. But on the wired PC I have connected directly to the router, I do not have to input any of the security settings. I've even set the router to recognize the MAC addresses of all my computers, including the Mac.
What brand and model of router are you using successfully with Macs & PCs? The store I bought my router from is willing to give me a full refund if I can't get it to work - perhaps I would have better luck with the type of router you're using.

  • Need Help with Firewire 800 Raid setup

Hello everyone. I am still a newbie with OS X as to most people here but here is my problem. I bought 2 external FW 800 HDD enclosures and install 2 500GB HDD's in them.
I daisy chained them and they work just fine. I would like to setup a Raid 0 on these drives. How do I do it? I go into the disk utility, it states to drag the disks or volumes in, "Cannot Do" and to hot create, "Which is grayed out!"
Can anyone help please? I would like to get this up and running asap.
One more thing, do the drives need to be OSX Journaled or can they be FAT32?
All the help is much appreciated.

  • Re: Need help with a time time lag.

I am a relative novice to labview and have a problem.
I have two waveforms being aquired; one from a flow sensor the other
form a gas analyser. There is a small delay between the flow signal
relative to the analyser (due to the transit time of the gas to the
analyser). What I want to do is compensate for this lime lag and then
plot the corrected waveform to plot an XY graph. This is essentialy a
phase delay that needs to be compensated for.
Can anyone help me solve my problem.
    Cheers
    Virgil.

Here is a possible solution. The idea is to use the Get Waveform Subset funciton on the longer of the two functions. This way you return the exact subset that matches.

  • Need help with hosted credit card setup?

I am trying to setup Sagepay to connect to the BC website to take hosted credit card payments and have done the following steps, but what am I missing? I've done everything I can see to add/change from BC support site, but surely there must be something else to connect the online shop purchase form to the Sage checkout process to take payments?
I did an online chat with BC support on Friday and they kept going through the checkout using 'COD' and said it worked fine, which of course it did as no payment is taken using COD.
However, when you choose credit card, it just fails, so there must be something missing. It has been open as a support call since Friday with no response from BC, can anyone help me please, there is obviously something I am missing or not doing?
I have set up the IP address and subnet mask as required direct with Sage pay online.
I have set the payment gateway page in BC to Sage Pay and entered the vendor name as requested.
I have customised the checkout 'online shop purchase form' to include choose credit card.
    Thanks
    lizre

    Hi Sidney,
    Just an update for you.
I have heard back from Sage Pay support and it was an issue server side with them as you had initially thought. They said my customer had not made their account live and that they had corrected a few other settings their side, but didn't specify what exactly??
However, Sage support have sorted that out now and I tried a transaction BC end and Sage support have confirmed it has all gone through at their end too.
Just as a suggestion, the information is not that straight forward to find if you haven't set one up before. Most of what I found was through many different support articles and watching your online videos. I think that there should be one article that takes you through every stage of gateway setup and the payment form. It would have been a big help for me as it was my first BC Shop.
Thanks for all your help on the processing error and the form issue, it's much appreciated! I wouldn't have got to this stage without your help. So, I am glad it's up and running ok.
    Thanks again!

Try connecting another USB storage device to the TC - HDD or memory stick. Format the device while it's connected to the TC, then try writing and reading to it.
It does seem very odd that you can write to the HDD but not read from it. Presumably when you copy files to it they appear in Finder - you can see them OK? Do they appear to be the right size ("get info", or click in "columns" view). What exactly happens if you try to drag them back to the desktop?
I can only think that you may have a hardware or formatting problem, hence trying a different, freshly formatted, drive.

  • I need help with java Time Zone Updater for Venezuela Time Zone

    Hi,
I've run the latest Time Zone Updater (1.3.5) on JRE 1.4.2. It is supposed to support the time zone changes for Venezuela. The problem is that when I set my Windows time zone and run java.util.TimeZone.getDefault() it says that I am on GMT instead of GMT-04:30.
    Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I have found the solution for cases in which you cannot update your JRE to anything further than 1.5. You will have to create an extra entry in the Java tzmappings file as follows:
Venezuela Standard Time:90,90::America/Caracas:After doing this, you will have to create a new String Value in your Windows registry for the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\Venezuela Standard Time Key as follows:
    Name: MapID
    Value: 90,90

Any iPad model should work with that use. You cannot directly plug the card into the iPad, you will need to purchase the camera connection kit.
The only requirement that presents itself based on the given information is to purchase the model with the most storage capacity your budget can handle. I believe Shutterfly has an app in the app store, but not 100% about that.
