Need help with changing iMacs

I may be selling my iMac. However before I order my new one I want to have the money in my hands for this one. Meaning I will have to give my old iMac to the new owner prior to getting my new one.
So what I need to know is.
1. How do I erase the hard drive of all my stuff.. which is basically pictures, music and a couple word/excel/pdf files (I have only had this one for 8 weeks), so that when the new owner takes it they are able to run the set up like I did when I first opened it out of the box?
2. How do I make sure I have all my stuff saved to my external hard drive so that it is easy to put onto my new one. I have this external hard drive as my time machine currently.

Backup your stuff to an external drive. The simplest thing to do is to clone the drive to an external drive using the Restore option of Disk Utility.
Then do the following to prepare:
Prepare Your Mac for Sale
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities (Installer menu if using Panther or Jaguar) menu. After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button. Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button. Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive. If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive. The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now complete the OS X installation. At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer. Instead just shut it off. The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.
It's proper to include the original installer discs that came with your computer because they have any pre-bundled software that was included as well as the Apple Hardware Test for that model. If you're planning to install a later version of OS X then you need to include the original discs that came with the package. You should provide the installers for any third-party software you plan to include together with any registration numbers.

  • Need help with my iMac ... it keeps freezing up on me no matter what I do.

    Hello all,
    I need help to figure out why my iMac keeps on freezing up on me. I used to have Norton SystemWorks installed but I recently uninstalled it because I found out it was poison to Mac OS X. I've used Memtest to check the memory in my iMac. The result of the test came up fine.
    You can go to 'Cooling fans for iMac?' (one of my post) to read all of the solutions I have tries out. This post is the original post to try to fix the problem but it FAILED.
    In the last week, I've backed up all of my data to my external hard drive. Then I totally erase my internal hard drive and made sure to zero out the drive. After, I proceeded to install Mac OS 9. I had some problems installing the system at first. I finally installed Mac OS 9 and upgraded it to the latest version of 9. Next, I tried to install Mac OS X 10.3 with difficulty. I then finally installed it. I notice during and after installing the both OSs, my iMac keep on freezing. After I installed Mac OS X 10.3, I updated the OS. And yes, while updating the OS, I've experience the same problem as before. I now have my system back to where it was before I did a fresh install of both Mac OS 9 and X.
    You guest it, my iMac is still freezing up on me no matter what I do. Can someone please help me with this problem? Can he/she tell me what is going on with my iMac and how to fix it? All the help I can get would be appreciated. Thanks for you time and effort.
    P.S. After trying all of the previous suggestions from other users, I came to an conclusion that one of the hardware in my iMac my be failing. I know for curtain it is NOT my memory. It my be something else inside my iMac.

    Rainbow -
    I've read the thread you linked to above and the only thing I find missing in the saga is any mention of the PRAM battery. If it is depleted (and it would be getting close to depletion if it has never been replaced) it could be causing your problem.
    Do you see any strangeness in the time or date displays? That would be a sure sign that the battery is dying. I haven't run into the problem of a bad battery causing constant freezing but it wouldn't hurt to check it out.
    As far as temperature effects, the usual pattern of overheating would be a shutdown of the whole computer, a designed-in precaution.
    Forgive the battery tutorial if you've already dealt with that possibility.

  • Still need help with changing hostname on Solaris 10

    Hello.
    I have some difficulties with changing host name of my computer.
    It is DHCP Client.
    AS I understand there are the following steps that I have to do:
    1. Edit the /etc/default/dhcpagent file and change the line that reads the following:
    #REQUEST_HOSTNAME=no
    to
    REQUEST_HOSTNAME=no
    2. There are two empty /etc/hostname files: hostname and hostname6.
    Do I have just to put there hostname?
    3. /etc/hosts has what I need to change.
    4. I was unable to find /etc/nodename. Do I have to create it? What properties should contain this file?
    5. hostname <new hostname>
    In previous time when I tried to change host name with Management Console my system crashed, I changed: /etc/hosts, but it didn't work.
    Thank you.

    Hello.
    Using DHCP you may really have problems changing the hostname.
    The fact is: The DNS server may assign your machine a host name which has nothing to do with the host name you sent to the DHCP server. Depending on the server (typically DHCP and DNS server are the same machine) nothing will really work. (This is the case with my configuration where the servers are located on a DSL router.)
    I solved the problem the following way:
    * I created two host names (MyMachine and MyMachineNet) in the /etc/hosts file (Solaris 10 and newer: /etc/inet/ipnodes must be changed, too.)
    * "MyMachine" is 127.0.0.1 (localhost):
    127.0.0.1 localhost MyMachine
    192.168.178.100 MyMachineNet* I assigned the name "MyMachineNet" to the network interface in /etc/hostname.networkcard.
    * I use DHCP
    The computer name (in /etc/nodename) is "MyMachine". Some programs (e.g. Gnome !) establish a TCP/IP connection to "MyMachine" instead of "localhost" (I do not understand why). These programs are now satisfied because the host name "MyMachine" represents 127.0.0.1 (localhost).
    I know that there is a switch that tells Solaris to take the machine name from DHCP/DNS instead of /etc/nodename. Unfortunately I forgot where it is.

  • I need help with a iMac problem my brother has!

    Hello! So my brothers old iMac (around 2-3 years old) would just not start. When i pressed the start button on the back of the computer the screen just turned white with a apple logo in the middle and the typical wheel spinning. We waited for about 30 minutes but still nothing. My friend told me to hold shift+command+r+p and that brings up a menu after a while if i want to restore from time machine, reinstall max os x, get help on the internet or so some stuff with the discs. The last 2 things are not important tho. When i then press "restore from timemachine" or something it starts to search for a backup. After 10 minutes it still hasnt found one. So i went back and clicked "reinstall mac os x" and it showed the disks i was going to install the new mac os x software on.
    There was one called "Macintosh HD" and one called "Recovery HD". But they both were locked and i could not install mac os x beacause they were the only 2 disks there. Macintosh HD was about 600GB memory and 150GB free and the other one was only about 600MB. How can i fix this? It would be nice if we could restore the computer back to before because he had some things from school but if it dosnt work we can do a full new mac os x so it is all new and no programs/users on it. I hope you understood what i said because my english is not that good
    Its OS x 10.8.4 i think, might be 10.8.2/3 or something xD

    I suggest verifying that your hard drive is OK. First power off the system, then hold down the Command and R keys to get into the Mac OS X recovery mode. Once you select your language you can run Disk Utility to determine whether your hard drive is functioning correctly. I suggest using the 'Repair Disk' and Repair Disk Permissions' options. If Disk Utility finds problems (SMART errors) then you will need to get them resolved before proceeding. I believe too many SMART errors can lock your drive.
    I also suggest reviewing the following Apple website describing the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program to see if your system is affected. The program has been around for quite awhile. According to the document, eligibility may have ended April 12th depending on when you purchased the system, but it's worth checking.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Need help with changing the name.

    I got my palm pre from an uncle who lives in the states. The problem is I can't call tech support to ask them because I live in belize. The proble I have with my pre is that I have added my email account to the phone, but when I send an email, they receive it in my uncles name, my name is lanny and they receive an email form cesar, I think you can see where the problem lies. Is there anyway I can change it to my name? Please help!
    Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

    Hello and thank you for using the Palm Help Forums!
    I would create a new Palm Profile. To do this you will need to go to the Device Info app, Reset Options, then select Full Erase. All pictures, videos, and anything else stored in the USB side of the device will be erased. I recommend that if you want to keep any of that to connect your device to a computer then click and drag everything you want to keep off of the device and onto your computer.
    After you perform the Full Erase the device is going to reboot. It is going to come up with a screen to sign in to a Palm Profile or Create a New Palm Profile. NOTE*** You will need a data connection to do this. Select Create a New Palm Profile and fill in the blanks. Once you are back into the device you can set up your email accounts again and it should display the name you created the Palm Profile with.
    I hope this helps,
    -Pat

  • HT1918 i need help with changing my billing information

    hi iv followed the instruction on how to change my billing details and a message on my iphone 5c saying, your payment method was declined. please enter another payment method, i dont understand whats going on im not sure if i owe the apple app store money but i carnt see how i could when iv always had enough money in my account to pay for the product iv purchesed, this is causeing me alot of problems as i can not download important app that i need to proform my job.
    please help
    ashley

    What are you trying to use as your payment method ? If it's a debit card then I don't think that they are still accepted as a valid payment method in all countries - from this page :
    You may be able to use other payment types in your country, like debit and Maestro cards.
    which implies that they are not accepted in all countries, and there have been a number of posts about them being declined.
    If it's a credit card then is it registered to exactly the same name and address (including format and spacing etc) that you have on your iTunes account, it was issued by a bank in your country and you are currently in that country ? If it is then you could check with the card issuer to see if it's them that are declining it, and if not then try contacting iTunes support and see if they know why it's being declined : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Account Management

  • I too need help with my iMac

    Hello everyone!
    I have a tray loading Blueberry iMac G3. For a while everything was going well as I dual booted OS 9.2.2 and 10.3.9. One day, I decided to try a tripple boot with Yellow Dog Linux. I've been kicking myself ever since.
    After a failed install, my computer won't boot at all. I've tried three different hard drives, resetting the PRAM / NVRAM, buying a new battery. It doesn't boot from either of the OS 9 or OS X install CDs. The screen turns on to a flashing question mark, the hard disk and CD drives spin and read for a few seconds, but never startup.
    I did a lot of research and found information on Open Firmware. Under the 'boot-device' setting when I type 'printenv' it's completely blank. Does that have anything to do with my problem? How about when I type, 'eject cd' it says the eject command failed?
    I've swapped out the hard drives a lot and even the optical drive a couple times - could I have messed something up?
    Thank you very much for any input!

    I don't think these machines are the best for triple booting since they do not have the mac startup manager. You have you rely on linux yaboot.

    I think you need to get these variables re-initialized. Try pulling out the battery for awhile 15minutes. Reset the pmu. Here is the procedure for a related machine:

    or here

    I don't think changing these is the solution.
    Thank you very much for any input!
    I have installed Unbuntu on my machine. I got the machine to triple boot.

  • Need help with changing letter cases : (

    Hey everyone, I have an assignment that needs to
    1) allow the user to enter a sentence
    2) count the number of upper case, lower case, spaces, and other characters in the sentence,
    3) convert each first letter of a word into upper case if not already in upper case,
    4) convert non first letters to lower case if not already in lower case
    So, I have been successfull counting all characters, but I can't seem to find a way to convert the letter cases.
    I understand I have to distinguish first letters and non first letters, and I did this by using a boolean.
    Also, I tried to use a for loop and convert the letter cases accordingly by += 32 and -= 32.
    This is what I have for now :
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    public class Asg3 {
         public static void main(String [] args)     {
              String sentence = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter a Sentence!");
              int length = sentence.length();
              int counter = 0;
              int uppercase = 0;
              int lowercase = 0;
              int space = 0;
              int other = 0;
              int total = 0;
              boolean firstletter = true;
              char thischarac;
              for (counter = 0; counter < sentence.length(); counter++)
                        thischarac = sentence.charAt(counter);
                        if ( thischarac >= 65 && thischarac <= 90 ) {
                             ++ uppercase;
                   else if ( thischarac >= 97 && thischarac <= 122 ) {
                             ++ lowercase;
                   else if ( thischarac == 32) {
                             ++ space;
                   else {
                             ++ other;
                             ++ total;
              for (counter = 0; counter < sentence.length(); counter++) {
                   thischarac = sentence.charAt(counter);
                   if (firstletter == true) {
                             if (thischarac >= 97 && thischarac <= 122) {
                                  thischarac -= 32;
                   else
                        if (firstletter == false)
                             if (thischarac >= 65 && thischarac <= 90) {
                                  thischarac += 32;
    System.out.println("You have entered: " + sentence);
              System.out.println("Upper case Letters: " + uppercase);
              System.out.println("Lower case Letters: " + lowercase);
              System.out.println("The number of blank spaces: " + space);
              System.out.println("The number of other characters: " + other);
              System.out.println("Grand total: " + total);
              System.exit( 0 );
    I am stuck on this for hours now, and all googling, asking friends, going over lectures have failed, and this is my last resort.
    I understand it is frustrating when students come here for homework, but I would really appreciate any hints or help.
    Thank you!

    Oh, sorry I'm new and didn't realize the code button. Anyways, here it is
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    public class Asg3 {
         public static void main(String [] args)     {
              String sentence = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter a Sentence!");
              int length = sentence.length();
              int counter = 0;
              int uppercase = 0;
              int lowercase = 0;
              int space = 0;
              int other = 0;
              int total = 0;
              boolean firstletter = true;
              char thischarac;
              for (counter = 0; counter < sentence.length(); counter++)
                        thischarac = sentence.charAt(counter);
                        if ( thischarac >= 65 && thischarac <= 90 ) {
                             ++ uppercase;
                   else if ( thischarac >= 97 && thischarac <= 122 ) {
                             ++ lowercase;
                   else if ( thischarac == 32) {
                             ++ space;
                   else {
                             ++ other;
                             ++ total;
              for (counter = 0; counter < sentence.length(); counter++) {
                   thischarac = sentence.charAt(counter);
                   if (firstletter == true) {
                             if (thischarac >= 97 && thischarac <= 122) {
                                  thischarac -= 32;
                   else
                        if (firstletter == false)
                             if (thischarac >= 65 && thischarac <= 90) {
                                  thischarac += 32;
                                    System.out.println("You have entered: " + sentence);
              System.out.println("Upper case Letters: " + uppercase);
              System.out.println("Lower case Letters: " + lowercase);
              System.out.println("The number of blank spaces: " + space);
              System.out.println("The number of other characters: " + other);
              System.out.println("Grand total: " + total);
              System.exit( 0 );
    }The problem I'm having is converting letters to their right cases. I need to change the first letters of a word to upper cases, and non first letters to lower cases. For example, if the sentence the user entered is
    "tHIS AssigNMent IS harD!" , I would have to convert it to : "This Assignment Is Hard!"
    What I tried to do is use a for loop and a boolean.
    If firstletter == true, and if the character was lower case, I would subtract 32 from that character.
    If firstletter == false, and if the character was upper case, I would add 32.
    The problem here is that, what do I have to do to make it print the converted sentence? I have tried System.out.println( "The new sentence is :" + sentence); which gives me only the original sentence,
    and System.out.println("The new sentence is :" + thiscarac); which gives me all capital letters.
    So there are two main problems:
    1) Is my forloop and boolean correct in converting the cases? Am I using the right method?
    2) If so, how do I get the system to printout the new converted sentence?
