Need help with color settings

I am printing from InDesign CS2 to a Lanier LD 335c multifunction color printer. The colors do not match what is on the pc, and the image quality is grainy. Unfortunately this is a network printer so I do not have access to make changes to the printer settings. I have played with the color management settings in InDesign, the printer driver settings on the pc and everything else I can think of. The technician has come out to look at it, replaced parts and recalibrated the machine, but nothing has changed.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I am ready to give up.

That is not a feature of iPhoto - suggest to Apple - iPhoto Menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback.

I am looking for someone to help me. Please!
I am looking for help with Photoshop/printer not printing correct colors.
I have: Windows 7, Photoshop CS5, Photoshop Elements, HP Pavillion Laptop, new Okidata C530dn color laser printer
Previously I had a Canon Pixma MP620 and a gentleman from another forum gave me the correct settings for printing on photo paper and colors were perfect. I now have a OKIdata C530dn color laser and have started a business printing business cards and greeting cards, etc., and I do advertisements on a freelance basis.
I will be working a lot with cardstock or cover stock 65-110 lbs paper. I have an old OKIdata 2024e at work, and the colors are much better with that printer than my new personal one. I have tried matching the settings of that printer to mine to no avail. I have finally gotten the color close, but not quite. When I print on my Canon injet the colors match and print perfectly.
I have tried every setting variation that I can think of to get the color correct with my new OKIdata. I have to get the colors correct or my new business will go under because I can't match colors for my customers. I am a self taught Photoshoper and a novice so please bear with me.
Using Okidata PCL. Also have PS

I have gotten the color close, but colors are dull. I have tried an adjustment layer and setting the saturation higher, but that doesn't help. I know my laptop is showing the right colors, (calibrated) because I am still printing to the Canon with cardstock and the colors are perfect using the same settings above.
Tried printing in PSE and it gave me an error that it was not a post script printer. Installed ps driver, still getting errors and it wouldn't print.
I would appreciate any help you could give me before I run out of toner and have to buy the expensive toners, or just slit my wrists j/k LOL

You need an ICC profile for your printer. Chromix has an excellent service at http://www2.chromix.com/colorvalet/ which will do this calibration for you. You download some software they provide, then print a test file on the exact same paper you are using for your cards. Then send the output to them and they will calibrate the colors with their equipment and send you the ICC profile file. Once you have it, you'll be able to print accurate colors.
There are other services out there that may cost less, but I do not know how reputable they are. Chromix is a good business I've worked with many times.
If you are trying to run a business and you don't understand color management yet, you may be in for a lot of trouble. Please get the book "Real World Color Management" available at http://www.colorremedies.com/realworldcolor/ and it will save you a ton of money and headaches.

Needing Help with color setting for Photoshop 4 + imac

Hi, Is anyone able to assist me please. To cut a long story short. i have had to reinstall my original software onto my Imac as when i put on Snow leopard it was just slowing down Photoshop 4 and would keep crashing. So my problem is .... I had some prints printed today at Fuji and the prints have come back dark and just not up to scratch. I know that it is not Fuji, but my settings. I had someone set up my imac and Photoshop last time, but this time i will have to do myself and i just don't know what to set them at. Can anyone help please. Being in the business of printing other people's image files, I can say without any doubt that the advent of digital image processing has definitely muddied the waters to a much greater extent than was the case when printing negaive film. I'm also a shooter, and have been using such programs for many years, so I can understand the desire to manipulate your files before sending them to the lab. Color negatives never had "Profiles" attached to them. If the proper film was used for the lighting conditions, it was simply up to the lab to make sure the resulting print was in balance, both in color and density. It was also the lab's responsibility to maintain a degree of quality control that would make all of the above possible and repeatable. I have to agree with the other response to your question. Whether or not you have an embidded a profile, it's always the job of the printer to make sure the final print is up to a certain standard of quality. If that is not the case, find another printer. Unless you have indicated that your files should be printed without any corrections, the oweness belongs to the lab/printer. I do have a few customers whose work I can print with very few corrections, due to the fact that they have calibrated their displays and have a very tight workflow. However, the vast majority of files that I print require a considerable degree of correction, that's my job. It's also the job of your lab/printer and if they are nor satisfying your needs you have to find someone who does. I have printed many files that have no profile embidded and I simply convert them to my working color space(Adobe RGB 1998). If you are concerned about doing color settings, this is the obvious place to start. Create a custom space and make sure your working color is set to Adobe RGB 1998, not sRGB. Adobe RGB 1998 is a considerably larger color space with a wider gamut and will allow for more choices and a wider range when it comes to processing the image. Pro Photo RGB is an even larger color space, but one that is seldom used at this time. I suspect it will become more popular in the fairly near future, as other technologies continue to push the color gamut envelope.
So, I guess the gist of all of this is that you need to either have your lab/printer redo the dark prints, or find someone who knows how to print. And equally important, someone who cares about your work as much as yo do.
I am attaching a screen shot of my color settings and I would suggest this might be a good place to start.

I need help with export settings

Hi everyone,
I need help outputting an HD file for presenting a video to a client. I have tried exporting to HD .mov (H.264 codec) and PE keeps crashing (error compiling movie). From what I’ve read here, it’s due to the gargantuan file QT creates and HD space (even though I think I have enough HD available).
So, I need a recommendation from you on what kind of file to output which will allow me to present the movie to the client in HD. This file is solely for the presentation, I have already published for web (FLV) and YouTube (direct share from PE) and they both worked fine.
Here are my project specs:
Timeline:           4:26
Format:               1920 X 1080 HD
Timebase:          29.97 frames per second
OS:                        Windows XP SP3
Processor:          Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.66GHz
RAM:                    4GB

I wanted to follow-up on this post. I came into the office today to run a few tests so I can make sure that I have the correct settings on my camera and PE project for the next time around. Here are few observations I was wondering if you can comment on:
My Sony camera cannot shoot HDV. The only format it supports is AVCHD, so I'm stuck converting.
I tried to convert the footage I have to HDV with the software I have (AVS Video Converter and Koyote Soft HD Converter) and neither of the two have an "HDV" conversion setting. I see AVI, MPEG, MOV and many different settings in each (AVI: Hd Video 1080p: H.264AVC, 29.97fps, 4200kbps, Audio MP3, 256 kbps or MPEG: HD Video 1080p - MPEG2, 15000 kbps, 1920X1080, 29.97fps, etc). What should I be looking for?
I searched for "best file format" in the forum and found various postings from both of you referring to converting to DV-AVI within PE; especially if you have AVCHD footage (which I have). So, I followed directions and converted a file for testing. Then, I created a new project using HDV 1080i 30 settings and imported the converted file. I still get a red line on the timeline. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?
I also converted the MOV files (shot in HDV 60i with the pro camera) to DV-AVI. I also get a red line on the timeline...
The DV-AVI converted footage (both cases) doesn't appear to be HD. It looks jagged on the preview window. Is it HD?
The DV-AVI converted footage is almost double the file size as the MTS (AVCHAD) file (138mb vs. 60mb). Isn't that going to make PE run slower?
Thanks in advance for your help. I just wanna make sure I do my homework now so I set everything up correctly on the next project.

Need help with Color Profiles between Photoshop and iPhoto

Hey guys, I'm a photographer and have always used Photoshop in comination with iPhoto. I am having great difficulty lately with color profiles randomly changing within albums of pictures. I need all of my images to be in sRGB, but some somehow end up in Adobe RGB. It seems to happen at random. Apple seems to think it's an Adobe problem. Adobe isn't sure what to do. Anybody aware of any known issues between CS5 and iPhoto using OS 10.8.4 with regard to color profiles and how to fix them?

Help with Color Settings/Profiles...White's look 'yellow' when exported to PowerPoint as a .png

I am running into this odd occurence and can't seem to figure it out.
First - I am not an expert in the Color settings/Profiles topic but I am thinking there is an issue here.
When I look at this image "McCroreyDigitalLogo.png" in Photoshop the 'whites' appear right.
Then when I import it into ms PowerPoint, the whites look yellowish.
I have done a series of 'tests' and it seems to be that the color profile out of photoshop and the one in PowerPoint are not compatible.
I have reset my Photoshop preferences with no luck/change to the results.
Finally, I did a screen shot out of photoshop and pasted that into Power point. The white appeared correct.
Could use some guidance on how to fix this one. Basically any files I run through PS, when they are imported into PowerPoint, the whites turn yellow.

PowerPoint is not a color managed program and can display the color values only in the color space of your monitor without any correction.
Color managed programs like Photoshop correct the color values when displaying them in order to simulate within the color space of your monitor other color spaces, for example sRGB, AdobeRGB, the color spaces of various printers, and etc. For this reason you can not match the color in non-color managed programs to the color of color managed programs but you can do the opposite match the color in Photoshop to PowerPoint.
There is two ways to do this:
One way is if you want the color values in Photoshop to remain the same but be displayed in the color space of your monitor which PowerPoint is using, you can either color proof with or assign your monitor profile to the document.
To color proof choose View > Proof Setup > Monitor RGB.
To assign, choose Edit > Assign Profile, select Profile and from the menu choose the color profile of your monitor. If you are not sure what's the name of the color profile of your monitor, go to the Color Settings, in the Working Spaces section use the RGB menu, scroll up and check what it says after Monitor RGB-
Both proof and assign will give the same result on your monitor but the difference is - the proof is temporary and will last only for the session and the profile, if embedded when saving the file, will stay and when open in other color managed programs including those on other users' computers the color space of your monitor will be simulated and for those users who don't use color managed programs the colors could be way off than if saved with a profile of a more common color space like sRGB.
The other way is If you want the appearance in Photoshop to remain but the color values converted to the color space of your monitor, choose Edit > Convert to Profile, and from the RGB menu choose the color profile of your monitor. This will preserve the appearance and also match the colors in PowerPoint but like proofing and assigning you are not seeing what other users may see on their computers.
It is not possible to see the same colors in color managed and non-color managed programs and at the same time simulate how others using different computers may see the colors because different monitors display color values differently. Color managed programs can simulate a common standard color space like sRGB while non-color managed programs can not.
Edit: Have in mind all this will work properly if you have a color profile that describes correctly how your monitor displays colors. What you did as described in your post #6 is assign a color space that may be different than the color space of your monitor. The result is when working in sRGB color space your color managed programs will match the non color managed programs on your monitor but that doesn't mean that the actual sRGB space is displayed and any other color space simulation could be based on a wrong monitor profile.

Need help with export settings...Please

I am brand new to the camera I have but been using FCP for 6 years. The camera is a Panasonic HMC150 that records in the AVCHD codec. I have an Intel Imac 20 2.4 Ghz 4 gigs of ram. My audio/video settings for the sequence in FCP are as follows:
Sequence pre set: Apple pro Res 422 1920-1080 60i 48khz (footage is 1080 60i)
I Log and Transfer with no problem, edit no problem.
My question is when I go to export the finished sequence to Idvd or DSP, what settings do I use?
I have exported to quicktime movie file with "current settings" and I have had NO luck in compleely burning a DVD. Is this the correct setting? what is everyone else using? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

DVD is standard definition. You have to compress your HD material to SD first. Crack open the manual for Compressor or DVDSP and you'll get loads of valuable info. The first 30 or so pages of the DVDSP manual are quite informative, and easy to read.

Need help with color depth on Ultra 5 (solaris 8)

I have always run Solaris on older equipment, and now I have a machine which is "new" to me, an Ultra 5. xdpyinfo tells me that this machine can do 24bpp color, but so far I haven't been able to figure out how to get the X server to come up in 24-bit mode. (Yes I rtfm'ed but I haven't found it yet.)
Since this is a used machine, I only have the Solaris cdroms, etc. (this is for 2.8 beta-01/01, btw), but not the simple docs which came with it. I didn't find it (surprizingly) in answerbook.
Please help if you know how to solve this one. Thanks

Hi, 
There's two things you have to do. 
First, you need to use the frame buffer configuration utility 
called fbconfig to configure the video card. 
Then, you need to copy /usr/dt/config/Xservers in 
/etc/dt/config/Xservers and edit the file to tell the X 
server what color depth to use. 
For example my copy of the Xservers file, configured for 
a standard 8-bit frame buffer on /dev/fb1 and a 24-bit frame 
buffer on /dev/fb0, contains the following line:

:0 Local local_uid@console root /usr/openwin/bin/Xsun -core -logo -dev /dev/fb0 defdepth 24 -dev /dev/fb1 left
</pre>
Be sure to check the man pages for fbconfig(1M) and Xsun(1).

Newbie needs help with color profiles

somewhat new to digital photography and send most of my stuff to local lab (Costco) when needing to print. I have a mac, with Leopard, and use Lightroom to export to jpgs and upload to the lab site.
Simple enough, but I noticed their site had the icc's available to download. My intent is for lightroom to rendor and export the photos the way their lab will print them.
Why bother to really develop the picture to my liking if it is just going to print differently.
I dont use PS and not sure how I can, if at all, utilize the color profiles the lab provides in LR.

You can now also use the
LR/mogrify plugin to convert to any profile you want. Much quicker than the photoshop route.
Note that there is no reason to do this if you do not hardware calibrate your monitor. Otherwise sending them sRGB is more than good enough. On a Mac, make absolutely sure that you at least software calibrate your monitor. See http://www.computer-darkroom.com/colorsync-display/colorsync_1.htm
Doing this will already improve it quite a bit, but there is no substitute for hardware calibration.

Need help with compressor settings

I hoped someone could help me with this. I have HD footage that has been captured in FCP as SD, so it's 4:3, with letter box so that the original 16:9 footage wasn't stretched.
I need to make small Quicktime movies for streaming on the internet. I want to keep the proportions that I have, but I want to crop out the black letter box for a 320x180 video. How do I do this?
I could also use help in determining which codecs to use. I want the best possible picture quality at a file size of less than 2MB per 1 min. of footage at the above dimensions.

I'm also experimenting with the exact same thing. Only difference to yours - I am maintaining the 4:3. Here's what is giving me best results so far - the quality is very good, however I am still working on reducing the file size -> right now I'm at 4 MB/minute. I am trying get better file size only by slowly reducing the Kbps in the Video Settings until my results get unacceptable. All the rest remains as here - (my COMMENTS IN UPPER CASE):

Exchange was deployed without a CASArray, need help with array settings and PRF to fix.

I'm standing up a new Exchange 2010 server to replace old hardware (not going 2013 at this time) and found out the hard way that the person who built the old 2010 box never created a CASArray. I've created one and applied it to the mailbox DB on the
new server with set-rpcclientaccess and it works fine - I move my own mailbox to the new DB and do a "Repair" to the Outlook profile and then it shows the address for the CAS Arrary within Outlook.
I set up a hardware load balancer for the CAS Array IP address and it shows good connection from both CAS servers, Outlook is connecting through that just fine.
Users are on Outlook 2007 and 2010, almost all 64-bit versions.
Reconfiguring everybody's outlook isn't going to be a practical solution for me - I support a couple hundred geographically-dispersed users most of whom aren't keen to muck about in their Outlook settings. So here are my questions:
Should I add the mailbox DB on the old CAS server to the array using set-rpcclientaccess or will this disrupt connectivity for all users?
Assuming I need to use a PRF to update client computers, have read several pages on how to create the PRF, but even launching outlook.exe /importprf doesn't fix the value - and /promptimportprf doesn't prompt (I see a brief flash of what is probably the
prompt window but it disappears immediately). I'm going to paste in the PRF in use exempting sections 5, 6 and 7 which are unchanged. Where do I correctly need to enter the CAS array value?

If you move a mailbox from one server to another, Outlook will automatically repair the Outlook profile. Have you tried this, instead of trying to force a profile update using a PRF?

Need help with JSSE settings for Axis2 auto-generated client.

Hi all.
I have several working clients generated for me in Axis2 from WSDL's using wsdl2java utility. The clients use HTTP transport but I need to use HTTPS now. I assume JSSE is used for SSL communication in Axis2.
I have created the keystore and set these parameters in code.

System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStorePassword", "changeit");
The lower level mechanics such as socket creation and utilization are hidden from me in Axis2.
What other ssl parameters can be set similar to these? I particularly care about protocol, cipher, keep-alive? I couldn''t find the whole list with possible values. Or may be I should use some different method to set them?

Configure the properties for the SSL and so that jsse be have accordingly
https.cipherSuites,javax.net.ssl.trustStore ...etc.
If you are planning to make your webservice client FIPS complaint. Currently there is a problem with Axis1.4 it is not honoring the property "https.cipherSuites" to use the cipher suites.

Look at how many people are involved in the shoot. Look at all the professionals from various disciplines. Look at all the rehearsal. Look at all the painstaking attention to detail. Look at all the professional equipment they used.
Yes, I looked at the shot at 1:32 in the video they made. They used a Steadicam to stabilize the camera going up the stairs. They used gels on the window to reduce the light intensity and help correct the color temperature. The interior spaces of the upstairs and downstairs have also been lit to avoid irising problems. They didn't rely on mere chance.
Did you also notice the subtle cuts at 00:38 and 1:54? That video was not shot in one take, and that's a fact. And before they even got to the step of color grading, they KNEW they had good video to work with because they had the professional experience to attain it.
