Need help with dual drives on Mini

I just replaced my main drive with a 750GB drive and installed a second drive a 64GB SSD on my 2011 Mac Mini. So when I booted it I installed Lion OS on the SSD and cloned my old 500GB to my new 750GB drive.  I only want to have the OS, Lightroom and Photoshop installed on the SSD.
So here are some questions.
1. Can I just drag and drop LR and PS to the SSD and they will work?
2. How can I make everything I download or install go to the 750GB drive automaticly?
3. How do I get all my apps to show up in the App file on the SSD drive but still keep them installed on the 750GB drive?
4. How do I remove the OS off of my 750GB drive to free up space?
I want to try to get most of these questions resolved before I install Mountain Lion.

1. Likely, but they'll still be looking for & using the Drive they were installed on for other components & settings.
2. You can set the Download folder in Safari>Preferences General, on Installs you'll have to choose the Install Disk.
3. Find the Applications folder on the 750, drag it to the Right Side of the Dock.
4. Not easy without erasing.
Are you sure you want/need iOS8?

  • Working photographer needs help with hard drives and raid O decisions

    Hi new here and also new to Mac well almost new been 20 years since i had a mac. i have a Mac Pro Book and this led to ordering the MacPro since I am a working photographer i made a complete switch in platforms so i have some questions and such but I did place a order on Friday for a 2.66 4gbs of Ram , 2 500 gb hard drive and a 30 in monitor and of course the ATI 1900 XT card so yes i am waiting like many for that card.
    I put initial 4gb of ram since running CS2 will at least take a max of 3gb's in the memory cache . i plan on getting 2gbs more from OWC since that seems to be the only 3rd party ram at the moment that is working correctly from reading some of the threads here. Having 6gbs is a no brainer really given the amount of Raw processing that i do along with PS work plus having e-mail and other apps open at the same time. The ram to me is the easy part although expensive . My biggest issue is what to do with the 2 hard drive slots and Raid O or not but I will start a thread on that. But i will have 6gbs total for now and the bottom line is you can never have enough ram still holds true.
    Now on to my diliemma with hard drives. I did have a raid O scsi 10k rapture and and 10 k scratch on my Dell box and I am just not sure what to do here. i ordered the 2 500 gb hard drive and I may just put them on the storage side of things than get 2 WD 150gb 10 k Sata drives. Now i could Raid O them for 300 gb and get a performace boast that way or i could keep them seperate and put everything on 1 150 drive and ue the second for scratch only. What i don't know is what Mac perfers and what works better. Not worried so much about failure of drives, thats just life in the big city stuff and you just have backups. What i more worried about is performance versus a waste . seems to me that Raid O may not even be needed with these new Intel boxes with all the horsepower going on. Now the other think I notice is the WD 150gb 10 k drives are 1.5 and not 3.0 so is it really faster than the 7200 3.0 single hard drives. I read barefeats shoot out and it seems just getting the right drives in 7200 and Raid O them maybe the answer.
    Okay i am not the biggest geek on the planet but I do know my stuff but this is a area that i look for more knowledge on this. So if i can get some sound advice in this area. i know there are many photographers out there like me pushing hundreds of images that could use the same advice. Now let's leave the money end out , folks sometimes think more with there wallet than what works best not that I am opposed to saving money but after spending over 7 k already on this system it becomes a moot point. LOL

    Ok your question is if you should RAID O the two 150GB Raptors or not.
    I think it was wise for you to get a couple of them for a boot drive with "Time Machine" coming in the next version of Mac OS X. The second drive would make a excellent bootable backup and eliminating downtime if a boot drive dies on you one morning.
    In fact any boot drive cloning software that is Mac Intel ready now would do you good.
    Now Barefeats has run some tests, and I can pretty much back up what they say from my own experience.
    Mac OS X and apps can be helped only so much by a faster boot drive, and a single 10,000 RPM Raptor is enough, RAID O a pair is overkill.
    If you install everything on the boot Raptor and keep your space hogging files (except iTunes) in new folders on another drive, even a 7,200 RPM 500GB, the two drives combined is faster as there is nearly no wait. Both drives can be accessed at the same time. Keeping the boot drive slim keeps the stylus (arm) moving as little as possible to get all the small reads/writes Mac OS X needs.
    I RAID O-ed my boot drives because 74GB was the largest they had at the time, so combining them gave me speed and larger storage. I hardly use the speed, it only comes in handy if by rare chance I duplicate a 20GB folder, then I can do it in half the time of a 7,200 RPM drive.
    Some of the drawbacks of a RAID O set, especially as a boot drive is that I have to auto-clone the whole set to a external drive regularly (I actually do a couple). Since the data path is separated with a RAID O, any drive failure results in total data loss.
    So if you RAID O those 150GB Raptors, your going to have to clone 300GB to a external drive (or another internal) regularly, like once a week. This will take considerable time and you can't use the machine while the cloning process is going on. Sure auto-cloning software like DeJaVu can be used at night/weekends, but why bother cloning more than you have to for no big speed increase?
    However if your messing with huge Photoshop files that spill over your CS2 3GB RAM limit (you need to have a "scratch" thats as fast as RAM), duplicating large files and other heavy duty drive work, then a boot RAID O will come in handy. Just remember your initial performance of 185 MB p/s will drop about 20-25% when those drives are 3/4 filled. Still 140 MB p/s is extremely good and a no worry situation.
    What is worrysome is anything below 80MB p/s (I'm talking uncached 4K write speeds under X-Bench) with a new boot drive and then as time elaspes that boot drive gets filled up and loses half or more of it's inital speed. 30 MB p/s is really slow. Beachball H&LL.

    Do Erase W/Zero in Disk Utility all new drives before laying data on them. Drives get subjected to shock which causes bad sectors on the drive. Driver software uses your data as a guinea pig to test the sectors (which you might not be able to recover the file). Zeroing does this without your data, rewriting the bad sector map so your writes are much improved, OS is more stable. etc.

  • Need help with floppy drive.

    I tried to install a SATA RAID drive with winxp. I held down F6 and put in the floppy that came with my motherboard, and every time I pressed enter it just kept saying Please insert manufacturer supplied disk. So I put in a regular IDE hard drive and loaded xp on that hard drive. I tried to get it to read a floppy disk and it kept saying that the disk needed to be formatted, and when I tried to format the floppy my pc says that the disk can't be formatted. It has done this with every single floppy disk I put in. I have tried 3 different floppy drives and switched the cables, and my floppy drive keeps doing this. I really want to install my SATA hard drive so I can boot from it.

  • Need help with dual slider

    Hi everyone, I am a flash designer new to flex, i know that
    Flex is geared more towards coders than designers, but i have a
    pretty good grasp on how to work w/ flex and as3. usually if i find
    some example i can mold my project after that. anyways here's my
    problem: i found a dual slider component by
    Brendan
    Meutzner and have it working great. what i need is for its
    change event to affect a grid of items in an xml file based on
    price. i know i need to put these items in an array collection.
    however, i found the adobe
    FlexStore
    and realized i could download the source by right clicking on it.
    in the products section there is the code and everything i need to
    make my project work (the slide updates visible products based on
    their price) but my problem is it only works the first time(if you
    move the slider you will see it update the product view but only
    from the initial values that wee set). here is a
    LINK
    to my files (with sourceview enabled) so if anyone can help me out,
    it would be much appreciated. feel free to email me,
    [email protected]
    if you need any more info to help me out. thanks!

    Thanks NED!
    that was it... I got the code below working.
    stop();
    maskee.cacheAsBitmap = true;
    vol_slider.cacheAsBitmap = true;
    maskee.mask = vol_slider;
    stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,myFunction);

    vol_switch.x = vol_slider.x;
    function startDragHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {

  • Need help with transferring from ipod mini to nano!

    I own an iPod mini and just went and bought an iPod nano and am wondering how to transfer the music from my mini onto my nano. This may seem like a dumb question but I'm not finding a way in iTunes to do it. Thanks for help in advance

    IPods are designed to transfer music in a one way fashion. Meaning, iPods can only have music transferred to them via iTunes, not vice versa. So, in your case, where the iPod mini has your music on its memory, you will be unable to transfer the actual music back to the computer. Hopefully, you have the music from the iPod mini stored on your computer or on some flash drive to be able to import the same music to the iPod nano. I am assuming that this is the case, your music being on iTunes, else other implications would have occurred in updating the iPod mini. Put simply, you need to have your music solely on iTunes and transfer from there to the iPod nano. Hopefully this helps.

  • Need help with dual monitor setup for KDE 3.5.5.

    Here's my hardware:
    NEC MultiSync LCD 1530V:  1024x768 (analog)
    Samsung SyncMaster 941BW: 1440x900 (digital)

    Using this xorg.conf file, only my NEC LCD analog monitor could display KDE while the Samsung digital can't.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for your help guys, I'm halfway there.
    The second monitor shows the KDE desktop, but it isn't exactly what I expected.  Right now, both monitors display at 1024x768 (each) or 2048x768 (total).  The larger monitor stretches and distorts the display of 1024x768 to its natural resolution at 1440x900 and it isn't what I wanted.  Other than that, the dual desktop setup behaves what I expected to.
    Here's a snippet of my xorg.conf that currently works:

  • Need Help with Firewire drive

    I got a Seagate HDD in a Vantec Firewire enclosure. Every so often when my IMAC awake from sleep, the External Drive look like still in sleep mode. It is not responding at all. I cannot hear the HDD spinning.
    The only way I can get the drive to work again is by turning it off, then unplug and plug the firewire cable back. If I just turn the power on and off on the external enclosure, the HDD wont spin at all.
    I know the external enclosure and the HDD work fine because I tested it on My PC and it work fine without any issue.
    Is there a way to turn off the power management for the IMAC firewire port or any solution to resolve the drive stop responding after wake up from sleep? This could happen 2-3 times a week.

    Not going to hi-jack this thread with my issue but I'm experiencing some very odd (and not too far off) behavior like this with a Seagate drive (However it's a FreeAgent Desk | Mac).
    YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Something must be going on. I'll edit this post with a link to my post once I'm through searching (Came across yours, wanted to see if I could find an existing Seagate / Firewire issue.

  • Need help with dual display configuration

    I have just connected a HD, widescreen monitor to my Mac tower and am having trouble getting video from FCP to show up on it. It's connected to the mini port and is displaying the same desktop image as my primary monitor but I can't seem to get it to display the video when editing. What am I missing?

    The "mirror" box was already unchecked. The best I could get after trying every conceivable combination was just one frame at a time whenever I stopped playing the timeline. The screen then refreshes to show whatever that last frame is, but it will not play the video, it just displays the very last frame.

  • Quick help with dual booting

    I have hopped around on different distros and I found that Archlinux would be the best solution for me.  However, I need help with dual booting Archlinux and Vista as I will need Vista around for one program and a game that do not work with any Linux distro that I have tried.  I have not done a text based install before, I have only used newbie distros but I want to move on to Archlinux.
    I will only need one partition for Vista and one for Arch.  I believe I can achieve the goal of dual booting them by shrinking the vista partition, and then installing Arch in the remaining space and use GRUB to boot the necessary partitions when my laptop is powered on.  This works with Ubuntu, so I assume it shall be the same basic concept with Arch.  I can follow the instructions on installing, and the installation is easier than I had expected it to be.  I have one question, how would I go about using the above technique that I mentioned during the install?  I would like to know how to do it correctly, I cannot risk messing up Vista.  I'm fifteen and my dad would be very frustrated if I did mess up Vista.  I would appreciate some specific instructions, because I really like Arch from what I have read.  I also look forward to being an active member in the community as well if all goes well.

    Welcome!
    Another young one I see! I'm currently 17, however I started using linux when I was 13 (8th grade year).
    You can resize the vista partition by using gparted. You can download the gparted livecd from there website (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php). I do not know specific directions, but it is pretty obvious how to resize, and if you need help you can probably google something like "resize partition gparted". I WARN YOU that you do risk data loss resizing the partition. I don't believe the risk is high, but it still there, so backup any important data that you may have in case something goes wrong!!
    Do you have your own computer that you can experiment on? That might be a safe option than using your dads. I am been fortunate to have hand-me-down systems, but when I was young I made my dad angry quite a few times "experimenting!"
    If your dad's system has enough juice, you may want to consider install arch in a virtual machine to get idea of however thing works. Following the Beginners Guide on the wiki will be you best bet for a successful and well configured machine (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide). If you really want to play it safe you can even go as far as install windows in a virtual machine, resizing the partition, and installing arch in the same virtual machine.
    I hate to say this, but if you absolutely can not mess up vista, I would advice against installing any other OS and messing with the partition scheme. As whenever you mess with the partitions you run a risk of messing up Vista (or any other os for that matter). If you don't already have your own computer which you can tinker with, it might not be a bad idea to look at getting one. They are becoming cheap, you can build one for about $300-$400USD, or buy one for probably around $400.
    Hope this helps a bit...

    need help with how to reset bios and admin password to reformat hard drive in 8440p elitebook? removal of cmos, resetting laptop, using cccleaner, windows password recovery and hiren's was noneffective, any help is appreciated. thanks

    Hi,
    As your notebook is a business class machine, security is more stringent - the password is stored in non-volatile memory and there are no 'backdoor' passwords.  Your best option would be to contact HP regarding this.
