Need help with screen sharing/VNC
I can't seem to get screen sharing to work. I got my dad an iMac this Christmas and thought I could help him learn it with screen sharing. Not going so well. I tried experimenting with a friend's Macbook and I was able to screen share when we were within wireless range via iChat and Bonjour. But when more remote, the "share screen" icon on iChat is grayed out. My friend tried setting up an AIM account (v 4.7 I think) and we still can't screen share.
So I tried the VNC option with my dad's computer. I went to Finder >Go >Connect to server >entered vnc://Dad's IP address and got the message that it couldn't be found.
All three of the computers in this message have screen sharing turned on, firewall set to accept anyone, and have 10.5.1. We all use DSL modems (from the phone company), connected wirelessly; and I'm the only one with a dot Mac account.2 ideas
The DSL modems that are provided by my Telephone Company (Centurytel) are all Westell and Netopia routers. The phone company calls them modems, but they are actually routers with a built-in NAT firewall. This means you have to set up port forwarding for VNC to work. The TCP ports to forward are 5500,5800,5900. VNC doesn't use UDP.
If you are both using Leopard, then the free .mac account takes care of the port forwarding problem, and also finding the other party's IP number (the .mac id continues to work for iChat even after the 60 day trial). You both login to .mac, start the chat, and then request to share screens. It's working so well for me that as soon as the 400mb 1.5.2 update becomes available I will start moving my clients over to Leopard -
Need help with printer sharing over ethernet
I'd like to share the printer hooked up to my Mac Pro via USB with a MacBook in the same room. The MacBook is connected to my Mac Pro via ethernet cable (no router or switch; just a direct connection).
I have enabled "Printer Sharing" on my Mac Pro.
However, I'm not sure what to do from here. When I open up "Network" in System Preferences, and click on "built-in ethernet" it says "inactive". When I go to "Print and Fax Preferences" and attempt to add the printer connected to the Mac Pro, nothing shows up.
I know I'm not understanding a key point here. If you could help me out I'd appreciate it. The goal is to allow the MacBook to use Airport to connect to the Internet, but to have access to the USB printer connected to my Mac Pro via ethernet (long story why this is necessary, but it is.)

The printer is indeed connected to my Mac Pro via USB and is working perfectly.
As I stated in the original post, printer sharing is enabled in System Preferences on my Mac Pro. There is an ethernet cable going from the ethernet 2 port of my Mac Pro to the ethernet port of my MacBook.
The missing element was that I had not established a network connection between the two Macs. From the Macbook's Finder I chose "Go>Network" and then selected my Mac Pro. After I entered my username and password, I was connected to the Mac Pro.
At this point I was then able to see the USB printer connected to the Mac Pro in the MacBook's "Print & Fax preferences".
However, I still have one problem. When I add the printer on the MacBook, it chooses "generic postscript driver" even though I have recently installed the proper driver on the MacBook. Why would this be the case? -
Need help with account sharing and email
I'm an inexperienced Mac user with a G5, dual 2.0 processors and 1.5 meg ram. Just installed iLife 05 and having an iPhoto problem. My spouse and I have separate user accounts on the same pc. We'd like to share our photos with one another (they're actually the same photo's). On my account, iPhoto email is "mail", no problem. On hers it displays Entourage. I can't change it from preferences pane. Greyed out. On my account it shows America on line but the email icon is "mail" Can you help. We both want "mail"
What is the proper way to share this account? Do we check preferences and share or do we go to the User accounts and move the photo library? Please provide a basic explanation to one who is not really familiar with the workings of a Mac. That's why I went to a Mac in the first place. It just generally works.

AlThe iPhoto sharing that was in the previous version doesn't seem to exist. There is now iCloud Photo Sharing.

Need help with File Sharing and iPHOTO Library sharing........
I recently upgraded my imac and my macbook pro to Mavericks.
I have some problems now.
Previously using iPHOTO when running I was able to see the other computers iphoto library on the left side bar. I was able then to access the other computers iphoto library. This is no longer showing the other computers library from either computer.
When I try to access the other computers files using file sharing I get a message that permisions are missing.
It then asks if I want to fix permisions , I say yes....it will run for an hour and do nothing...I need to force quit.
I really dont want to use the cloud to do this sharing....why should I upload into the internet when I have the computers on same network.
Is there any place I can go to find how this is now done? Before I didnt need to look up a thing....was just intuitive . Now Im running into walls every way I try to share the iphoto libraries across computers.The iPhoto sharing that was in the previous version doesn't seem to exist. There is now iCloud Photo Sharing.

Need help with shared hyperlinks
I need help understanding the shared hyperlink option when creating hyperlinks in InDesign CS5 (Mac) and how to change a shared hyperlink destination.
I want to build a document that contains hyperlinks to files on the client’s server. The end use is to make a PDF in which the client can click on a hyperlink and it opens (for example) a Word document or another PDF on their server. When I started the project, I thought I would create shared hyperlinks because a single server document would be referred to by several links scattered through the InDesign document I was building.
From the Hyperlink palette fly-out menu I chose New Hyperlink, then Link To: File from the dropdown, and I clicked the Shared Hyperlink option, and then OK to close the window. I export the InDesign file as a print PDF, and the hyperlinks work.
Now I need to change the file paths, because the client moved their files to a new location. When I re-open the hyperlink in the Hyperlink palette by double clicking on it, the Edit Hyperlink window opens but it shows my link as:
Link To: Shared Destination (rather than File)
And the destination box underneath shows:
Document: [my document name]
Name [the file path I put in]
However, this link is not editable. I don’t understand why InDesign does this on its own.
I realize now that it was not necessary to tick the shared option when I built the hyperlink. Is there a way (a script? another method?) that I can remove the shared nature of the hyperlinks so that when I go to edit them they show as links to files (Link to: File, not Link to: Shared Destination) with a live Destination Path box where I can edit the link?
(If anyone tries to help with a script, note that my document also contains other hyperlinks to internet URLs and emails that I don’t want to disturb.)

I want to get the links back to the point where double clicking on the hyperlink name (number) in the Hyperlink palette opens an Edit Hyperlink dialog where the destination is Link to: File and the file path shows up in the File Path box as an editable string. Just the way I made them in the first place.
It's good that you're comfortable editing the IDML.
If you compare links made both ways in the IDML, the only distinction between the Shared and the not Shared seems to be the hidden attribute of the <HyperlinkURLDestination/> tag.
Allegedly you cannot edit this in Javascript (though you could, I suppose, create a new HyperlinkURLDestination with all the same properties and then chang eeach hyperlink to point to it).
But editing it in the IDML works fine. Open designmap.xml and change the Hidden="false" to Hidden="true". Of course, you only want to do that in the <HyerplinkURLDestination/> tags...
Something about this seems fishy to me, so you might want to verify it yourself in a single case before you put too much effort in. But I think it's right. -
Should I switch from shared iCloud account with wife to two separate accounts with family sharing?
My wife and I have always shared 1 iCloud accpunt between our our 5s phones, iPad, and an old 4s which is now just a toy for our toddler. With ios 8 I am not sure if it is possible or practical any more. We do it to share purchases and the photo stream and a Google calendar.
With ios 8, it seems to be impossible for both of our phones to share their location. From what I can tell, only 1 device at a time on the icloud account can share its location. Is that a correct assumption? And icloud no longer gives the option for each of us to sign into separate itunes accounts on find my friends. We are forced to sign in with our 1 shared iCloud account. So we can no longer use find my friends to see each other's location.
So has ios8 rending sharing an iCloud account useless? I'm wondering if we now need to have separate accounts and link them with family sharing. Will we lose the benefits of having our 1 shared account? I just wanted to make sure we wouldn't lose anything if I set her up with a new account and linked it with family sharing.I have lots of questions about this and other things too; I have been sharing my account with my wife and daughter for years through 10s of iPhones and iPads and with the introduction of IOS8 we are having lots of new and not so fun problems.
As to your question about location. I have three iPhones and one iPad using the same account now (on IOS 8) and all four devices show up with Find my iPhone. My wife's was not showing up today but I went in and turned on the new feature "Send last Location" and all of a sudden her phone was able to be found again. Not sure if that will solve your problem but just wanted you to know that I have the four devices all showing up in Find my iPhone with a shared account. -

Need help with upgrading my OS from 10.5.8
Need help with upgrading my OS. I havent upgraded the OS since I bought it and have version 10.5.8. Now I cant download Mountain Lion- or even Snow Leopard. When i downloaded the first version of SL- 10.6.1 it says i have to have 10.6 first and I cant find that.

Whilst Apple withdrew Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs. You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

2. How many documents?
Everytime the user logs in, the current xml document is loaded from
a oracle database table and put it in the Berkeley XML DB.
The documents get deleted from XML DB when the Oracle application
server container is stopped.
The number of documents should start with zero initially and it
will grow with every login.

The minimum is about 2MB and the maximum could 20MB. The average
mostly about 5MB.
5. Are you using document data? If so please describe how?
We are using document data only to save changes made
to the application data in a web application. The final save goes
to the relational database. Berkeley XML DB is just used to store
temporary data since going to the relational database for each change
will cause severe performance issues.
17. Please describe the shape of one of your typical documents? Please
do this by sending us a skeleton XML document.
Due to the sensitive nature of the data, I can provide XML schema instead.
18. What is the rate of document insertion/update required or
expected? Are you doing partial node updates (via XmlModify) or
replacing the document?
The document is inserted during user login. Any change made to the application
data grid or other data components gets saved in Berkeley DB. We also have
an automatic save every two minutes. The final save from the application
gets saved in a relational database.
19. What is the query rate required/expected?
Users will not be entering data rapidly. There will be lot of think time
before the users enter/modify data in the web application. This is a pilot
project but when we go live with this application, we will expect 25 users
at the same time.

We use Berkeley XML DB within the context of a struts web application.
Each user logged into the web application will be running a bdb transactoin
within the context of a struts action thread.

We are clocking 10-12 seconds of loading a document from dbd when
five users are on the system.

If your application has periods of "good" and "bad" performance,
please run the above list of commands several times, during both
good and bad periods, and additionally specify the -Z flags (so
the output of each command isn't cumulative).
When possible, please run basic system performance reporting tools
during the time you are measuring the application's performance.
For example, on UNIX systems, the vmstat and iostat utilities are
good choices.

No to the first two questions.
The web application is an online review of test questions. The users
login and then review the items one by one. The relational database
holds the data in xml. During application load, the application
retrieves the xml and then saves it to bdb. While the user
is making changes to the data in the application, it writes those
changes to bdb. Finally when the user hits the SAVE button, the data
gets saved to the relational database. We also have an automatic save
every two minues, which saves bdb xml data and saves it to relational
database.

I can't remember where the output is explained; my feeling is that "V(...)" means the index is being used (which is good), but that observation may not be accurate. Note that some details in the setVerbose command could differ, as I'm using 2.4.16 while you're using 2.4.13.
Also, take a look at the query plan. You can post it here and some people will be able to diagnose it.

I need help with my ipod. It alll started when I used TechTool Pro to wipeout data for my ipod and after finishing the wipeout, I restart my computer and after the restart I was ask by my computer whether to ignore, erase or eject the HD and I choose eject and what happen next is that I have a apple logo on my ipod and my computer now cannot recognises my ipod, and the apple logo just stay there. I am using a 3rd gen ipod.

The iPod and iTunes are not compatible with Windows ME and the minimum requirements are Windows 2000 with SP4 or XP with SP2 (although I use several iPods and don't have SP2).
If you can't upgrade to one of these, then you can use the iPod with ME if you are prepared to fiddle around a little. However, you won't be able to use iTunes.

I recently received a laptop from school to access my online classes. When I tried to use Adobe Reader I received the following message: Adobe Reader 9.1 has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience. I tried tech support at school and was told to uninstall and reinstall the program. During the installation process I received the following error: Error 1321 The installer has insufficient privileges to modify the file C:/Program Files/Adobe/Reader 9.0/Reader/Onix32dll. I need this program for school. Can some one please help me.

Since you didn't mention, the UAC setting, I'd like you to disable it for me if it isn't already:
1. Open Control Panel
2. Under User Account and Family settings, click on the "Add or remove user account"
3. Click on any user account
4. Under the user account click on the "Go to the main User Account page" link.
5. Under "Make changes to your user account", click on the "Change security settings" link
6. In the "Turn on User Account Control (UAC) to make your computer more secure" click to unselect the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer". Click on the Ok button.
7. You will be prompted to reboot your computer - do so when ready
You may need to uninstall/reinstall Reader after the reboot in order for the problem to go away, but that part I am not certain of. Try to duplicate the issue prior to taking that step.
If you are unable to resolve issues with Adobe Reader, I recommend using a different reader that has much less bloat and is updated regularly:

FoxIT is a FREE alternative to using Adobe's Reader. Support for free Adobe products is limited forums such as this. The same holds true for open source alternatives except the manufacturer usually helps support their forums while Adobe doesn't monitor this forum or any like it. I know how important it is for you to focus on your classes so don't beat your head against a wall just because Reader won't work when a viable solution exists.
