Need help with homemade usb external hard drive

I got a usb external hard drive kit that you can put any hard drive into, and I have a 20gig western digital disk. I cant seem to get it to work on my gateway(333 mhz celeron) with windows 2000, but I am going to order a imac in 6 days. Do you think that the external hard drive would work on a newer computer like an imac? Also What jumper settings would I have to put it on? The current choices are "slave", "single or master", and "master with slave present". There are also 3 jumper settings that could be possible, but it is not labeled on the hard drive.
thanks!

Rob, check the instructions that should have come with your drive kit, or check the manufacturer's website. Normally an IDE drive would be jumpered as 'master' or 'cable select' if it's used in a drive kit. BTW, that setting remains totally inside the drive housing, it is not visible or meaningful to the computer via the USB connection.
Whether or not your kit will work with a new iMac is hard to tell, esp. since you haven't been able to get it working so far. Have you checked to make sure whether or not you need to install a USB driver for your drive kit on your Gateway machine? (Win98 always requires USB drivers, WinXP rarely does, and I'm not sure about Win2K). For what it's worth, MACs rarely require special USB drivers.

Not much faster than 40 GBs-60GBs per hour. So, minimally, around 12 hours.

  • Need some help with backing up external hard drive using Time Machine

Hi all, I'm trying to work out the best way to back up multiple iPhoto libraries using Time Machine.
At the moment I have got an iMac and Macbook Pro, both of which have an iPhoto library (with different content).  Currently these are not backed up at all.  So what I want to do is back both up to an NAS drive, which I know is straightforward.
What I also want to do is create one iPhoto library on an external hard drive that I can use with my MBP, and then delete the iPhoto library on my MBP to free up some hard drive space (it's running slower and slower and I'm hoping that this might help it run quicker).
So, as I want to have the library on two seperate drives in case one fails, what I want to know is whether I could use Time Machine to back up my external hard drive as well as the internal drive of my MBP?  Also, would I need to have the external drive connected at all times for Time Machine to "see" it?
I hope that makes sense, all I seem to be doing currently is going round and round and can't work out whether what I want to do is possible or not.
    Thanks in advance

If I understand your goal correctly, you're considering using Time Machine as external storage, and it doesn't work that way.  Time Machine keeps around what it can, and older stuff gets flushed as the storage available to Time Machine reaches its lower threshold due to the addition of newer stuff.  When the older stuff gets flushed is not predictable.
It is possible to have several Time Machine backups aimed at the same target (this can be done with Apple Time Capsule, for instance), though you might want to partition the disks to ensure that the intended amount of storage is available.  Different NAS drives have different features here.
NAS is only as fast as your network connection, and that's almost always much slower than the in-box I/O connections; a local disk will be far faster than a NAS disk, just because of the bottleneck that is wired gigabit Ethernet, and most WiFi is slower and sometimes far slower than wired gigabit Ethernet.  FWIW.
If your MacBook Pro is old enough and you have $$ but aren't in a position to spend $$$$$ on a newer model, then consider an in-place drive upgrade.
If your network connection is fast enough to transfer the amount of data you're dealing with in a reasonable time, there are also hosted storage options.
You can use a NAS drive as storage independent of Time Machine, and relocate stuff there.  (You'll still want to have backups of that data, as NAS drives — even NAS with RAID — can still lose files, become corrupted or otherwise ruin your data day.
As for your performance, keeping about 10% or so free on the disks is the local preference, but it's worth reviewing the performance of the whole system — Performance Monitor, Console.app, etc — to see if there's something else going on, or if your system load and personal performance expectations are exceeding what your MacBook Pro can provide.

  • I need help to repair my external hard drive

    (1) My External Hard Drive finally stopped  working. Whenever I tried to use it, I would only get variants of, "Time Machine couldn't complete the Backup to "My Passport for Mac", or "The backup disc is not available".
    (2) "No problem," I thought. "There is no problem with my computer, so I'll just buy another external hard drive," and I did.
    (3) About this time, I partitioned my computer hard drive to enable me to run both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion. I did this with step-by-step instructions by Apple technicians.
    (4) I now find that I have lost a considerable number of files, including those that I value most highly.
    (5) I now find that I need the files in my old, abandoned external hard drive, and it seems to me that the easiest way to access those files is simply to repair it.
(Here's what I've tried so far: (1) Disc Utility Repair. Didn't help. (2) COMMAND-R start. This produced a window with the following entries: Restore from Time Machine Backup, Reinstall OSX, Get Help online, Disk Utility. It seemed to offer hope, but I couldn't highlight any of them, and the "continue" command was dimned out. Where do I go from here? Data recovery is the solution usually offered, and I've alwys wondered why. It seems to me that fixing the external hard drive should always be the first thing to be considered. Data recovery is expensive, and fixing the external hard drive might be cheap.

    What is "WD"?

    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your external volume.
    6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully it'll partition.

    Hello martini84,
If you don't have permissions to access files or folders on your drive you can change the permissions.
OS X Yosemite: If you don’t have the permissions to open a file or folder
If you don’t have permission to open a file or folder, you may be able to change the permissions settings.
Select the item, then choose File > Get Info, or press Command (⌘)–I.
Click the disclosure triangle next to Sharing & Permissions to expand the section.
Click the pop-up menu next to your user name to see the permissions settings.
If you’re not logged in as an administrator, you may need to click the lock icon and enter an administrator name and password.
Change the permissions to either Read & Write or “Read only.”

  • Help, need help booting XP from external hard drive

Hi all, i can't seem to get XP to boot from my external hard drive.
OK, heres the story. i have an imac. i use bootcamp to run OSX and XP. things are good. but i run out of space, so i buy myself a 2tb bare drive and swap it out. so i put the original internal with OSX and XP into an external firewire/usb enclosure. I install refit. I hold option on startup and it shows that i have a windows and a mac OS i can boot from the External firewire disk. looks great, but when i choose the windows from the Ext disk, it doesn't boot, instead it loads windows7 on my new 2tb internal disk.
i hear its hard to boot windows XP from an external disk. my professor told me it has something to do with the boot.ini file on the XP disk... something about changing the value of the "rdisk" to 1, which i have done.
i am not trying to reinstall xp, rather just boot from it because i have so many applications/plugins that i do not wish to reinstall.
Does anyone know if this is possible?>> Logon to windows7, and create a system image/backup of the system FROM the XP external disk? and then reinstall XP on that disk, then restore back onto itself? that way i won't have to reinstall.
    anyone have any ideas?

  • New mac user, need help transferring music from external hard drive

I am new to using a mac. I have had an iphone for almost a year so I am catching on quickly to my macbook but this problem has stumped me and all my mac using friends.
I have a 500gb seagate external hard drive aswell as a new 500gb seagate internal.
I transferred all my music from an old ipod onto the external hard drive. There is about 50gb of music.
When I plug my external into my pc desktop I can see the music folder organized into subfolders with files inside that are encoded unless they are opened in itunes. My pc doesn't have enough internal memory to open and store my music library so I have just left it on the hard drive. When I plug the hard drive into my macbook it will show the music folder as having 50gb but when the folder is opened, none of the subfolders or files are visable.
I went ahead and dragged the folder from my harddrive onto my desktop. It took about an hour to transfer all the files but now the folder is sitting on my desktop and when I open it, it is empty. If i look in the folders info, it says it has the 50gb. If i try to drag and drop it into itunes nothing happens. If I drag and drop it into the itunes music folder, it will go there but will not show up on itunes.
I'm stumped and no longer eligable for apples telephone support as I bought this macbook from a friend. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have a couple of theories, but I'm not an iTunes expert. These people are, though:

  • Help with icon for external hard drive

I am in need of the AUTORUN.inf File for the toshiba 593400-E 320 Gb external hard drive.  I am missing the icon that shows up with the drive.

Just to clarify - when you run Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder) the drive you bought doesn't show up in the window under your boot drive?
If it appears on your desktop, you should see it in the Disk Utility window as this displays all mounted drives.
You then click on the drive (Mybook3.0 or whatever it appears as), and choose Erase from the options on the right.
    Best Wishes.

  • Help with repartitioning an external hard drive

I am sorry that this is probably such a simple question, but I am a novice and I am stumped in Northern Thailand.
I have an external hard drive (500g) that I have partitioned way back into 3 - one for my IMac 1 for a Macbook Pro and the other for a MacBook.
The hard drive is always connected via USB to the IMac and only connected with the laptops on oonce in a while.
Anyway my problem is that I am getting a message on my IMac everytime TM tries to backup that there is not enough room - so i wanted to repartition the hard drive since I have allocated too much to the laptops. When I am in the TM preferences and I go to "Change Disk" and click on "Set up Time Capsule" it defaults to the AirPort Utility and looks for an "Apple Wireless Device", of course my external hard drive is not on of them - so I am stuck.
If you do not want to waste the time of others on this discussion board you could email directly.
    Thanks in advance
    <Edited by Host>

if the drive is connected directly to the imac you have to reformat it using disk utility, not airport utility.
to format a drive you open disk utility. select the whole drive (model, not name) and click on the partition tab. set the number of partitions to 1 (or whatever), click on options and set the partition scheme to GUID. set the format to mac os extended journaled (that's the default) and click "apply". note that this operation will completely wipe the drive. is this acceptable? depending on how your partitions are set up you may be able to delete one partition and increase the TM partition without erasing the data on the TM partition.

  • Help with saving movie (external hard drive)

    Hello,
I am using iMovie for the first time and am converting a VHS tape to DVD. I have a cord going from the VCR to a digital camcorder, in turn going to my iBook for iMovie, and then onto a 150 gig external hard drive that has all 150 gigs available.
19:56 into the 110-minute long show, I get an error message that says "disc space is dangerously low" - even though exactly 4.0 out of 150 gigs of hard drive space has been used. I deleted the project and started again - and got the same error message 19:56 in, at 4.0 gigs used.
I tried saving it to my laptop on the third time, and it went past the 19:56 mark and seemed to be going further. However, I don't think I have the necessary space on my laptop and prefer to keep it on the external to do all the work.
Your help is greatly appreciated. Do know that the project is definitely being saved to the external the first two times, I made that check a couple of times.
    IBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You've failed to format the new external to Mac (HFS+) format.
It is Windows formatted now and has a 4 GB file size limit (hence stopping at 19:56) during import.
Disk Utility can format the drive.

  • Help with setting up External hard Drive?

    Hi,
I bought an 80GB External hard Drive and have just plugged it into my MacBook Pro. It lights up and I can hear the Hard Drive running in it's case, but I cannot move any files on my desktop into the External hard Drive icon. A message keeps coming up that the External HD cannot be modified. I've tried going to Disk utility to repair the Hard Drive but no options are highlighted when I select the 'New Volume' External Hard Drive.
Is there a way to set this up on my MacBook Pro?
    Thanks in Advance.

Got it sorted, i went into Disk Utility again and went to erase. I erased the disk using the OS Extended (Journaled) option and it worked.

  • Kernel panic with 3TB USB external hard drive

  • Need help using iPod as external hard drive

Hi. Will soon be receiving a new iMac to replace my old Dell PC and had a question about how to get all of the contents of the Dell hard drive onto my new iMac using my 60GB iPod. I am a complete computer novice.
    1. How do I do it?
    2. The iPod is currently formatted for my Dell PC. Once I have transferred all of my files (including music) over to the iMac, do I need to reformat the iPod? How do I do this?
    3. Will all my playlists in iTunes be saved when I do the transfer?
Any advice or direction to links would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

"how to get all of the contents of the Dell hard drive onto my new iMac using my 60GB iPod"
If everything you've got will fit then enable your iPod for disk use and drag what you want onto it, or do it a bit at a time: Using your iPod as a hard disk
There is a good general guide to switching from Windows to Mac at the following link that touches on moving music as well How to Move to a Mac - Get your stuff from your PC to your new Mac
"1. How do I do it?"
Have a look at this guide specifically on moving iTunes: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
"2. The iPod is currently formatted for my Dell PC. Once I have transferred all of my files (including music) over to the iMac, do I need to reformat the iPod? How do I do this?"
If you don't intend using your iPod on Windows again the you can reformat it by restoring it on the Mac: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings
"3. Will all my playlists in iTunes be saved when I do the transfer?"
If you follow the instructions in the guide you should have your whole library just as it was.

  • Need help finding a bootable external hard drive for a G4 Mini

Without going into details of a 3 month and counting 'nightmare' (several well-known vendors), I still can not find a hard disk drive that will still boot a PPC G4 Mini over Firewire 400.  As I understand it, the Oxford (now J-Micron) 940-series chip-sets are not compatible with pre-2009 Macs.  Can anyone provide clarity as to the precise requirements in this application and/or suggest a 1 to 2 TB drive that will still boot a PPC over Firewire?  [And before anyone is stimulated to be 'cute' (snide), No, the G4(s) is not my only current Macs but I do have significant (valid to me) reasons to keep one working.]

Okay, I just looked at that OWC Elite Pro (not that it was unknown to me previously) - and they're still claiming that it has the Oxford 934 chip set. (so far so good).  OTOH, I've been in daily contact with OWC techs and senior mgmt for several months now and no one there has ever suggested this as a potential alternative.  I've been a loyal OWC customer since 1988 and had always highly--recommended them  to friends (PREVIOUSLY).  At the same time, on their so-called MiniStack "Classic" (NOT) model/page, they list the newer Oxford 943 chip set (which they've know for almost at least 3 months now (and have admitted in writing to me) will NOT ever boot a pre-2009 Mac (PPC or Intel) until/unless they come up with compatible firmware.  Meanwhile (and to date), that same web page states " It can act as a boot drive as well."  Which is a known, proven and admitted lie - which I've reminded them of at every possible occassion since October (and still they persist) .  But, they'll be glad to take your money - they took mine after I had explicitly asked before purchasing 2 of these units if it would boot the G4 - and was told yes, but they knew/know it won't (go figure).   Furthermore, be forewarned  that their Guardian MAXimus is by far the worst POS I've ever seen in 30-years as a Mac addict.  There' SO much wrong with it/these, it'd take me a few days to write it all out - as if I would want to ever revisit that sub-aspect of this continuing  'nightmare'
