Need help with iPhoto Aperture Lightroom migration

Would really appreciate some advice on this last stage of the move from iPhoto to Lightroom, as Im sure getting my files into the right place is crucial.
Here is where I'm at right now:
I had an old iphoto (v8.3 or something) library with about 30,000 images on a macbook pro (late 2008) which I moved over to my newer iMac, to merge with an existing library of about 8,000 photos which I was managing with Aperture.
Per some advice I got on how to consolidate iPhoto libraries, I opened the old iPhoto library on my newer iMac running the latest iPhoto version, and then I honestly can't remember exactly what I did after that... but I got both libraries into one, and now I have all my photos merged and sorted into folders and projects, and all looks great. Except for one thing: its still showing up as an iphoto library in finder. There is no Aperture library file or folder anywhere. I guess I needed to "import" at some point, rather than simply opening the library?
My original plan was to get everything into an Aperture library before moving to Lightroom. Maybe it doesn't matter. My main concern before I make the move to Lightroom is keeping my newly organized folder hierarchy (with all projects and albums in tact). And I understand I need to change from managed to referenced library for this. So is it just as simple as "relocating the originals"?

Sorry, maybe I can rephrase my question:
My photos are already sorted into this structure, in Aperture, as a managed library:
PHOTOGRAPHY (main folder)
- PROCESSED
        GROUP A
        GROUP B
        GROUP C
        PROJECTS
             PROJECT 1
             PROJECT 2
             PROJECT 3
- WORK IN PROGRESS
        GROUP D
        GROUP E
        GROUP F
How can I make this into a referenced library?
I understand I need to select all my photos and then choose the "relocate originals" option.
What comes next?

  • Need help with my Aperture 3 Library

    Greetings:
I recently purchased Aperture 3 with my new iMac and need some help. I have a large photo library (like 8GB)...all of these are JPEG photos in folder etc. Now after I have pointed Aperture to my pictures library, I now see my pictures library folder has ballooned to over 29GB. I have not added a great deal more photos and it is just blowing up the space on my hard drive. My question is, I see there is an Aperture library file that is like 9GB in size, then all of my other photos are there too...so can I delete the separate folder of pictures that I originally had before Aperture or do I need to keep the "Aperture Library.aplibrary" file and I can get rid of the others? I am confused as to what I need to keep and get rid of...and I don't want to delete something I need here...but also, I don't want to keep duplicates...it seems like from the size, which is now nearly 4 times the size it used to be. Please help me understand the in's and out's of this so I will get rid of the copies (if there are any).
    Thank you,
    Dave Jordan

    Hi Dave
I'd recommend you read a couple of the sections in the User Manual before proceeding. I'd suggest the following:
     1) [What Are Managed Images and Referenced Images?|http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapte r=3%26section=1%26hash=apple_ref:doc:uid:Aperture-UserManual-91292STP-1013878] from the 'Basic Components of Aperture' page.
     2) [Planning Your Import Strategy|http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapt er=4%26section=3] from the 'Importing Images' chapter.
    Don't worry - they're not long!
You want to understand the difference between managed and referenced and eventually make you own decision. In contrast to Matthew, I'm much happier with referenced masters. You need to get a feel for the pros and cons of each approach and then decide what's right for you. Having said that, I understand that you can change (or even mix?) approaches later on if you find the need.
Some of the other chapters in the [Importing Images|http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter =4%26section=0] section might also be useful in shaping your thoughts at this stage.

  • Need help with iPhoto, Need help with iPhoto

    Hey there!!!
When I plug in my iPhone I go to iPhoto and can choose to import the pictures. I also tried Image Capture as it seemed easier to organise my pictures, making folders, sub-folders, etc. The problem with this is everytime I plug my iPhone into the computer click on Import the system automatically makes second, third, fourth, etc copies of each picture. This also means that there is a copy of my pictures on iPhoto and on Image Capture - which I do not really need.
I have tried to make Albums and Folders on iPhoto. Sometimes when I delete a picture as it has been saved in two albums it gets deleted from both albums. Why is this? How can I make Albums or Folders to organise my pictures. If my pictures are transferred directly onto iPhoto, can I find them anywhere else in my computer? If I wanted to burn pictures from various albums on a disc how could I do that on iPhoto? Also I dont want events to create themselves. How can I avoid this?
I would like help with either using iPhoto or know how the stop the duplicating of pictures on Image Capture.
Maybe there is a better way I can transfer the pictures onto my MacBook??
    Thanks a mil!!!

Are you running a "referenced" or "managed' library?
Image Capture does not store phortos in it. It's an application for uploading photos to wherever you tell it to, either a folder on the hard drive or into iPhoto. If you want to use only Image Capture to upload your photos to iPhoto then set iPhoto's General preferences to the following:
Deleting Photos from an iPhoto Library:
1 - from an Event or the Photos mode: select the photo(s) and use the Delete key to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the iPhoto Trash bin as follows:
2 - from an album, smart album, book, slideshow, card, etc.: select the photo(s) and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the trash bin.  Then empty the trash bin as above.
NOTE: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with only the Delete key only deletes that photo from that item. Deleting a photo from an Event deletes ALL occurances of that photo in the library.

  • I need help with iPhoto 9

    Hi there,
I am hoping to get some help with my iPhoto. I recently updated to lion, and then, realizing that photostream required iphoto '11, updated that too. I downloaded it from the app store, and installed it. I did not check to make sure my iphoto was up to date before installing, though i updated to lion just days before and everything was up to date after that.
So I downloaded it, installed it and clicked the upgrade button. The upgrade bar finished it's load and then closed and my iphoto side bar loaded. But the circular load icon continued circiling overnight! So I quit and tried to reload. I have tried deleting the .pst file, repairing the permissions, deleting the program and re-installing it. I CANNOT get it to worrkkk! I can't tell if I just need to let it sit longer or if the new iPhoto broke my computer!
I know lots of people have had issues with the new iPhoto, and I have tried all the suggestions I could find. I should mention that it is version 9.2 and my lion is up to date.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!
    Thanks!
    Danielle

    IIII figured it out....
I had old "projects" - photobooks, cards etc. that were for some reason blocking me.
I followed this, which i found on another apple forum.
Hope this helps whoever else is out there... clearly this is an issue for more than a few people... I hope apple is aware of this...
    i followed these steps:
Go to the library file on disk, right-click it and select "Show Package Contents." Then locate and remove the following items:
    InterruptedUpdate
    ThemeCache
    ProjectDBVersion.plist
    Projects.db
    Projects.db-journal
    then:
i repaired permissions in disk utility.
    then:
go to the /username/Library/Preferences/ folder and remove the file "com.apple.iPhoto.plist."
    Then relaunch iPhoto.
    It worked for me.

  • Need help with iPhoto '08-Photoshop CS3 Workflow

I'm relatively new to both iPhoto and Photoshop. I have already imported over 3,500 high resolution jpegs into iPhoto from my camera. I've set up iPhoto so that Photoshop is my editing program. I've read that one wants to avoid saving additional jpeg files from original jpeg files. I want to retain my original file, create an optimized (edited) version (in TIFF or PSD format) that can be edited further later if I desire, and create a lower resolution image for web/powerpoint presentations. I want all of these files to retain assigned keywords for cataloging purposes.
What I'm discovering is that iPhoto files opened in Photoshop and saved outside of iPhoto lose keyword information. I realize I can re-import these into Photoshop but I'd like to avoid having to reassign keywords. Is this possible?
Does anyone have a suggested workflow to accomplish the above?

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Need help with iPhoto 9.5.1

I just updated iPhoto to 9.5.1. When I want to share to Flickr or Facebook iPhoto want to delete picyures and albums at those sight. How can I keep this from happening?

You have to launch the upgrade and run it on your library before you can open the library with iPhoto 9.6.  It'll be located in the Applications/Utilities folder.

  • Need help with iPhoto! Can't add images!

Hello all. Just sarted using iPhoto '05 and amm trying to transfer photos from my camera and a CDR from a windows PC. It says:
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
Now, i've been doing some research on this topic, and i have NOT tampered with the iphoto folder in the finder, nor have i really done anything at all with iphoto. I don't know how to rebuild or back up my files.
However, now that I think of it, I may have (when transferring my pictures from my old iBook to this iMac), just put the folder in the finder rather than put it in iPhoto. So i'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. If it does what's the solution to THAT?

<table><tr><td align=left bgcolor="#FFFFCC"> (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data</td></tr></table>
Where are the files located that are giving you this notice? If they are inside the iPhoto Library folder then that's the reason and they must be moved out to be able to be imported.
If you are trying to copy them directly from the CD into iPhoto you may have to copy them to the Desktop first, confirm that you have read and write permissions before importing into iDVD.

  • Need help with iphoto and dragging to external hard drive

    Hello,
I have my iphoto very organized into Events and I recently just moved them to be in folders.  I would like to have only certain Events (or folders/albums) on the external hard drive.  The apple store rep said to go to Finder, Pictures, Iphoto, then right click to "Show Package Contents."  Then go to either "original" or "modified." From there I can drag into the hard drive.  However, I'm very confused because the "modified" or "original" are not organized at all by folders or events.  There are dates only.  What can I do to find, drag the events (each are named)?  Please help!
    Katie

    1. Ignore the Apple store rep.
    2. You need to clarify:
I have my iphoto very organized into Events and I recently just moved them to be in folders
Moved them to be where in folder? In iPhoto? In the FInder?
I would like to have only certain Events (or folders/albums) on the external hard drive.
In an iPhoto Library? Or in the Finder?
Do not access the Library via the Finder or any other app. You risk damaging your Library and you will lose data.
If you want to have some Events/Albums on an External Disk within iPhoto:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
If you want to have them in Folders in the Finder
Use the FIle > Export command to get photos out of iPhoto.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.

  • Now I've really done it.  I need help with iPhoto as I can't get into it at all.

I sent a request earlier regarding my MacBook Pro.  I was trying to set up both computers so that I could network, mainly wanted to send my photos from the iMac (running OS X 10.6.8 and iPhoto '08).  After some trials I got the two computers so that they appeared to be networked.  I set system preferences so that PICTURES was what would be shared between the iMac and the MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.5.8 and iPhoto '11).
I had both computers set to recognize each other, the passwords worked, and I thought that was it until I was ready to move my photos from the iMac to the MacBook Pro.  Before I knew what was going on, the MacBook got busy on its own and informed me that it was busy and that iPhotos had to do some updating because the photos (which I then assumed were the ones on the iMac) were too old as they were.  It took some time, during which I noticed that when it got to the point of updating faces there were a couple of faces I didn't think I had seen in my MacBook photos.  I let it finish what it was doing.
HERE IS MY PROBLEM:  When it finally got finished I couldn't see any new photos on the MacBook, so I went to the iMac to see what had been done there.  Big surprise!  When I went to open iPhotos I got the message "The iPhone Library is locked, on a locked disc, or you do not have permission to make a change to it."  No matter what I tried I couldn't get into it, so I don't know whether I have photos any more or not.
As luck would have it, my extended warranty for technical help expired in June 2011!

    Locked disk issue:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Need help with sed to fix migrated web site links (part II)

I thought I had this fixed, but I didn't, so starting over:
I'm moving my web files from one host to another, and have backed up my directory called WEB into my user downloads folder.  The site is dead simple, mostly links within the site, pages primarily text with some links to my photos posted on flickr, and a few outside links.  I want to avoid opening/replacing/saving a hundred or more files to fix the links from "http://www.old_domain_name/user/my_username" to "http://my_new_domain_name"
A friend suggested the following scripts to do this
      mkdir fix_urls
      cd fix_urls
      cp -r <wherever>/WEB .
      cd WEB
      xargs -0 egrep -i  old_domain_name $(find * -name "*.html" -print0) > ../to_fix
      cd ..
      less to_fix
to see what needs changing, but after I've created and moved to WEB, the xargs command results in a zero kb file called to_fix appearing in WEB, and nothing else happens....and the prompt in terminal (myusername$) doesn't reappear.
I tried his part II anyway:
      mkdir new_web
      while read filename; do
          sed 's/\/www.old_domain_name/user/my_username/\/my_new_domain_name/' < WEB/$filename > new_web/$filename
      done
      diff -r WEB new_web > what_i_did
      less what_i_did
and after the 'done', I get again....nothing.  No new cursor gray rectangle, no new prompt, haven't even gotten to the last bit of diff to review the changes.
Any tips on what fundamental bone-headed thing I'm doing wrong?
and I got this helpful answer which seemed to have solved it, but didn't entirely:
This solved my question by X423424X  on Jul 1, 2012 1:23 AM
I want to avoid opening/replacing/saving a hundred or more files to fix the links from "http://www.old_domain_name/user/my_username" to "http://my_new_domain_name"
If that's all you want to do then here's the pertinent sed command to do it:
    sed -e 's,www.old_domain_name/user/my_username,my_new_domain_name,'
Syntax is a bit simpler when you don't use slashes as the sed substitute delimiters.  You can use anything.  Here I used commas.
I got excited too quickly after the first file I clicked looked correct--the first file in the subdirectory.
I see no indication in terminal that the process is going or ending--no sense of when I can close terminal and move on.
Checking the directory in finder shows no updates to 'date modified' for any of the files.
So how do I know if it is in progress, or done working, aside from opening random files to see if they're 'done'?
I've got three subfolders inside one folder (my WEB folder), and it looks like only the first file of the first subdirectory got repaired.

Here is a bash script to interate through all files in a folder of a given extension.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
is your slideshow from an album or from the slideshow mode?
    what theme are you using?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?

  • Need help with iphoto 8 and two users on same computer

Let's me start by stating I'm brand new to Mac. My wife is putting all our photo's under her user name, but when I open my iphoto program I don't see the same photos. I thought I set up my iphoto to share from hers but I've obviously done something wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Afrergy
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter the library, then enable Sharing in your wife's iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open your account. In your account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Her Library will appear in her source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
IF you want to have the same access to the library: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the Users/Shared (or an external HD)
Make sure the file permissions are set to allow read/write access to everyone
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Need help with iphoto book.

I made one iphoto book and it turned out great! However, now I am trying to make another one and I can not get the photos to 'stick' on the page. I watched the video over and over trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've been trying to figure this out for over a week. Please help!

first - you are in edit mode - only one large page (maybe part of a second one too) on the screen?
Try quitting and restarting your computer and see if that helps
If not renew your iPhoto preference file -
A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.
