Need help with my CD DVD Drive

I'll apologize in advance, because I know this message is going to be confusing, but if you can stick with me to the end, you will understand why.
Basically, the problem is that although my Powermac G4 can read almost any commercial disk, it is unpredictable when it comes to those I have burned. But here is what's going on:
1) Until recently, I was plugging along quite happily with 2 Macs: (a) a PowerMc G4, purchased some time around 1999 and (b) an iMac G3 , which I bought about 2 years later. Also had (and still have) a Mac Notebook, which I bought around 2003-04, but until recently had only used once or twice.
2) Both the Notebook and G3 were running on OS 10.2.8, and the G4 on OS 9.2, which enabled me to continue to work with older files that I still rely on. The G3 and G4 are also networked via ethernet.
Hope I haven't lost you yet, because this is where things get confusing . . .
3) All 3 of the above Macs came with CD drives, but no two are alike. The G4 has a Matshita CD/DVD drive and software version 1.4.5., but no burner. The iMac G3 reads and burns disks, but I can't tell you the software version, because, as I'll explain next, I can't see it at this moment. But it does not read DVDs. The Notebook has a read-only drive (version 1.4.8).
4) All was well until about 8 weeks ago, when the optical drive in the G3 started sticking and finally died with a disk (that belonged to a client) in the drive. After much panic, I managed to retrieve the disk, but meanwhile had learned that the problem probably was due to the treads on the slot drive having worn out, and spoke with several repair shop techs who said it would cost in excess of $300 to repair.
Meanwhile, I had discovered the just-released Mac/ Intel, fell in love with it and decided, "What the heck, I deserve it." So I bought one and immediately started to assemble old data strewn across both the G4 and G3 for burning. At this point, I've been at it for several weeks, but right now am unable to view info because it is connected to the Mac/Intel via firewire.
Since the drive on my old G3 was kaput, I tested the first disk I burned on the G4 and breathed a sigh of relief when, after a relatively long boot up time, it finally popped up on the desktop. When the next disk I burned failed to show up at all, I suspected it might be a bad disk (even though it was a major brand name), so immediately burned another from a new pack of disks. If failed to load, too. But when I tried them on my Notebook, both appeared on the desktop within seconds.
So my question now, is where do I go from here?
Since the G4's ability to read burned CDs had always been flaky, I had figured it might have something to do with the speed of the burner. Now I'm not sure — especially since I burned the latest disks at a slow speed, and as I've descrbed, the results are still erratic. (i.e., At least one of them works on all 3 computers, including my new Mac/Intel but not the G3 with the broken drive . .. and the others only work on the Notebook and Mac/Intel.)
I've also wondered if there's been a software upgrade for the CD/DVD drive on the G4 that will work with OS 9.2. (Really don't want to upgrade that system yet . . especially since I'd like to continue using some of my older apps, which probably will not work on my newest Mac.) For the same reason (i.e., concern that it might prevent old apps from working), I've always ignored the automatic software update announcements that pop up on my screen each month — but when I checked the Apple site earlier this evening I couldn't find any anyway.
I'm hoping someone out there will know what I'm talking about and have a suggestion or two that I can try.
Thanks for your attention.

Thanks, Joseph . . .
Meant to reply yesterday, but I was busy all day, working to save and burn those files. But I did want you to know that I took your advice and picked up a Memorex laser lens cleaner disk. Contrary to the salesman's insistence when I asked, it really did seem designed more for drives that play mainly music CDs than graphics ( the only thing that interests me) . . . because tracks 5-14 all dealt with testing sound and there was no way for me to stop the process (as the narrator suggests) because that's not an option on my Mac.
Consequently, I only ran it once. But I did notice a definite improvement in how quickly icons for my burned disks appeared on my G4 desktop. Only problem was that they would not open on that computer although they do on my iBook, which also has PM 6.5 installed. And while they also show up on my Mac/Intel, it can't read them bcause it does not recognize the application — and according to what I've hust learned, NEVER will. (A warning to anyone else with a stockpile of PM documents they hope to play: Better find and learn another page layout application future Macs will read and start converting those docs asap . . . or at least before your older machine dies.)
Also tried copying the primary document (the other files just contain support data , such as graphic/photos, etc.) — but that failed, too.
So it looks like I'm back to square #1 — but still thinking the problem might somehow be related to the size of the document (139MB) even though my G4 has 920 MB ROM (vers. 8.3.1) and total hard drive space of 95 GB . . . Long ago, I also increased the recommended memory for PM from 5,200k to 50,000k. The only thing that makes me question my premise re: size is that the doc opens without difficulty on my little iMac, which only has a ROM CD drive.

  • Need help with my missing dvd-driver

I've had my MacBook Pro since 2009 and I have updated to Mac OS X, Lion and then Mountain Lion over the years.. Well, somewhere along the way I have lost my dvd driver. I don't know if it was because I installed a third part dvd driver or not but I am currently unable to burn music through iTunes. When inserting a blank cd to my macbook, iTunes does not seem to detect it. I know the newer MBPs don't have a dvd driver anymore and I don't know if any of this is related to my problem or if it's something totally different. I am wondering if I'm the only person having this issue. Please suggest options I could take to resolve this issue. Thank you.

There is no driver. Never was.

You need to set up what you want to happen when you insert a cd into your MacBook Pro(?). System Preferences>CD's & DVD's.

The new user account didn't work?
Or, the firmware flash didn't work?
I would try reconnecting the data ribbon. It is cramped and difficult to get to, but it may be some corrosion or a poor connection causing the issue.
It's worth a try, as the DVR-115 is a good drive. They don't make them any more........

  • Need help with networking external hard drive

    Hi,
I am working on a corporate network and I have a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition external hard drive attached to a Mac OSX 10.4. i have other Macs connecting through the network to this Mac and accessing the external hard drive and it works just fine for that.
What I need help with is the fact that I also have several PCs on the same network (all XP), that need to connect to the hard drive and access the files. I've been able to connect to the Mac using the XP by accessing the IP address. I also set the Mac up with password credentials so that I had to log in to the Mac to access the files. But when I try to access the Mac, it only shows the main computer drive as the only available share and no external drive.
Does anyone know how to access a Western Digital external drive on a Mac from a PC through a network?

For an external hard disk drive or other (different) system shared
storage devices to work, they probably should be formatted in a
format seen by both operating systems.
If the WD unit is not seen by Windows computers on your network,
the WD may have been formatted in HFS+ for the Macintosh. That
is OK unless you need a Windows computer to access the same.
    The Macintosh can see and use a standard Windows disc format;
so the external drive may need to be reformatted away from HFS+
if that is really what is going on (and archive any data on the suspect
drive elsewhere, since it will be lost to reformatting overwrites)
and then both Mac OS X and Windows should see the files on there.
    And Macs set up to run Windows may also see the non-Mac format;
without having to re-boot via BootCamp, if that option is in use.
As to the other question(s) I really have no idea at this point in time.
And since that may be the rub, hopefully someone will follow up here.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Need help with Raid 1 hard-drive replacement

Hello All - I hope someone can help with this.
I have a Raid 1 set-up using two 1Tb external drives (1 Seagate and 1 Lacie) which has been working perfectly - until yesterday that is. I received an error message saying the Raid 1 Set was degraded. On checking I got an error message against the Lacie HDD 'Disk failure'. Following instructions i found on Apple Support i tried to replace the failed drive with a new 1Tb drive - but then got an error message saying that the new drive was too small - on checking the original Seagate Drive reads as 999.86 Gb with the new Drive reading 999.83 Gb. I presume this is to do with formatting of the 2 drives, although one would assume (perhaps naively that as both drives are 1Tb they would be the same size when formatted!!
In light of this I ran 'verify disk' on the Raid 1 Set and this was ok and I am now attempting to rebuild the failed Lacie drive - 10 hours still to go. However even if this works I would want to replace this disk as it is quite old now. The Raid 1 Set is backed up to Time Machine on a separate HDD.
Can anyone suggest a way forward for me to swap out the old drive and replace it with the new drive that I have purchased - I can't see how exchanging this for another make would be any guarantee that the disk would be the same size? I understand that I can't replace the failed drive with a larger drive. The only other way I can see of proceeding is to buy a second new disk (same as I got today) and create a new Raid 1 set and copy everything across.
    Thanks in Advance

  • Need help with HP dv5 Hard Drive.

I believe I need to replace my hard drive for my HP dv-5.  What I need to know is can I put in any Sata 2.5HD or does it have to be the Toshiba HD that is currently installed?  I understand there could be issues going with a Western Digital with drivers maybe....???  But from a cost prospective I'm think of going with a much larger capacity HD and maybe going from 5400RPM to 7200RPM.  Currently I have 320GB and I'd love to move up to a 500GB or even a Terabyte.
The reason I believe my HD has crash is because when I start up my laptop it asks me to install the OS. I've been having issues with this laptop for some time now, it seems to loop at start up without ever loading.  And now with this OS issue I feel it to be much easier to just purchase and replace the HD.  I also have Windows Vista installed on this laptop which I feel is absolutely awful, I have Windows 7 and would love to be able to install this on my dv-5.
Additionally, I have attempted to load Windows 7 from USB flash drive onto this current dv-5 and it fails.
If anyone has any comments or suggestions, has anyone done this successfully...???
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.
    Thanks,
    -Scott

1TB drive will be too thick and will not fit in the drive bay, any size below that is OK, I suggest the Western Digital Scorpio Black Series 7200rpm drives.

  • Need help with my new optical drive

    Hey guys,
So I recently bought a new optical drive because mine had died out a long time ago and was making plans to upgrade to snow leopard (currently running 10.4.11)
So I installed it and everything and everything seems to be going right (hearing the disk spinning) so I tried a dvd with it and nothing came up, went to system profiler to ata and burning, and they found nothing. Perhaps a misconnection on the resemble? Also I noticed if I hold my eject button its to no avail as well. Either way I'm gonna open her up later on tonight and double check. But any ideas?
    My old model was a UJ-857-C and I put in a UJ-867.

    User Kappy posted these tips:
    Kappy wrote:
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • Deadline Need Help with HD VS DVD Best Quality 4.3 NTSC

I just wanted to know if I made a DVD using HD MPEG2 and handed it out to people who do not have an HD TV will they be able to watch the screen normally or will the screen be too big, text off the screen?
I Just tried to import a HD MPEG into DVD Studio Pro 4 and got an error message that said it was unsupported.
It look so much better when I experimentd with a small vewrsion of my movie. They will use NTSC more than likely or a windows computer to show to clients.
What settings are best for that?

To the best of my knowledge there are no commercially available HD DVD players. Thus, although you can create a DVD with HD material you can't view it with any set-top DVD player or on a standard TV. You'd need a computer to view the HD MPEG2 material. The display would either have to be a computer monitor or a TV that could accept high-definition output (DVI) from the computer itself.
In any case, you won't be able to create an HD DVD disc with standard DVD menus and navigation controls (at least not with DVDSP). Think of the DVD as a simple storage medium, not any form of a standard DVD video disc.

  • Need help with configuring a Printer Driver in Oracle apps

    Hi,
We have set of interfaces/concurrent jobs which are programed to send the output file to file location1. Now we need to direct the output for all these jobs to file location2. The idea is to not modify the existing code, but have configuration in place which will re-direct the output files to the new “file location2”, once the concurrent job run is complete.
We have come across “Using Dummy Printer driver” option wherein we created a dummy printer driver with arguments as below and attached this printer to all these concurrent jobs.
    mv <file location1>/$PROFILES$.TITLE <file location2>
This option is working fine if both the file locations are hard coded. But both these locations are configured in 2 separate profile options and the filepath would change from once Oracle instance to another.
We are looking for solutions where we can pass the profile option value to this printer driver instead of hardcoding it in the argument.
Also, please suggest any other solution to move the output files to a different location.
Please note that our client is on Oracle On-Demand environment (apps – 11.5.10) and hence a shell script cannot be used for this.
    Thanks,
    Kiranmayi.

    Hello Mark,
I can't support the netopia router/modem, but I would think there should be an admin guide for the configuration. If it is a modem/router and you said there is rules for allowing or blocking services, which sounds like access list you should be able to create a rule for the client you want to block on the modem/router to prevent it from talking to the internet.
If you want to insure no outside security threats can make it to the computer staticly assign an IP address but don't give it a default gateway address. The client will not be able to talk to any other network but its own. It sounds like you only have one vlan or a flat network so this should work, but if you need to be able to have this computer in the future talk to other networks internally then it isn't a viable solution. Blocking at the modem/router would be the only solution.
The SG300-08 Switch you could setup an ACL to block that client from talking to the modem/router, but the potential for causing valid traffic from being blocked in your own network grows.
To create this rule you would first
    go to Access Control
Create a MAC Base ACL (give it a meaning full name)
Create 2 a MAC BASE ACE
    Rule 1
    Priority 10
    Action Deny
    Destination Any
    Source User Defined
MAC address of client wanting to be blocked
    Apply
    Rule 2
    Priority 20
    Action Permit
    Destination Any
    Source Any
    Apply
Bind the ACL to a port
Make sure to only bind the ACL to the port that connects to the router/modem.

My standoffs are built into my case. My question is really a question about grounding my motherboard. I guess I should have clarified.
My question is, my moterboard is only touching metal at these standoffs, is that how the motherboard is grounded? Or, is this going to fry my board?
From other posts I have looked at, this seems fine and how the motherboard is suppose to be grounded. But, I am scared I am going to fry my new computer and don't want to make that mistake. So, I was just wondering if it is proper for the motherboard to be touching at the standoffs, of is that wrong?

    hard drive moving parts
Some of the common reasons for hard drives to fail:
Infant mortality (due to mfg. defect / build tolerances)
    Bad parking   (head impact)
Sudden impact /head crash  (hard drive jarred during operation, heads can bounce)
Electrical surge   (fries the controller board, possibly also causing heads to write the wrong data)
Bearing / Motor failure   (spindle bearings or motors wear during any and all use, eventually leading to HD failure)

  • Need help with my serial ata drive

Ok.  I have has a series of issues and am now just back online.  Here is my main problem at this point.
I have a dual boot running on a wd raptor 36gig.
I updated my bios to 2.30 from 1.0 and this drive disapeared.
I managed to get it back by changes in bios.
I had my powersupply fail 1 day later (odd I know) but with trouble shooting this very odd failure I cleared my cmos (it didnt just fail it was a slow death that took about 6 hours).
So here I am with a new powersupply a cleared cmos and a fresh xp running on another hard disk.  I can see the raptor I can see all my files but I want to boot from that disk again.  I have read the sticky on raid setup and I did f6 when installing this os on this drive.   I also checked the device manager and dont see the intel raid controllers when I try to install them from the msi driver disk they tell me my hardware is wrong.  Does this mean they are already installed and its confused?
Any ideas how I can get it to boot?  Thanks for the time.

Ok i figured it out.  From diggin in this forum I found that the boot files have been loaded onto a older ide drive when I did the install of xp on my raptor.  I will do some digging to see about moving those files over or what but I have the old disk back in now.  It's funny how stable a system can be and how 1 problem can snowball into a few more ;p  I love this board though
