Need help with reformatting to GUID partition so I can install Snow Leopard

I'm trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard, but since I replaced my hard drive last year, it was automatically formatted to Apple Partition Map, I'm not sure of the proper way to fix this.
I have Time Machine running with an external 500gb drive, the same size as my upgraded internal drive. What procedures should I use to safely back up ALL of the information currently on my computer, reformat the main drive, then restore all of my current information to the new style partition? I have 5-6000 photos, as well as 1500-2000 mp3 files I hate to lose. Should I back these up separately to a DVD or something first?
Any help, step by step, would be helpful, as I'm not very experienced with such matters.

The brute-force approach would be to buy an external disk drive and use use Carbon Copy Cloner (http://www.bombich.com/) or SuperDuper! (http://www.shirt-pocket.com/) to create a bootable "clone" of your disk. Then verify that you can boot from the "clone", reformat your internal drive, then use the same software as above to copy your files back to the internal drive.

A utility like GrandPerspective is a good one for seeing what is taking up space on your hard drive.
Video and photo files tend to take up a lot of room.

So I have an older mac, and I am looking to sell it because I want to upgrade to a pro. I would like to reformat the hard drive so all my accounts/files/programs/settings are removed, but I do not have the installation CD's that came with the computer. Can anyone advise if there is any other way to do this or get around using the CD's?

Hi dpgomes, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Legally you need to include the Install Disc with the Computer if it has that OS Installed.
You could use another Mac with Firewire to Format & Zero the Disk, but who'd buy a Mac with no OS?
You could removes all your settings passwords, & such by doing this...
Make a new Admin User in Accounts, log out of this account, login to the new Admin account and delete the old account, then use Disk Utility to "Erase Free Space" on the Hard Drive.

Has need for GUID partition crept in even for Snow Leopard

I bought this MBP 5,2 with Mountain Lion installed, but damaged probably by inept erasure or possibly wonky internal HDD
I never wanted 10.8 as I have a lot of important Rosetta/32 bit stuff. I was briefed to totally erase HDD and re-install, which after some difficulty I did using a Snow Leopard disk, & it ran fine for a week or so, when HDD totally failed. I carried on using the MBP while waiting for a new HDD booting from a Super-duper back up external HDD (made on a 2008 15" MBP), an arrangement that also worked well with our other Unibody 15" MBP whereby my wife ran her Queendom from the internal HDD, while I ran mine from the external
I 'restored' the new HDD from this same back-up, but could no longer use either HDD as a start-up disk. So I used original Install disk to try to install 10.6 (which previously hadn't worked at all). This time it stalled with instruction for a GUID partition, which I made in Disk Utility from the DVD. I was then able to complete the clean install which it followed up with instructions to import my data. However it would no longer allow use of the external HDD as a start-up disk.
So the final stage was to do a new Super-duper back up of the external HDD disk. All a little hairy with my last 15 years work at risk.
Can someone explain why the need for the GUID partition has come in (and when)? Is it just so one can install 10.8 later; when I first got the machine a partition seemed to be holding restore data? (but was insisting I sign up and pay up for my own lion)

So refusing to install may have a different reason from refusing as a start-up? And an external HD acceptable as a start-up with one internal HDD arrangement may not be acceptable with another?
Are HDDs marketed as 'for apple' just pre-partitioned accordingly, but otherwise no different?
If one erases the device as opposed to just a volume by mistake does that mean the partition has to be re-introduced?

To unZip a folder of files, you need to use a decompression utility such as WinZip, StuffIt or 7-UP. Do you have either of those on your system? If not get one & install it now.
Open ZIP in your utility and EXTRACT all contents to your DW Local Site Folder. If you have not defined a Local Site Folder in DW yet, do that now by going to Site > New Site.

Problem with iphoto 09 (lost all faces/locat) when installing Snow leopard

Hi,
Before updating to the new snow leopard I did a back up using time machine so I am safe with regards to all photos I have. I first use to use Aperture 2 but found it not useful and when Iphoto 09 came I bought it and imported all photos from Aperture library to iphoto.
I then spent days and days updating the face recognition and also updated the locations on all photos, I have about 10000 photos so it took a while..Then I made a back up with everything and updated to the new snow leopard. Now all my faces and locations are gone. The photos are still in the old aperture library but I really do not want to spend another 3 days or so updating all the faces again.
Also one small issue, I am not able to update my aperture to version 2.1.4 as when I click on aperture it says you have version 2.1 and it is not compatible with snow leopard. tried to download the 2.1.4 but that also does not allow me to update...
Any idea on what to do??

Where is Aperture? All the Apple apps need to be where the installer puts them. In the case of Aperture that's loose in the Applications Folder, not in a sub-folder and not anywhere else.

Need help with importing data in partition table

DB:8.1.7
OS: win 2003 server
I have a table which is 4.5GB in size. I created a new partition table,with local indexes. I exported the original table with all indexes,triggers and procedures.
After creating the empty partitioned table,i imported the dump file. The data isn't loaded. My questions are:
1) Will the indexes be overwritten?
2) Will the data go automatically in allocated partitions?
3) Do i need to export only table data ignoring indexes,triggers etc?

I just want to type something in Adobe Illustrator and rastersize the image so I can upload onto a transfer designing site to have a transfer made of the image. How do I do that?

I'm not sure what your skill level is, so please forgive these instructions if they are too simplistic.
1) Type some text using the Type tool, highlighted in the image below:
2) Go to File > Export.
3) And, like Steve said, select the file format the transfer designing site indicates.

i checked the online help on how to make a color tint.
but the solution tells me if i don't have the "t-slider" make sure the color is checked
as global then go to show options
but this is not helping. i still don't see what i need to make a tint.
i really wish the way to make this work was more like indesign.

You need to make the color a swatch first. Then double click the swatch and check the Global box.

Hi all, I have this annoying problem and I am looking for any suggestions.
I have 2 select boxes. One is for all available users, and second - for selected users (designated as admins). The list of all users is available in a collection (2 properties userId and userName displayed in the code below). The list of admins contains only userId (as strings).
I have no problem with populating selected users (admins) list, reusing pretty much the same logic below, but I cannot find a way to break out from the nested loop once the match is found, to avoid repetitions leading to incorrect display of results.

Need help with BES 10 activation error: "Device activation can't be completed because the setup process or a training tutorial is running"

Hi All,
I am having a hard time finding any info on this activation error, and I really can't get to the bottom of it. When I enter my companie's activation code for the BES 10 network, it gives me the following message:
" Device activation can't be completed because the setup process or a training tutorial is running on your device. Try again later."
It would be nice if the msg could be a little more specific! But anyway, I have tried all the traditional fixes, battery pulls, re&re to BES, etc. but still nothing. My last option is to wipe and see if that works but curious to see if anyone has run into this before.
PS I have a Z10 STL100-3

I am writing from my computer at work. I have been working here since May and have been asked to install the full versions of CS6 MANY times now. I work for a few days and then the count down pops up saying my trial has ended. I am not working in a trial version - in fact I never was. The IT dept. here has un-installed and re-installed the CS6 complete versions onto my computer about 4 times now. We also "checked for updates". None of these things seem to be working. And then today to find out that no phone support to being offered to CS users any longer - only Cloud users - I am very disappointed. We have tried every single thing there possibility could be to fix this. I use Photoshop and Illustrator every day at work and I can not afford to be locked out of the programs because the trial has ended again and again and again. Please help ASAP.

Try this:
Make sure IOS is updated to latest version

Reboot device by pressing both the home button and sleep/wake (power) buttons at the same time for 10-15 seconds until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings (or for network connection issues 'reset network settings').
(no media or data will be deleted from the device, this will only take a minute).
If that doesn't work then backup and then restore the device as new first (to isolate cause of the issue). Then from backup if necessary.
