Need help with replacing hard drive please

Can I upgrade to a hard drive that has SATA 3 interface with my Macbook Pro mid 2009 model?

It may well work and be backward compatible as jk said, however your machine was spec'd for one type of drive. For me, even if the older technology for the same capacity was slightly more in cost, I'd want to put that in my machine rather than something that may not be fully compatible. Just my opinion.

    My hard drive has stopped working on this computer and since i only purchased it on 10/2012 I really don't want to replace it just yet.  I am trying to buy a new hard drive but I would like a Seagate.  I want to upgrade from  1 TB to 2TB.  I was wondering if there is a Seagate product out there that would be compatable with the original hard drive but in 2 TB.The original hard drive is a HDD GNRC 1 TB SATA 3 ECO 7200 rpm 3.5".  I was looking at a Seagate 2TB SATA 6.0 but I do not know is the SATA 6 will work with the original SATA 3.  Can you please help me or guide me in the right direction for a replacement.  I also have the HP recovery CD's coming to me in the mail.Thanks,GinaCee

  • Need help with total hard drive replacement and reinstall

    Hello everyone, let me first say thank you for all the help I hope I get. I have a HP Envy 14 1260se Beats Edition Laptop and I recently purchased a new SSD which really made my laptop speedy. The only problem I am having is that I purchased the recovery disks from HP so I could get all the drivers and everything restored but it does not work at all. So I used a windows 7 professional iso disk my friend had and installed windows (64 bit) and everything works perfectly, but I am missing the volume controls that show up on the screen. Usually when I press volume up or down using the keys on my keyboard it would show a bar in the middle of the screen telling me where my volume is. Now I just see the little volume icon in the taskbar which is just a little annoyance. Also I no longer have the beats on off button working. Is there a way I can download these little things to make my laptop almost the same as it was out of the box without all the bloatware? Any help would be appreciated and sorry in advance if this is confusing.
    This question was solved.

    Hi:
    I don't know about the Beats audio thing but I think you need the HP OSD utility to get the volume control to show up on the screen.

    The probable reason the recovery disks didn't work is your SSD was of a smaller capacity than the mechanical HDD the notebook originally came with.
    They won't work normally on any hard drive that is smaller than the one the PC came with.

  • Need help with external hard drive!

    Hi all,
    I have been having trouble with my external hard drive.
    My mac is reading the disk however all my files from the hard drive are missing?
    In disk utility is seems to show that there are files on the disk but I cannot see them?
    At the bottom is shows that there are files on the disk!
    PLEASE HELP!!!!
    Here is a screenshot of my disk utility

    Ok just to clarify the format issue...
    Just move the data from the external drive, format and then move it back if you want, as JiveMasterT explained.
    If the external drive is FAT file system, then you don't need to format the drive unless you are planning on using the drive as an OSX backup.

  • Help with external hard drive please????

    I am ready to chuck my computer out of the window I am so frustrated!! I really hope someone can help... Fingers crossed, here goes...
    I have two macs - a MacBook running OSX 4.11 and an iBook G4 running OSX 3.9. I also have an Iomega external hard drive. I reformatted it when I bought it for the MacBook, and have been using it fine.
    Now, I want to move a load of music from my iBook to the external hard drive. But when I plug in the hard drive, the iBook says 'MAC OSX CANNOT READ THE VOLUMES INSERTED' and gives me options of initialize, cancel, or eject.
    I don't want to initialize as I'm assuming this will re-re-format the ex hd and lose the stuff I have on there already.
    Is this the case?
    Why won't the Iomega talk to the iBook? (the Iomega website says macs need no drivers for their products...)
    Can anyone think of any genius ideas for getting the info off the iBook? Bearing in mind that there is no DVD writer, my internet connection is a teeny 2mb/s and the largest alternative storage device I have is a 2 gigabyte photo card (which i have been using, painstakingly, but is causing me massive grief by taking all night to upload from the ibook and then all day to transfer to the hard drive via the macbook, and losing a bunch of files in the process => AAAAAGH!!!!!). I've also tried firewiring the ibook and macbook together but they don't recognise each other. I created a network and accessed the iomega from the ibook via that but the 2mb/s broadband was so slow it would have taken all week, and the machines crashed anyway.
    Thoughts? Ideas? Inspiration? Magic wand????
    THANKS

    Ok, deep breath & relax...
    What format & partition table is the drive in?
    On the macbook with drive installed, Open up Mac HD/Applications/Disk Utility.app
    Select the drive from the list. If the partition scheme is GUID, then 10.3 won't be able to see it.
    & changing requires a reformat of the drive.
    So, what I would do is hold T while booting the macbook until the firewire logo shows on the screen. plug the 2 macs together via firewire 400 cable. your macbook should now show up as a firewire drive on the ibook.
    drag & drop the files you want to move. eject the drive when done & press power on the macbook to exit this mode. press power again to boot.

  • Need Help with External Hard drives and too much music

    I am not terribly tech-savvy, and I need your help. I have a G5 PPC dual processor with an internal 250GB drive. I have two seagate firewire/USB2 external hard drives. One is 250GB and one is 350GB. I want to know how to use them to get my Mac to run faster and better.
    My original hard drive is 7GB shy of being full. Almost half of this is my itunes library which is over 100GB. The older (250GB) hard drive has about 150GB of photos/videos.
    My Mac is running slow as molasses and when I power up the external hard drives it slows down to what I recall my original Mac Plus ran like.
    I use the G5 primarily to work with photos, illustrations and creating the occasional DVD with video and photos. the apps I use most often are Photoshop, Illustrator and Painter. I always listen to music while work.
    I hope all of this information is helpful! Here is my question:
    What is the best way for me to set up and use these external hard drives to return my G5 to its original blazing (to me) fast speed?
    PPC G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    I think you should look at adding two 500GB internal drives. I'd say Maxtor MaxLine Pro for cost, but they also run much warmer (43ºC even when nearly doing zilch) so I'd go with WD RE2 500GB for $40 ea. more.
    dump whatever you don't need, trash anything that is hogging space and is just temp file or useless cache. Web browsers can leave behind a ton of small files eating up tens of MBs.
    Use SuperDuper to backup/clone your drive.
    Disk Warrior 4 to repair (after it gets to 15% free, or just forget for now).
    A 250GB drive formats to 240GB and you have ~3% free it looks like.
    For every data drive plan to have two backup drives.
    Keep your boot drive to 40% used.
    And your data drive to 60%.
    Backups can go a little higher.
    Drives are cheap and inexpensive, especially for the space and performance. And they have improved SATA over the years it has been out.
    By doing a backup followed by erasing your drive, and then restoring it, using SuperDuper, which optimizes the organization, skips copying temp files that aren't needed, it also defragments your files. I would do backup daily to different sets that you "rotate." And before any OS update. And do the erase and restore probably every 2 months.
    Make sure you keep one drive partition somewhere that is just your disk utility emergency boot drive that is not a copy of working system, used for doing repairs like running Disk Warrior and Disk Utility.
    You may need to repair; backup; even erase and restore your external drives. Rather than spend on vendor made case, just pick up a good FireWire case either with drive, or bare (and add your own). I think it'd add 500GB FW drive though.
    Why?
    To begin backup of your current drive. To leave your other FW drives "as is" for now.
    Then install a new internal 500GB drive as well so you now have a good current backup, and you have moved your data off 250GB to 500GB. If anything happens, you have one off line FW backup.
    Then begin to clean up, organize, and get your FW drives working. It sure sounds like they have had some directory or file problems.
    You can find a lot of Firewire and SATA drive choices over at OWC:

  • Help with new Hard drive Please!!

    HI
    I have a K8n Neo that i have been running fine with a 80GB edie hard drive that has been running fine for the last 3 months.
    But i decided to upgrade to a SATA hard drive ( Samsung 160gb spinpoint )
    So i fitted the hard drive connected all ok!
    But when i try to load windows xp pro i get a error!
    It says:-
    An error occurred while setup was updating partition information on:
    131070 mb disk0 at id0 on bus0 on atapi [MBR] set-up cannot continue??
    I do not think it can be the hard drive as this is the secound one that i have tried!
    Can someone PLEASE help me before i go MAD!!
    Lots of thanks
    Numpty 69

    numpty,
    the following steps helped me to seamlessly migrate from IDE to a 160 GB SATA Maxtor.
    First of all I hope you still have your old IDE HD set-up as a bootable device with OS installed. Unplug your SATA drive and revert to your old PATA drive as boot.
    Second,  shut down your computer, plug in your new SATA drive and follow this thread for single SATA drive set-up Single SATA or Multiple Drive Array Setup FAQ
    save and exit BIOS, re-boot and enter BIOS again. You should now see your SATA drive in the boot order.
    Except: I do not see from your specs whether you run XP with SP2. If not, you ran into the issue of the 128 GB limit and XP will not recognize your drive.
    Do not set it as boot yet. For me, it even worked out to turn off SATA RAID again.
    Third, boot OS from PATA drive. XP should now recognize your new SATA drive and start installing the SATA drivers (I used the nForce 5.10 and had no issues). Re-boot into OS, you should now see all drives with proper drivers installed in the hardware tab.
    Fourth, get yourself a HD cloning tool. I used True Image 8.0 but there should be enough freeware cloning tools around, maybe even from the HD manufacturer itself and clone your old PATA drive to the new SATA.
    Fifth, re-boot into BIOS and set the SATA drive as boot now. Save and exit BIOS, re-boot and XP should now be starting from the SATA drive.
    Hope it works, I keep my fingers crossed

  • Need help with second hard drive on mac G4

    I recently took apart another computer and installed the hard drive on top of the "master" drive hoping I would be able to download more videos, music ect but when i try and download anything message pops outs that my disk is almost full i need help as you can see. I thought all i had to do was connect the drive but I guess that wasn't it.

    chuck818, welcome to Apple Discussions.
    What size is your Master HD & how much free space do you have? Are you getting messages about the HD being full?
    Insufficient HD space can lead to many problems - freezes, directory/file corruption, etc.

    I have a macbook that needs a new hard drive and need help knowing what hard drives to buy that will be compatible with it. It is a macbook pro 17inch model no: A1297.
    Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

    Any 2.5" diameter, 9.5mm thick SATA drive will be compatible.  Currently they come up to 1.5 TB in capacity.  I have a 1 TB Seagate SSHD (hybrid) drive installed in my primary MBP.  The cost is a modest premium over a conventional HDD of the same capacity.  Boot and shutdown times are significantly faster when compared to a conventional HDD,  I can recommend this as an option.
    If the bank account permits, an SSD will produce the overall maximum performance gains.  Boot, shutdown and resource hungry applications will be noticeably faster.  Casualyll use such as e-mails and text editing will produce no meaningful performance differences compared to a conventional HDD.
    I am of the opinion that the cost premium is still too high for the benefits that they afford.  Other have different views.
    Ciao.

  • New to the forums, not new to Mac. Need help on failing hard drive.

    Hello, glad to have found this forum...I need all the help I can get. Let me explain what I have, what it's doing, what I want it to do, what I "think" I need to do.
    *What I have:*
    733 G4 with superdrive, 512 MB SDRAM, 40 & 60 gig internal original hard drives
    *What it is doing:*
    For about a year one of the drives (seems to be my 60g start-up drive) has made clicking/popping noises not unlike when you click/cluck your tongue. I've ignored it, foolishly, and gone about my business. Then I began having to click the mouse and punch keys when I start-up in order to get the drive to begin spinning, otherwise it would never kick in and I'd get the "?" face. Anyway, I have been living like that for many months until recently when my start-up drive only had about 500MB left of space, I burned some DVD's and freed up about 6 gig on the drive for some cushion the other day. Well, since doing that, when I start up now I get a spinning globe. I have to hold the option key down at boot and then select the drive manually and I'm back to being fine again.
    *What I want it to do:*
    I'm freaked out about losing data because I am a photographer and graphic designer, so I would die if I lost any files. I have been using one of my old iPods as a back up drive to dump data on and burning some DVD's too...but still, I have most of my life still on the drive. Here is what I am considering. I would like to get an external drive to move and continue to grow my massive files for my work and creativity. I'm thinking the G-Tech 320 Quad external would be a good fit. Now, moving back inside, my 60g start-up is telling me it's failing and to back up and replace before...well, you know. My 2nd internal drive is 40g and is strictly my iTunes library of MP3s.
    How do I save myself and replace my start-up drive?
    Do I buy the G-Tech first, move all my files over, then replace the internal, failing 60g? Can I start-up from the G-Tech? Should I/Can I make my 40g the temporary start-up, replace the failing 60g, and go from there? How should I do this and must I get the G-Tech now?
    While on this same question, I am getting conflicting information regarding how much my 733 G4 will recognize as far as each drive size. What is the max size each drive can be? What is the max combined?
    *What I think I should do:*
    I think I should buy the G-Tech, move my life over there, then use the working 40g as my start-up, replace the failing 60g with the largest possible when possible, make the replacement internal the start-up again, use or replace the working/existing 40g as storage/back-up, live happily ever after.
    *And on a side note:*
    I plan to drop two sticks of 512MB memory, this filling it up to it's max 1.5 gig of memory. Will this have a noticeable affect on my computer? If so, how?
    Oh, and the reason I was opting for the Quad G-Tech is because can't I upgrade and add FW800 ports to my G4 rather easily?
    Thank you for any time or effort you give me in helping me through this urgent matter. I had run out of places to go and people to ask before running across this forum.

    First of all I cannot believe you have no backup strategy and only start to worry about it after problems arise. You're an accident waiting to happen. Before you consider anything make backups.
    Basic Backup
    Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
    Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
    Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
    You can begin addressing the problems with your hard drive(s) after you get your stuff properly backed up. Once that's done get two larger drives for the computer and replace the small ones you now have. Your model should support hard drives up to 128 GBs in size. There is not specific limit on external drives so your external backup drive can be large enough to be partitioned into multiple volumes large enough to backup at least one of the internal drives (using the second internal drive as a backup for the first internal drive. This provides redundancy - an internal and an external backup.) You can then use the additional space on the external drive for your data files.
    BTW, you risk catastrophic data loss by allowing the free space on your startup volume to drop below 3 GBs.

  • Need help getting my hard drive data switched

    I finally got a replacement hard drive from Hitachi today, and am anxious to fire up my copy of Leopard. However, I have to get the data from the tiny one in my computer right now to the large one I'm about to put in. I have an external hard drive to work with, but no enclosure. Does anyone know how to get my system data from my current hard drive to an external hard drive to another hard drive?
    Thanks

    You need some way to connect the drive to the computer. Either an external adaptor or an empty enclosure you can put the new drive into. Once you have that, you can clone the internal to the new drive and then swap the drives.

  • Need help with threads?.. please check my approach!!

    Hello frnds,
    I am trying to write a program.. who monitors my external tool.. please check my way of doing it.. as whenever i write programs having thread.. i end up goosy.. :(
    first let me tell.. what I want from program.. I have to start an external tool.. on separate thread.. (as it takes some time).. then it takes some arguments(3 arguments).. from file.. so i read the file.. and have to run tool.. continously.. until there are arguments left.. in file.. or.. user has stopped it by pressing STOP button..
    I have to put a marker in file too.. so that.. if program started again.. file is read from marker postion.. !!
    Hope I make clear.. what am trying to do!!
    My approach is like..
    1. Have two buttons.. START and STOP on Frame..
    START--> pressed
    2. check marker("$" sign.. placed in beginning of file during start).. on file..
         read File from marker.. got 3 arg.. pass it to tool.. and run it.. (on separate thread).. put marker.. (for next reading)
         Step 2.. continously..
    3. STOP--> pressed
         until last thread.. stops.. keep running the tool.. and when last thread stops.. stop reading any more arguments..
    Question is:
    1. Should i read file again and again.. ?.. or read it once after "$" sign.. store data in array.. and once stopped pressed.. read file again.. and put marker ("$" sign) at last read line..
    2. how should i know when my thread has stopped.. so I start tool again??.. am totally confused.. !!
    please modify my approach.. if u find anything odd..
    Thanks a lot in advance

    Hello,
    I have no experience with threads or with having more than run "program" in a single java file. All my java files have the same structure. This master.java looks something like this:
    ---master.java---------------------------------------------------
    import java.sql.*;
    import...
    public class Master {
    public static void main(String args []) throws SQLException, IOException {
    //create connection pool here
    while (true) { // start loop here (each loop takes about five minutes)
    // set values of variables
    // select a slave process to run (from a list of slave programs)
    execute selected slave program
    // check for loop exit value
    } // end while loop
    System.out.println("Program Complete");
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println("Error: " + e);
    } finally {
    if (rSet1 != null)
    try { rSet1.close(); } catch( SQLException ignore ) { /* ignored */ }
    connection.close();
    -------end master.java--------------------------------------------------------
    This master.java program will run continuously for days or weeks, each time through the loop starting another slave process which runs for five minutes to up to an hour, which means there may be ten to twenty of these slave processes running simultaneously.
    I believe threads is the best way to do this, but I don't know where to locate these slave programs: either inside the master.java program or separate slave.java files? I will need help with either method.
    Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Need help with flash player installation please !!!!

    Hello,
    I need help with my flash player installation because every time I access a movie this is the message I receive.
    This content on Xfinity TV is not available for viewing with Chrome's "Incognito" mode. To play this video using Chrome, please view this page without "Incognito" mode.
    Still having problems? Try resetting your Flash player license.

    Incognito mode is a Google Chrome setting when you open a new window (Cmd+Shift+N on a Mac Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows) It opens a "private" window with no cookies and no tracking. The problem with it is that when you disable cookies, your license files are not sent to the site (whetehr it's YouTube or xFinity or any other that uses license files for paid content)  and it treats you as if you're a first time visitor. Paid videos won't play wihtout the cookies sending the license file info.
    This isn't a Flash Player setting. It's in Chrome. I did some research and according to Google, "Incignito" mode is off by default, and can ONLY be activate by the keyboard shortcut. There IS a way to disable it from the registry http://dev.chromium.org/administrators/policy-list-3#IncognitoModeAvailability
