Need high capacity DVD-R burner for high-capacity DVDs

I need to start burning high capacity DVDs, but they are only available (that I can find) in DVD+R. Per my profile, my drive burns only DVD-R, so I'm looking for a mac-compatible external drive that will burn DVD+R's.
Does anyone know of a source for these?
Thanks.

Agreed on the Pioneer, and the media. Add Taiyo Yuden as desirable media.
Ditto on the Taiyo Yuden. Usually availably only through online retailers.
OS X Leopard supports burning to DVD-R DL, but doesn't support DVD+R DL.
The output for my DVR-110D in System Profiler shows DVD+R DL as supported:
*PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110D:*
Firmware Revision: 1.41
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2000 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

If you want Muse to "pass through" your images and not adjust, compress, crop etc - you need to place your images in the lightbox EXACTLY at the right size, pre-cropped and prepped in Photoshop.
So if your light box is 800x600 the image you're dropping into that must be 800x600 exactly with no effects, rotation etc added to the lightbox frame. This stop Muse fiddling with your images, if they are perfect when inserted and you're not asking Muse to crop, expand, add effects etc. If it's perfect when inserted, Muse SHOULD also leave the resolution alone too, but I have not tried that one, but in theory, it should work.

There are plenty of options but I have found that the LaCie d2 http://blu-ray.burnworld.com/burners/lacie-d2.htm works more consistantly. I use Toast 11 mainly for Blu-Ray. The drive does come with a basic verison of the software which is good for most but you need to upgrade to do some serious authoring.

  • Re: DVD/CD burner for my Ideapad s10

I have the LiteOn drive and it works fine, recognized by the S10 every time, upon booting and also when just plugged in after booting. It can operate off USB ports (needs two when drawing power from the computer) but also comes with a separate power supply in which case it just uses one USB port.

You can get an external USB DVD drive for less money but the cheaper ones are big and clunky, this one is very slim and easily transported.

If I were you, I would order or pick up a USB CD/DVD drive.  It's going to be cheaper and you'll be able to use it with multiple devices in the long run.

Are current ide optical drives (Pioneer 110, for example) supported at all under OS9.2? Not too bothered about iTunes etc support but do need Finder read and Toast burning support.

Booted into OS 9.2. Had to install Toast 5.1.3 from CD as I have not installed the program while started from my 9 volume. Used 110D to install. Restarted machine and burnt CD at 32x. Burn successful. Did not try a DVD-R.

  • Does BC4J need high network bandwidth ?

    Hi,
Recently i've done some development with BC4J and test it out against another vendor (BEA,IBM).
Our test scenario is using 5 PC, each running some applications.
    for LAN : i run 30 applications in each PC ( 5 PC x 20 applications = 100 Applications Concurrent )
    for Modem 64 Kbps : i run 1 applications in each PC ( 5 PC x 1 applications = 5 Applications Concurrent )
    Problem:
for LAN the result is fine, but for Modem 64 Kbps i have to increase the concurrent applications since the number of applications is still to small( 5 ),when i monitor the network usage,it seems that my application used all available bandwidth (64Kbps) at apprx.7 concurrent applications.
    Questions:
is BC4J need high bandwidth ? or where should i look to tune my applications to use lower bandwidth ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ricky HP

    Hi Shay,
    sorry for late respons..
finally we have finished the POC (Prove Of Concept) session, and comes out with one big question why bc4j require high network bandwidth.
Weblogic team is doing good, they have good performance and good usage of network. But the good news is our client want to use Oracle ADF Framework as their development tools. :)
so here i am, i have to solve about this network bandwidh usage issue.
to answer your question about architecture:
In last POC process,we developed simple client(without gui).
the bc4j components is placed in another linux machine with Oracle 10g Java Edition installed,so the communication between client and bc4j is made through RMI/JNDI,and the communication is made using dial up connection with limited bandwidth network ( 64Kbps modem)
client program is design to loop for several times,to call method in bc4j components.we calculate the time before method is called and after the method is called.
BC4J has good performance but lack in usage network bandwidth.
i've read steve muench tips and tricks for tuning, but seems didn't help a lot in limited network bandwidth environment.
    Any help will be appreciated.
Sorry again for late response and thanks a lot

  • Dual Layer DVD Burner for Mac OS 9

I always figured that the 1 hour burn limit imposed by iDVD was done intentionally to help sell DVD Studio Pro. Now having bought a copy of DVD Studio, I find that the limitation is actually imposed by the number of layers a burner is capable of writing.
My research leads me to believe that Apple released a dual layer burner for the MacBook but no mention of its comaptibility for other models.
So is there a dual layer burner available for other model Macs and equally important will it work with Mac OS 9.2.2?

Funny, the link provided and researched before posting here does show
the MCE drive* to fully support Apple software without Roxio and has a
30 day guarantee if for any reason (including no evidence of failure)
they will replace or refund your money. Less installation fees, if any.
The primary issue, from your perspective, is the need to run OS 9.2.2
and presumably boot native and burn with it. Otherwise, the product
will perform as indicated in their write-up.
{A call to Other World Computing is recommended, to see if they have
    or know of a hardware replacement for what you specifically need.}
What they do say, in several places, indicating proper interface with
the Mac OS X system and applications, is:
    *An MCE Exclusive (10.4+ required)
    iLife '05+
Seamless integration with iLife, Mac OS X
The MCE 16X Internal SuperDrive Upgrade with Double Layer support is seamlessly compatible
with all of Apple's iApps including iTunes, iDVD, and iPhoto. In addition, it is compatible with Finder
Burning and DVD Studio Pro, Apple's professional DVD Authoring software.
These are often a choice for replacement hardware in out-of-warranty units.
And they often supersede the earlier hardware they replace, or match many
specs in new environments, depending on what product application's compared.
The earlier link to search results and product info direct from quality vendor sources
is a recommended path; call the actual company (note names of duration in resale)
or contact a regional or local parts vendor or authorized Apple repair center.
MCE's product, as listed, will do the job in OS X. It may work with Classic9 under X.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Rate SONY 820 UL/T DVD burner for burning iMovies-what's better?

I have an iMac G5 with internal CD burner, but not DVD burner. I do have the iDVD and iMovie software--so I installed this external driver to burn iMovie projects and after hours of messing around with my blessed iMac G5 and mystified SONY support techs finally learned it won't burn iMovie or Quicktime movies with Mac software bundle it comes with (Roxio Toast Lite 6..) Should I send back driver and get something else, or stick with it and upgrade to Toast 7? I am frustrated since the Sony/Mac software bundle leads you to believe you CAN burn your videos.

    Hello Artcart,
the main difference between iDVD and Toast is, that iDVD is primarily an authoring software (it authors the structure of the DVD with possibility of multiple menus, movies/slideshows) while Toast is a disc burning app ( with the possibility of encoding movies for DVD).
If you look through the iDVD discussion board you'll find that most users adopt the "divide and conquer" method:
    1. Author the DVD in iDVD because it gives you more choices for menus etc.
    2. Create a disk image (a file that behaves like a DVD, but is stored on your HDD)
    3. Burn the image file to DVD with Toast (more reliable for burning)
I should be able to select/drag my (NTSC formatted) iMovie project into Toast and the SONY drive will indeed burn a nice DVD for me?
Absolutely. Toast does the encoding, but offers you only a very simple menu (start-up screen). if that is sufficient for you, you can do without iDVD.
To add this: I've been using an external LaCie burner for the last 2 years to create DVDs for a living, and have had a very low failure rate .... no worries
I am not sure what "menu" selection you mean--the "play" title menues offered in iDVD?
    Yep.
    hope this helps

  • Best External dvd burner for dual layer disks?

    Hi everyone,
At some point my internal dvd burner in my mac book pro died, and apple replaced it. After that, I couldn't burn a dual layer disk. They've changed it twice more to accomodate me (the genius bar is awesome), but I still only have mediocre results. No problem burning regular dvds or cds. So I wondered is there a REALLy good external burner for DVD-DL that you have experience with? Thanks!

A good bootable multi-interface enclosure (empty) for an external CD/DVD drive will run about US$70.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MRSFW8U2RF/
They also sell SATA drives pre-installed in that same enclosure.
Many users find installing an internal drive themselves no more difficult than doing a memory upgrade themselves.
Others prefer not to work inside their computer.
Based on your graphics card and the original drive, I expect your Mac Pro is an older model. All before 2009 accept an ATA INTERNAL drive such as this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/superdrive/Mac_Pro_Xeon
That page also has a video of how to install a replacement DVD drive.

  • I need an external DVD burner!

Does anybody know of a external superdrive or burner for a mac mini?
I don't really feel like taking a putty knife to it so it has to be USB/FireWire, and compatible with leopard.

Not only would you avoid taking a putty knife to your mini, but by adding an external drive rather than replacing the internal, you will typically get a drive with better performance and reliability.
Have a look at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/ for a variety of options, but note that for full compatibility you may need to download and install PatchBurn. If so, it can be found at http://www.patchburn.de/ - the author notes it does not appear to be required under Leopard.

I bought the external DVD player/burner for my Macbook.  I tried using it with my Dell laptop but it will not work.  Is it not configured to work with anything but apple operating systems?

If you purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive, it will only work with select Apple devices. It won't work, for example, on my Late 2011 model that has a SuperDrive built-in, but it will work with an Air, Retina model, new 'drive-less' iMacs, etc.
As far as I know, though, you can only hack the drive to work with some other Apple devices, but not with Windows PCs. Which is a shame as other, less expensive DVD/CD devices will work with just about any machine.

    ibodnano:
You will find internal optical drivers from OWC here. You will find external DVD burners from OWC here.
For the external drives, almost any Firewire burner will be supported by your PowerBook. Here are a few. You can further refine the filters.

  • Do I need an Apple Superdrive to burn DvDs on my Macbook Air?

I have tried numerous Internet applications and none of them have worked. I have an ASUS export drive but whenever I try to burn, it just burns the data and not the actual movie.

To add to the post above. It is not the drive you are using, any external dvd drive will work on any computer. As above you need a special program to burn movies to a dvd disc so they can be played in a dvd player.
Oh I meant any dvd drive other than a apple superdrive. Apple has restricted those to only work on certain mac computers, the airs models being one of them. But any other brand will work fine on any computer.

  • Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap). Any ideas?

Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap and doesn't provide any kind of professional DVD authoring). Any ideas?

This comes up a lot these days.
Practically speaking, there are really four options for the Mac platform: Toast (<$100),  Adobe Premier Productiom ($1,600 to buy or $50/month to rent),  find a copy of Final Cut Studio from 3rd  party (+/- $1,000 new) or a boxed edition of iLife to get iDVD ($50 - $90 on Amazon new).
The other question everyone has is how many OS versions before iDVD or FCS breaks? No one knows, but Apple has said they're no longer supporting these legacy apps. Of course, no one is mandated to upgrade to a new OS unless they buy a new computer. So if it works on a system, stay with it as long as it makes sense.
    Good luck.
