Need input! getting ready to install 10.4 tiger on Power Mac G4 M8493

I recently tried with no luck to reinstall 9.2 on a Power Mac G4. Then with help from the forum here, I found I had 9.0 and the machine wouldn't see the cd.
Since, I have talked to Apple support, they had no 9.2 versions in stock, but did come up with a fix, install 10.4 tiger. Only catch was they had it only on DVD. My machine (had) only a CD-RW. I then got a brain ****. I took a DVD +/- RW from another machine and installed it in this one. Now as soon as I get the DVD's from apple I'll be ready. OR will I? Does this all make since? and has any one had issue's with this type of install?
I'd appreciate some input, all your suggestions are welcome.
Thank you; Martin

Power Mac G4 Quicksilver (733, dual 800, 867 Mhz) , According to the support group at apple the tiger 10.4 will work, and as far as bootin into a system, it doesn't. it is trying to see X but just freezes at start.
I tried everything holding the (shift key) down to go into safe, the x key to go into 10, but nothing worked and Apple no longer carries 9.2 for this machine.

  • Dual Boot : Installing Windows XP on a Power Mac G5?

I am trying to figure out if it is possible to install Windows XP on a Power Mac G5? There are several Massive Multiplayer games that are only available for Windows/PC users. I need to have access to OSX also it is what I use for everything else. I saw Boot Camp -but it is only available for Intel Macs. It seems like there should be a way to partition the hard drive and upon startup to be able to select the disk I want to start up on. I did add a 500 GB internal drive that I can use as a second hard drive. [So I have two : one is a 180 and the other is a 500.] If I install Windows on one side of the 500 GB hard drive I am afraid I wouldn't be able to switch back to OSX.? Anyway I love Macs and I am not interested or able to buy a PC and I don't have the money to buy a new mac or Virtual PC software.? Any suggestions would be awesome?

VPC's CPU emulation speed depends on the speed of the Mac CPU being used. That being said, on my G5 Quad @ 2.5GHz, VPC reports a 533 MHz "686" CPU. Video memory is limited to 16 MB.
I have not seen performance to be anywhere near as bad as you've experienced. It's definitely laggy, but any delays are at most a few seconds. I have all the WinXP eye candy disabled to speed up the interface as much as possible.
In any event, the OP won't be able to use it for games as it lacks 3D acceleration (even if it were otherwise fast enough). I had tried to run the original Grand Theft Auto game (2D), but even that was too slow to be playable let alone a modern game. GTA 2 refused to run due to the aformentioned lack of a 3D accelerator card.
MS will no longer be producing VPC now that all Macs are Intel-based. There's really no more market for it now.

  • Still Using Tiger, Was getting Ready to Install Leopard..

    Hello-
I am still using Tiger but was getting ready to purchase Leopard, get the Missing Manual for Leopard and then Snow Leopard came out. So, I am getting a new MacBook Pro and that comes or is already installed with Snow Leopard. I was going to order one of David Pogue Manuals: Snow Leopard: The Missing Manual, or another one when someone changes, I think, from a Windowez-based OS to Snow Leopard OS X.
After thinking about it, I am wondering should I be getting both or for now just the Leopard Missing Manual rather then Snow Leopard: The Missing Manual. Is Snow Leopard like Leopard? Do you think I would be better off knowing or having a reference available for Leopard and trying to use The Leopard Manual initially rather then the snow Leopard. From what I have read, it sounds like Snow Leopard is almost like a major Leopard update, but I could be wrong.
I am not sure. I don't want to be (again) like the lost guy because I skipped a step. Also, there are a lot of manuals out on these topics but David P's is still not out (as far as I know). Would anybody recommend one of the other manuals that are out?
Thanks for your help. For somebody like me learning this stuff is hard. It does not come naturally so I am looking forward to having a good resource like these Missing Manuals available.

Neville- (I hope you can read both sections because I am curious to know if you are familiar wit what I am trying to describe in the second paragraph.)
I am not sure I can accurately explain why I have not done these, but I did do something like this and I had the applecare lady on the phone so I knew she could help me if I messed up. It was something very similar but there were 2 options to repair (choose repair I should say). One said it was very short in length and the other was very long. I do not remember holding down the "C" key but I might have held down the command or some other key. Also I did not get the chance to go any further because I did not pick the short method, I chose the long one and I had to run. The applecare lady was actually not on the phone the whole time she gave me her extension to reach her if I needed to. I thought that was nice.
When I got the MBP about 3 years ago, I was going to do some fixing and I called applecare. They told me (and her is where I am not sure of my facts) that the TechTool should not be used for some reason. They told me to go to the apple support page, get a DVD that allows you to "write" and find the latest DeluxeTechTool (which apparently did not come with my machine because it had not been out yet). Once I copy the Tool from the site to the DVD, I then use that and insert it before I boot up and the rest I forget.
Do you know anything about this? I remember going to the area she said and seeing the ability to download and copy the newer DeluxeTechTool but I did not do it because at Best Buy I could not find anybody who knew the kind of DVD I would need nor what the ones they did have were for.
I do need this info. too because I have never backed up the machine. If I get a new one I want to get into the habit of backing up all the time, but I will have to learn to. If you know of where a good place is on the web that describes what the R, RW, C, CR, etc. mean for the DVDs and CDs. Even at Costco every worker in electronics did not know the answer to that question.
Some I would need to just burn or copy one thing onto either the CD or the DVD like that DeluxeTechTool and some I would want to keep copying or burning multiple times. And then even some I would like to be able to burn songs on them and transfer them to my iTunes and use that same CD or DVD for a movie to be able to do it over and over again. (Unless the quality goes down with each copy and overwrite I do.)
thanks for your help with the "repair procedure" but I could tell there are some things left out that I would not know what to do. I know now because of what I recently did by the "Apple self test" or whatever it was called I did. Questions I would have would be; when you say insert the original software DVD, I would need to know when do I insert and I think I have 2 CDs that came with the machine. Is there one that says "software" and the other says "hard drive?"
When you say C key are you talking about the key with only the "C" on it?
If I repair permissions all the time by using disk utility while the notebook is on, why dos it say it repaired so many (I forge the word it used) but it will then give what it repaired. It will say things like ro-ororro-o should have been ro-ro- . Things like that.
My final question is, somebody told me if I hold down the shift key and restart the computer and keep holding the shift key until the turning wheel stops and it says "Safe Mode." They told me doing this is the same as repairing the permissions by the more complex way. it is interesting because it does create some a long what appears to be either a file name or something like when you start disk utility just by using the utility.app on my dock, once you start that up and get ready to use it there are 2 long (I am not even sure what to call them) but one has Media in it and then the long list of letters and I think numbers and one just has the long list of letters/or numbers. It is here that I never understood which one is my hard drive and which one to select or repair the permissions. The example is terrible because the picture in the Help page shows a list that is about double the length of mine and is very hard to know which list to pick to be repaired. Also when they say pick your hard drive, I have no idea which one is my hard drive. It does not say "hard drive" next to the numeric code but I think one is left aligned and the other is aligned center or something like that. Also, one code I think has "Media" next to the numeric name.
Thanks for listening to this. I doubt it makes much sense but maybe with you seeming like an expert in Macs, you might be able to figure out what I am trying to say.
    Peace

  • "Getting ready to install this application..." then crashes

I recently installed AIR 2.0.4, but at the end of the installation, and during installation of the app I need, I get an error message. Within seconds of initiating the install for the app, I get the message that "Adobe AIR Application Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have Windows XP sp3
    The install log is here:

I had more in the installer log, but I cleared it out and then uninstalled, reinstalled, and then tried to run the app, after which I got that log. I tried installing multiple versions of AIR before, but always uninstalled before installing. This was a stand alone install as well. The log before I cleared it out was this(there might be a lot of repetition since I tried over and over again).
EDIT: I've tried as many possible solutions as I could find through the support FAQ, looking through other threads, and through other sites, but none have worked so far.

  • Need help getting ready for print

    I am running Photoshop CS5 on a Mac 10.8.4.
    I have basic photoshop experience.
My designer has left me in the lurch at a daedline and I need to get some material to the printer ASAP.
    The design is finished.
The printer wants all the text outlined and the images embedded then a "high quality PDF" submitted to print.
Please can someone tell me how to outline text and imbed images. (I know how to savw to PDF).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Select a Text Layer and invoke
    Type > Convert to Shape
to make the text layer a layer with a vector mask.
As for embedding images if you create the pdf in Photoshop I don’t see the relevance of the request.
But the settings you choose for Compression and Output are relevant factors.
Which Color Space does the printer request? (And please don’t say CMYK …)
What is the Color Space and Color Mode of the file you work on?

  • I need to get my photos from my IPad back to my Mac. , to do that. Any suggestions? Thank you

Can anyone tell me how to get ALL my pictures from my iPad to my MAC. My Mac crashed and had to be restored, my IPad was synced up with it and now every time I try to synch it to my computer it wants to erase all my photos from my iPad. I have over 4000 photos so emailing them to myself as suggested by the kid at the Apple store in NY is not going to work. If someone out there can help I would be grateful. I have the latest version of iPhoto and Lion OSX.

Thank you.  I am trying again to backup my catalog to my second hard drive.  When I tried it before it would stop at 64% at which point I figured it was stuck and cancelled it.  The third time I tried it I let it go for a day, and then it gave me an error message.  Unfortunately, I was so frustrated I didn't write down or look up the error message, I just decided to copy in Windows instead - just so I would have a backup for my stuff.  Currently it again seems to be stuck on 64% again.  I will let it go and see if I eventually get an error message and then try to look that up and resolve it.  If successful I will then reconnect with the method you shared with me - thank you!

  • Install MAC OS 10.4 (Tiger) on Power MAC G4

I have a power MAC G4 and I've installed MAC OS 10.1 and it's working properly. I'm trying to install the MAC OS 10.4 (Tiger) but I'm getting during the installation an alert "this software can't be installed on this machine".
Please advise if I need to install Firmware before and if yes, which version and it's link.
    Thanks and regards,
    Charbel

    Hi cljma,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
you cannot directly upgrade from 10.1.x to 10.4.x (direct upgrade is only recommended for 10.2.x and 10.3.x). You have to do an Erase&Install. Also be aware that you cannot use hardware specific disks that shipped with another computer.
And yes, most likely you do need a firmware upgrade (depending on the exact model of G4 you have): Firmware Upgrades
I suggest you get the retail full install version of Tiger, boot from it, reformat the drive and start the installation from scratch. Do not forget to make a complete backup of all your documents and applications!

  • Installed new hard disk to power mac g4

    hi
i have just installed a new hdd to a power mac g4, when i go to install the os 9 9.2.1 it won't see the hard disk if i install a later os like os x it see it.
    any ideas?

    Hello Keiron and Don,
Have just recently had a problem similar enough that relating it might help.
First, I always fit the Seagate ST380013A 80GB ATA-133 HD. I've had excellent experience with about a dozen of them. I've never used the cable select setting...I forget when you're supposed to, but I've used them in ones and twos and threes and never used aught but master and slave. I don't think that'a the problem unless the QS is different from earlier Macs.
Subject Mac is a dual-processor Sawtooth. Never had any trouble, except that I partitioned the HD in three. Installed Tiger. No problem, except that I didn't like it. Installed Panther. No problem. Went to install OS9. Wouldn't install, so I assume I didn't install OS9 drivers. No problem, so I installed a second Panther without all the languages and voice recognition. Worked great. Installed OS 9 on separate drive. Worked great. Installed OEM Geforce 3 video card in order to see Google maps. No problem. Snatched the OEM Geforce 3 for the DA, and installed a (cheap)(flashed?) Geforce 3 from a self-described Mac expert. Problem. No boot. No video. No screen. No nothin'. Reset PRAM on advice of self-described expert. No nothin'. Replaced bogus Geforce 3 with real thing. Mac monitor (19" Radius) lights up, gives me the spinning wheel, and then the 'nada' symbol. Replaced the tripartite OSX drive with a known-good OS9. Flashing question mark. Wonderful. Tried known-good OSX. Spinning wheel and nada. Better yet.
Booted from an OS9 CD. Booted fine. Didn't see any drives. Now I get a little hazy. What I did was look at the startup disk folder and the drive setup folder on the OS9 CD. First nothing. Then three or four drives (one of which was a phantom) all greyed out. Then finally an opportunity to select a startup drive. Selected it. Wouldn't restart. Wouldn't shut down. Pulled the plug. Booted again from the CD. Now I could see the drives in drive setup. Somewhere in here I managed to verify a disk. Restarted. Mac restarted, but from the CD. Pulled the plug. Restarted while pushing the eject button on the DVD/CD player. CD ejected. Restarted - after a while - to the OS 9 drive. Checked the startup drive in the control panel. Nothing selected. Reselected the startup drive. Restarted promptly, or at least as promptly as it ever does. Couldn't select any resolution but 640 x 480 (I think) at 60 hz. Installed known-good OSX Panther drive (both drives on separate busses of an Acard-133 controller card and jumpered master - though I don't think it matters) and selected OSX as startup. Restarted, and has continued to work without problem. I can also select the full spectrum of resolutions for the Geforce 3, but only from OSX.
As I say, this is probably an imperfect recounting. I suspect the resetting of the PRAM made it hard to see the drives. Does the controller card figure, or the Geforce 3? Did the bogus Geforce 3 card leave a legacy? Where did the phantom drive come from? Where did it go?
Point I'm suggesting is that I'd try poking aroung with the OS9 install CD utilities and see if that would help. The extraneous detail is provided in case someone recognises the pattern and can make some sense of it. To provide the latest chapter, the Sawtooth continues to work without problem and as well as it ever did. The maps are awesome.
    HTH ..... Jon

  • How to  install OS X Tiger on new Mac Pro

Does anyone why you can´t install OS X Tiger on the new Mac Pro? I bought it recently and it came with Leopard of course but I really need to run Tiger because of many of my plug-ins for Protools costs a fourtune to upgrade...
Is it possible to do it? Workaround anybody..?

Is the hardware in the mac pro all that different than to the one shipped with Tiger???
I don't know all the differences, but iirc, the Graphics card is a big diff.
I have Tiger discs for a mac mini shipped just before 2008, would that work you think?
Can only guess, but no, I don't think it would, all Tiger disks for IntelMacs are Machine specific.
Sorry, can't help with the links, I've just read about attempts & the difficulties.

  • Getting ready to install 10.6 snow leopard. I am not hi tech!

I have been having hang ups and the pin wheel activity a lot so I decided to up grade to 10.6.
Can I just follow the installation steps?
What will happen to all my installed applications and files?
    Thanks.......Bill

In the long run you may save time by simple erasing your hard drive and then install Snow Leopard. Get an external drive to backup your current system. First make your backup:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Then boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and do the following:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. After formatting is completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.

  • I downloaded OS Mountain Lion 10.8... and when I was getting ready to install I get "This disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors.  This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired.  I have read some of the same comments below.  Why?

I was trying to install OS X Mountain Lion 10.8... and I got an error saying, "This disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors.  This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired.  I saw several other questions below of people having the same or similar problems.  Does this mean that my hard drive is about to crash?  I plan to head to the place I purchased and have it checked out.  I backed up my data a couple of days ago.  Any comments?

Yes, S.M.A.R.T. is a built-in diagnostic on the hard drive, and it is reporting a problem that may cause it to fail.
You can see the same status in Disk Utility, and possibly get more info.  Run Disk Utility and select the DRIVE in the sidebar.  Be sure to select the DRIVE and not the volume indented below it.  At the bottom of the window, there is a field for S.M.A.R.T. Status.  If there is no problem, it should say Verified.
You can also do a Get Info on the drive (File -> Get Info) in Disk Utility, and the Info window provides more detailed information (toward the bottom) about what is being checked.

  • Getting Ready to Install Leopard

Tomorrow (Thursday) I am going to install Leopard on my iMac C2D. I've been reading about possible problems that might be created from doing this. I plan on doing an Archive and Install installation. Before installing, I plan to back up a few of my important documents to a thumb drive, everything else on my computer is not important and won't be missed if it gets erased. I've read about Password problems after upgrading to Leopard. Should I be very concerned about this? What can I do to avoid this problem along with other problems that might arise? I want to have as smooth an install as possible.
**I will also unplug all USB stuff except for keyboard and mouse before installation to ensure a more reliable installation.

Despite other posters negative advice, you can install Leopard. However, your plan isn't well thought out. At a minimum, you should have a verified bootable backup/clone of your current installation. Anything else leaves you having to reinstall everything, including preference settings, from scratch.
