Need logical setup advice for new iTunes on external HDD and new laptop

New to Win7, would like to know the best way to re-create from scratch my 5+ year old iTunes library on a new external hard drive without simply copying the previous iTunes folder structure over. I guess that I would like to add all the music, video, movie and iPhone app files to a new library. What is the best method to do this so that iTunes can organize all of the new data from scratch correctly? What about reauthorizing apps and media I purchased through iTunes? anything special to do to reintroduce this data to a new iTunes?
(to clarify - I intend to install the iTunes program on my local C drive in programs on the laptop and all data on the external drive) Thanks...

I know I should have redundant backups and should probably have a second external HD and eventually will.
Yes, that's best.
But for now, if I partition (I'm assuming I should) a new 1 TB external HD, how big should I make the TM partition vs. the SD partition at this point assuming I have under 100 GB on my internal Mac HD? Is this a feasible way of doing things here in the near term.
Your best bet is to make your TM partition 2-3 times the size of the amount of data you anticipate backing-up. Put it first on the drive; that way, later on you can delete the partition below it, expand the TM partition, and make a new, smaller partition for SD (or use the whole drive). See #1, #3, #5 and #6 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for details.
By the way, any recommendations on which peripheral HDs to consider? I was very surprised on a recent visit to my local Apple Store that they have a large stock of WD My Studio drives. I mentioned to an Apple sales person that I had always heard WDs were kind of a no-no among Mac users but she assured me the current crop of them were much improved. Any comment on that??
Most any drive will work with Macs, and Time Machine.
If you're going to put a "bootable clone" on it, be sure it's a bootable drive. Most PPC Macs can boot only from FireWire; most Intels can boot from F/W or USB. But some Western Digitals won't boot a Mac. Their list of which ones should and +should not+ boot: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787. But note the disclaimer that they don't support it +*at all.+*.
In addition, many of them have a built-in sleep mode that cannot be disabled, and sometimes interferes with Time Machine backups: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1376

T2, you don't mention how much system memory that you have installed.  Windows 7 will run best with 3GB of memory.  Also, integrated memory is always lacking in any games.  The 128MB is not allocated at one time.  It is only used as needed.  If you want to play games, you should upgrade your memory and upgrade to a standalone video card.  I don't believe that a driver update will make any difference.

I have a new ipad which needs itunes 10.7 or later to download my music onto it... but my apple laptop is not compatible with this as it is too old... can i use itunes with this ipad and apple laptop?

To use itunes 10.7 you need to have Snow Leopard operating system installed
    These are the system requirements
    System Requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
If you can run Snow Leopard you need to purchase it

  • ITunes 11 freezing while transfering music, and can't eject it, so I need to disconnect the cable, then iTunes works just fine and my iPod Shuffle is in restoring mode. I've been having this issue for weeks, and never had it before with iTunes 10.

iTunes 11 freezes and can't eject my iPod, so I need to disconnect the cable, then iTunes works just fine and my iPod Shuffle is in restoring mode. I've been having this issue for weeks, and never had it before with iTunes 10. Please tell me at least a way to eject it without losing all my data and being forced to format/restore the iPod.    I've got 2GB iPod Shuffle 2nd generation(:D)

As a test, shut down (power off) your computer and disconnect all USB devices including hub (except for standard keyboard and mouse if normally used).  If your computer is a laptop, connect its power adapter (so that it's not running on battery power).  Do this to reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
Start up the computer, run iTunes, and connect the shuffle to a direct USB port on the computer.  Does this problem recur when the shuffle is the only USB device?
If it does (as another test), select the shuffle in iTunes, so that its Settings screen is showing.  Check the box for Enable disk use, and Apply.  Does that make any difference regarding this problem?

  • Looking for new laptop what are the differences between pro and air? Besides size. Does the air preform like the pro?

Looking for new laptop what are the differences between pro and air? Besides size. Does the air preform like the pro?

The NEW macbook Pro and Air are EXTREMELY close in form factor
The newest macbook Pro is essentially a larger macbook Air with Retina display and options for speed in increasing prices up to an independent graphics and quad core processor.
both Air and new Pro now have PCIe SSD and permanent RAM.
The Air is the lightweight portable form factor, fast to boot and shut down, but with longer battery life than any of the macbook pro in 13"
Now the new macbook Pro and macbook Air are extremely close in form factor and nature.
    both have 802ac wifi
both have permanent RAM, no superdrive
both are slim profiles and SSD
The only real differences now are (in the most expensive Pros) faster processors and quadcore processors and top end model autonomous graphics.
....and of course the retina display
both are now "very good for travel"
Other than features the form factor of the Air and Pro are VERY close now,....so now its merely a matter of features and price more than anything.
You need an external HD regardless of what you get for backups etc.   Drop into an Apple store and handle both and make your choice based on features, such as Retina or non-retina, .... both at a distance now look like the same computer.
The Pro weighs more, ....but nowhere near what it used to just a month ago on the older macbook Pros
The NEW macbook Pro is a different creature entirely than the older macbook Pro, .....the new Pro is thicker than the Air, but id frankly call the NEWEST Pro a "macbook Air with Retina display" , or
Maybe a “macbook Air PRO with Retina display”
Instead of Air VS Pro now,.....its really a smooth transition from Air to pro without comparing say, 2 different creatures, now its like contrasting a horse from a race horse.
Either one in 8gig of RAM (preferably)... the 4gig upgrade costs very little,  the I7 you will notice only 15% faster on heavy applications over the I5, and NOTHING on most APPS.....I5 has longer battery life.
As you see below, the non-Retina 13" AIR is 82% of the Macbook with Retina display in resolution
there is no magical number of pixels per inch that automatically equates to Retina quality.

A huge internal SSD isnt a game changer for anything, you need an external HD anyway
what you WONT READ on Apple.com etc. is that the larger SSD  are MUCH FASTER due to SSD density

Unfortunately, no Sanyo phones are iSync compatible so you will not be able to synchronize your Contacts and Calendars with the phone.
Also, you may have problems with the Bluetooth adapter you purchased, as the only one officially supported by Apple for use with Macs is the D-Link DBT-120.
The Official Apple list of iSync compatible devices is here:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/isync/devices.html
It's always a good idea to check this list before purchasing a new phone.
Other phones are supported by third party plugins from here and here. But still no Samsung, Sanyo, LG etc. who all use thier own proprietary syncing protocols rather than the industry standard SyncML. These manufacturers also don't provide Mac software with their phones like the do for Windows users.
I'm afraid you're not going to have much luck if you stick with the Sanyo. I would seriously consider taking it back and swapping it for one of the handsets on the above linked pages. Personally I would recommend a Sony Ericsson model. I've always had excellent Mac compatibility with those.

After connecting your iPhone to the computer did you restore using the iTunes on your computer?

  • Backup iTunes Library External HDD?

I am upgrading to Leopard this week and want to do a complete clean upgrade to Leopard. My iTunes library is over 100GB, and I don't want to have to back it up to DVDs. How can I backup my iTunes library to an external HDD and still retain my precious playlists, ratings, etc...? I wan to also backup my entire library, not just purchased music etc..

The following link will give you the instructions to move iTunes to an EHD. These instructions need to be followed EXACTLY. From what you have posted, it sounds like one of the issues is you moved the whole iTunes folder, instead of just the iT music folder. The 2 metadata files within the main iTunes folder must stay on the main drive of your system as that is their "home", they can't be moved.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
As a suggestion for future posts, it's always much better to start your own topic rather than disrupt someone else's topic with a similar but unrelated issue. It can also get very confusing to try to troubleshoot with several different people on the same thread who have different issues. Thanks!

  • Is it possible / needed to make a system save on an external HDD. In Windows German it is named "Systemabbild"

Is it possible / needed to make a system save on an external HDD?
In Windows German it is named "Systemabbild"
I am a new MacBook user and I am not sure, if the software from internet can damage my system, as like in Windows. Therefore it will be helpful for me, to get the info, how to make a system safe or a recovery disc, when possible.
    Thanks for help

I recommend SuperDuper to make a complete 1:1 clone bootable backup of your hard disk to an external drive.

  • Do I need to setup TMS for SolMan?

    Hi,
I am new to SolMan. I need to setup in order to use Maintenance Optimizer.
Does SolMan need to have TMS configured like other SAP solutions, Dev, QA and Prod? Or there is only one Solman setup and it does everything we need?
    Thank you.

Usually there will be only one Solution manager in the landscape . You mainly use this for central monitoring, Maintenance Optimizer , creating Keys, Service Desk , proj documentation etc and you are not doing any development work in here. So it does not make sense to have Dev, QA and PRD for solution manager. But you can have a sandbox which will help you to test the Support packs before applying directly in production. Maintenance Optimizer can be configured with Solution manager .
    Thanks

  • Best piece of advice for "New to COLOR"...

Sort of like a position statement:
I have been monitoring this forum since it started, having used FT for a bit more than a year now... and having been a dedicated daVinci/telecine colorist for 13 years...and an on-line editor for nearly 20 years before that.
Best piece of advice I can offer to new users of COLOR is:
(Drum Roll) Read the Manual! (Cymbal crash!)
NB: It's good. My compliments to the writer (who is known to the TIG).
So many queries have been posted here that are answered right there in print -- it depresses me to think that maybe Apple are quite right not to include it as a physical article, as so few apparently can afford to peruse it. Even available as a pdf than can be queried on the spot...
Count yourselves extremely fortunate, spoiled, in fact. There was NO MANUAL for Final Touch (to speak of) and less than a handful of people who actually knew what they were doing.
This is a very complex application dedicated to an enormously subtle and exacting task, and the number of ways that it can be used and abused is evidenced by the number of 'bugs' that are being complained about.
Color correction, or grading, is very unlike editing, to voice an opinion, having done both at length. Refer to that "Men Vs. Women" gag panel, where men are represented by an "on/off" switch and women are this ridiculously complicated array of knobs, wheels, dials, meters, multi-position switches, etc. On the other hand, though... I would have no use for "UNDO".... never had it in daVinci-land... don't miss it. But I use it extensively in Final Cut. There you go. Use the active memories, grade bins, room setting bins... There are just TOO MANY shadings of meaning that go into a grade that can be accomodated with DO/UNDO... and besides... BE DELIBERATE!
Happy to join the forum... Where possible I will answer queries with a "page number", and hope that it will be a better learning experience. But I accept that that will only apply to operations, and not colour grading itself. There is no manual for that, although there are books that discuss it. Easier to map human emotions on a quantitative basis. Even Goethe gave up on it.
    Joe

    I would
have no use for "UNDO".... never had it in
    daVinci-land... don't miss it.
I'll use basemem or original mem as my undo on the 2k+. It's a sledge hammer and not nearly as graceful as command-z but it will work.
Regarding the writer of the manual, Alexis van Hurkman has published an excellent text on color enhancement/correction http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Pro-Training-Encyclopedia-Correction/dp/0321432312/r ef=pdbbs_sr1/104-2640225-5516717?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1182436900&sr=8-1
I had the pleasure of meeting him at NAB and getting a personal demo of Color at one of the Apple pods.
    Nice post, Joe, nice post.

  • Can't get pass "Internet connection" on Setup wizard for new Linksys WRT54g router

    Hello everyone.
Well, I just bought (today) a Linksys WRT54G wirelss router and wile going through the Setup portion of the wizard (part of the installation of the EasyLink Advisor application), after I connect all the cables (in proper order) it tries to establish an Internet connection but comes back saying that no Internet connection is present. I tried powering off and umplugging the Verizon Westell modem I have but it still says the same thing.  I even tried to get the set up completed with two other verizon modems I have but just can't get pass checking for Internet connection.
My ISP is Verizon and I use just a regular DSL connection using a Westell VersaLink model 327W.
Is there anything I need to do to get this going?  I mean, the set up CD shows how to hook up the cables and everything so it really is not that hard but right after the "hook up the cable" portion it check for an Internet connection and that's were I get stuck.
    Any help will be appreciated.

Your problem is that the Westel "modem" is actually a "modem-router", and it uses the same 192.168.1.x  address space as the WRT54G.
The ideal solution is to place the Westell into "bridge" mode.  This will convert it to a true modem (all router features are turned off).   I assume you are using PPPoE  (if this is not correct, please let me know).   If so, then you will need to setup the WRT54G to do your PPPoE login, when the Westell is set to bridge mode.  Also note that you must first disconnect the Westell from the WRT54G and from the Internet, before you attempt to place the Westell into bridge mode.
An alternate solution is to leave the Westell as is, disconnect it from the WRT54G, then login to the WRT54G and change the "Local IP address" to 192.168.2.1 , then reconnect your system.  In this case, the Westell will do your PPPoE login, and the WRT54G will be set to "Internet connection type" of "DHCP - automatic".  If all you do is browse the web, do some emails, and basic stuff, this setup will probably work OK.  If you are planning more complicated stuff (Internet gaming with port forwarding, video conferencing, etc.)  then be sure to use the "bridge" mode described above.

  • Need usablility expert advice for an ncurses based pacman frontend

    Hi,
I am working on a frontend for pacman using  ncurses/python/pyalpmm. It is in really early stage of development. So i need advice about usability aspects of the program .
    Screenshot  http://omploader.org/vMXVhaQ
The program will mostly be useful for searching and browsing  ( nothing can beat pacman for installation and updating )
Ideas(some implemented, some not yet )
    1) It has a 3 pane layout like most of the other package managers.(Suggestions for any better layout ? )
    2) Uses vim based keybindings ( j/k = up/down, / = search, tab = switch between panes  i=install, d=remove ?=help )
    3) few more options to show orphans etc
    4) planning to implement a tree based layout showing deps
    5) Also a sort by real size option for installed packages (like Allans script )
    6) pick and choose updates is also something which i have been missing for long time.
The idea is to keep the interface as clean/simple as possible
All ideas and suggestions are welcome
Dont miss your chance to get on the scrolling credits screen

This looks really nice. I am looking forward to it.

This would be fine. The other suggestion with panes on top would work as well. I guess panes on top (i.e. a stacked layout) would save space.
    2) Uses vim based keybindings ( j/k = up/down, / = search, tab = switch between panes  i=install, d=remove ?=help )
Vim is so confusing. Please make a Emacs keybinding as as well And of course an intuitive dummy mode (arrows, space|enter=mark etc)
All ideas and suggestions are welcome
Maybe a feature to sort by type of program. I.e. X programs, cli programs etc. I think Zendo/zpm for Zenwalk/Slackware is really great and something similar to your project, although not in ncurses.
