Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
     Snow Leopard General Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
       2. 1GB of memory
       3. 5GB of available disk space
       4. DVD drive for installation
       5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
           fees may apply.
       6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
           terms apply.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
     Lion System Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
           or Xeon processor
       2. 2GB of memory
       3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
       4. 7GB of available space
       5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
         1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
         2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
         3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
         5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
     Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

I am trying to sync a new iPhone 5.  I updated iTunes as requested and now a message stating I need Mac OS X version 10.6.8 or later.  I can't seem to download that.  Any ideas what I need to do?

If you are currently running Mac OS X 10.6 through 10.6.7, you should be able to update to 10.6.8 through Software Update.
If you are currently running Mac OS X 10.5.x or earlier, you need to buy the upgrade to 10.6 and update it to 10.6.8. Apple still sells 10.6, but only if you call them on the phone, and you can only buy it on a disc. Also, you need to make sure your Mac is new enough to run 10.6.

  • Mac OS X version 10.4.8 for Ipod classic

I just got a spankin' new 80 gb I-pod classic. It's charged, I've set my time, etc...
But when I hooked it up to my computer, it said that the I-pod cannot be used because it needs Mac OS X version 10.4.8 or higher to get going. I tried to download the 10.5.1 AND the 10.4.11 versions but neither can run on my computer.
I really would like to be able to use my new I-pod..
I am about to start pulling out my hair.
    Please help!!!

    Correct.
I tried to download the 10.5.1 AND the 10.4.11 versions but neither can run on my computer.
What do you mean you tried to "download" them? You need to buy and install a new operating system before you can download and install the updates (which is what you've apparently tried to download).

  • I bought the wrong version of Photoshop elements. I bought Windows, I need Mac.

I purchased a download version of Windows Elements. I need MAC. How do I switch it?

Have you got the serial number? That can be used on both Mac and Windows versions.
All you need to do is download the Mac trial version from the Adobe website, install it and enter your serial number.

  • My mac is a version 10.5.8. I just downloaded ios7, and it is telling me I need to download iTunes 11 to connect to my phone, but I don't have a new enough version. What do I do?!

My mac is a version 10.5.8. I just downloaded ios7, and it is telling me I need to download iTunes 11 to connect to my phone, but I don't have a new enough version. What do I do?! I think snow leopard was the last update I purchased.  Is there a way to convert my phone back? I need to be able to update it, but don't have the money for a new computer.. Help!

10.5.8 is Leopard, not Snow Leopard. Leopard ran on both PPC and Intel Macs, but Snow Leopard runs only on Intel Macs. iTunes 11 will run on Snow Leopard, though I'm not sure whether iOS7 requires a higher system (Apple seem to specify only itunes 11 and not an OSX system so you may be OK). However if your Mac is a PPC you cannot proceed; if it's an Intel one you can purchase Snow Leopard in the Online Store (search for Snow Leopard to find it quickly) - it's not expensive. It's not possible to roll your phone back to iOS6.

Actually, you cannot download Snow Leopard. You downloaded a Snow Leopard updater.

  • I need to upgrade from  my present operating version of Mac OS X version 10.6.8 to the Snoe Leopard version which I am unable to find the app for. Is this version still offered as an upgrade?

    Hello,
I need to upgrade from my present operating version Mac OS X , Version 10.6.8 to the Snow Leopard. However, I am unable to locate this app. Is it still available? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    John

Prior to upgrading to Maverick, you must FIRST make sure your iMac meets all of its system requirements.

  • How do I update from MAC OS X 10.6.8 to a later version? The software I'm trying to run indicated I needed MAC OS X 10.7 or later.

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • All i have to do is buy the imovie which is Mac os x version 10.7.4 what does that mean? $15 but it says i need

I need help getting this imovie on a used mac that was just bought for christmas I tried to download it from the website and is it $15 and when i try to download it a message pops up saying i need Mac Os x 10.7.4 version what is this because i downloaded it and then another thing popped up. Please Help!

    Hi
Go up to the top left hand corner (with the black Apple)
In this menu - go down one step to - About this Mac
Now You get a small window saying what Mac OS You are running.
New Macs use Mac OS X.8.? (10.8.n)
And the iMovie program that is for download needs at least Mac OS X.7.4 (10.7.4)
And here You read what Mac processor etc You've got - like this
and as You see - I use Mac X.6.8 - and can not use the latest iMovie until I up-grade the Mac OS.
And to me X.6.8 are very stable - so I wait till I'm forced to up-grade.
    I use iMovie 11 (vers 9.0.4)

Why can't i access Pages on my mac osx Maverics version 10.9.5. Do i need to upgrade to Yosemite? I was using it yesterday just fine.

Go step by step and test.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2.Plug in and  remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
Try this even if you don’t see the red light.
    3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
        Do this twice
    4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

        Choose the method for:

    5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Make sure that no box is checked under “Mute”.
