Need Mac to automatically boot as first partition (HELP)
hi guys, i have windows and mac on a different partition and i use Alt button to select,
How do i automatically make MAC my first partition to boot
any advice would be great!!
I should probs state that i am running on a Imac27" running on the I3 processor and have the latest MAC OS 10.6 or something like that (bought this mac about christmas so not too old!)

Hi,
boot your Mac into OSX.
In OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and set your OSX volume to be the default.
On the next reboot your Mac should automatically boot into OSX.
To get to Windows again you would have to use the Alt/Option-key at startup.

Gray Screen - Mac Won't boot from DVD, Please Help!
Hello all
I have an issue. A big issue in fact. I made a fatal mistake of not reading whether my Mac Pro (1,1 1st Gen, 2006) supported Windows 7 64-bit. So I installed via the Bootcamp installer on a separate internal HD and ever since my Mac Pro will not boot up, it just boots into a gray screen and I get the spinning wheel of death. I can however, boot into Safe Mode.
Throughout the years and many moving of houses has meant I have lost my original install disks, so I purchased a retail copy of Snow Leopard (10.6.3 / MC573Z/A). My thinking here was that something is obviously screwed and perhaps a good ol' fresh installation of OSX would do the trick. My Mac originally came with a version of OSX older than Snow Leopard so I'm not violating the can't-install-using-an-older-version-that-what-your-Mac-came-with rule.
Cutting a long story short nothing I do can get the Mac to boot from the install DVD. I've tried the following:
1. Holding down 'c' at start up
2. Selecting the startup disk to be the DVD from Settings within Safe Mode
3. Holding down alt + option key then selecting the DVD
4. Holding down apple + option + shift + delete (read somewhere this forces the Mac to ignore it's desire to boot from the main partition and boot from next available device)
5. Tried resetting the NVRAM
6. Repaired disk permissions from within Safe Mode
All unnecessary periphals have been removed. I have yet to remove 3rd party RAM admittedly.
Really struggling for ideas now.
Is there any hope for me and my beloved Mac Pro?

Anyway, turns out the chap in the first forum link had the exact same problem as me. He temporarily got around this by removing the following files from the following location whilst in Safe Mode:

Files:
NVDANV40Hal.kext
NVDANV50Hal.kext
NVDAResman.kext
NVSMU.kext
GeForce.kext
GeForce7xxxGLDriver.bundle
GeForceGA.plugin
GeForceGLDriver.bundle

I decided what the heck and moved these files into a new folder on my desktop and deleted the originals.
Sure enough my mac now boots up normally!
So it seems that the graphics card was the issue. I have read about the NVIDA 7300 GT only supporting 32-bit, but my tekkie understanding is not enough to know 32-bit what? I thought OSX was a 64-bit OS? If so, then why had it worked all this time? Only when I mistakenly installed Windons 7 64-bit did all my problems start.
Anyway, looks like I'll need to find a suitable replacement. -
Dual boot Windows 7 partition help
I want to dual boot Windows 7 & arch but I need help with figuring out what partitions to make and where to put them because it seems the automatic partition-er won't do the trick for me.
I have two drives that I want to completely format for a fresh, clean install: a 60GB SSD & a 750GB hard drive. I want the end result to be that the SSD only has Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 installed to it and I will point the 'My Documents', 'My Pictures', etc. to a NTFS partition on the hard disk drive ( I know how to do this folder pointing ). I don't want arch to touch the SSD if possible so I can reformat the SSD separately if I ever just want to reformat Windows. I only want arch to be on the hard disk for that reason. I don't think I care which one handles the OS switching at boot ( should I favor Windows MBR or syslinux? Please give advice. ) And I would assume I make the NTFS partition on the hard disk a primary partition so how do I split up arch for the 3 other primary partitions left since the auto partition from the arch boot CD uses 4?I'm no expert, but the way I would do it would be like this:
1. Create partitions on the HDD for /, /boot, /home and swap, along with one (or more) for your Windows personal files
2. Set the BIOS to boot from the SSD.
3. Install Windows on the SSD.
4. Right-click the "My Documents" folder, select "properties", then the "Location" tab and choose the new location for the folder.
5. Install Arch on the HDD partitions, and allow the boot manager to install itself in the MBR of the SSD.
Then the whole boot process will be on the SSD... If you ever need to get rid of the Linux bootloader, you can overwrite it with a "clean" Windows one using bootrec.exe (see here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392).

Mac Mini just boots to grey screen - help!
My trusted mac mini a1176 (intel 1.66GHz) has always worked fine but now it just has a grey screen when it starts. There is no chime, and if I leave it long enough a picture of a file with a ? in it appears.
The events leading up to this could have an effect, I am not sure. The original hard drive had a mac and a PC division. I took this drive out 6 months ago and fitted a larger one. This larger one had a carbon copy of the mac part of the original drive made on it. I did not put the PC division on it. All worked fine since. Today I wanted to boot up the PC partition on the original drive so I put the old drive in a USB enclosure, plugged it in and then in settings chose to boot from the PC part of this drive. This is the last thing useful the mini did. It just went to grey screen on restart. So then unplugged the external drive, still no boot. Since then I have tried.
Pressing differen buttons on restart
Putting leopard instal disk in drive ( this is he os I am using)
Disassemble mini and put he original disk back in
SMC reset
Take out extra ram
Disconnected every other peripheral.
I use a apple wired keyboard
A dell mouse (I have a Bluetooth apple one)
Any suggested next steps would be warmly appreciated? Would the logic board just go like that? It seams a bit of a coincidence!

I have created a new partition on the Mac HD for Lion as I would like to dual boot. Do I need to install Snow Leopard on that partition before installing Lion? If so, can I use one of my Time Machine backups to do this?

No, you can't partition a Time Capsule's internal HD. Both partitions will back up to the same sparse bundle. keeping the backups for each partition separate.
Time Machine will not take the two OSX partitions as two different computers, but for best results, exclude the Snow Leopard drive from backups on the Lion partition, and exclude the Lion partition from backups on the Snow Leopard partition.
There may be some files on the Lion partition that Time Machine on Snow Leopard won't like, among other things. See #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details. -
After I did Partition on my windows, I lost my mac os on booting option

Then I restart my mac, and try to press option, I still see the mac os option
But after I partition my disk (the bootcamp disk) i seen 3 accessible disk in my computer
Because i dont like it, i try to delete the partition letter,( I did not formated it!)
After that I want to get back to my mac os, but after i restarted my mac, i cant find my mac os in option
I still can see the partition for apple in disk management, but it doesn't show in startup

Sorry if my English is badYou can't partition a Boot Camp partition. Nor can you add a third partition to a disk containing a Boot Camp partition. If this is what you did you have messed up your hard drive configuration. You will have to erase your drive, format your drive, reinstall OSX, then run Boot Camp Assistant to create a new Boot Camp partition, then install Windows.

I forgot to back-up my information (pictures, excel documents) on MAC before installing boot camp and Windows. I am mid-way through the process, at the point where I need to install the drivers. Will i be able to retrieve my documents on MAC and finalizing the Windows 7 installation (for the 1st time) or not?

If you already booted into Windows and are at the point of installing the Boot Camp Drivers your already done installing Windows! Yea! All you need to do is just install the drivers and everything should work normal.
The Windows partition and the Mac partition are seen as two different HD's now as far as the computer knows.
You can use the Boot Camp control panel in Windows to boot into the Mac side and the Startup Disk in System Preferences on the Mac to switch to Windows. If you can't then press and hold down the Option key untill you get the boot screen. -
E-Mac won't boot up - need to open CD tray
My e-Mac will not boot up. I had this problem last week and resolved it over the phone with tech support. Now I know how to resolve it, but I can't get my CD tray open to insert the CD to archive and install.

First open the Apple logo cover with your fingernail or even with some balled up tape to stick on it and gently pull it open. Next looking at the physical CD drive you should see a small emergency eject hole that is normally off center to the left. You can insert a straightened paperclip to carefully unlock the tray and gently pull it open. Add needed CD and gently push the tray into the drive. Boot with the C key-cap depressed and you should be in control.

New to Mac... I have Partitioned my MacBookPro with Dual Boot Partitions running M.Lion and S. Leopard and a seperate media partition.
How do I assign my storage to the MEDIA Partition once I am booted in either OS?
Can I place a folder on my desktop so I can read/write ALL my media to?Why not? Make a folder in your media partition and put an alias folder (shortcut) on the desktop of each partition/ OS. You can right click on the folder in the media partition and click on "make alias".
If you want to direct your iTunes media to point to the media partition, google "move iTunes library to external disk" and follow the steps; the instructions should be the same for a seperate partition as it is for an external drive. -
How can I force mount a dvd that isn't even seen by Disk Utility? I can see it on the Mac when using my Windows 7 partition via Boot Camp, but not in Lion, which is how I would rather be running.
Well if there is a EFI block, then running a program in OS X isn't going to do a lick of good.
After all EFI was designed for Trusted Computing and Digital Rights Management, to act between the OS and hardware, can read drives, contact the Internet and everything.
Windows doesn't use EFI, will have UEFI in Windows 8 though. -
What do I do???? I got it yesterday and now it's not working! Brand new straight from the Apple web store. It never came with any sort of disk and now it's telling me that I have no bootable device and that I need a boot disk.... I need this for school... PLEASE HELP ME!!!
Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer. -

But whenever i do it from manager and restart the machine It takes long to get back the console of the machine.
By the time machine boot's up, its from hard disk.

do you mean BIOS boot settings? if yes, you choose CDROM as first, boot and your systems start from CD disk.

I had multiple copies of the library and i tried to move 1 to trash and now i have broken icon and my mac won't boot up any more can i fix this from home or do I need to go to the genius bar?
Go to the genius bar. You've mucked up your MBP OS and it requires a hands on repair.

If that doesn't work, and if you have no backups at all, you might need to send your hard drive to Drive Savers or a similar service. It will cost a lot of money to get the data back, I'm sorry to say.
