Need More Info on Server 2012 R2 Essentials

I'm currently running Server 2008 R2 Foundation for my wife's (1 person) online business, and have been looking at 2012 R2 Foundation vs Essentials.  The latter sounds like a better fit, since in my absence, my wife has limited IT knowledge/experience, but
I need more information:
1) Can Essentials be run in a WORKGROUP instead of a domain?  I currently have my server that way, and it serves our needs very well.
2) I read in some of the forums that while essentials allows 25 users, only two can be logged in concurrently.  Is that true, or am I missing something?
3) Server 2012 R2 Foundation DOES NOT require CALs for local LAN users, is this also true with 2012 R2 Essentials?  Also, how much are the CALS for RDP users?
Capt. Dinosaur

Hi again, Grey, and thank you for your response.  I do appreciate your detail, and I'll answer them each in turn.
"1) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn281793.aspxMust be the domain controller at the root of the forest and
domain, and must hold all the FSMO roles."
Well I guess if it must it must, although I don't understand why the (first) response above states emphatically that a workgroup can be used.  I prefer a workgroup because I understand it much better than a domain setup, and I don't understand Active
Directory etc.  When I bought my server in 2011 I hired someone to set up the os for me.  I also purchased Mark Minasi's book on 2008 R2, but so much of it was over my head.  Fifty five years in the computer business, and today I feel as though
I've never seen one before (hence the name Capt. Dinosaur).  I am, however, signed up for a course in Managing Windows Server 2012 which starts in January.  I hope that helps get through my aging grey matter.  All these initials and acronyms
are total confusion to me, along with my case of chronic CRS (Can't Remember Squat).
"2) If you say you have 3 different users logged into Foundation with RDP I
am not going to argue.  I know the license only allows for 2
administrative connections. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770759.aspx
The default connection (RDP-Tcp) only allows a maximum of two simultaneous
remote connections."
I currently have two licenses for 2008 R2 Foundation, and Ithe users who log in to those remotely are
NOT administrator accounts.   I don't know if that makes a difference, but I've had both users logged in from Florida and I was logged in (as an administrator) from a local workstation.  I had to test that early on to make sure
that my two users could log in concurrently, and that I could be logged in to manage the system.
"As a rule we do not suggest you use your server as a workstation. ..."
Maybe I misled you with something I said, but I/we do not use the server as a workstation.  Sometimes, though infrequently, I have to log in to the server directly (as Administrator) to do or fix something, but do not stay on it for
normal work.  When we're home my (Dell Precision Mobile) Workstation is connected to my LAN.  I also do software development on that workstation.  I have a development environment on an external eSATA drive attached to my workstation,
and both a beta and a live environment on the server; I use my workstation to operate all three.
"... And I really have no clue what would happen if you
restored your dell box to something else.  It may fail activation.
Guess you need to try that sometime. ..."
I have tried it, albeit to another - but completely different Dell box, which is normally the only brand I use;  that's a holdover from my mainframe/minicomputer days when having a mixed shop was seriously avoided - with a clean bare HDD, and it
worked.  When the restoration was executed, True Image asked only that you provide the drivers for the new computer, and they do the rest.
" ... The advantage to the Essentials client backup is it will backup a whole lot of PC's to the server and use data dedupe to keep the backup database small.  So it would backup your wife's PC at
work and the 3 you have on the road."
I should explain that my wife's office is in our basement at home, in a separate room from my computer room.  My wife has a second business making gourmet wine infused jams, and we built a FDA certified canning kitchen
in the basement, and her workstation is there so that she can work at both businesses.  Her workstation, my server and my workstation are backed up weekly to hard drives in a docking station, and stored in a fire resistant safe.  The
computers we have on the road are my mobile workstation and her laptop.  When my daughter comes along, she also brings her laptop.  Since no company information is stored on any of the workstations, only the server data are mission critical.
"But in any case if what
you have is doing what you want.  You don't seem to want what essentials
offers, Active Directory, Remote Access, or Client backup, so why change?"<o:p></o:p>
I guess I'm something like the man who bought a tuxedo and so now he has to start looking for formal dances to attend.  I should explain that we live in a very rural area - our town has a population of 1,000, 60% of the country is National
Forest, and my home is literally in in it, bordered by it on two sides - and have only a very small technical college here.  I need to learn all about the server OS and how to administer it so that I don't
have to hire someone when something needs to be done, and 2012 R2 is the only course available within 100 miles - up until this year they were only offering 2003, and even that was at a different campus 60 miles away (and over a 2,000' mountain).
Since the course I'll be taking is for '12,  I'm simply looking to upgrade so that what I have is what the course covers.  All my other computers are running Windows 7 (Pro and/or Ultimate)
"More on #1 Active Directory gives you group policy and more  control over file permissions than workgroup.  Say you had a folder shared and it had your bank.xls  You could give your wife permission to see it but not your daughter.
Group Policy is probably not a big deal for one client PC.  The advantage is you can make one setting and it can be applied to hundreds of PC's"
Actually I have remote access now in '08 R2 Foundation, and I'm not sure what Active Directory will buy me, but that could, of course, change when I get into the course.  Not having Group Policies has been a small problem,
on one or two rare occasions, so that could be a game changer for me, but with what I have now, I've been able to set up my political campaign system such that
no one from one campaign can see or access any data for any other campaign.  Also I was able to set up the user accounts so that a remote user logging in
can not see nor execute anything except the campaign system.  Any attempt to do otherwise automatically logs them out.
In summation, you may just have convinced me that using a domain instead of a workgroup, with all it advantages might just be the way for me to go, since hopefully I'll learn all about that when I take that course.  The limitation of only two concurrent
RDS users, however, is still worrying me, and I'm not sure that I'm accurately communicating.  If the
two concurrent RDS user limitation ONLY refers to
Administrator accounts then there's no problem, because any user accounts other than those for my wife and myself,
would not be Administrator accounts.  I can't remember whether 2008 R2 foundation supports
"Power User" accounts, but if so, that would be the highest level any other users would have, and possibly not even that high.

  • Azure backup options for Server 2012 R2 Essentials

    Hello,
I have configured a new on-prem HP server for a very small (5 users) non-profit client. This is a single server environment, and they use Office 365 for email. I have already configured AD Sync between the two with dirsync. I have installed the Azure agent,
and imported the certificate, and I am ready to create a backup set.
This is my first experience with Cloud based server backup - I'm used to products like Backup Exec and tape media. What are my options for backing up this server? Can I only do file/folder backup, as it appears?
What would be best practice in this situation, as I need to back up the systems state as well? And then, how to restore it?
All I can think of would be to use Windows Server backup to create a backup of the server, then back that up - but it's so messy, I must be missing something.
    Thank you in advance!!

    Hi,
You may refer the following link for clear step-by-step procedure on Azure backup:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2014/05/01/configuring-microsoft-azure-online-backup-on-windows-server-2012-r2-essentials.aspx
As of now, you can only backup File & folders(Even entire drive) but you cannot perform System State backups with Azure Backup.
For System State backup, as you mentioned about using WSB and then backing it up to Azure Backup vault may be the only work-around as of now. However, you may vote and provide feedback for this feature in
    here.

  • A few bumps from whs to Server 2012 R2 Essentials

I'm a typical WHS user looking to upgrade (non-business use) for a simple storage area and being able to back up the laptops and PCs in the house.
    Problem not solved:
Perhaps not a Server 2012 r2 Essential problem but my WDTV Live can't access the shared folders. After installing the media server add-on for Server R2 Essentials the WDTV Live is able to see the server via the media server but its messy and cluttered and
also reports no media found within folders.
With WHS I was able to view the shared folders easily. Have not been able to enable the shared folders with the WDTV Live...
Big thanks for any help, Microsoft Server 2012 R2 Essentials seems like overkill for home use but I'm really liking it.

Thank you very much for the reply.
I have installed Serviio and things seem somewhat better, just getting Serviio's preferences setup. Dont' need artists/date/etc. info and I'm setting it in preferences.
Just need a simple media folder structure:
    Video folder/Videofile + Videofile.jpg
    Picture Folder/JPGs
    Music Folder/MP3s
Was hoping share folders would be the simple way to go but WDTV still can't access shared folders from server.
Don't really need transcoding because WDTV handles the x264 and VLC handles it on the family PCs.
So close to finish now, I'll bug in another thread about anywhere access as it's just a bonus and not really needed.
Again, thank you for help, just need to figure out how to un-install the microsoft media server now...

  • Number of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Servers

I am looking at migrating a small real estate agency to Window Server 2012 R2 from Windows Server 2003 x86.  Looking to combine 12 servers ( Essentially PCs running Windows Server 2003) less than 20 users, to 2/3 dual core or quad core servers. I am
looking at Essentials due to cost, but have some questions.
    1) Can you have more than one Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials server in the environment? Since the server install defaults to being a domain controller.
    2) If you can have more than one Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, can you have more than one domain controller?
    2) Can you migrate/upgrade a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials server to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard or Data Center?
    Thanks for you time.
    DJ

I confirm your Suggestion that Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials must be the domain controller at the root of the forest and domain, and must hold all the FSMO roles.
You can have more than one Server(Standard, datacenter) with the Windows Server Essentials Experience role installed in your network.
you can migrate from essentials Edition to Standard as Long you purchase the Standard license but is not possible to purchase th eupgrade license fro essentials to Standard. you need the full license.
    thanks

  • Server 2012 R2 Essentials and Office 365 Directory Synchronization

I'm in the process of Migrating an on premise Exchange 2013 Environment to Office 365. The environment already has Server 2012 R2 Essentials configured and integrated with Office 365 for Lync. I'm trying to determine best way of setting up the Hybrid Exchange
environment and move to Office 365. From what I've read it appears I need to setup the Office 365 Dir Sync tool. But I'm wondering if I need to break the existing Server Essentials Integration or can I just add configure the Dir Sync tool and go forward with
    setting up the Hybrid Environment.
    Vincent Sprague

If you are going down this route I would stop using the Essentials Integration and use the full DirSync which does more than the Essentials Integration.

  • Access Database (.mdb) on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

Hi guys, thanks for your time!
    SCENARIO:
    - Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials
    - Windows 7 Ultimate Clients (3 clients)
    - VB6 application on clients using a MS Database (.mdb) hosted on the server.
    - Clients access the database (.mdb) via a mapped network drive (K:).
    PROBLEM:
    - Microsoft Database (.mdb) on server gets corrupted frequently.
    - Clients don't "flush their changes" back to the database: database was not updated.
    WORKAROUND:
    - Database was moved from the server to one of the Windows 7 clients.
    - Application is running OK.
    CONFIGURATION:
    - Permissions are correct: network and NTFS.
    - No faulty network hardware: switch, cabling, NICs.
    - Computers and Server hardware is new.
    - UPS are used everywhere.
    SOME LINKS:
    SMB 3.0
    - Opportunistic Locking and Read Caching on Microsoft Windows Networks.
    - Windows 7 cannot
open the shared MS Access database if it's opened by another user
    - Initializing the
Microsoft Jet 4.0 Database Engine Driver
    - Moved to
Server 2012 getting Access Database Corruption
    Oplocks
    - Configuring
    opportunistic locking in Windows
    - Understanding
    offline files
    - How to
    enable and disable SMBv1, SMBv2, and SMBv3
    - Is it possible to
monitor and log actual queries against an Access MDB?
Now, server is useless if it is not hosting our database. Any ideas, please? Do I need to diagnose using Wireshark? Or using Sysinternals Process Monitor? I think that is a waste of time.
    Thank you!

    Thanks for your reply.
Software is from a 3rd party provider. It currently supports concurrency. It was deployed on Windows XP. SQL Server would be a nice upgrade, however that is
    not an option.
Something has changed with newer versions of Windows. That is what I am going to study in a lab I prepared with a real server and some clients.
File-sharing databases (Microsoft JET databases) are very old technology even before I was a college student. However, I have been very busy researching this technology.
It was made for multi-user environments. It is highly tied to file sharing services from Windows: SMB protocol.
Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 use different versions of this protocol. I think that is the root of the problem. With old technology, application was running fine.
With new technology, application is troublesome. I will check several things: JET drivers vs. ACE drivers, SMB tweaks, etc.
    UPDATE:
Basically, there are 4 general answers to this issue:
    1) Migrate your Access Database to SQL Server Express (or another RDBMS engine).
    2) @Server: disable SMB 2.0/3.0 protocol stack by powershell command. Network speed decreases.
    3) @Clients: disable client redirector caches by using regedit.
    4) @Server: disable the leasing on the file server.
    5) @Server: tuning Broadcom NIC parameters.

  • Server 2012 R2 - Essentials Experience - - I jacked my CA and certificates all to @#&$%!!

    Windows Server 2012 R2 - Essentials Experience
In trying to put pieces together, I jacked my CA and certificates all to @#&$%!!
Some of the factors involved are:
     Server0 - Hyper-V Host
      Server1 - DC, 2012 R2 Essentials Experience role
      Server2 - Exchange 2013
     Client Machines -
      Windows 7 Pro
XP (Yes, these are my cross to bear... - worth noting their presence, but I'm working them out)
     The functional requirements:
      Anywhere Access for Remote users
       - Remote Desktop for Windows 7 machines
      Outlook Web Access
    The mistake... 'Web Application Proxy'
     -which uninstalled the CA
There is a CA back now, but after days of spinning in cirles in a rare area where I feel nearly completely lost (Certificate services) I am asking for help getting these pieces put back together.
    The current situation:
The network is up with all of the network and business services required to work 'Inside the Office' - so the client is "functional".
The "Essentials Experience" is broken and won't install to the clients, though it does provide the Essentials website, access to server shared files (fairly gracefully, I might add) and, as an administrator user, I can get to the servers via
RWA through the site and there are no certificate problems with that since I have a secured certificate for the domain.
OWA has been moved to a further back burner while I try to get the Essentials Experience functioning t the point where the remote users can get to their workstations through RWA... This is the biggest current hurdle... RWA for the clients.
Trying to install the client to the workstations nets me the "The Server is not available.  Try connecting this computer again,..." message at the point of username and password authentication.
    The clientdeploy.log finishes like this:
     [4976] 141016.153746.2670: ClientSetup: Standard Error:
[4784] 141016.153746.2670: ClientSetup: The exit code of the process (C:\Windows\system32\nslookup.exe) is: 0

The computerconnector.log shows nothing of value.
What I want to accomplish as a 'first step' toward recovery is to get the workstations properly connected so they show up in the Dashboard 'Devices' pane and can be managed and access by the Essentials tools.
Secondarily, I would like to get the client side tools in place and functioning (I expect the latter will be a side effect of the former).
So,... for anyone patient enough to have read this far... uh,... help?

Actually,... I can now confirm the delicacy of which you speak...
After a support incident with Microsoft which spanned a marathon 18+ hours on the phone and remote access by no fewer than 7 Microsoft Engineers, we got to a successful result.
It is a point of utter frustration for me when people put in threads like this then don't bother to come back and report 'how the issue was solved', and sadly, I am about to have done that merely because my span of functional attention and valuable reporting
capability was basically gone before I submitted the ticket and following all that was done in my state was not conceivably possible.
So - all I can do is apologize for not being able to report a valuable resolution and give a few little tidbits.
The net result is this - DO WHAT YOU CAN TO AVOID THE SITUATION IN THE FIRST PLACE.  Once your CA is in place, LEAVE IT THE $%@& ALONE!!!!  I mean... my best current advice.
In all, the CA was uninstalled and reinstalled 4 times after my blunder and significant work was done in ADSIEdit as well as substantial manual manipulation of certificates and CAs that was well outside of my (quite considerable) scope of expertise.
I wish I had more to offer in the world of resolution.
With this said, I will make one more request of viewers and moderators alike:
THIS QUESTION IS OFFICIALLY NOT ANSWERED.  IT WILL NEVER BE ANSWERED.  THE RESOLUTION IS NOT AVAILABLE TO THE MORTAL MAN.
DO NOT MARK IT AS ANSWERED
IF YOU MUST DO SOMETHING, DELETE THE WHOLE THREAD, BUT DO NOT BURDON PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING FOR REAL ANSWERS WITH THE NECESSITY OF READING THROUGH THIS.
DO NOT MARK THIS QUESTION AS ANSWERED
I hope this makes sense for people, and I hope people will appreciate NOT having to read this as though there is some 'resolution' contained within.

  • Configuration failed for Windows Server Update Services on Server 2012 R2 Essentials (Trial Version)

    Hi,
I'm trying to setup the WSUS on the Server 2012 R2 Essentials (Trial Version) but with no luck. Below are the logs generated. Hopefully someone can guide me on this. Thanks.

This also looks like its a RE-installation of WSUS.
Any chance the "WSUS Administration" v-root is already present and did not get deleted after the last uninstallation?

  • Windows 8.1 pro client on a Windows server 2012 R2 Essentials domain, how to change lock when idle?

    Hi,
I need to find out how to do something?
I have Windows 8.1 pro running on my PC and its part of a domain which is Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, it all runs perfectly except for a little niggle where my Win 8.1 PC locks after its not used for a short time.  What I want to find out is
how to change this so it no longer locks when idle?  I know this is a security feature but as its just my home pc it can be very annoying to log in again after walking away from the PC for a few min's.
I've had a look through the default domain policy but there are so many settings that I can't find it, that's even if there is a setting there?
    Anyway can anyone help?
    Thanks

    Hi,
We can try to implement by use High performance power plan or GPO to prevent computer from locking down:
    Refer to the solution here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/0863112d-ee54-4808-9d27-0380d7bf04b0/gpo-to-disable-lock-computer-?forum=winserverGP
Also, you can check if there is any task scheduled for idle:

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials will only recognize 1 USB drive at a time in primordial pool

I have a new install of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. I added 2 identical 2TB Seagate Expansion USB drives. Initially they had a volume on them, so I deleted the volume in order for them to be added to the primordial pool and storage spaces,
etc. They both show up fine in Disk Management, but only 1 of them at a time will show up in the primordial pool. I have tested moving them to different USB ports, trying only 1 disk at a time to ensure that both are good, rebooted, attached them via
a USB hub... but nothing works. In my most recent test I plugged in only one and did a rescan. I see it as Disk 1 in both Disk Management and Primordial pool. Then I added the second drive and did a rescan, it showed up as Disk 2 in Disk Management
and when I did a refresh in storage spaces, I can see that it changed to only see disk 2 in the primordial pool. What can be causing this?

To use USB disks, each disk must be plugged into a differs USB controller. A hub will obviously be on one controller, so that won't work. But many computers have only one or two controllers on the motherboard and then use port multipliers (basically internal
hubs) to support more ports. So you have to know your motherboard and which ports are on which controllers. And again, only one drive per controller.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Trial Key - Did I miss it, too?

I tried both "Windows Server 2012 Essentials" and "Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials".  Here is the link to the page I downloaded the images:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-server-2012-essentials
The following are the respective links to the images I used which were provided by the above webpage:
    http://care.dlservice.microsoft.com/dl/download/1/2/9/129AEC4F-1C6C-44B2-9B61-77935E8AB1F4/WindowsServer2012Essentials-English-Install.iso
    http://care.dlservice.microsoft.com/dl/download/8/F/7/8F7024D2-AB2A-4BE2-8406-1E3AC49C5C1F/9600.16384.WINBLUE_RTM.130821-1623_X64FRE_SERVER_SOLUTION_EN-US-IRM_SSSO_X64FRE_EN-US_DV5.ISO
I tried burning these images to DVD and booting my Intel NUC with resulting disc.  Setup goes fine but it asks me for a product key.  I have not received any mail nor was there any pointers to a product key.  This is why I tried both R1 and R2.
I found a similar post here regarding this issue (in fact I found a couple):
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/windowsserver/en-US/db7fd5b9-f58d-4456-86cf-816ec91ded14/windows-server-2012-trial-key-did-i-miss-it
But the answers were unsatisfactory, so please do not give me the same response.
Just in case the question/directive comes up, I redownloaded and re-burned the images using sector verification.  There are no checksums posted on the site so who knows if something got broken while downloading it, but I find it extremely unlikely that
a few bad sector would cause the intaller to forget its evaluation key rather than borking the whole installer.
Further note that I tried "Windows Server 2012 R2" (standard / non-essentials) and that image correctly had the trial versions baked in.  So, I would bet dollars to donuts the problem lies in the images not in a download / burn failure.
I want to use the new NUC as a central content/backup server for all the home computers which are unfortunately growing at bunny reproduction rates.  Since Windows Home Server was discontinued, I was pointed to Server 2012 R2 as the alternative / upsell.
Let me know if this is the case or if a better-fit product exists.
Also, is the "Essentials" install a simply a licensing matter (e.g., 25 user cap) or is it more fundamentally crippled than the standard version?  I am only a home enthusiast and so not really interested in using the product in a production environment.
I only want some ensurance that if I download "standard", I can put in an "essentials" key at the end of evaluation.  If not, then please point me to a correct "Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials" trial image.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

    Hi Ryan,
    à
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-server-2012-essentials
We can find following description from this TechNet Evaluation Center website. Then please check if you can
    find product key.
In addition, for Windows Server 2012 Essentials, please check if you can use
HHRHF-YMNJW-RPGCC-VV68W-BWMVY. For Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, please check if you can use
    R9N79-23MWD-MBP9B-KHF8Q-C36WX.
If any update, please feel free to let me know.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,

  • How can I upgrade Windows Server 2012 Essentials to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials?

I have just installed Windows Server 2012 Essentials on my Home Network (from the installation DVD).  I have done absolutely no  configuration  Installing Server 2012 was an oversight;  I meant to install Server 2012 R2 Essentials.
I tried to correct by installing R2 from its DVD, hoping it would do an upgrade.  That didn't work.
Is there a simple way to make it possible to install the correct OS?   For example, can I just demote the existing server and remove any roles that were installed, so that the R2 disk will install over top of the existing installation?
Alternatively, is it safe to just reformat the partition and install R2?
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn408635.aspx seems to imply that this is OK.
    David Pike, P.Eng, MCITP

Hi Larry.   Thanks for the reply.  It didn't work, but I don't believe you are wrong.  Rather I think there is something weird in my system.  I'm marking your reply as answer.
Some background:  I'm repurposing an older PC (Compaq SR1614X) as a home server, to manage my home network, use as a gateway to my Azure server, and to help my Server 2012 training (on MVA).  I've been messing with it for nearly two months,
on and off.  From the start, I've had trouble installing the server 2012 software (see previous threads August-27 and August-16
), but when I got to the point that I could install Server 2012 Essentials, I thought I could upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Essentials exactly as you suggest.  That was where you helped me a lot, i.e. you confirmed that my expectations were reasonable.
So when it didn't work, I spent most of yesterday trying various different procedures.   I got tantalizingly close, but still no cigar.
I can install any Windows Client and Server 2012 Essentials, but the R2 Essentials installation never finishes; it goes into an "error 0x000000C4" boot loop.  At first I wondered if it was because I was installing a server over a
server, but you confirmed that's not the issue.  I later verified that I cannot install R2 over Windows 7 either, whereas R1 over Win7 is fine.  I can only surmise one of two problems:
I have a bad installation disk
    There is a hardware issue
I plan to eliminate (1) by creating a new disk from a new download.  I have verified that the latest ISO file and the one I have been using have identical byte counts,
For (2), I had suspected that the problem was that the older system has no UEFI, but since R1 installs OK, I am discounting that.  Today's effort:  to eliminate the DVD drive, I will try booting from a Flash Drive.  To eliminate
the hard drive, I will try installing to a different drive.
I am hoping you can help with one more thing.  When I run setup.exe with the /noreboot option, I have a better chance of success.  The option suppresses the first reboot only, but that one (after "Expanding the setup files") always
fails, so suppressing it gets me almost to the end of the install.  Is there a way to modify setup.exe so the it always runs with the /noreboot option?

    Woodrow

    Hi.
I agree with Milos on this; if you want to install Windows Server 2012 Essentials on a machine which suppose to use Windows 7, I would use it solely for test purposes.
Could you tell us what the computer specifications are???
For anything more serious (and I can see that you want to use this machine for accounting software), I would suggest purchasing a server machine.
However, if you really really want this machine to be Windows Server 2012 Essentials, check this article on technet:

P.S. As Milosh sugested, please do a backup first
