Need Networking Help in the United Arab Emirates

Hi, I am extremely frustrated and looking for some help finding somebody in the United Arab Emirates who can help with implementing a networking project.
I have set up a small business in the United Arab Emirates, actually a division within an existing business. The existing business was not too savvy about IT; they have a few PCs of varying age and specs, and each one running a different version of Windows. There is no LAN, that is to say each PC is an island unto itself.
I came aboard in September '05 and as a loyal Mac user, I procured a number of Macs for my division. We now have 5 iMacs and are running a wireless network via Airport. Files are stored on one of the iMacs using shared folders. However, we are not connected at all to the PCs (which are in an office on a different floor) and this makes it difficult to collaborate on documents with the PC users. My next project is to set up a LAN so that all the document files will be stored centrally on the server and we will also add tape backup, enhance security, impose better anti-virus protection for all especially the PC users, etc.
What I want to do is buy an Xserve and use that as the server for my LAN.
However, in addition to the fact that Apple products are extremely expensive here in the U.A.E., I am finding it impossible -- even after months of trying -- to locate a vendor who has enough knowledge and/or willingness to design, install and maintain a network centered on the Xserve. I am particularly frustrated with the Apple reseller here, who is more than willing to sell me the hardware, but whose networking department seems to have less familiarity with OS X than I do (and I'm just a lawyer, not an IT guy).
I could relate all kinds of stories, but the bottom line is that the Apple reseller keeps bringing me networking guys who act as if they have never heard of OS X and who suggest solutions for various functionalities and then tell me that the solution is not available for the Mac platform (although 5 minutes of Google research by me is usually enough to discover they are wrong).
As a result, I think I am going to have no choice but to buy an HP box and run Windows XP server if I am ever going to get this networking project off the ground.
I am wondering if there is anybody on the forum who can point me in the direction of somebody in Dubai or Abu Dhabi who can help. Although I would prefer to buy Apple, I cannot justify spending thousands of dollars on server equipment if I know now that I will have nobody to support my network. Even if I could learn to be a network administrator, I simply do not have the time to do it.
Thanks,
DXB Law

Hi DXB Law,
I think you may have more luck in finding a person who can help in your locality if you post in the OSX Server Mailing list at http://lists.apple.com/mailman/listinfo/macos-x-server
Or you should post in macintosh Managers mailing list over at http://mac-mgrs.org/
I don't think you want to hear this but... you seem pretty competent on the desktop side. It is not a big jump to install & configure a server, particularly if you do it the Apple way, ie. follow their manuals exactly. Once configured there should be little to do on the day-to-day side unless you have a particularly dynamic environment in terms of staff changes, network changes, etc.
If you want an idea of what is involved with initial configuration take a look at the Getting Started guide at http://www.apple.com/server/documentation/ Appendix B has a step-by-step setup scenario, pretty similar to what you want to do.
If you are not able to find a consultant who can help, I suggest you try it yourself as follows:
- give yourself a flexible timeframe for the project
- take it slow & phase in different services each week (eg. week 1, file services, week 2 mail, etc) to give time for problmes to shake out
- post here when do you have specific issues/problems
- do not set your users (or your) expectations too high (at least initially)
If you decide to go with a PC server you could be opening up a whole other can of nastiness for yourself
Good luck,
b.

FaceTime is, by Government regulation, removed fro iDevices sold in the UAE, and cannot be instaled on these devices in any way. Even outside the country.
You will need to get a non UAE iPad to have Facetime.

    Hello
Does anybody know when will iPad 2 to the United Arab Emirates,
And prices the same as that announced by Apple
    Thank you

Apple has not announced a date for the iPad 2 to be released in the UAE, so no one can tell you when that will be. Nor has Apple released pricing for the UAE.

  • HT4743 Why can't I purchase tv series in the United Arab Emirates :( ? I bought the Apple TV for this :(

WWhy can't I buy tv series in the United Arab Emirates store

Yes, very unfair - the media companies policies are crazy and to me it seems as usual with this kind of thing it's only the genuine customer who is prepared to pay rather than pirate/download who loses out.
In reality though it's very early days with digital video sales/rentals/streaming companies so lets hope in time there will be more equitable global solutions and release dates, but currently too many vested interests to make it simple.
It's not that long ago that only the US had Movie/TVShow purchases and rentals, but more countries can now access the service, hopefully you will be able to in the not to distant future.  Not sure if there might be cultural controls on content availability in certain countries as well which the big companies have little control over.

  • Does an Airport Express v1 from France work in the United Arab Emirates?

I have an Airport Express v1 that I bought in France and worked perfectly while there.  I recently moved to Dubai and am having lots of problems with it: either (1) it assign an IP address of 169 with Subnet Mask of 255 and no Router or DNS info, (2) it assigns an IP address of 94 with subnet mask, router and DNS info, or (3) no IP address is assigned.  In the first case with 169 the internet does not work on the wifi device, in the second case with the 94 address it does... however in all cases the signal is inconsistent so that the 169 could turn into a 94 and suddenly start working, or more likely it drops to a 169 and I lose connectivity.
I've done a factory reset but this did not help.  I'm not using another router - just plugging the express into a wall and connecting it via ethernet cable directly into the wall jack.  The only thing I noticed is that the country selection for the express only has European countries, and I cannot select United Arab Emirates, but not sure if this is causing the problem.  I don't want to spend money on another device if it's not going to fix the problem, but I can't understand what's causing the issue.  I contacted my ISP and they had no clue.
I hope someone on this forum can help!

    Thanks for your interest.
Excuse my ignorance as I'm not sure what you meant by "1 of 5" optimization. Did you mean median of 5 ?
Regarding swapping pointers, yes it is common sense and rather common among programmers to swap pointers instead of swapping large data types, at the small price of indirect access to the actual data through the pointers.
However, there is a rather unobvious and quite terrible side effect of using this trick. After the pointer array is sorted, sequential (sorted) access to the actual data throughout the remaining of the program will suffer heavily because of cache misses.
Memory is being accessed randomly because the pointers still point to the unsorted data causing many many cache misses, which will render the program itself slow, although the sort was fast!!.
Multi-threaded qsort is a good idea in principle and easy to implement obviously because qsort itself is recursive. The thing is Multi-threaded qsort is actually just stealing CPU time from other cores that might be busy running other apps, this might slow
down other apps, which might not be ideal for servers. The thing researchers usually try to do is to do the improvement in the algorithm it self.
I Will try to look at your sorting code, lets see if I can compile it.

  • I am an iphone4 user from United Arab Emirates with home button/MIC not working during call problems..

hi, i am an iphone4 user from the United Arab Emirates. I got my phone as a gift last September and it was not bundled with any carriers and was a factory unlocked piece. Within one month of usage the home button started misfunctioning. It started registering double clicks as single, triple clicks, etc. (the usual complaint of many countless users of iphone from the time of the release.) I then kind of ignored this problem and continued using the phone.
With this problem still continuing, comes another one.
My friend gave me a call yesterday, and we were talking happily for a minute or so and suddenly without any reason my friend failed to hear me. Five minutes was spent trying to make myself heard to him. I tried and i tried and the only solution i could find was tapping the phone gently, but firmly. Then he was able to hear me but then after sometime it was back to the same problem.
The only solution i found was to tap in th sides.(please note that this is also a common problem with many who have call problems but no voice memo problems.) I tried adding and registering my device to my account but when i try to put in my iphone's serial number, they say that the device number is invalid.
Now i want to get a solution to this, but since this was a gift piece i do not have any invoice of any sort. I even checked itunes.com/support and was happy to find i still have warranty till september.
I am confused as to what to do as I was dissappointed to find even a single apple store in the UAE and do not know what do we get in terms of support. Could someone please help me?

that is exactly the problem. I have no idea as in where this phone originates from. It was gifted to my Dad from a personnel who he was supplying for in the company. My dad then gifted it to me on my birthday. I asked my dad about the phone but he also does not know a thing. He also said that the other guy must have taken the invoice with him as he did not give anything to my dad.
I checked it in quite a few places (like SharafDG,eMax,Axiom etc., the local electronics suppliers) to track where this phone was originally purchased from( because these people usually take down the IMEI's of the electronic devices they sell), but they all could not help me.
Now i have no idea what to do and i do not want to spend huge amounts of cash for this matter as i am already in the warranty period. Anyways, thanks for your help in advance, but it would be helpful if you could try to get this solved for me.

  • FaceTime feature is not available on brand new iphone 5 from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE)

We got a brand new iphone 5 from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). We are living in Italy and we are trying to setup the FaceTime on brand new iphone 5 but to no avail. Is there a way to enable the FaceTime features?
Can Apple or the carrier are capable of doing it?

    FaceTime
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3367
"If FaceTime is not available in Settings: Note that FaceTime may not be available on devices purchased or used in certain countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates."
Unfortunately that device does not have FaceTime.
