Need new notebook for law school.

Hey guy's,
I just started my first year of law school. I want to get my first Mac. I'm a bit conflicted about whether I should get a Macbook Air or a Pro.
Portability is essential to me, my iPad just isn't cutting it anymore. A CD-Drive isn't essential to me, I could buy the superdrive if I need it, and the smaller HDD capacity isn't an issue either cause i'm planning on buying an external HDD also. All of these factors point me towards a Macbook Air but what worries me about the Air is that once I buy it I can't upgrade it later on, and this computer has to last me for at the very least the next 4 to 5 years.
Main reason I want a Mac is because, almost everyone in my class has one, they're good looking devices, like I said I love my iPad and my iPhone. Lol! All jokes aside, I mainly want a Mac because my neighbor has had his Macbook Pro for the last 5 years and the only problem he's had with it is he had to buy a new battery for it. Clearly Mac's are built to last, but that's a Pro I don't know how long Air's last. Also even though I said earlier on that the CD-Drive isn't that important to me, the fact that Pro's come with one is nice.
I asked my friends with Mac's which one I should get and it was a waste of time, my friends with Pro's told me to buy a Pro and my friends with Air's told me to get an Air.
I already have 2 PC's at home, I want to be able to use Microsoft Office ( I don't like Pages), I'm waiting till the 15th, hopefully Apple will announce new MB Pro's and that will help me decide. I want a notebook where I can download and save cases from Westlaw ( The Westlaw iPad app doesn't allow it). Also I hope to purchase the Thunderbolt display next year.
I'm sorry this is a little long it's just that I felt like I needed to give you the most information possible so that you guy's and gal's could give your best possible answer. Lastly I'm sorry if there are any grammatical errors or if this all seems a little incoherent, English isn't my first language.
Please answer I don't know what to do!
Cheers!

I own both a Pro and Air..., I wouldnt part with my macbook Air (owned 3 of them) for anything.   Used to repair laptops, and owned well over 100 diff. varities. As a person who generally doesnt like anything,....I love the macbook Air.

Macbook Air:
Only one moving part, ultrafast boot time SSD, the full power of laptop with the weight of an Ipad (close).
Air is the only Mac that has Haswell, 802ac wifi, and incredible 12hr. batt life in 13" I5.
Recommend buying the Air with 8gig Ram.
Pack around a regular laptop around about 20 days, then an Air, .....after that the standard laptops stays at home.
Only one moving part, the fan. No moving HD heads to crash or moving platters.  Runs a LOT cooler than anything else out there (which = durability).  Heater is a killer on a scale of 10X over that of accidents.
Also the AIR has far fewer parts to fail inside than a standard laptop.  Really only a few replacement parts
The Air in general is faster due to the SSD, also if you have a 802ac Router (i.e. Airport Extreme) then the Air over wifi is a LOT faster than ANYTHING out there
If youre going to be dragging a notebook around campus all the time, the Air makes things a lot more lovely.
The FINAL consideration of course is your application USE, and needs regarding same (see specs and video above)

  • Need new notebook for video editing

I've been shopping for a new notebook for my friend. He will be editing 50 p loaded from his Panasonic HC - X920, using Premier Pro.
It must be a notebook, a desktop is not an option. I've narrowed it down to a particular Asus system here in Northern Thailand. Selection/variety is a bit of an issue here.
It will be used primarily for editing short clips ( 6 - 30 seconds ) used as stock footage. On occasion he does a 1 - 5 minute YouTube video.
I'm aware the following system only has a 5400 RPM drive and that is my main concern. Other than that, will the system have sufficient resources for most jobs (short clips)?
Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply Bill. It's what I was hoping for.
Without swapping out the 1 TB hard drive, would you say editing short clips is doable? Would there be noticable jitter when editing short clips or only when attempting to load and edit many clips at once?
Currently on the Dell with an i-5 processor, we're able to handle single clips in Premier Elements no problem. I'm assuming we could do the same with the new system which has considerably more ram and a better graphics card. But of course I don't want to commit my friend to buying a system which can't then handle 50 p clips.
Thanks in advance. I do appreciate the input.

first i was wondering what everyone thinks about macbooks compared to let's say another pc like hp,dell,etc.... i have been told that i'd have to be dumb to get a machine with windows vista on it,so that is why i have turned my focus to a macbook because i have heard they are pretty good and worth it...
I personally like my MacBook better than any other computer I have ever owned. I like being able to use windows when I need to but not being tied to it. My wife bought an HP with Vista and it doesn't seem to bad. Lots of updates at least one a week. Mostly graphic card drivers update.
also is it true that if you upgrade let's say the memory, hard drive, etc it won't be covered in the warranty/apple care plan??
Only two things you can upgrade on a MacBook is the Hard drive and Memory. It will not void the warranty. This is apples word on it. DIY Warranty Info
I would just like to ask for people's opinions please on purchasing one of these i am currently a senior in college and will be using it next year for grad school, need to replace the one i currently have...
Be sure you can live with the graphics. If you do a lot of graphics work you might want to consider the MacBook Pro. I use my MacBook for video editing using Final Cut Express HD and it works well. The MB is also not very good for gaming if you are into that. The integrated chip set doesn't work well with 3D games.
also any other ideas on getting iwork or office, a hard plastic case or a skin, thanks alot for anyone's input it is greatly appreciated.... i am looking to get one once leopard comes out thanks!!
Depending on your school may be a factor in what you choose. I use iWork and it is pretty good. You could also try NeoOffice or Open Office. They are good also. Office is supposed to be coming out with a new Mac version but not sure yet how it will work.
Be sure to ask for the student discount when you purchase the computer and software. It adds up.

  • Mac Book Pro Track Pad Making Mac Unusable. Already been replaced once! (I need to write my law school paper, help me please!!!!)

I got my Mac Book Pro repaired in late July of this year. The repair summary says that they replaced the display claim shell, glossy (item number 620-5153). I believe this was due to a clouding on my screen. However, they also replaced the top case with keyboard (item number 605-2953) and the track pad (605-2712). When I took it in I was having problems with the track pad. It would not respond to touch. Wouldn't follow my figure movements, ect. The guy at the Apple Store took it in the back and opened it up. He said it looked like there may be water damage because there was gooey stuff by the battery, so in that case the warranty would be void. I told him that I was 100% certain that no water ever got on it and that if there is gooey stuff in side my macbook that there must be a battery leaking issue. He said that they would have to send it in and the people at the repair center would determine if it had been water damaged or not.
Well, they sent it in to the repair center in Florida (leaving me with out a computer for a week at summer school) and they made the before mentioned repairs. They never asked me questions or anything so I am assuming that meant they rightfully determined there was no water damage.
Aside from some wireless issues the Mac Book had been working okay until tonight. I was typing a paper and all of a sudden the track pad problem came back tonight. I tired to use the computer with the broken trackpad for about 45 minuets but then gave up because it was impossible to use. I shut off the computer and left it off for a good 3 hours before plugging it back in and turning it on. (I tried turning the computer off and then back on again when the problem first occurred and that did not help). I have noticed recently (like the past week) that sometimes it gets way louder then it used to and the last couple of it will randomly will turn off when it still has battery left. Also, ever since I got my mac book pro back from the repair  center Microsoft Word crashes once every 2ish days, but I am unsure if that is related to the current issue.
As I am typing this the touch pad is getting touchy again :(. And as I type it is randomly switching lines so I think the touch pad is being extra sensitive now, Im not sure. Anyway does anyone have any advice? I am in my first year of law school and I NEED MY COMPUTER. It is not an option not to have one for a few days and if I absolutely have to give it to apple I will be forced to buy a cheap computer from Walmart to use in the mean time (Which I REALLY cannot afford).
I am assuming it is the battery pushing of the trackpad or something. Is this correct? I have an appointment with Apple tomorrow but since it is somewhat functioning right now I am unsure of if I should go or not. The store is 45 minuets away and I need it during class each day. But exams are in a month and I cant have it break during those.
I really do not see why Apple would not have replaced the battery when I first brought it in. I identified it as an issue; I am sure someone who works on these computers all day long could have seen it was an issue too. At least, if my assumption that that is the problem is correct. Would getting a mouse that plugs into the USB fix my problems? Or would Apple be willing to just give me a replacement computer since this is the second time this has happened in 2 months and their 1st repair didn’t help? Would Apple be able to fix it in the store or would they be forced to send it to me? Any idea how to fix this?????? Thanks so much! I truly appreciate any help you might have! I am really stressed about this!

BTW (speaking as a Dad of 3 daughters in Grad school) if you don't already have and use a DropBox account, or some other similar online "cloud" based backup of your school documents, you should start doing so immediately. By keeping all of your important documents in the Dropbox folder on your computer, you have instant access to them from any other computer (or iPad), should you be w/o your computer while in for repairs (or if, God forbid, it is stolen). It's free for 2 GB of online storage, which is more than enough for a few years worth of Word documents, etc. (If you get other people to sign up via your email "invitation", then Dropbox gives you even more free storage space.) Every time you close a document, it is updated on the Dropbox servers (encrypted), if it is in the Dropbox folder (assuming you give it a few seconds to update before turning off your computer). Do a google search of "Cloud based storage comparisons" to compare the amount of free space each of the competing services give you.

  • Need new HDD for Satellite L300-1BD

    Hey,
the HDD in my Toshiba Satellite laptop isn't working anymore.
So I'm going to buy a new one today but which one do i need? Like how many inch? And is it a SATA connection or something?
Could someone please tell me to what i have to look when I buy a new HDD for this laptop

    Hello Vivendi
One thing is strange to me: I presume that your L300 notebook is pretty new one and I don't understand why you want to buy new HDD. Is warranty still valid?
Please check it. If the warranty is still valid contact nearest authorized service provider and I am sure you will get replacement for free.
If you want to buy it I also presume you want to replace it alone. So, remove the old HDD and on the white label you will find all necessary information about HDD.
Anyway, you need 2,5 SATA HDD.

  • Need new motherboard for Equium P300-16T

    Hello there!

i donno where to see the motherboard number or name. where can i also see this?
Please people! I really need help!
    Thanks

    Hello
I can imagine to find new motherboard will be pretty problematic and what you can do is to contact nearest Toshiba authorized service provider and ask for help.
They have access to Toshiba database and can tell you exact part number.
For you is important to get motherboard for PSPC2E model and it will be exact the same.
Problem is that mainboard is very expensive so think twice what the best option for you is: to exchange it or buy new notebook.
Do you want to exchange it alone?

  • Need new disk for 2011 Mac Mini i5 with Radeon 6630M

I need a new disk for 2011 Mac Mini i5 with Radeon 6630M
    Will this fit?
Western Digital 2.5 inch Scorpio Black 750GB 7200rpm SATA 16MB Internal Hard Drive WD7500BPKT
Will I need special screwdrivers or tools?

Wow, I worked on my MacMini after watching the video.
    But BEWARE!
That OWC video misses a crucial step! (I emailed them)
My MacMini had a bit of "invisible" black tape holding the disk connector to the disk, very hard to see. When I pulled off the connector, it came apart !
That bit of tape must be something Apple added, or some manufacturers added, but it really messed me up. I had to send my MacMini off to be repaired, at a cost about $200 including parts and labour.

  • Need new motherboard for Satellite Pro C50-A-1E0

My son's Satellite Pro C50-A-1E0 went completely t*ts up. I think it is a common fault and requires a bios reset or something. Anyway I'm thinking a new motherboard will do the trick.
Any help as to which motherboard to get that is compatible and would this actually help?
    Thanks.

    Hi nessie
It is not easy to find new motherboard and believe me it is pretty expensive so you can buy new notebook.
What you can do is to contact nearest Toshiba service provider at first. Explain the situation and ask if they can help you with this. They are also able to obtain new motherboard for you.

We currently have a 2003 domain licensed "per server" , 500 users
we want to relpace the DC with a 2008 server and the academic edition of the OS
My questions are these:  are there academic licenses?  and what would be the best licensing option (per server or per user) if we will need 368 user accounts and 1 server?

    My TECRA-S11-166 is faulty.
I need a new Notebook with *Express-Card-Slot* and (if its possible) RS232.
What kind of Notebook comes with a Express-Card-Slot ?

    Hi
There are different Toshiba notebooks on the market and Toshiba releases new models in very short intervals.
I would recommend you to visit the Toshiba notebook product page and to compare the available series and models.
The Tecra laptops offer a business professional use and Portege series are very best in mobile computing.
The Satellite series are entertainment machines designed to provide exceptional all-round performance.

I have three Palm TX devices of various ages.  Two of them need new touchscreens (including
the one I bought from Palm last May 2009).
How can I purchase new screens?
How can I get new screens installed?
Why do I have three?  Well, one is for work, one is for travel (minus work information)

but gave it away because it is so inferior to the Palm TX for reading.

Hubrad,  Keep at it; the software is worth it.  The directions have to be followed exactly and are easy to mess up.  We fans have irritated Dimitry with our poor powers of following directions.  What worked for me, was when I found on his site the following directions:
    dmitrygr on August 20 2008 18:50:27 ·
    Registration process
Due to a ridiculous number of people not reading the directions for purchasing, and as a result wasting theirs and our time on resolving these issues, this article was written. Here will be a detailed explanation of the registration procedure, and a list of common mistakes people make. Before emailing us with your registration problems, read this article - chances are you did something wrong, and this article can help you fix it and get your registration code automatically and in a timely manner.
This document is the official description of purchasing methods here. Any emails we receive that make it obvious the user did not follow these directions will be automatically sent here to read this document. This document applies only to purchases made using PayPal. Purchases made using Google Payments are handled by hand and thus take longer to process.
The following is an (overly detailed) scenario for a purchase:
First the user creates a username on this website. If the user already has one, the user logs in. This is needed since purchases should be tied to your username here.
All software for sale on this site is shareware, that is to say it can all be tried for free. This is important as you always should try and see how well the software works for you before purchasing.
The user is expected to have the trial version (of the software to be purchased) installed on the device at time of purchase. This is required since registration keys are generated based on a unique registration ID# (usually a series of letters and numbers) that is generated by the trial version of the software in question.
Then the user goes to the front page of the site and clicks the "Buy" button under the piece of software of interest.
This forwards the user to PayPal payment page to process a secure payment.
At PayPal the user enters the details of the payment, and the payment is done. If the user pays using a credit card, the payment will go through immediately, and the rest of this process can be completed. Payments made from a bank account take up to three business days, so if the user did that, the rest of these directions are to be done three business days later.
After the payment goes through the user will get an email from PayPal confirming it. At this time the user should come back to this site and login if not already logged in.
Now the user must click "Your Software" link on the left side of THIS site's front page to get to the "Your Software" page.
If this is the first time the user's been to the "Your Software" area, the site will request the PayPal username. This is the email address given to PayPal during the previous steps. It is crucial to enter this correctly! Failure to do so will result in software purchases not being automatically credited to the user. If an incorrect value is entered, it can be changed later.
If the purchase went through, the user will now see a table of software that the user owns. The newly-purchases software should be present there too. There will be a button to generate a key. The user should click this.
Now the website will ask the user for the id#. (In case of some software titles, the user might also be asked for name and email.) This id# provided by the trial version of the application being bought. (The user should have had downloaded the trial version from this site before. If this is not the case, the user should download and install the trial version at this time, so that the id# can be obtained from it). The id# should be entered in the field.
If all is correct, the user will be issued a registration key. This key is to be entered into the trial version of the software on the device. This will instantly convert it into a full version of the software. (In case of some software titles, the key is a file to be installed to the device.)
So what to do if something goes wrong? If...
...the software hasn't appeared in the "Your Software" section. It is very very likely that you entered the wrong email address in there. Go to "Your Software" section, and in there edit the email address. If you ever changed your PayPal email address, your old address might be the one you need to enter.
...you paid using some method other than PayPal.This document does not apply to you.
...changed devices and your id# is now different.Email us with details.
...you followed the directions exactly and something is still wrong.Email us.
    Good luck, MaryH
