Need Opinion - Wich Mac for me (Air or Pro)

Hello people,
I have been a Linux user all my life. But I always crave the mac laptops, and now with the new generation of macbooks I think I will make the jump to the apple world
But I have a serious question: Wich macbook is the right one for me?
First of all, I must tell you for what I use a computer?! I'm a programmer, I do a lot of work in C#, C++, java and Web Programming, of course I do all the basic's like email, music listenning and photo, I use the adobe suite, eclipse and GNS3 (this last one conserns me) also the occassionaly game (some Battlefield)
In the meanwhile I have a desktop computer, but I find myself in the need of a laptop replacement for my desktop (to be clear, I will only use the laptop and sell my desktop). I was thinking about the new MacBook AIR (MBA) but it corcerns me that it would be to weak, despite the looks I don't want to spend that much money and end up with a slow machine. So I look into the MBP class, and first of all I must say that I in this class I would always upgrade to the SSD Drive, but I don't want to end up with a lot of weight in my back and spend a lot of money, but I need mobality otherwise I stay with my desktop.
So please Mac World help me make this jump
[sorry for any erros, my english is not perfect]

Hi Rui,
None of us know... we're all users just like you. Besides, even if one of us was in the know, we wouldn't be able to tell you on a public discussion anyway. It's a wait and see game for all of us. However, consider the MBP just got a speed bump in the past couple of months and there's no newer tech to put into the MacBook Air until Ivy Bridge is available it would seem unlikely that a refresh is right around the corner.
One thing you mentioned was Battlefield (I like to game, questions about gaming always peak my interest). If by Battlefield you're referring to the new one, Battlefield 3, you'll need to get into a 15" MBP at an absolutel minimum. The shared GPU in the 13" MBP & 11/13 MBA absolutely will not cut it. I have the previous generation 15" MBP and even that (with 256 MB of VRAM) chokes during repetitive explosions and flash effects.
As far as older versions of the game, it shouldn't be an issue. Just don't go too old with any game to the point where it requires Rosetta, because then you're out of luck.
The 13" MBP is really a great machine as it awards you the smaller footprint, expansion opportunities and the added portability. Having carried around a 13" MBP for over a year and now a 13" MBA for close to 9 months, I do chuckle when I hear about people say how much easier the MBA is to tote. The 17" MBP would probably mandate they have back surgery.
I'm not a coder myself but I'm good friends with one who does it for Apple and I know he gets everything done that he needs to on his 13" MBA (i7 with 4GB of RAM). I've never seen him with a big, beefy machine for his needs.

  • What's the best Mac for running Final Cut Pro X?

Title says it all. What's the best Mac for running Final Cut Pro X? I'm not looking to make a feature length hollywood film. But I'd like to be able to edit video without lag.

Yes. Begin with the fastest processor / graphics card / and as much RAM as you can afford. (As all three will become obsolete over time.)
I started from scratch. I have a 27-inch iMac with a 3.4 G Intel Core i7. (currently the fastest processor for an iMac) I also ordered the best graphics card--AMD Ratheon HD. I ordered 16G of RAM, but recently added more RAM to equal 24G. (OWC makes good after-market RAM for iMACs.)
Last, I ordered a flash drive / SATA hard drive combo.  (250G on flash / ITB on SATA). The OS and all of my applications run off the flash drive. (for fast start up!)
I put all of my media and FCP projects onto the SATA hard drive.
Now, I had the option to order a 2TB SATA. But, I realized I can always buy more external storage as I edit more and more projects. ALSO! FCPX is GREAT when it comes to editing projects on external drives! I can segregate an entire project and its media files onto a removeable drive. I simply launch FCPX, plug in the drive and--poof!--I'm ready to edit. It sees the project and the media right away. When I'm done editing, I can then send this drive to another editor (also using FCPX) or attach it to my MacBook if I want to edit the same project in the field.
This has worked for me. I wish you luck.

  • ICan't ReInstall my computer  please help. need to use Mac for school next week

I use my Mac for School and stuff happened.
    Long story short.
    1) I tried to reset my Mac Book Pro  computer and I did.( by pressing option key and go to disk utility and erase tab and erase)
    2) then I know I was supposed to go to Reinstall OS X Lion and I did but I quit. (took 10 hrs and plus my internet is bad and couldn't DL the other stuff)
    3) I remembered that I had a recovery disk. so I inserted it and I went to the disk utility, dragged the Macintosh HD to the restore tab, destination, and it copied my recovery disk data? to my Machintosh HD and the name of it changed to Mac OS X Base System ( the name of my recovery disk)
    4) and I tried to restart, shut down my computer, it sends me to the same Mac OS Utilities. Again.
    5) so I went to Reinstall Mac OS Lion, agreed, and the download destination usually should be the Macintosh HD ( for me its Mac OS X Base System right now) but it said it is locked (because I'm dumb) and i can't install it now.
    6) i don't know what to do now because this is not my computer that I'm sending this support from. and I can't use my original Mac Book. what should I do?
AND I NEED TO USE THE MAC NEXT WEEK FOR SCHOOL.
more info: MacBook Pro 13 inch Late 2011 ( got it for christmas)
    OS 10.7.5 ( recovery disk is 10.7.2)
had no problems for 2 years.
Why is Internet bad? Japan. thats why.
For those who wonder why I wanted to reset/restore my MacBook Pro or, want to hear the long story:
I play League of Legends, Steam, Osu! on my Mac and it took alot of capacity (or space).
And League of Legends has thisthing called "Item sets" that when you save it, it doesnt save it in the client (or app),  it saves the "item sets" data in your computer (took alot of capacity/space)
Not just that, and I had iPhoto but when i downloaded iLife to my mac, and after that, it said my iPhoto is damaged and it can't open.
And summer ended, my parents said If I fail my 11th grade, they are going to kick me out so I told them I'm going to reset my Mac to factory settings and get a fresh start, well this happened.

hi there! I got it back to work by buying the USB version of Mac OS X Lion 10.7
and since my internet connections are kinda bad, I'm not able to download and update it to 10.7.5.
but anyways I got it back to work.
All I can say is I suggest you to buy the USB version of Mac OS X Lion 10.7 from amazon or apple store.

  • I need a good monitor for the retina macbook pro

What is a good monitor for the retina macbook pro. Im looking for 27 inch that is around the price of the thunderbolt display. The only thing putting me off the thunderbolt display is that i wouldnt be able to watch stuff on my xbox on it due to no hdmi.
Im going to university so it would be useful to be able to watch tv and play games on the monitor too but Im more interested in a monitor that will work great on the rmbp and on photoshop. I need to be able to calibrate it perfectly.

If I am understanding you correctly you should look at the 27 inch Samsung HD LED. Best Buy has it on sale for $340

    Thanks in advance!

Go to the Apple store and buy the camera connection kit. It provides a USB female connection, you supply the cable from the USB to your camera. Or order the kit from the Apple online store.

I have looked everywhere online and can not find the drive files for the VF0250. Can some one help me. I do not have the disc and I have E-mailed Costumers support twice for it. Was wondering if anyone else could be of help. No other drivers work I have tried them.

    Hi,
if you follow this [LINK|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU] you will reach the Drivers Download site. But I must warn you, , momentarly there except for Wireless and the Display no other drivers available. Either they will upload the other one or you will have to search for the remaining drivers in the internet (like LAN, flashmedia, etc..)
But I think they should update the section soon and make the drivers available for us..

  • RoboHelp Packager for Adobe AIR is GM

RoboHelp Packager for Adobe AIR is GM now and you can
download it now for FREE from Adobe site –
    http://www.adobe.com/products/robohelp/robohelp-packager-for-air
Adobe AIR runtime enables applications to deliver both the
benefits of server connectivity and the compelling end user
experience of a desktop application. With a seamless offline-
online experience, end-users of Adobe AIR applications can continue
to work when they are temporarily offline. RoboHelp Packager for
Adobe AIR now enables you to publish in Adobe AIR format. Neither
of the popular help output options - CHM or WebHelp or WebHelp on a
Server provide the array of features as RoboHelp Packager for Adobe
AIR does today. That said, in my opinion, RoboHelp Packager for
Adobe AIR is a beginning, beginning of a new revolution in help
authoring. Here is a list of what you get today
    · Auto Update - Adobe AIR applications that can update
themselves when online connection is available and that can work
perfectly when desktop is offline. For example, Adobe AIR help file
created with RoboHelp Packager for Adobe AIR will prompt the
end-users when an update is available. With a single click, the
    help file will update itself.
    · Get Web 2.0 features - Adobe AIR applications can
store information locally – for example, when you add
comments to Online Help, they are stored locally and can be viewed
after you have closed the application. End users can also comment
on external pages and store the comments as part of help file.
Comments are still available when Online Help has been updated
(provided file names don’t change) or when you are offline.
    · Extensibility - Unlike HTML Help which depends on the
CHM viewer, the functionality of the Adobe AIR is extensible and
customizable. For example, organizations can add branding
information to Adobe AIR help file, including icons for help file,
branding imagery on the top of the help file and so on.
    · Multiple tab – never before end user experience
    - Adobe AIR help file also allows you to open multiple tabs within
the tri-pane enabling multiple help topics and threads to be
    navigated at the same time.
    · Integrated interface to everything your end users need
    - You can also add resource links to your help files –
enabling a single access point for product pages, user forums,
knowledge base, online help and external web pages.
    · Multiple templates to choose from - Organizations get
to chose from several of the templates and can select a particular
skin or theme for each of these templates. With RoboHelp Packager
for Adobe AIR, there are three templates come out of the box -
Multi-Tab Accordion, Unipane and Classic Help.
    · End user preferences - RoboHelp Packager for Adobe AIR
enables the help users to customize their help by selecting their
preferences (something they can’t do for a CHM or for WebHelp
output – which is not hosted on a Server).
    · Cross Platform - Adobe AIR is cross-platform and
cross-browser, supported on Windows, Mac and Linux (currently in
    pre-release).
Needless to say, Adobe AIR has attracted a lot of interest
among the help community and some of the experts believe that
within two years, Adobe AIR will be the preferred help format for
    40% of all help authors.
If you have not tried it, you can download it now from

When you are comparing this to Flash, does this comparison
extend to the requirement for each end user to install the Air
runtime on their PCs before they can access our RoboHelp system?
And that they will also get reminders to update to the latest
    version of Air runtime?

  • Need advice about Mac Pro and Windows networking

I currently have 2 machines at work: One HP Windows PC (high configuration) and a PowerMac G5 2GHz dual. I'm basically close to purchasing a new Mac Pro to replace both machines but need some advice. I do the majority of design work on the Mac. However I need the Windows PC to also do some design work but mainly use it to connect into the windows network at work. Basically I need to be able to access the network drives (which are set up with Novell Netware, with IPX turned off), Novell GroupWise email system and connect to the internet through the LAN. Can I do this with a Mac Pro, with either Bootcamp or Parallels? Is there any sacrifice in terms of performance in using Bootcamp or Parallels? The end result I want is similar to what I am doing at the moment - at the moment I use a PC to network and the Mac to design, side by side with each other. What I want is to do this from one machine, not two. (I also need the PC side of things as I need to use some software that isn't available on the Mac, eg. bespoke databases that run on PC). Is it easy to network under Bootcamp/Parallels? What pitfalls are there that I need to be aware of?

When your running Windows via bootcamp, you are essentially Running windows on a PC architecture. You will have all the same capabilities that you have now.
When you use Parallels to run Windows, you are running Windows as a virtual machine running within the confines of the Mac OS. The advantage is that you can run multiple OS's at the same time, and easily share files and data between them. The disadvantage is that the OS running within Parallels has a slightly performance hit, meaning you are not running as fast as the bootcamp version, but the performance hit is very slight. The only place that Parallels is lacking at the moment is in support of 3D or accelerated graphics. That is Parallels currently cannot make use of a graphics card 3D capabilities or advance GPU options. Parallels has stated their intent is to provide better graphic card support in the near future.
With all this in mind, I don;t see any reason why you cannot use Parallels for your Windows networking needs, and the Mac for your design needs, all at the same time. You will need of course to ensure you have enough RAM to support both OS's if you intend to run them at the same time.

I need the direct download for Adobe Acrobat X Pro because my IMAC does not have a disk drive. I had the link to the downloads that was supplied to me through the Chat option on Adobe to get my Adobe Creative Suite 6, but I lost it. Do I need a USB superdrive for my new Mac Air if I already have an iMac OS X 10.5 which has a DVD slot?

If you have another PC or Mac with a DVD drive, you can use it for your MacBook Air with Remote Disc > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287?viewlocale=en_US
This solution works for some tasks, but not for others, so the best way is to buy an external optical drive for your Mac

  • Need win 98 drivers for AIR-CB21AG card , any hope?

    All,
Take a moment and laugh, but I need to see if I can get a driver for a Toshiba Satellite 2545XCDT with a AIR-CB21AG-A-K9 card.
If anyone has any ideas where I might be able to find such a thing, please let me know. The other option is to install W2k on the box, but I think the CPU is to slow to support the install.
    Any suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks,
    ~r

    Hi Ray,
No worries :) I still have an older (should be retired, but its hard to throw away an old friend) laptop with windows 98 on it as well. You are out of luck with trying to find a driver for the AIR-CB21AG-A-K9 card. As you have discovered there are only drivers for XP and 2000.
    Maybe you could source an old 350 client card (Google $35 - $75 US). There are still drivers available for it (software download);
Cisco Aironet 350 Series Client Adapters
Support of popular operating systems-Windows 95, Windows 98/98SE, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows XP, Mac OS 9.X, MAC OS X, Windows CE, Linux and MS-DOS.
    Hope this helps!

  • Advice needed on Mac Air or Pro?

As my faithful HP laptop of 9 years is now on it’s last legs, after reading so many positive reviews about the Macs, I am considering purchasing one of these.
I would really appreciate some advice on some concerns/reservations I have:
My first dilemma is which is more appropriate, I personally  like the look of the air because it is smaller & I was reading that the SSD is better than what is on the Pro (sorry I am not very technical! ).
    My use:
    Mainly internet browsing
    Itunes
    I don’t do any gaming
    Photo editing (hobby not professional)
Small amount of work in word & excel (minimal)
To give you idea of my current usage I looked on my current PC settings and my usage on my C drive is 99.3gb of a 148gb.  Most my photos I have backed up on an external hard drive, but would like to have them back on my laptop.
    Questions:
Would I be able to use this external hard drive on a Mac? (it’s a Cirago)
Would I be able to open Excel & Word documents on a Mac?
I currently use Opera for my internet which I really like, would I be able to download this on a Mac?
Sorry if some of these questions seem a little dumb, but I am a complete novice & know nothing about the Macs!
Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Either the MacBook Air or Pro would suit your needs. The MBA's greatest assets are its extreme portability and SSD while the MBP's greatest assets are its internal DVD and expandability. I have both (one is mine and one supplied by work) and given a choice of just one I'd  choose the MBA. i seldom need a DVD drive.
OGELTHORPE's advice to go for the 256GB drive (even though it might seem that you don't need it) is spot on. A very large percentage of customers who buy the 64 & 128gb models come back to the store where I work part time within 6-18 months with full drives.
Mac Office 2011 is very similar and will take care of your Office needs - LibreOffice is an open source product (and free) which will open and let you edit your documents. And assuming your drive uses USB (and I'd assume it does) you'll be able to use it with your new Mac. There are two common Windows disk formats - the Mac can read both but can only write to FAT. You may or may not want/need to reformat it.

I want to be able to update info in Numbers by either iPhone, iPad or MacBook Air.  Do I need to purchase Numbers separately for MacBook Air?

  • If I own a desktop iMac and a laptop MacBook Air, do I need to purchase Lion for each of them?

If I own a desktop iMac and a MacBook Air, do I need to purchase Lion for each of them?

No. You can install Lion on all machines under your control. BTW, to avoid wasting bandwidth, time, and electricity, when you first DL Lion, don't install it, quit the installer, and copy the Install Mac OS X Lion.app which is DL'd to /Applications to another location. The stupid, inane installer deletes itself as part of its installation process. Then, copy the saved version to the other machines. Do note that if you move the installer app from /Applications, you can install it, and it won't be deleted.
