Need opinion

I've been working on this 2 minute video presentation on Final Cut Express. Here's my problem: there are several titles and texts along with many graphics and small animations. Also included are several HD video sequences. Final Cut and digital video don't like text, graphics and animations so the only good looking part in my presentation is the video sequences. The rest looks like crap. The text and animations looks very fuzzy. So I just heard about iWork. I thought I could build my presentation in iWork. I could import the video sequences, the graphics and the animations. The presentation is a 2 min. self running looping video so I could export it as a Quicktime. This needs to play on a PC (not ideal, I admit). I need your opinion on this. I am on the right track here? How does iWork handle videos? Will I loose quality? Since I will be running this on PCs, is Quicktime the best export alternative? Or should I go with Powerpoint? Thanks for you input.

Right now you are on the wrong track. Export to PowerPoint sometimes works very well, but often it is so shoddy, that you could as well start from scratch again in PowerPoint. If you intend to show the presentation in PowerPoint, you should always test it in PowerPoint first. And if you have PowerPoint to test it, you may want to create it there instead of in Keynote to save one step.
QuickTime used to be an excellent solution for what you want to do. However, currently there is a bug, so Keynote presentations exported to QT won't play well on a PC. It is possible (but far from certain) that it is solved in the version of Keynote that came out yesterday. For your needs, you should wait until someone can tell for sure if the Keynote 3 solves the problems.
PDF can contain movies and make reasonably good presentations as well, but (as far as I know) not the PDF version that can be produced with iWork.
That said, there are many excellent reasons to buy and use iWork. For your particular needs, however, the current version doesn't work.

  • Design one universe vs two universe....need opinion

    Hi
Data warehouse consist of 2 Fact table F1 and F2 and 8 dimensions(3 common dimension tables and 5 others).
Fact table F1 and F2 in warehouse have three common dimension table.
I need opinion about how to arrange universe for this data warehouse.
Report consist of measure from both fact tables.
What will be right way : -
    1. create two separte universe - one for each fact table.
    2. use single universe and use alias for common dimension.
    3. use single universe ans use context.
    Regards

    Hi,
Creating Two Universes will be worst option I guess because it will be more or same like the option 2 you have mentioned. But creating 2 universes will increase the overhead of maintaining two universes.
From option 2 and option 3 you can select any one for such a requirement. I guess the performance of both will be the same.
The Advantage of option two will be that it will never asks for selecting context at run time, such situation might be possible in option 3.
Also, option 2 will take less time to develop as you may not find any loops.

    Rohit

  • Need opinion on SE38 changing reports developed using report painter

    Hi all,
I need opinion on whether the report produced using report painter and se38.
Can i use se38 to modify a report which was produced by report painter?
    Thanks
    William Yau

    Hi,
You can change it thru SE38, but doesn't serve the purpose,
if it's regenerated dynamically your code will be over-written &
there's lot of overhead in change thru SE38.

  • Need opinion : Tiger Server running on PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphic)?

    Dear Gurus,
I have a spare PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphic) with 2GB RAM, and a spare copy of 10.4 Server. Is it reasonable to install Tiger Server into this PowerMac? The computer will serve as a file server for about 20+ user (mostly documents, no video or gigabyte psd file).
The machine meet Tiger minimum system requirement but I need some real life opinion of whether this is okay, or just a bad idea (system will sluggish, etc, etc.)
    TIA

Server doing File Sharing is an I/O problem, not a compute problem. I have run Server 10.3 on a Beige G3 \[with a SCSI RAID added].
You need fast Hard Drives and a fast (preferably Gigabit Ethernet) connection to the workstations to get "near Hard Drive" performance.

  • Need Opinion - Wich Mac for me (Air or Pro)

    Hello people,
I have been a Linux user all my life. But I always crave the mac laptops, and now with the new generation of macbooks I think I will make the jump to the apple world
But I have a serious question: Wich macbook is the right one for me?
First of all, I must tell you for what I use a computer?! I'm a programmer, I do a lot of work in C#, C++, java and Web Programming, of course I do all the basic's like email, music listenning and photo, I use the adobe suite, eclipse and GNS3 (this last one conserns me) also the occassionaly game (some Battlefield)
In the meanwhile I have a desktop computer, but I find myself in the need of a laptop replacement for my desktop (to be clear, I will only use the laptop and sell my desktop). I was thinking about the new MacBook AIR (MBA) but it corcerns me that it would be to weak, despite the looks I don't want to spend that much money and end up with a slow machine. So I look into the MBP class, and first of all I must say that I in this class I would always upgrade to the SSD Drive, but I don't want to end up with a lot of weight in my back and spend a lot of money, but I need mobality otherwise I stay with my desktop.
So please Mac World help me make this jump
[sorry for any erros, my english is not perfect]

    Hi Rui,
None of us know... we're all users just like you. Besides, even if one of us was in the know, we wouldn't be able to tell you on a public discussion anyway. It's a wait and see game for all of us. However, consider the MBP just got a speed bump in the past couple of months and there's no newer tech to put into the MacBook Air until Ivy Bridge is available it would seem unlikely that a refresh is right around the corner.
One thing you mentioned was Battlefield (I like to game, questions about gaming always peak my interest). If by Battlefield you're referring to the new one, Battlefield 3, you'll need to get into a 15" MBP at an absolutel minimum. The shared GPU in the 13" MBP & 11/13 MBA absolutely will not cut it. I have the previous generation 15" MBP and even that (with 256 MB of VRAM) chokes during repetitive explosions and flash effects.
As far as older versions of the game, it shouldn't be an issue. Just don't go too old with any game to the point where it requires Rosetta, because then you're out of luck.
The 13" MBP is really a great machine as it awards you the smaller footprint, expansion opportunities and the added portability. Having carried around a 13" MBP for over a year and now a 13" MBA for close to 9 months, I do chuckle when I hear about people say how much easier the MBA is to tote. The 17" MBP would probably mandate they have back surgery.
I'm not a coder myself but I'm good friends with one who does it for Apple and I know he gets everything done that he needs to on his 13" MBA (i7 with 4GB of RAM). I've never seen him with a big, beefy machine for his needs.

  • Beginner Question. need opinion on using JMF

i am hoping to use JMF to have a audio/video chat session . it will be like there will be 5 PC's . and 1 PC will be streaming a video, the other 4 PC's will be showing it.
what i want to do is to draw lines or make some mark on the video thats been telecast (from the other 4 PC's), and that change to be shown on all 5 PC's
is this do-able ? and i hope my question was not confusing .

    localpott wrote:
is this do-able ?Yes. JMF has the built-in capability to broadcast a stream to multiple participants simultaniously, and it works a lot like email. You just add a few more recipients to the list before you press send.
As for drawing on the video, that'd be relatively easy to do. You'd just need to develop a layering system, whereby a "bottom" layer renders the video frames, and the upper layer renders / modifies the drawing. You'd just then need to create a video "Effect" class that would grab the upper layer, render it on top of the current video frame, and then it would come out of the Processor with the drawing on it.

  • Need opinion on two books

i'm sorry that this might seem off topic - i couldn't find a c# reference books forum here oddly!
i've decided that my programming skills are limited by only knowing Java and have come to the conclusion that i need to get into .net. C# is obviously the best way of doing this and i've found two books written specifically for Java programmers wanting to learn C#.
    The first is:
"From Java to C#" by Glenn Rowe.
    Published May 04
    672 pages
    ISBN: 0321155726
    The other is:
"C# for Java Programmers" by Harold Cabrera
    Published June 02
    608 pages
    ISBN: 193183654X
Now, they're both roughly round the 35 mark so i can't really afford to buy both. I have heard of the "for Java Programmers" books before, but it seems to be a little out of date although the essentials probably remain the same.
If anyone has either book then i'd love to know what you think

Why limit yourself to only titles that focus on converting from Java to C#. Languages have far more similarities than differences. Core language API's are also remarkably similar in what they offer. You are familiar with Java presumably and have a good foundation to build on. Buy the best, most current C# book on the market. Languages are like tools. Pick the right one. And even if you are not familiar with a given language, the concepts involved should not be foreign to you. (Granted, add a lot of extra time to move from procedural to OO or vice versa).

If you have a chance to listen to them, that's always best. Adam makes some great speakers, and these relatively low-budget speakers for them are popular. However, it's always best to listen to speakers first if you can. Maybe there's a store somewhere near you where you can audition them?

  • Need opinion on Ext. DVD/CD ROM

I would love to have an external DVD burner/player that is DL capable, and works on Macs, obviously, and with the iLife suite. Prefer FW, but USB is fine, if it works. Have any of you had any luck with any brands in particular? Looking to do this on the cheap, under $60. Thanks for the help.

Check out macsales.com. They have an array of products. Here's one complete with drive and case: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/ for $115.00 that meets your needs.

  • Computer Maintenance need opinion

I am currently taking over the IT responsibilites in my department at a Graphic Production company. I know that Mac's are suppose to uphold their own maintenance at night (all of our computers remain on and do not shut down), but I would  like to download an application that will also do routine maintenance such as repairing permissions, cleaning out caches and running disk repair (when needed), almost as a back up of what it already does on it's own. I have looked into Apple Jack and a little into OnyX and Main Menu. I need a recomendation on which to use (I am not the most computer savy person in the world) that would be the easiest and most effective for what I want.
Also if there is a way to run this routine maintenance for several computer from a centralized source (we have/use an Xserver in our department).
    Thanks!

I need a recomendation on which to use

  • Need opinion on type size

    Hi,
Just a quickie here. I come from a web design background, but I'm trying my shot at a print job for a client. I understand type in web and print can't be treated the same so my question is when is small too small in print? I have a label about 200mm x 50mm to design. Most of it will consist of artwork and some small information text. I don't have a lot of vertical room to work with and the artwork will take up much of the space. Should I use 5 point over 7 lead type for the informational text, or is this way too small to read comfortably? This product is for a younger crowd.
I've seen small yogurt containers with small type, but since I'm not a print designer, I can't tell exactly how big are these sizes just from looking. I'm in my 20's, therefore, of course I can read small text comfortably. But how small is too small?

There are a few issues here.
    (1)     The readabilitly of type at a certain point size, especially small sizes, depends primarily on the typeface you select. 5 point Helvetica (a fairly plain sans serif face) is much easier to read than 5 point Bodoni. Italic or oblique styles are much harder to read at smaller point sizes.
    (2)     With text at small sizes, be careful about what color you print. The most legible would be 100% black with no other colors. Once you get involve with any tints or combination of colors, you have to deal with the visual results of halftoning and even more so, registration of inks. If you are reverse printing, i.e. white on a background color, make sure that you use a bold style or else your text may be illegible and the darker the background color, the better.
    (3)     The product may be for a younger crowd, but you should not assume that all young people have perfect vision. I know plenty of younger people wearing bifocal and trifocal lens glasses. And if the information you need to print is critical to proper use of the product, making difficult to read for persons who don't have excellent vision can expose you to legal problems.
This sounds a little crazy, but what I would do is to take your design, printed at the final size, and give it to some older people, especially some obviously wearing glasses, and ask them about readibility of your design. Better yet, produce a few samples with different typefaces and styles and see the reactions.
