Need opinions for A to Z workflow for DVD

Here's what I've got to work with:
HVX-200p
CS4 Master Collection
The final product will be a set of 6 educational DVD's done in an interview format, so we're not talking about a movie or documentary type production.
I've been capturing at 720p60fps which comes into OnLocation at 960x720. I then put this into a PP DVCPRO50 720p60p sequence (has a pixel aspect ratio of HD Anamorphic 1080-1.333). I use lots of 1980x1080 HD clips and sometimes some lower resolution clips for slides, etc., some rendered in AE, and scaled to frame size in the PP timeline. All live footage is shot against a green screen and I use AE to chromakey the background using Dynamic Link. Once the editing is finished, I export with AME MPEG2-DVD, max render quality (basically Jeff Bullune's workflow). Here are the settings:
I put the exported file into Encore, build a disc image and burn it to a disc using ImgBurn.
Thing is, I think the final product looks pretty good. In the end, I just want it to look the best it can.
Jim Simon says that DVD can only hold 30 or 24 fps material, so am I doing overkill? I tried capturing at 720p30p and customizing a sequence to match, but I don't like the way it came out in PP or a test output to mp4--ghosting/trails. Isn't 24fps more of a movie-like quality?
Jeff Bellune says it's easier for PP to deal with 60 fps footage in a 30 fps sequence.
Agree? Disagree? What would you change?
Also, if there's an article or thread on this that I was unable to find, I would be grateful to be referred to it.
Thanks.
Paul

If it's all ending up on DVD, I'd just shoot in standard DV format.  Make things simple on yourself.

  • Need opinions for laptop temperature!

Good day guys! I am really concern about my laptop temperature. Normal temperature is around 50-60 degrees Celsius, while in gaming around 80-85 but it reached 93 degrees already. I am using a cooling pad and my electric fan is directed towards my laptop especially while gaming. Are these temperatures still healthy? I am using real temp, core temp and Toshiba PC Health Monitor to monitor my processor and GPU temperature.
My laptop is Toshiba Satellite L745, Intel Core i5-2430, 1Gb nVidia GT GeForece 525M, 8gb ram, 32-bit Windows 7. I just bought this laptop last December 2011. I need opinions guys! Thanks in advance!

This is the second post in 2 days dealing with overheating Toshiba Laptops while playing a game.  It doesn't look like the Fans are moving enough air to keep the CPU and GPU cool enough during extensive video operations.
90 degrees Celcius is way too hot for processors...It doesn't take long to figure out that the Toshiba design is flawed and is very suspect to overheating. Heat will slowly kill the MotherBoard components.
You probably are NOT suffering from symptom/cause number 1. but double check anyway...the cooling pad may be sucking in MORE dirt/dust than the normal laptop cooling fan and then the dust will collect FASTER at the heatsink cooling fins. You may also be able to increase airflow with solution 2. to solve the overheating problem...
    1. I recommend turning the Laptop Off and unplugging all accessories. Get a good Flash light and look down into the CPU HeatSink Cooling Fins (where the HOT air comes out) You should be able to see inside the area unrestricted. If you see a bunch of Grey Matter, it's more than likely clogged with dust bunny's restricting the airflow.
Get a can of compressed AIR. Get a vacuum cleaner and hose...no attachments. Turn the laptop upside down on a flat surface so that you have access to both the intake fan vents and the exhaust vents. (facing towards you)
I have a technique where I hold the vacuum nozzel direcly flat against the FAN IN-Take vent--with the vacuum on--I use the compressed air in 2 second bursts to clean out each of the narrow heat-sink vanes. (Not the open spaces in the plastic case, but each of the metal cooling fins)
Try to not use too much compressed air as it does have a tiny amount of liquid in it.  You could also wait 30 or so  minutes to let it dry.
It's a quick fix, but the alternative is to completely taking apart (on most Toshiba's) to get access to the heat sink and CPU.
    2. If you don't see any dust or any more dust after blowing it out and it is still overheating...you could try what I did below...
I saw a youtube video where a guy rigged up an external 80mm fan with a shroud and duct tape. He powered the 12VDC fan with a battery, but I used one of those Variable Voltage Adapters...set it 12VDC and connected it with Aligator Clips. It didn't look pretty, but the external fan kept the laptop ICE cold.

  • Need Opinions for website hosting

I have been designing a website for publication soon. I have never before purchased a URL or published to anything other than .mac and AOL Hometown (about 8 years ago). I am currently looking to purchase a private domain to use with iWeb. My question is, with so many companies selling website domains, hosting and storage, how do I know what I need and which company is the best to use?
I only need one email address with the domain name and be able to forward it to my .mac site. Hopefully simple and not too expensive. Thanks for any suggestions anyone can offer!

I just did some research on this for a friend the other day. There are obviously a TON of options in that area, but one that I am going to recommend my friend try is http://www.inmotionhosting.com/
They seemed to have the most features for the money, along with a really high customer rating and almost no down time.
I use http://www.ipower.com/ to host my account and even though it got low customer ratings, I haven't had any major problems so far. They have what you are asking for for $3.95 per month.
    Good luck!

  • Need opinions for ScaleUp or ScaleOut

    Hi all,
i've need some advise for resolve my doubt on RAC, because i have to
sizing RAC environment in my business.
Have been shows me two different solutions of RAC:
    1) Two nodes of Bl680c (until 4 CPU quad Core)
    2) Four nodes of Bl480c (only 2 CPU quad Core)
First solution is correct sure but is more expensive and i would like
to know if his cost is justifiable, more cpu are effective benefit?
So if bl480c server with dual CPU have cost of 6.000$ and bl680c with
4 CPU is 12.500$ (double), in RAC environment it is better 2 nodes of
    bl680c or 3-4 nodes of bl480c ?
    thanks for advices
    Andrew

Scale-Up is the ability of your configuration to sustain the same response time when both the workload and resources increase proportionally.
Scale-up is 'usually' achieved by increasing the amount of hardware resources i.e. CPU and memory.
Scale-out is related to adding hardware resources by adding another node.
Sometimes, depending of app. design, the scale-up option on existing hardware can be more efficient than scale-out.
Simple explanation to this is related to the overheads associated with maintaining RAC cache coherency and DB locks between the nodes/instances which will occupy the available resources and 'take it away' from application.
The mail goal which you would like to achieve (I assume) is that the application can scale. You should understand that correctly configured RAC system will give you higher availability than single-instance on single-hardware configuration, but it is not at the same time guarantee that your application will scale too.
So, if you consider your design from scalability point of view you should consider it in terms of application response times.

  • How do I set up AE for DVD and Web?

    Hi -
I've got a project that must be outputted for 2 viewing environments - a Quicktime that will be uploaded to YouTube and  - a DVD.  If I'm understanding this PAR discussion, I will have to build this project twice!!
I know I need 720x480 for DVD and 480x360 for the Quicktime mov going to Youtube.  If I just burn the 480x360 onto the DVD I get some distortion.
I used square pixels for the Photoshop and AE files for both.
Part of the content is scans of forms - and the text should be sharp enough to read.  On the dvd is was way too blurry.
So let me start with this question - given these two destinations - what specs should I use when setting up my Photoshop and AE documents?
    Thanks in advance -
    jl

To support what the others have said:
"If you’ll be rendering and exporting a composition to more than one media format, always match the pixel dimensions for your composition to the largest pixel dimensions used for your output. Later, you can use output modules in the Render Queue panel to encode and export a separate version of the composition for each format."

What's the bad part? Multiple drives or RAID'ing them?
The bad part that Jim refers to is RAID 0-ing them: If only one of those drives goes bad, all of the data on both or all of the drives in that volume get permanently and irrecoverably lost (unless one wants to spend tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars per disk just for professional data recovery).
On the other hand, the only major disadvantage of multiple smaller drives is that they tend to cost more money overall than one larger drive. What's more, some of the smaller-capacity drives are still of older platter layout designs that are significantly slower in sequential speed than most of the larger-capacity drives (and even those that spin at only 5400 RPM instead of 7200 RPM).

  • How do I create my own favorite template for DVD slideshows? I used to be able to select this from pulldown menu, but cannot now do so. I am directed straight to templates, which take more memory. I have a large slideshow, and need all the space I can get

First, how do I create my own favorite theme template for DVD slideshows? I used to be able to select this from pulldown menu, but cannot now do so. I am directed straight to already existing themes, which take more memory. I have a large slideshow, and need all the space I can get. I just want to use a picture as my DVD cover, and then insert a slideshow. Also, when I try to burn my 8.5gb double sided slideshow, all that burns is the music. It is a large slideshow, a memorial on the life of my now deceased brother. This means a lot to me and to my family, and I am having so much trouble trying to burn it. I have gone into Project View and selected appropriately. The bar shows I have room to burn this DVD, but it does not burn.  I have burned so many DVDs in the past, but this one just will not burn. I am so confused at this point. I will say this is the first 8.5gb I have attempted to create and burn. My specs list a 7.7gb or 4.7gb as operable....but there are no 7.7gb dvds. I had to purchase 8.5gb. Help? What am I doing wrong? I have spent so much time on this, and just cannot figure it out.

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor.  The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow.  It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them.  You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version).  Personal preferences showing here.

  • Workflow for DVD from HD+SD source...

Based on the lengthy so-called "single-field conversion" issues with iM09, I'm looking for some inputs on the best workflow to retain high quality for DVD distribution for mixed media - video shot with HD & SD camcorders..
    Here's what I did:
A> Converted all the SD (720x480) MPEG clips to progressive using QT
B> Imported 480p MPEG clips into iMovie 9
C> Edited 1080i + 480p material in iM and exported using the HD preset. Previous tests I did confirmed no diff between the HD export preset (newly added in the latest update), and the QT custom export for 720p.
D> Imported the 720p file into iDVD and re-rendered to DVD format.
Resulting DVD video was good (not bad, and obviously nowhere near HD quality). Wondering if anybody else has a diff workflow they would like to share that minimizes the rendering steps for HD+SD material to retain good quality?
    Thanks!
P.S. Unfortunately, I sold off my copy of FCE when I upgraded to iM9, otherwise iM9 XML --> FCE --> iDVD might have been an option.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

I dont get why one would need to scale down an HD sequence to an SD Sequence  (in PPRO) first?
That must invoke "processing" for the scale and PAR  and add the complication of letterbox or otherwise.
A Dynamic Link of the HD Sequence to Encore does the scaling automatically (and well) and the image retains 16:9  aspect.
A MPEG2 - DVD export file  also does the scaling automatically and you import that into an Encore Project where no further transcoding is required.
Well try it and let me know how it compares for you, I would be curious what your results are. I have recently had to do a a slew of HDV to WS DVD with timecode window burns. It was taking so long when i was linking the hdv project to encore that i tried nesting the hdv footage in the WS NTSC project and it rendered faster for me so i stuck with it.
I assumed it had something to do with the GPU doing the scaling and with premiere rendering the video in SD rez faster then it can render in HD rez then scale it down for encoding in encore.

  • Need inputs for query

    Hi,
Need inputs for generating the query in the below format:
Workflow_name Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
    Prerequisites
    UpdateETLTables
i have written a query but the output it is generating is in a different way:
    SELECT workflow_name,
    TO_CHAR (TRUNC (start_time, 'mm'), 'Month'),
    COUNT(*)
    FROM rep_wflow_run
    WHERE SUBJECT_AREA='SBAN'
    AND START_TIME > '01-AUG-2011'
    AND START_TIME < '31-DEC-2011'
GROUP BY TRUNC (start_time, 'mm'), workflow_name
    order by workflow_name
the o/p for the above query was:
    Prerequisites     August      491
    Prerequisites     September     465
    Prerequisites     October      479
    Prerequisites     November      479
    Prerequisites     December      475
i want the query that should print the o/p as :
Workflow     Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
    Prerequisites 491 465 479 479 475
    UpdateETLTables 10 200 300 56 14

A couple of thoughts in no particular order.
    1. Read the FAQ and learn how to use { code } tags to post a readable listing
    2. Your version number is (all decimal points)
    3. Provide DDL for the table
    4. Provide INSERT statements with sample data
    5. This is horrifying
START_TIME > '01-AUG-2011' Dates are dates ... not strings. Best case you have an implicit conversion ... worst case a statement that will return invalid results. Either change the data type or do an explicit cast with TO_DATE.

  • BEST Workflow? MPEG-2 Cutting and preparing for DVD...

    Hi all
I am in the process of putting together a showreel. The only way I can get my work on a DVD is to record the DVB-T Stream (its Swiss Television), which Quicktime says is "MPEG2 Muxed, 720 x 540 Pixel" - and it's with 25fps.
Now I'd love to cut those Files in FCP with as high quality as possible and export it for DVD-Studio. If I would not be cutting these files, as I already did last year, there is not much conversion but only demuxing needed to use them in DVD Studio.
But how can I cut those MPEG-2 in FC Studio 2 without much quality degredation?
Whats the best workflow for this?
I read somewhere here in that forum, that I have to convert this into DV, cut it in FCP, and then convert it again to MPEG-2 -- but that sounds like a lot of compression going on...

    Thanks for your reply Shawn.
Im aware of the fact that a recompress is not the best way to go. But I don't have any other chance, since a broadcasted signal is already in MPEG-2 and there is nothing I can do about it, this is my only available source. There is no tape for me.
I was basically just wondering if there is something like a smart Compress..say, it only recompresses where there have been changes, between two I-Frames... and evrything els thats unchanged just get copied. that would be the way to go...

There will not be any updates /deletes on the table.
I have created a partitioned table with same struture and i am inserting the records from my original table to this partitioned table where i will maintain data for 6 months.
After loading the data from original table to archived table i will truncating the original table.
If my original table is partitioned then what about the restoring of the data??? how will restore the data of last month???

  • Need to convert 16X9 to 4:3 letterbox for DVD

    Hello
Can anyone tell me the settings I need to convert 16X9 to 4:3 letterbox for DVD. I am mixing other 4:3 letterbox content. Evertime I make an mpeg with Quicktime conversion it is squeezed. I want it to be letterbox in 4:3
    Thanks in advance.
I am using Final Cut Pro 4.5 and DVD pro 3
    Regards,
    Dana Gonzales

In addition to using the advice above, make sure in Compressor (or other item you use to encode) that you are using the 16:9 encode ratio. If you are using QT conversion (which it sounds like from Final Cut?) also make sure that ratio is checked. Unlike a 4:3 m2v which will be 720 x 480 when you open it in QT, the 16:9 will be 720 x 404
