Need Opinions:  Is Short DOF Better in 3D Rendering?

Photoshop's 3D rendering offers us the ability to create imagery that's virtually perfect.
It even allows us to specify the depth of field, from infinite, to reasonably short.
My question to you is this:  Does shortening the depth of field increase or reduce the visual impact of a rendering?
I offer these examples for you to judge:
I can't quite decide which I like better.  The one that's sharp edge-to-edge seems a bit more like eye candy, but the one with the short DOF seems maybe more realistic.  On the other hand, blurring things always feels a bit like hiding imperfection, when in this case it's hiding perfection.
What do you think?
-Noel

You just need to visit any 3D/ VFX or filmmaking forums/ blogs to get that answered - or not. Some people go out of their way to add shallow DOF, others shun it like the devil. As someone doing technical visualization a lot I'm leaning toward the latter, as obviously retaining detail is important. Wouldn't wanna get bashed by some marketing guy or engineer just because the most important nuts and bolts on a machine disappeear in a blurry mist. Others might think differently about the matter, but DOF in CG is often overused, mostly exaggerated and physically implausible. You just need to watch a few older films or do some basic testing with your own photo camera to realize that the excessive amounts of DOF and Bokeh used in some CG never could happen. On the other hand of course that macro-photo feel has its charme. So in the end, it's mostly matter of artistic expression and preference and what you do the rendering for. It's generally a good idea to stick with your instincts and experience from the real world to sell the illusion, though. In your example only a reasonably long focal length with the camera some distance away would produce an image where the camera itself would not reflect and those lenses have very little DOF, so on some level your second image makes more sense. For your other image a shorter lens would be used, but then you'd have a different FOV and more curvature and some vignetting...

Does anyone know if there's a way to change the questions themselves?  (Frankly, they have to be the most ridiculous security questions I've ever seen.  A good security question should be one that you'll have no problem remembering the answer to, even if you're asked years later.  To answer one from the third batch, I'd have to make something up, which makes it unlikely I'll remember the answer later.  And I certainly don't want to have to write the answers down somewhere.)

What's the bad part? Multiple drives or RAID'ing them?
The bad part that Jim refers to is RAID 0-ing them: If only one of those drives goes bad, all of the data on both or all of the drives in that volume get permanently and irrecoverably lost (unless one wants to spend tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars per disk just for professional data recovery).
On the other hand, the only major disadvantage of multiple smaller drives is that they tend to cost more money overall than one larger drive. What's more, some of the smaller-capacity drives are still of older platter layout designs that are significantly slower in sequential speed than most of the larger-capacity drives (and even those that spin at only 5400 RPM instead of 7200 RPM).

  • Does any body have any opinions on how much better CS6 is than Cs4?

Does any body have any opinions on how much better CS6 is than Cs4?  The reason I ask is I am trying to convince my business partner that CS6 is worth buying

My pattern has been that every other new version made it worth my while. I spent very little time working in CS4, since I went from CS3, to CS4 with an immediate upgrade to CS5. Then from CS5 to CS5.5 with an immediate upgrade to CS6. I have not gone to the cloud, so cannot comment on the features there. I would still evaluate your price for CS6 against the rental expense.
I like Todd Kopriva's page laying out the CS6 new/changes features:
Premiere Pro CS6: what’s new and changed
That page contains other links (e.g. CS5 and CS5.5 changes).
In addition to cc_merchant's points about 64 bit (which were HUGE and for CS6 included Encore going to 64 bit), I found these items from the "new" list as important to me:
    adjustment layers (HUGE)
expanded multi-camera editing, with more multicam angles and improved interface (I hated only having 4 angles, although that usually worked)
improved color features, including integration with SpeedGrade and redesigned Three-Way Color Corrector effect
improved workflows with other applications in Adobe Creative Suite, as well as with Final Cut Pro and Avid software
faster Adobe Media Encoder, redesigned to make authoring for multiple outputs and mobile devices easier (batch processing was added with CS4, but it wasn't until CS6, with other enhancements that I really worked it)
enhanced Adobe Encore for creation of DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, and web DVDs (Bluray chapter playlists finally; I have used the flash output, which has gotten better at each step)

  • Need opinions for laptop temperature!

Good day guys! I am really concern about my laptop temperature. Normal temperature is around 50-60 degrees Celsius, while in gaming around 80-85 but it reached 93 degrees already. I am using a cooling pad and my electric fan is directed towards my laptop especially while gaming. Are these temperatures still healthy? I am using real temp, core temp and Toshiba PC Health Monitor to monitor my processor and GPU temperature.
My laptop is Toshiba Satellite L745, Intel Core i5-2430, 1Gb nVidia GT GeForece 525M, 8gb ram, 32-bit Windows 7. I just bought this laptop last December 2011. I need opinions guys! Thanks in advance!

This is the second post in 2 days dealing with overheating Toshiba Laptops while playing a game.  It doesn't look like the Fans are moving enough air to keep the CPU and GPU cool enough during extensive video operations.
90 degrees Celcius is way too hot for processors...It doesn't take long to figure out that the Toshiba design is flawed and is very suspect to overheating. Heat will slowly kill the MotherBoard components.
You probably are NOT suffering from symptom/cause number 1. but double check anyway...the cooling pad may be sucking in MORE dirt/dust than the normal laptop cooling fan and then the dust will collect FASTER at the heatsink cooling fins. You may also be able to increase airflow with solution 2. to solve the overheating problem...
    1. I recommend turning the Laptop Off and unplugging all accessories. Get a good Flash light and look down into the CPU HeatSink Cooling Fins (where the HOT air comes out) You should be able to see inside the area unrestricted. If you see a bunch of Grey Matter, it's more than likely clogged with dust bunny's restricting the airflow.
Get a can of compressed AIR. Get a vacuum cleaner and hose...no attachments. Turn the laptop upside down on a flat surface so that you have access to both the intake fan vents and the exhaust vents. (facing towards you)
I have a technique where I hold the vacuum nozzel direcly flat against the FAN IN-Take vent--with the vacuum on--I use the compressed air in 2 second bursts to clean out each of the narrow heat-sink vanes. (Not the open spaces in the plastic case, but each of the metal cooling fins)
Try to not use too much compressed air as it does have a tiny amount of liquid in it.  You could also wait 30 or so  minutes to let it dry.
It's a quick fix, but the alternative is to completely taking apart (on most Toshiba's) to get access to the heat sink and CPU.
    2. If you don't see any dust or any more dust after blowing it out and it is still overheating...you could try what I did below...
I saw a youtube video where a guy rigged up an external 80mm fan with a shroud and duct tape. He powered the 12VDC fan with a battery, but I used one of those Variable Voltage Adapters...set it 12VDC and connected it with Aligator Clips. It didn't look pretty, but the external fan kept the laptop ICE cold.
"My comments are my own reality" Consider these in addition to other sources. I only know what I know.

  • I need opinions. I currently on dilemma on buying iPod Touch 4 or Samsung Galaxy Tab. Comparing these two, which one is better? Why? Tq.

Well, I want to buy a new gadget for myself. But I currently don't know which one to choose yet. Both iPod Touch 4 and Samsung Galaxy Tab are great inventions! But i can't afford to buy both of them. So i'm asking all of you, any ideas or opinions on these two gadget? Which one is better and why? What do iPod 4 have that Samsung Tab don't have and vice versa. Thank you so much if you replying this.

I'm having the same issues you are having on my S3.  I was on the phone with tech support (Verizon) last Friday for about an hour.  I had to get a bit nasty with the tech when he attempted to blame Samsung for this (Samsung didn't release that update without Verizon's OK- and have you noticed Verizon has added their logo to the startup now?).
My data usage has gone up, battery draining much faster (and I have an extended battery!) and I had to re-load some of my widgets on the phone (including the My Verizon widget).  The tech had me start the phone in Safe Mode (holding down the power, volume rocker and Home button at the same time until the Samsung logon screen shows then let go of the power button while continuing to hold the other two buttons until the phone logs on completely).
Whatever he did remotely seemed to make the phone act better yet he decided I need the update 'reflashed' to the phone.  First he credited my account $30 to take care of any possible data overages.  He then contacted my local Best Buy store to see if they could 'reflash' (upload the update again) the phone.
I went to Best Buy and had it done the next day.  I think the phone was better before the 'reflash'!  The tech gave me his personal Verizon cell number so I will be calling him back today.
An update for the update is coming yet the release date hasn't been confirmed.  The tech said my account will be monitored for any overages in which I will received credits to cover it.
Good luck, Ginger- and I agree with you: if this doesn't get fixed I will move my business to T-Mobile!

  • Need opinions / insights on retina vs non-retina Macbook Pro

Hi everyone! For weeks now, I have decided that I will be buying the new 13 inch Macbook Pro Retina as a replacement for my very old Acer laptop. I've been a Windows user all my life and this will be the first time that I'll be owning a Mac. So for weeks, I have been researching the pros and cons of the new MBPr versus the non-retina MBR but I have read that there's a huge problem about overheating with the new MBPr, the fans and some also say that the Mail is not working very well and the battery drains easily.
I still want to buy a MBPr because it's the newest from Apple, I love the resolution and I really like that they took the optical drive out. Does anyone of you know if they already solved the problem in overheating and the fan? This laptop is super expensive and I'll go crazy if I buy this and having to deal with these problems.
And also, I know the MBPr is the new laptop of Apple but is it that great compared to the ordinary MBP? The ordinary MBP doesn't have problems in overheating, etc... So... basically I just had doubts if I should buy the Retina or the Non-Retina of the Macbook Pro.
Thank you to anyone who will reply and give their opinions and insights

The 13" lacks a dedicated graphics processor, it's why it's hot, it's basically a dressed up $400 dual core office store computer with a fancy metal case, too small of a screen and a screen res too high that you really can't tell much from a non-retina anyway.
The machine is sealed up, you can't upgrade the memory or switchout the storage for something better.
Many are rather disappointed with the "Pro" label being attached to such a underperforming machine, especially the kids who come here whining they can't play many games on it.
As a power user and occassional gamer, I absolutely abhor anything below a 15" which does have the muscle with it's quad core goodness and dedicated graphics which it more than twice as fast and lasts twice as long as that stock Intel HD junk.
Run three operating systems at once if you need too. See the pics here.
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?
In fact I've got myself one of the last 17" MacBook Pro monsters which I treat with extra loving care as it's a collectors item now.
If your going to treat yourself to a expensive Mac, why short change your experience with a tiny cramped 13" screen that's going to be sitting on your chest half the time?
I want your first time experience on a Mac to be a good one, pony up for the top of the line 15" and AppleCare, use a external keyboard and mouse to keep the wear and tear off of it.
I do advise the non-retina anti-glare high res sold in the online store. That baby you can max the RAM out at 16GB, even put two drives in it if you wish with a Superdrive caddy.
Anti-glares are great for the fact that there is no reflections on the screen, use it nearly anywhere, outside etc. and not have to worry about not seeing the screen. There has been a long thread about the glossy screens bothering people's eyes here.
You can read the whole glossy vs matte screen debate online.
A little hidden secret about using Mac's, if you get one of the lower end models, you always feel like you should have gotten one of the better ones. It's because OS X is the same on all the machines regardless of performance, so it tends to feel crapped out quicker on the lower end models and the truth is, dual cores are a has been, quad cores are the new thing.
Your going to be hooked up to power regardless of what machine you buy to reduce your battery cycles as the more cycles, the less the battery lasts and will either have to be replaced, or the entire machine replaced!
IMO, getting the 13" is like walking into a Porchse dealer and walking off with one of the scratch and dent models.

  • Is short any better than int on cheap mobile phones?

    Hello,
I'm writing an open source 6502 emulator (http://jbit.sourceforge.net/). I've written the CPU code very quickly to focus on the rest of the system. Sooner or later I will refactor the CPU code and in the process I will speed it up a bit.
The point I'm not so sure is this:
    class VM {
      byte[] memory;
      short get(int address) {
        return (short)(memory[address] & 0XFF);
    class CPU {
      VM vm;
      short accumulator;
      void step() {
         accumulator = (short)((accumulator + vm.get(address)) & 0xFF);
}The code is simplified but the relevant information should be here. As a side note; replacing VM.get with direct access to memory is out of the question (the real get is more complex than that).
6502 is a 8bit CPU, The intuitive solution would be to use byte for accumulator/VM.get and that was my first version (before releasing). But some code was a pain to get right (I've found working with signed bytes very inconvenient) and in the test phase I decided to look for a easier solution to quickly get a working CPU. If I was developing for J2SE I would have gone for ints, but since I don't know CLDC very well I looked for other emulators and I found one that used short. It seemed a reasonable compromise; not as convenient as int, but perhaps faster on cheap phones (16bit CPU?). But now that I'm planning a refactoring I'm checking this assumption. Of course, I would rather work with ints than with shorts (let alone bytes).
Has anyone some insight about whether shorts are actually faster than int on most real low-end devices (e.g. CLDC 1.0, 2-3 years old, 50-100 USD/Euros at the time of release)? By how much? Or byte is so much faster to be worth the pain?
Also note that VM.get is part of a public interface (see http://jbit.sourceforge.net/doc/hello.html); I can change it, but I need some solid reasons to do so.
    Thanks,
    Emanuele

    Just to let you know.
I've looked into the generated bytecode and I've reviewed the JVM specification. My impression is that short is pretty much useless, unless you want to save space in fields.
The J2ME VM uses basically the same class format as the J2SE VM and thus has very limited support for shorts (and bytes). Even assuming that a mobile phone is using a 16-bit CPU, I doubt that the JVM implementation would be smart enough to figure out when 16-bit operations could be used.
Of course, if you know any better I would appreciate your comments...

  • Opinions on Lightroom 4 beta - appealing to amateurs

I'm not here to criticize all the hard work the Adobe team has put in to the development of Lighroom 4, but as a full-time photographer who spends countless hours using Lightroom to tone RAW images, and have been doing so since the introduction of Lightroom, I have to say that there are very few things about the latest version that have actually been improved, and some things I feel that have even taken a step backwards. Overall, I feel as if Lightroom 4 is trying to appeal more to amateurs rather than working professionals.
I can't help but notice some sort of obsession within the fundamental adjustment controls of LR4 that insists my photos should resemble the look of HDR or tone-mapping. Those effects are nothing but cheap gimmicks used by some amateurs. It's not artful, and it's not pleasing to the eye. This change is apparent in many of the new basic controls, and even upon importing. I consider myself to be very meticulous when it comes to the processing of photos, and I find it surprisingly difficult to get photos looking as smooth and natural as they could be. Photos aren't necessarily meant to have so much detail within the shadows and highlights, and it can actually become rather distracting.
Some say that by using the new controls in a certain way, it's possible to make photos resemble the process used LR3, but this isn't completely true, and why would I want to have to jump through hoops in order to make a photo look acceptable? I don't want to fight with the controls. The whole point of lightroom is to make one's workflow as easy and efficient as possible.
I am not here to argue with people, but rather to hear from others who express the same concerns over this issue.

A very thoughtful and concise statement. But I also vigorously disagree with your assessment.
Far too often, I see contributors here on the Adobe forums claim what "professionals" want, need or desire. All to often, these are close-minded, singular views that want to shoe-horn a very specific type or genre of what the term "professional" means to them specifically. Understandably there are a great many of us who are indeed "professional" as our photography is integral to our livelihoods ... However, those of us who support our families with photography, do so in a myriad of manners. There is no one true method to achieve that goal. We ALL must be tolerant to the group as a whole and consider the needs of others.
While I do not consider Lr4b a complete or a substantial improvement over Lr3 ... it is far from a "dumbing down" effort to appeal to amateurs. There would be far less sliders available for one, if that were the goal.
On March 6, 2012 I will celebrate my 36th year as a full time professional photographer. Since that date, I would really hate to ponder the number of times when I had to adjust my workflow to make it more efficient, profitable and allow me the freedom to live my life to it's fullest extent.
In all honesty, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (including Lr4b) has been the most influential and the most time saving attribute to my workflow, ever.
Frankly, there is much more I expected from Lr4 than is currently available in the beta. Though I do not consider the improvements offered in PV2012 to be a shortcoming. PV2012 is not perfect, but the images I am able to process with it's improved detail and increased control are far superior than what was capable with prior versions. While I will absolutely defend your right to express otherwise, I can't let it pass without saying that my experiences do not concur with yours.

I am in agreement with Jeff. In my experience, if your images are looking too "HDR" in Lr4b, perhaps you are going further than is necessary using PV2012. Perhaps you need to evaluate any habits, presets, or custom default settings you arranged for prior versions of Lr. Inexperience with a totally new process version need not be equated with errors in the software. Sometimes we have to look at our personal habits and inclinations before we make such judgements.
When I buy a new car, the steering wheel, the gear shifter, the accelerator and brake pedals are in their customary locations ... though, the new vehicle will not exactly respond to my touch to each reaction in quite the same manner that my older, more familiar vehicle did. It quite often takes time to become accustomed to the "new" process. It could be the case you need to take a step back, re-evaluate your desires and perform some more extensive tests with the new software to see if it indeed is falling short.
One area, I first had to address, I very soon discovered that I didn't require nearly the amount of adjustment to Clarity for my images that I did with Lr3 and earlier, I could get by with half as much (or less) in most cases ... the reduced halo attribution is a wonderful improvement ... and that was only one slider in the Basic Panel.
We should also keep in mind that ALL beta software is not optimized for the most efficient processing speed available ... that is why they classify it as a "beta." Generally, optimization is one of the final steps so it only has to be addressed once.

I think I find this portion of your post the most troubling. This is after all, a User to User forum and not a place to post a "petition". I find it quite annoying that you would want to squash or stifle opposing points of view. Because it is my understanding that a forum is for the "discussion" of ideas, not a place to censor ideas or thoughts. Doing so creates doubts, at least in my mind, that your point of view lacks credibility or is unfounded. If you believe in what you want to present, you should have no problem in presenting the facts and or evidence you discovered along the way to support your claims and be willing to take on opposing points of view to prove your assertions.
Again, I support your opportunity to express your views, but I definitely can not support your claims as they have not been evident in my personal experience using Lr4b.

  • Need to know how to better manage revolving users in a group

I have a new Beehive Online group set up for a external partner collaboration. Members of the group are only from Oracle or that external partner. While the BHO group is new, the collaboration has been in place for a long time (since 2007). Initially at Sun Microsystems, and now Oracle.
In my description here... when I say "collaboration" you can translate that to roughly equivalent to "BHO Group"....
The nature of the collaboration is that both companies move people to/from the collaboration, depending on the work in progress. I'm not saying there are changes daily, but there can be changes every month or so. It also happens that people working on the collaboration may be moved from it for many months or longer, and then get moved back to the collaboration at a later time. Ie, the may revolve in and out of the collaboration. Trouble is, when they are moved from the collaboration there is no guarantee that they ever get moved back to it. When a person is not part of the collaboration, their access to collaboration info is taken away.
So my problem is understanding how to manage this better in BHO.
I need to allow a user to be removed from a group, with the possibility (but not certainty) of adding them again.
-- my understanding that delete user would then require SysAd intervention to add them back.
-- I also am not clear on whether deleting the user affects their other group memberships.
I tried to find out more about locking a user
-- but it seems like that affects more then the group.
Whats the recommended way to deal with this?
    Thx!

I tried deleting the "verified" user using the group creation/manage tool.
    - click "View members"
    - select the checkbox next to the user
    - click the button "Delete (non-Verified Users)"
Doing that, the user is not removed AND I get an error message in red at the top of the page that says:
'Only selected non-"Verified" member(s) have been deleted. Go to https://beehiveonline.oracle.com/BOLAdmin.html to delete "Verified" users'
So I went to the Admin tool:
    - selected my group,
    - selected the user from the list
    - clicked the "Delete User" button above the list.
Got the warning pop-up about the user needing to be added back by SysAd, ignored it and clicked "OK".
Got a success pop-up with all kinds of internal response tracking stuff in it. Clicked "OK"
And the user is gone from the group in the Admin tool. HOWEVER, the user still shows up in the group list in the group create/manage tool.
Will the user disappear from that list? If not, the list would be misleading.
    Thx!

  • Hard Drive Disaster - Need opinions on how to get up ASAP

    Hi,
I have a crisis on my hands. I brought a Virtual machine up about a month ago with Windows Server 2012 R2 and then proceeded to install Exchange 2013 on it. Approximately a week ago I migrated all the mailboxes from Exchange 2007
to the new machine. After the migration I set Exchange 2013 up with Exchange Online Protection and Azure Rights management and started syncing our Active Directory.
Now for the bad part: the raid 1 configuration on the server was not syncing the drives and I hadn’t started making backups of the server. The hard drive containing the virtual machine configuration and the virtual hard drive crashed
without warning 2 days ago. Please don’t beat me up about the backups, I already know how stupid it was to not backup a business critical machine. The hard drive is currently with a data recovery company and they estimate there is a 90% chance of 100% recovery
of the data. However, I want to be prepare for the worst and would like opinions on what my options are.
    Possible outcomes:
Everything is recovered and the Virtual Machine fires right up. (I am not very optimistic about this)
I am able to recover the exchange databases from the failed hard drive.
    Nothing is recovered.
Preferably option one is what occurs. However, please give me your thoughts on what the best way to get up and running ASAP if I can’t start the machine. I am not an expert but I had the following ideas:
If I am able to recover the database can I bring a new server up and move the database to it?
Bring a new server up, create a new database and import the user’s .PST files.
Since active directory was synced with Microsoft, maybe I can purchase Exchange Hosted and then import the user’s .pst files?
Any guidance on the above thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
There a multiple domain controllers in the environment and the old Exchange 2007 server is still up. I believe I still have backups of the Exchange 2007  server with all the mailboxes on it.

Alright, I am going to post a walk through in case it can help someone else in the future.
I brought a new Windows 2012 R2 server up and then proceeded to install Exchange 2013 with the recovery switch as BoS pointed out in his posted.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876880(v=exchg.150).aspx
    The installation failed with:
Disaster recovery setup needs access to the log drive C:\Program files\Microsoft Exchange\v15\mailbox\mailbox database
    xxxxxxxx to continue."
    and
"Disaster recovery setup needs access to the mailbox database drive C:\Program files\Microsoft Exchange\v15\mailbox\mailbox
database xxxxxxxx\mailbox database xxxxxxxx.edb to continue."
To get around the errors, I created the path on the hard drive C:\Program files\Microsoft Exchange\v15\mailbox\mailbox
database xxxxxxxx and then created a text file with an .edb extension and put it in the folder. On the second attempt to the install it failed with:
    Configuring Microsoft Exchange Server
    Preparing Setup
    COMPLETED
    Stopping Services                                        COMPLETED
    Copying Exchange Files                              COMPLETED
    Language Files                                            COMPLETED
    Restoring Services                                      COMPLETED
    Languages
     COMPLETED
    Hub Transport Server Role
    FAILED
    The following error was generated when "$error.Clear();
Install-ExchangeCertificate -DomainController $RoleDomainController -Services SMTP " was run: "The internal
transport certificate for the local server was damaged or missing in Active Directory. The problem has been fixed. However, if you have existing Edge Subscriptions, you must subscribe all Edge Transport servers again by using the New-EdgeSubscription cmdlet
    in the Shell.".
The solution in this post pointed me in the right direction:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/exchange/en-US/d3c443da-6977-43ac-9d20-dc2b0a619e89/exchange-2010-failed-recovery-help?forum=exchangesvravailabilityandisasterrecoverylegacy
    However, instead of
    "MsExchSyncCredential"
    it is “MsExchEdgeSyncCredential”.
On the third attempt to install the installation failed with:
A Setup failure previously occurred while installing the HubTransport role.
Either run Setup again for just this role, or remove the role using Control Panel.
By following the steps to delete the water mark as shown in example 5 on
This site I was able to complete the installation of Exchange.
After Exchange was installed I created a new mailbox database and mounted it. Even though I did not have the old database
I was able to associate all the email address from it with the new database by running the following in powershell:
    Get-Mailbox –Database “OldDatabaseName” | Set-Mailbox –Database “NewDatabaseName”
At this point users were able to start logging into the new Exchange server.
Using the pst files I made from Outlook I was able to import the data back into the new server by following the steps shown
    here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee332351(v=exchg.150).aspx
As Troy pointed out, the Outlook cache needs to be exported to .pst files before Outlook connects to the new server.
On a side note, previous to bringing the new server up, I made .pst files from the user’s offline folders in case everything was deleted when the user connected Outlook to the new server; it was not necessary. When
Outlook (2010 and 2013) connected to the new server a warning window popped up informing the user that their mailbox had been temporarily moved to a new server and gave them the option to use the temporary mailbox or their old data. At any time you should
be able to select the old data option and then export it to pst.
I am currently waiting to receive the logs and the Mailbox database back from the data retrieval company.
As soon as I have copies I am going to import any data that might be missing into the new database.

  • Advice Needed... which is better?

Hello...  I am not a computer 'genius", but not a complete "computer idiot' either.  I have a question, and then I will give my reasoning, because maybe it matters in the decision.
Which is better, a PC (Gateway) with 6GB Ram, i5 processor, 1.5TB HD  or an Imac 4GB Ram, i3 processor, 1TB HD??
Basically, I have had a Dell 2GB Ram desktop for 7 years, which suited me fine. I ran CS3 on it with no problems.  I recently had a virus, and had to swipe my computer, and when I re-installed Adobe, my Premiere Pro will no longer allow me to edit properly (audio plays fine, while video lags and skips around during viewing).  I know it is time to get a new computer either way, and a few friends have told me that I really shouldnt be running Premiere Pro on 2GB of ram, and suggested at least 6GB.
I found a Gateway for $650 on bestbuy site with the above specs... but then someone I know, told me I would be better with an Imac with the specs above.  Is that possible that a 4GB mac would run better than the 6GB PC?
also..  will CS3 work on the Windows 7 PC, but if I get Mac system I will be using CS5.
I use Photoshop, and Premier Pro for simple music video editing (5-6min videos).  I do not do anything major..but want to at least be able to view what I am doing.
    thanks

While I don't agree that Macs are as inferior as some here claim, for your purposes an i5 iMac is certainly inadequate. The i7 quad core iMac is something else again; it can take up to 16GB of RAM, which is plenty for most applications. The particular i7 CPU in the iMac is also quite capable with a number of performance enhancing technologies on board. The big problem with the iMac, though, is that it comes with only one internal HDD; there is an added SSD option, but in my opinion it's still too expensive. For video you should have at least two internal drives and preferable three or four, as others here have said. External drives are generally slower, even if you use a FireWire 800 port. Sometime this year Apple may add a Thunderbolt port to the iMac, as they have to the MacBook Pro. This will be a game changer for external media, with unheard of flexibility in connectivity and the performance of Fiber Chanel at an affordable price. There are already external RAIDs coming to market with Thunderbolt connections. However, there is no date certain for such an iMac refresh.
For even semi-serious video you need some heavy iron, whether Mac or PC. There are some great Mac Pros available now with up to 12 cores on two 6 core Intel Westmere processors; however, even though I am a Mac fan, I'm sure you can build or get a BTO Windows PC with comparable specs for less. I suggest a minimum of four modern CPU cores to handle multi-threading and multi-tasking chores. At least two fast internal hard drives, four is preferable. And, of course, the more RAM the better, though this too will raise the price. You may not get the maximum RAM right away; the important thing is that the motherboard be able to support substantial RAM upgrades so that you can grow into it.
The challenge, even with PCs, is that a number of core technologies are changing right now. SixGb/s hard drives are becoming available but it would take a high-end and relatively new motherboard to support them properly. So, besides the question of which computer to get, you have to consider when to get it. If you need it right now, that narrows your choices somewhat because you cannot wait for these new technologies to come on line.
The most important thing to consider, though, is not to cheap out. Presumably you will be doing some real work on it, so think of this computer as an investment in your own future. Buy the most computer you can afford and a little bit more. Oh, and there is a new Version of Final Cut Pro coming out soon that will be Intel only and 64 bit capable, so Apple is moving ahead on this front, too. Remember, not all of Adobe's CS apps are 64 bit yet either. It's just one more technology in transition.
One point I will concede, however, is that Windows has better video drivers than OS X. Even on a Mac, running Windows in Boot Camp delivers better video frame rates than the Mac versions of the same apps running in OS X. So, for reasons of cost and better video support, a Windows PC is probably the way to go. PCs also have it over Macs in the number of options available. If you are not a techie yourself, I agree as well that it is probably a good idea to have someone who is built it custom for you. Of course, with a custom PC you won't get the kind of warrantee that comes from Dell or Apple, but the person who builds it for you will probably be able to service it as well.
Ultimately, of course, your budget is likely to govern the kind of PC you get more than your preferred specs. But even with Windows PCs you get what you pay for. A cheap PC is just that, a cheap PC. Inexpensive PCs are affordable because they use inferior components. Keep that in mind.

  • Need opinions / benefits of previous experience - PD and external document repository integrations ....

We are using PD in support of our EA Program. Current efforts have been focused on getting started from a zero base and working on ensuring we have a consistent baseline for the 100(ish) business systems that this effort encompasses. This has largely been an exercise in locating existing (mostly dated) documentation, finding out that there are waaaaay more knowledge gaps than we originally expected, and authoring models to create a common baseline of knowledge aligned with our TOGAF based metamodel/framework. We have been developing baseline models for business areas and systems that encompass business process, application architecture and infrastructure architecture (all at higher levels more appropriate to EA overviews).
Anyway ..... along the way there have been boatloads of challenges locating documentation that is most often squirelled away in places where only a few people have access or it has been forgotten all-together. One of the next steps we are considering is consolidating and applying some mgmt and governance to the feeder knowledge. This knowledge would NEVER be considered for re-factoring/recreation in EA models and I estimate is about 5000 documents in various formats. I would like to complement the EA Repository (in PD) and our framework with an enterprise knowledge/document mgmt repository.
Ideally I would like to integrate the two at some level. In my ideal world (where the sun always shines and the people are all pretty!), I would see a document mgmt (DM) system where supporting docs are managed. Some of the classification metadata used in PD is applicable in DM. An integration in PD for pointing to External FIles managed in the DM would be present. PD would have custom scripting to pull/synchronize DM metadata for individual documents.
I would like to hear if any of you have tried or heard of someone trying to do something similar. If so, how did it turn out?
    A couple notes:
    1. I know that I could try to use PD as a sort of DM. Some work at scripting and creating a few extensions for the DM metadata framework would do the trick in the short term. However, I believe that I should be looking for tools suitable to the job and not try to make PD into something it is definitely not designed for. Unless you have seen an enterprise-scale usage of PD for something like this, I am probably not all that open to this path (that being said I am open to being convinced by strong argument/evidence).
    2. I think this place has some sort of enterprise licensing in place for Documentum so any experiences with that would be particularly interesting.
Thanks much for any input you might have.
    Bruce

    Hi Bruce,
As you say yourself It's not a good idea to use PD as a sort of DM.
Documentum has a tool for automatic classification. Content Intelligence Services. CIS allow to enables automatic classification and categorization of content in the Documentum repository. Its benefit is well organized, classified, and categorized content. With CIS, content is parsed and analyzed and classification rules are applied. The results of the classification can then be used for categorization as keywords to populate content metadata. The capability of automatically creating keywords to populate content metadata remove the burden from end users who otherwise have to do it manually.
That being said. So in Documentum documents are classified. In PD you can copy / paste the URL in one or more of the following objects fields (Comment, Notes/Description, Notes/Annotation) to the documents in Documentum. So you only have one authoritative source. From models you can double click on the link to go directly to the latest version of the documents in Documentum.
Do you want to import into the PD clasifications documents, keywords, made in Documentum?
You say "I would like to complement the EA Repository (in PD) and our framework with an enterprise knowledge/document mgmt repository." Do you think being able to present the results you're looking for? They say a picture is worth a thousand words
I apologize if I do not understand properly the need.
