Need partition icon in xfce desktop

Hi All ,
I am using Arch Linux with XFCE. I am just playing with all the options and I like to know how I can put the partition Icon for all the mounted partitions other than "/" partition. My mount tab is like
[root@arch ~]# mount | egrep ^/dev
/dev/sda3 on / type ext3 (rw)
/dev/sda7 on /media/home-deb type ext3 (rw)
/dev/sda6 on /media/debian type ext3 (rw)
I want to put partition icon for Debian and Debian home. The XFCE is automatically creating the partition icon for all the USB stick that I am plugging in. Not sure how to create partition ICON for internal mounted partitions. Your help will be appreciated.
Regards,
Unni

The only way I know, is to just create a .directory file inside the main directory. Take a look at ~/Desktop/.directory:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Icon=user-desktop
Type=Directory
You might be able to automate this by using a script (like p.e. get the mounted stuff using mount command and have it cp .directory files into the mounted dir's... there has to be a way to call that using udev or hal events or something too), but that's where my knowledge ends - no idea how exactly.
Is there a better way?

Yes, in fact, I named it XP SP-2 and put the Windows Flag as the Icon. Then I named my Mac drive OS X and put an old color version of the apple logo on there...

  • Custom icon for Boot Camp partition on Snow Leopard desktop?

I have a Boot Camp partition (NTFS) with Windows XP. In Snow Leopard, the partition shows on the desktop with a generic hard drive icon. I'd like to change this to a custom icon, but when trying to paste over the generic icon in the Get Info window, Edit->Paste is grayed out.
In Leopard, it was possible to have a custom icon for a Boot Camp partition by formatting a thumb drive as FAT32, pasting the custom icon onto it in the Get Info window, booting into Windows XP, and copying two invisible icon files from the thumb drive to the NTFS drive. This would display the custom icon for the Boot Camp partition icon on the Leopard desktop. This doesn't work in Snow Leopard.
Is it possible to use a custom icon for a Boot Camp partition on the Snow Leopard desktop?

I don't see this option in Properties for the Boot Camp volume. In any case, I believe the custom icon is set correctly for the C: drive in Windows. I followed he procedure in the second paragraph of my initial post, which I learned from a post over a year ago. I copied the two hidden files .VolumeIcons.icns and ._ File _ to the C: drive. When I boot into Leopard, the correct custom icon for the Boot Camp partition appears on the Leopard desktop. But when I boot into Snow Leopard, only a generic hard drive icon appears on the desktop for that partition.

I'd say your sister messed up and your iPod is toasted.
Think about it...  She plugged it in to another computer, she doesn't remember what she did (yeah, right), and now your iPod is not being recognized by your computer...
Also take into consideration how old is your sister, and how much does she know about electronics?

  • What is the circled number one under my drive icon on the desktop? I recently hooked up an external LaCie drive and hope I didn't partition my main drive somehow by mistake.

I noticed after installing an external LaCie Drive, that a circled number 1 appears under my drive icon on the desktop that was never there before. I have a iMac G5. I go to Disk Utility at times to erase or burn a disk. Could I have somehow partitioned my hard drive or what / why is that number appearing or is it normal? Thanks and I hope I didn't screw up the drive cause I'm a newbie and would hate to have to delete and reinstall. Could I have a tired machine? I have lots of GB's left and machine at times acts strange like will record something and default it to iMovie slide show unless I wasn't careful what file was open at the time. Can you tell me what the number means?

Try renameing it, but you might also check this...
n Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

  • XFCE, desktop icons not refreshing

Yesterday I tried to create 2 icons on my desktop but they didn't show up, today though when I start my computer the icons I created does exist. But now I can't delete the icons, well XFCE does say the icon doesn't exist if I try to delete it a second time. Why isn't XFCE refreshing my desktop icons? or is it suppose to refresh them only on login/logout?

Do you have "fam" installed and started ?

To set up the new AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) as a bridge, either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility, make these settings:
    Internet - Internet Connection tab
o Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
o Click Update to apply the new settings.

  • Erasrd Zip Disk 250 IOMEGA   Zip Disk icon dissappeared from desktop

I was experimenting for the purpose of learning how to erase a Zip Disk. It’s not necessary because you can simple remove existing folders from a Zip Disk and put new one on. This was sort of a controlled experiment.
This Zip Disk was a back up Zip Disk (removable media). So I made copies of the existing folders and put them in a safe place. So I did not lose data. I made backups for Folders on my Zip Disk and then deliberately erased the data on the Zip Disk itself.
I have an External IOMEGA 250 Zip Drive and I was using an IOMEGA 250 Zip Disk.
I went to (Mac Help) to get instructions on how to erase a disk or volume.
I opened Disk Utility I was instructed to select a Disk Volume or Image on the Left side of the window. On the left there was my
External Hard Drive IOMEGA icon 239.0 MB and under It was the classic (White) IOMEGA Zip Disk Icon 250MB.
    I believe I selected my:
External Zip Hard Drive Icon 239.0MB IOMEGA ZIP 250.
Then in the dialog box to the Right I selected the (Erase) button. In the Erase dialog box I entered the following information:
Volume Format: I Selected Mac OS Extended (Journal)
    Name: Zip 250
Check Box: Install Mac OS.9 Disk Driver
    Regarding this (check box)
    Mac Help Stated this:
If you plan to start up the disk in Mac OS 9 or if the disk will be connected to computer running OS 9 then check this box.
    So I checked this box
Options Button: I checked (Zero All Data)
    Erase Button: I hit erase
The erase procedure was not completed.
So I went back into the Erase dialog box this time I did not select anything from the
(Options Menu) Options were now listed as none.
I hit erase again and this time the erase was completed.
And upon completion I noticed that the (White) Zip 250 icon on my Desktop disappeared. I don't think that was supposed to happen.
I did notice that the External Zip Hard Drive was still listed in the Right Panel of my Disk Utility but the (White) Zip Disk250 icon had changed it now was listed as:
    Disk1s9
But the Zip Disk Icon itself was not showing on my desktop
So apparently I did not execute this erase experiment correctly!
For learning purposes I would like to receive instructions on how to get the (White) Zip 250 icon to mount so I can re-use this Zip Disk. And In the process learn the right way to do something like this. And to understand what is actually taking place.
Let me save you some time, as you try to trouble-shoot what I have done, by telling you what action I have already taken to fix this.
I went back to my Disk Utility:
Selected the (First Aid) Button in an attempt to Verify and Repair Volumes:
I Verified the Volume it was OK
I also Repaired Volume and it said OK
I then ejected the Zip Disk from the Disk Utility and simply reinserted it again to see if the (White) Zip 250 Icon would now be displayed on my Desktop. But it did not.
I then ejected the Zip Disk and turned off my computer and turned it back on and tried again to mount my Zip Disk to my Desktop.
    But to no avail
I then turned my computer off and upon restart I reset my Parameters
Zap the Pram, as they say and that did not work.
I then with the External IOMEGA 250 Zip Drive still plugged in to my USB Port; I again turned off my computer. While the computer was off I un-plugged the External IOMEGA 250 Zip Drive from the USB port and then plugged it back in, and turned my computer back on. I put my Zip Disk into my Zip Drive but it still did not mount the (Whit) Zip Disk Icon on my desktop.
Each time I ejected the Zip Disk and reinserted it a Message would display:
You have installed a Disk containing no volumes that Mac OSX can read to continue with the Disk inserted click (ignore) from following buttons"
    (Initialize) (Ignore) (Eject)
    Initialize simply opened Disk Utility.
So I then clicked (Ignore) and proceeded back to Disk Utility to mount a new image even though I did not need to retrieve any loss data. I thought what the heck, I will try it, may be I can get my (White) Zip 250 icon back on my desktop in the process.
So with Disk Utility opened from the above Main Menu I selected:
    Image:
    New:
    Image from disk1s9
Results I got an Error-39 Message?
With that I gave up and came to the Discussion Board to find out what I actually did wrong and how to repair it, and learn the right way to do something like this.
I am guessing that the new Zip Disk 1s9 listed in the Disk Utility is a major clue. I am assuming it is in reference to OS 9.2.2, I did check that box during the erasing procedure to install Mac OS 9 Disk Driver?
I hope I have not done any damage to my OS9 Operating System or caused OS 9 to malfunction in some way.
I have not gone into OS 9.2.2 yet to check for any malfunctions.
Also I thought I would mention this External Zip Driver is about 4 years old, so far it has worked well on both OS9.2.2 and OSX 10.3.9
So, I think what I have done is pretty straightforward and I hope the solution is simple and straightforward.
I would like some help with this so I can learn more and understand what I did and how to repair things.
Worse case scenario I can just buy another blank Zip Disk

    Beverly:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You apparently erased the formatted volume on your zip disk, so that Mac OS does not see it as a Mac disk.
Launch Disk Utility and select your zip disk (manufacturer ID) in left panel. Select Partition in the main panel. Name your Volume in the Name field. Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). You are about to create a Mac formatted volume on a single partition of your zip disk. Click Partition.
Let me know if this works for you.
    Good luck.

  • I have an IMAC I bought from a friend.  I think he wiped it clean.  I tried to go to panasonic to download a driver for my camcorder.  It put an icon on my desktop that is setup-1.exe  when I try to open it, it says I don't have a program to open it with.

I tried to download a driver from Panasonic for my camcorder.  It puts an Icon on my desktop that is called set-up1.exe.  when I try to open this I get an error message that says I don't have a program to open it.  any suggestions.  Also, I tried to download the latest ITunes.  It put an Icon on my desktop but won't let me open it or run it.

In general, you don't need drivers for camcorders on Macs, and the .exe file you downloaded is a Windows program, which won't run on a Mac unless you also have Windows installed.
It would help a lot if you tell us the exact model camcorder you are using, and what application you want to use it with.
Regarding iTunes, the latest version is iTunes 11.  You need to have OS X 10.6.8 or later to install iTunes 11.  Your profile says you have OS X 10.4.11, which is a much older version of OS X, so you won't be able to install iTunes 11.  (Here are the iTunes 11 specs.)

  • How can I remove an icon from my desktop that doesn't want to go?

I was unsuccessful in installing a particular program, so I thought I would just "wipe the slate clean" and try again. Unfortunately, the icon on my desktop doesn't want to go. Every time I try to move it into the TRASH, a note on the screen says, "The icon "iScrobbler" cannot be moved to the trash because it is open".
I've turned the computer off and on again, and I've tried the DELETE button, but the icon remains on my desktop. How can I remove it?

There can be many reasons why a file "doesn't want"
something. But you may be able to replace the file if
you can rename it. Follow the steps here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107426
If that doesn't help, you may need to delete it using
root user privileges. That's a very advanced and
risky method so you should consult with someone who
is experienced with that process. I have done it many
times to delete goofed files that have a mind of
    their own.
It didn't work, I'm sorry to say, but thanks for the idea. As to the "root user privileges" method, I wouldn't even consider it. My computer "skills" are definitely not at the level for trying anything that could be described in those terms. Still, there is hope. I found the creator of the program and sent him an e-mail message this morning.
Finally, I'd like to thank you again for your extraordinary performance. Talk about "service above and beyond.." well, that certainly describes you. I somehow feel that if you couldn't...no, no, let's not say that, let's just hope that the program's creator will be able to help. Thanks again for what you have done.

  • How do I delete an old version of card star when there is no icon on the desktop?

I received a notice at the App Store that an update for Cardstar was available.   This is on my Gen 1 iPad running iOS 6.1.3.  I clicked the upgrade button but the progress bar never indicated progress.  Cardstar is listed in Settings, but there is no icon on the desktop.  I speculate that during an Cloud synch with my iPhone, that this alias now shows up on the iPad.  I tried shutting down.  Can't find any way to delete from Settings.  On the App Store it shows up as active on my list of needed updates.  There, the Cardstar icon shows the progress bar with no progress and the "Installing" button is grayed out.  I am sure that  I didnt install it on any of my devices other than my iPhone.

Thanks.  You are right...by the serial number it is a Gen 2.  There seems to be a solution to my problem on the Cardstar website. I will try that.
    Thanks again.

    Hello everybody,
i don't know how to explain exactly my "problem" and what i want, but i'll try: a few months ago i upgraded my system and, at reboot, there was no more my old disordered xfce desktop but there was a new one, with always alligned icons and themes that i don't like so much ... sometimes, when i open the file manager and browse the directories, the old disordered xfce desktop reappears!!! I don't know if anyone has understood my problem, but, if any exists, can help me?
    Thanks!!!

I assume with 'disordered' you mean that the desktop icons can freely be moved around. That is not possible with xfdesktop (Xfce's desktop).
It could be possible that you use nautilus as file browser instead of thunar. That would explain this behaviour. Nautilus has a built-in desktop that also allows icons to be scaled and placed freely on the desktop. When you start nautilus and the desktop option is activated it will most likely replace xfdesktop.
If the assumptions above are correct, your best bet would be to remove xfdesktop (so it doesn't start/restart itself automatically) and add the following command to your autostart:
    nautilus -n
(This will start nautilus and therefore the desktop will appear. The "-n" switch prevents the nautilus window from opening up as well.)
