Need Powerbook G4 and Logic 7.1 Optimization advice

Hello Logic/Mac Users,
I need optimization advice for my portable logic setup.
I've got a PB G4 with a gig of ram, a Firewire 410, and some soft synths.
My goals are basically to come up with a few tracks of ideas, nothing too grand.
I basically want to use one track for Ultrabeat,
another two for a couple of soft synths like the G-Force stuff.
and Finally to plug in some bass guitar stuff via a Bass Pod Xt into the firewire device.
any tips on how to get the most out of this existing setup would be very appreciated.
I'm reading the manuals and playing with the tutorial tunes but any tips to expedite would be cool also.
Also any suggestions on how to max out performance on the powerbook would be great.
Regards
Adrian

Hi Stereovibe,
Your powerbook G4 could record some audio tracks but don't count on
adding plug-ins and instruments on top. A G4 processor is simply too slow
to process and run Logic Pro 8 smoothly. Don't put too much money upgrading since
you will not see a major speed bump doing so. I would keep my money and put towards
a Macbook Pro dual core, used or new.
My 2 cents,
Marc

  • PowerBook G4 and Logic Pro

    I have an old 17" PowerBook G4:
    Model Name: PowerBook G4 17"
    Model Identifier: PowerBook5,3
    Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
    Processor Speed: 1.33 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.7.1f1
And I'm using it for studio and live use. I'm using Logic Pro, Logic Express, Guitar Rig and Reason, mainly. I'm looking for tips on optimising the PowerBook and upgrading it to last me a little while longer. As it is, when I run Logic Pro, with even a small number of plugins, it regularly gives me the system overload message. I'm planning on upgrading the RAM from 1GB to 2GB. I am also planning on upgrading the HD and have 2 options. 1) Buy the Hitachi travelstar 100GB 7200RPM internal HD, which is expensive and low capacity. 2) But an external 320Gb OWC FireWire HD, which is cheaper and high capacity, but external. Someone mentioned to me that sometimes using an external HD uses system resources, and that an internal HD would be a better bet.
    So, any ideas?
    Cheers!

  • Kontakt 4.1.1 and Logic 9.1.1 needs Max buffer

I posted this on the NI forum too.I have 1 instance of Kontakt 4.1.1 in Logic 9.1.1 64bit with only 4 sounds loaded and have to set the buffer to Max 1024 otherwise all I get is clicks and pops on playback. The strange part is,when I first loaded this kontakt patch, it ran great with a buffer of 128.I left my computer for a couple hours and when I returned and hit play, everything was glitching out. When I bypass Kontakt, the song plays fine at a low buffer setting.when I run Kontakt, I get one of the CPU meters in Logic hitting red.Kontakt shows very low RAM and voice usage and I have 8 GB of RAM in a Mac Pro 2.66 Duo core.I have tried Logic in 32 bit mode, enabled Kontakt memory server, reloaded a blank Kontakt then loaded the patch.switched between Digi 192 (core audio) and Motu 828 MKII,rebooted, repaired permissions. The only way to get smooth playback is to set Logic's audio buffer to 1024 which makes it virtually impossible to play a part in real time.I know this isn't right as it was working fine at first.Any thoughts?

    Hello -
I have a similar set-up (noted below, with Mac OS X 10.6.4). I'm still experimenting with different configurations. Currently, I have Kontakt's memory server (don't remember its official name) engaged when in 64-bit mode (both Kontakt 4 and Logic Pro). On one project, I have a total of about 32 instruments in use including ones from Kontakt and EXS. All is well.
Now, it's my understanding that when in 64-bit mode, one doesn't need to use Kontakt's memory server. Have you tried either engaging or disengaging the server?
Also. . . I'm using MOTU's 2408 MK3. As far as I know, its drivers are updated to the latest ones. This also may be helping me out. Are the drivers to your audio drivers the "latest and the greatest"??
Finally, is your OS updated to 10.6.4? Your Info currently indicates that your using OS 10.6.3. (Don't know if this makes any difference.)
It's interesting how people can have similar set-ups with differing results.

I own Logic Pro 7( I used to have a PowerPC  and need to upgrade to Logic Pro 9 (new Intel chip, system 10.8) .  Do I need to buy a whole new set or do I upgrade for less cost?

The cost of the Full Logic Pro 9 from the App Store is less than the cost of the discontinued Boxed Upgrade set for Logic Studio (if you could find one) ... so you might as well purchase the full Logic Pro 9 from the App store and be done.

  • Need to put a logic in FDM where by accounts and ICP is compared and accord

    Hello ,
Need to put a logic in FDM where by accounts and ICP is compared and accordingly ICP field is modified. Need to create an array of accounts
    Scenario:
ICP needs to be derived based on account code. If account code is part of a predetermined list then further logic needs to be executed.
For ex. If Acc is part of the account list ("7880","7881","7882","7883","7340","7341",
    "7342","7343","7345","7347","7346","8460","8603","8484","8610","8611","8612","8614")
then if ICP <> 00000 then ICP = strfield
else if Acc not part of list then ICP = "00000".
We are facing issues in defining and referencing an array in FDM which would store the list of accounts code which can then be compared along with ICP. The other logic is as follows
    If strField <> "00000" And Val = Acc_Arr(i) Then
    T3 = strfield
    End If
    If strField = "00000" And Val = Acc_Arr(i) Then
    T3 = "ICPENT"
    End If
    If strField <> "00000" And Val <> Acc_Arr(i) Then
    T3 = "00000"
    End If
    If strField = "00000" And Val <> Acc_Arr(i) Then
    T3 = "00000"
    End If
    Regards,

    Hi,
    Two options:
    1. You can evaluate ICP based on either source account or target account. Use varValues(13) for source account and varValues(14) for target account in the conditional mapping statement for ICP.
    2. A faster performing option is to concatenate the Account and ICP into a single code, which you then import in the ICP dimentsion. You can then use simple mapping rules to do your ICP mappings and avoid conditional statements altogether.

  • Powerbooks, hard drives and Logic

Can anyone advise how to get more out of logic and my G4 1.67 powerbook with 1.5gig ram. I'm thinking to get an external drive - possibly a sata drive via cardbus. I'm sure I'd get better performance track countwise but I'm wondering if theres a way to improve performance of vitual instruments and logic generally by way of settings that utilise the drive. This possible? Any other tips welcome.

I have a travelling system that consists of a Mac 1.67 Ghz powerbook with 1.5 gb ram, a MOTU Ultralite and a 100 gb G Tech mini drive fw800 7200rpm.
I can get 1 instance of stylus rmx, 1 instance of trilogy, 1 string exs, a couple of pianos and a couple of synths like arturia minimoog or cs-80. Running 2 space reverbs and a couple of waves compressors.
With all of these running it is a little slow at times. But if you can't make a record with the above plugs then you're never going too.....
Ultralite kicks *** by the way!! I have a pro tools rig and a fireface 800 rig at home, and its up there as far as the quality of input.
Go and buy a g tech drive..they're around £220+vat which is quite expensive but worth every penny
    Best of luck

  • Help needed with Emagic AMT8/Unitor8 and Logic 9.01 Snow Leopard

    Hello
I have a strange problem here... I have an AMT8 connected via USB to my Mac Pro (directly, not via an USB-Hub) and 2 Unitor8s (one connected to the AMT8 and one to the first Unitor8).
I can see that the units communicate with each other, but when I open Logic Pro 9.0.1 there are only the first 8 Ports of the AMT8 available, the other 16 ports are greyed out). This happens using Snow Leopard. In Audio/Midi-Manager I can only see the AMT8 as well, although the unit name is AMT8/Unitor8).
When I go back to my other OS (10.5.8 with Logic Pro 8 latest version) all three units are working and I can see them in the Audio/Midi-Manager.
I reinstalled the AMT8-Drivers from the DVD (when I open the driver file it says V 2.2) but with no luck. So I know the units are working under 10.5.8 and Logic 8 but not under 10.6.1 with Logic 9.0.1.
I tried what was described in another topic (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10142376&#10142376) but it didn't change anything.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you for your help!

    Hi
Thanks for the link. I tried it but with no luck.
But at the moment it seems to work. I copied the EmagicUSBMIDIDriver.plugin from my previous 10.5.8 system to my new system and now it works which is strange because both drivers had the same file-size and date. Well, I'll see how stable it is...
    Thanks for your help!

  • Can you run logic 6 pro and logic 7 on the same PPC?

I was wondering if you could run logic 6 and logic 7 on the same computer.

Until I moved up to my overqualified quad G5, I would use Logic 7 and 6 under 10.3 and I used to run the old 6 under OS9 on occasions where I needed to use a couple of plugins that didn't seem to make the port from VST to AU. It seemed that everytime you updated 6, it created a new version and you were able to keep older versions if you liked ( and I did ) for whatever reason...my thinking was that if the newer upgrade didn't work, I could always go back a step. This is no longer an option though, is it! Progress?

  • Best practice on using Flashback and Logical Standby

    Hello,
I'm testing a fail-back scenario where I first need to activate a logical standby, then do some dummy transactions before I flashback this db and resme the redo apply. Here is what the steps look like:
    1)     Ensure logical standby is in-sync with primary
    2)     Enable flashback on standby
    3)     Create a flashback guaranteed restore point
    4)     Defer log shipping from primary
    5)     Activate the logical standby so it’s fully open to read-write
    6)     Dummy activities against the standby (which is now fully open)
    7)     Flashback the database to the guaranteed checkpoint
    8)     Resume log shipping on primary
    9)     Resume redo apply on secondary
In the end, i can see the log shipping is happening but the logical standby does not apply any of these..and there is no error in the alert log on Standby side. But the following query could explains why the standby is idle:
    SELECT TYPE, HIGH_SCN, STATUS FROM V$LOGSTDBY;
    TYPE HIGH_SCN STATUS
    COORDINATOR ORA-16240: Waiting for log file (thread# 2, sequence# 0)
ORA-16240: Waiting for log file (thread# string, sequence# string)
Cause: Process is idle waiting for additional log file to be available.
Action: No action necessary. This informational statement is provided to record the event for diagnostic purposes.
I dont understand why it's looking for sequence #0 after the flashback.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Problems with Presonus Firestudio and Logic

I am having problems with compatability with my brand new Presonus Firestudio recording interface and Logic pro 8. I am new to logic but not to home recording, and i cant understand what might be the problem. When i use the firestudio with garageband it works easily. In the garageband sound preferences there are input AND output channels that the user can define. (i.e. you can set your input channels to come from the firestudio while the output channels go to the computer speakers or headphone jacks or whatever you define it as).
From what i have seen in logic, there is only one option for your audio settings. when in preferences and under audio, there is a "device" setting in which you can define your audio device. Wheather this is input AND output for the program, i do not know. but the problem i am experiencing is that whenever i choose the firepod as the input device, no sound from logic will play from the speakers whatsoever. My first thought was that maybe ouput was going straight to the firestudio, but after plugging headphones into it this also did not work. Has anyone had success getting their firestudio to work in logic? if so let me know what settings you had to use, and how you got to moniter your input from from the firestudio via your computer.
    p.s.
another WIERD problem i have run into, is that if i shut off the firestudio while logic is open, alot of times it will shut down my whole computer. i have never heard of this happening. what am i doing wrong?
    thanks!

ah, I was hoping to find my solution here, but alas the thread is gone...
I recently bought a Macbook running Leopard, and am having difficulties with my PreSonus Firestudio Project thru Logic and Mainstage. I can get audio input and output just fine, but there's a ton of distortion/crackle. Kickstarting the sample rate seems to clear it up for a minute or two, but then the crackle comes back. The recorded tracks sound clean if I unplug the Firestudio, so apparently it's only in the monitoring stage?
On the PreSonus board, they're claiming it's Apple who needs to update drivers for Leopard; PreSonus says the "Firestudio Project is Leopard compatible."

    Hi,
I am working on a Applet where i have to do a lot of painting, the applet is kind of microsoft project, where u can define a activity as a rectangle and then u can select the rectangle and drag it to some other date,

You should only paint what is visible. For example if you are presenting a grid of 100 x 100 boxes. And each box is 20 pixels wide and 20 pixels high, then that would create an <image> the size of 2000 x 2000. That is big ;-)
What you want to do, is calculate what portion of the <image> that is viewable in your scrollpane and then only perform the paint operations on those boxes. For example, if the viewports width is 200 and its hieght is 80, then you should only paint 10 x 4 boxes (40 boxes total, each 20x20 pixels in size) -- The trick is figuring out what boxes need to be painted.!! I'll leave that up to you, but should be able to find code examples on the net doing something of this sort.
Hope this helps, and makes sense.

  • How big a hard drive do I need for iMac and Time Machine?

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere already. I am going to buy an iMac, probably the new 24" with a 320G internal HDD. I already have one Lacie external 320G HDD so I was wondering whether I can use this for Time Machine backups, or do I need to buy a bigger one? If so, how big? Is there a rule of thumb for working out how much hard drive space you need to have for Time Machine, for instance if I were to buy the 500G iMac what would I need?
    thanks.

I agree with the "double the size" rule of thumb. You should also consider how much of the 320GB you are actually using and are likely to use in the next year or two. After all, it's the amount of storage you use that matters, not the size of the disk. Disks will very likely be cheaper soon. You should also keep in mind that TM deletes old archive data when it runs out of disk space. So as long as you have more disk space than you have data to back up, TM will work, though you will lose older versions of your data.
So if your 320GB drive only has 100GB used and you're not the kind of person who eats up disk like there's no tomorrow, the 320GB drive should be fine for now. If you expect that 320GB disk to be full soon then a 750GB TM disk is more like what you need.
The same logic applies to a 500GB iMac. If you only expect to use 250GB in the next year or two then a 500GB TM disk should be OK. A 1TB drive will be a lot cheaper next year or the year after.
