Need printer for scanning negative/slides

Recommend a good printer for scanning pictures/slides as OX 10.9.1 does not recognize TWAIN from my HP Photosmart 3210 and can't use 3d market software, have to use System Pref/scanner. Very Limited.

since this forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and not related to Mac software, you should probably post your question in the OS X forums.
Otherwise, your best bet would be to probably purchase Read IRIS for Mac, as there is most likely no freeware OCR software for Mac.

  • Is Lightroom appropriate for scanned negatives and pictures

What little I have read about Lightroom assumes pictures taken with a digital camera. I have two digital cameras (Nikon D70 and Canon Elf IS 850) which give me reason to try Lightroom, and it has been recommended to me by a big-time photography acquaintance. Photoshop CS3 is what I am using.
I have hundreds (more likely thousands) of pictures I have scanned from old negatives and old prints (don't be surprised, as I am old and retired). My oldest photograph is an 1882 print of my grandfather milking a cow with my mother's comment in her scrapbook: "Dad can milk a cow!" Not surprising, as his parents had a farm, though my mother knew him as the owner of a small town hotel. I've a negative from about 1912 which I successfully scanned.
I have black and whites copied from my mother's scrapbook pictures, black and whites from black and white negatives of my children's youth, and color negatives from when color became affordable.
I think you get the picture.
The question again: Will Lightroom be helpful with these old pictures, be they from prints or negatives?
Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Nikon Scan V and Epson Perfection 3200 scanners

    Hi,
I'm using Lightroom for processing and cataloging scans of both old slides and even older prints, and find it very convenient to use. Firstly the develop capabilities are pretty good for adjusting white balance and tone curve either on individual images or batch processing (e.g. correcting a magenta cast or skylight haze on a whole box of slides in one go). My slide scanner does a decent job of auto cropping the slides though I imagine LR would be good for this if not, however I do have to manually crop and straighten scans of prints from my flatbed scanner, and the lightroom UI seems to me to be good for that also.
I have also converted my initial 16 bit uncompressed TIFFs from the scanners to DNG, saving a fair amount of space (~30%). Some would argue this is totally unnecessary as you could compress the TIFFs instead, but I find the conversion to DNG within LR very easy to carry out, and I also find it gives better (lossless) compression especially on the somewhat grainy 16 bit scans. Once I'm happy with all the color and tone curve adjustments I'll probably produce 8 bit LZW Tiffs to archive and maybe discard the still huge 16 bit DNGs (depending on the cost of storage at that time).
I think Lightroom is also very good for the task due to the integrated nature of the DAM and Develop tools - it doesn't force you into a fixed sequence of working (such as having to do developing before cataloging and other metadata operations or vice versa).
EDIT: I just realized you're referring to Negatives, not slides, so you might find the Develop tools a bit harder to use as LR isn't optimized for handling non-camera images especially negatives, though as someone else noted there are some work-arounds for handling negative conversion. However once you manage to produce positives somehow, I'd definitely recommend LR for further work.

How does the 6500 slide hard reset?
    That's simple.
All you have to do is:
From MENU goto SETTINGS, When there scroll down and select 'Restore Factory Setting'.
There are two options in there:
    "Restore Settings only"
    and
    "Restore all"
    Select "Restore All"
When done the phone will delete every thing on the Phone memory(C:\)(contacts,picture,messages etc)
and also restore phone to its original settings and will restart.
This proceedure is mostly common on S40 phone.
Hope this explain and solve the problem.

  • What is best printer for scanning

my hp c410a does not work with mtn lion

Any of the multifunction printers or standalone scanners on the Apple Store will work with your Mac. Check reviews there. You can almost always find them cheaper on Amazon or Newegg. Personally, I like the Canon Pixma MX series - they're not the most sophisticated printers in the world, but they scan duplex and work with the built-in scanning panel in OS X.

  • Image Date conventions for scans/copies?

    Hello Aperturers;
Just searched for a few keywords without success. What I'm about to do is digitally photograph and scan old photo prints/news clips/negatives/slides for use in Aperture.
Some of the images don't have a date or a specific one. Say, an old family photo might not be marked at all, or only with a year, or one could guesstimate based on apparent ages of people in the photo.
I'd like as much as possible to have these digitized files line up in sequential order, and am wondering what techniques folks use to assign image dates, either changing EXIF in Aperture or adding IPTC fields.
For instance, if I decide an unmarked photo is from 1925, what month/date to use, or will Aperture accept blank month/date? If an image is from a known month/year, then what date?
Do veterans of this kind of work have a standardized date convention? ie if only the year is known or estimated, is Jan 1 or Dec 31 used? If only month is known, is the 15th used as the date, etc?
    Thanks for the help,
    dave.

My scanner produced files without exif data, and while Aperture will change exif data, it won't add it to files that do not have it.
I also wanted my scanned slides and negatives to sort by image date like the digital files.
There is an excellent donationware program for the mac called SetExifData (www.marc.vos.net). Use this program before importing the files into Aperture to assign image dates. It works well on batches.
My work flow was as follows: import a bunch of old scanned negatives of a tripor event into a project in Aperture. Use aperture to put them in the right order and then to rename the files with some incrementing naming scheme. Export the project to a folder. The Finder can now keep them in proper order because of the filename change. Use SetExifData to create the exif data and set the capture date to some arbitrarily increasing time/date so they will sort properly by image date. Then Import back into Aperture. They now get treated just like a file from a digital camera.
I've done this with thousands of old slides and negatives and once done it makes life a lot simpler.

  • Transfering scanned 35mm slides

What is the suggested file size for scanned 35mm slides to transfer to iDVD? My file sizes I believe are too small at about 260Kb per image, and I think the processor is working so hard to bring them up to the iDVD format, that more often then not, during the burn process my computer will freeze up entirely. And the ones that do complete the burn process, the images are poor quality when watched on a regular television. I am currently using an Epson Perfection to perform the scanning process. thanks for any help.

I would appreciate it if someone could advise me as to the optimum resolution, dimensions and dpi for actual photographic slides that I am scanning for use in a Keynote Presentation, that will be projected in a large auditorium. I realize that most projectors in auditoriums that I will be using have 1024 x 1200 pixels, and possibly 1600 x 1200. There is no reference to this issue in the Keynote Tutorial supplied by Apple, and I have never found a definitive answer to this issue online (although there may be one).
Here’s my question: When scanning my photographic slides, what setting, from 72 dpi to 300 dpi, would result in the best image quality and use up the most efficient amount of space?
Here’s what two different photo slide scanning service suppliers have told me:
Supplier No. 1 tells me that they can scan slides to a size of 1544 x 1024 pixels, at 72 dpi, which will be 763 KB, and they refer to this as low resolution (a JPEG). However, I noticed when I looked at these scanned slides, the size of the slides varied, with a maximum of 1.8 MB. This supplier says that the dpi doesn’t matter when it comes to the quality of the final digital image, that it is the dimensions that matter.  They say that if they scanned a slide to a higher resolution (2048 x 3072), they would still scan it at 72 dpi.
Supplier No. 2: They tell me that in order to have a high quality image made from a photographic slide (starting with a 35 mm slide, in all cases), I need to have a “1280 pixel dimension slide, a JPEG, at 300 dpi, that is 8 MB per image.” However, this supplier also offers, on its list of services, a “Standard Resolution JPEG (4MB file/image – 3088 x 2048), as well as a “High Resolution JPEG (8 MB file/image – 3088x2048).
I will be presenting my Keynotes with my MacBook Pro, and will not have a chance to try out the presentations in advance, since the lecture location is far from my home, so that is not an option.
I do not want to use up more memory than necessary on my laptop.  I also want to have the best quality image.
One more question: When scanning images myself, on my own scanner, for my Keynote presentations, would I be better off scanning them as JPEGs or TIFFs? I have been told that a TIFF is better because it is less compressed.
Any enlightenment on this subject would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

When it comes to Keynote, I try and start with a presentation that's 1680 x 1050 preset or something in that range.  Most projectors that you'll get at a conference won't project much higher than that and if they run at a lower resolution, it's better to have the device downsize your Keynote.  Anything is better than having the projector try and upsize your presentation... you work hard to make it look good, and it's mangled by some tired Epson projector.
As far as slides go, scan them in at 150 dpi or better, and make them at least the dimensions of your presentation.  Keynote is really only wanting 72dpi, but I do them at 150, just in case I need to print out the presentation as a handout later, and having the pix at 150 dpi gives me a little help with their quality on a printer.
You'd probably have to drop in the 150 versions again if you output the Keynote to .pdf or Word or something, but at least you have the option.
And Gary's right (above) go ahead and scan them as TIFFs.  Sooner or later you'll want to do something else with these slides (like make something for an iPad or the like) and having them as TIFFs keeps your presentation looking good.
Finally, and this is a big one, get to the location for your presentation ahead of time if you can, and plug the laptop in and see what you get.  There's always connection problems. Don't let the AV bonehead tell you everything will work just fine ('... I don't have any adapters for a Mac...') .  See it for yourself... you're the one that's standing up there.  Unless it's your boss, then you better be really sure it works.

  • How do i print from a scanned negative?

I scanned an old negative to my computer; how do I convert it to a positive image so it can be printed.  I am using Photoshop Elements 10

    Found this, it worked.
    Apply the Invert filter
The Invert filter inverts the colors in an image. Use this command, for example, to make a positive black-and-white image negative or to make a positive from a scanned black-and-white negative.
note: Because color print film contains an orange mask in its base, the Invert command cannot make accurate positive images from scanned color negatives. Be sure to use the proper settings for color negatives when scanning film on slide scanners.
When you invert an image, the brightness value of each pixel is converted into the inverse value on the 256‑step color-values scale. For example, a pixel in a positive image with a value of 255 is changed to 0.
    1.     Select an image, layer, or area.
    2.     Choose Filter > Adjustments > Invert.

  • I'd like to buy an all-one print, scan, fax wireless laser printer for my Mac.  Any suggestions?

Any suggestions for a laser all-one, wireless, print, scan, fax printer for my Mac Air?
    Suggestions gratefully accepted.

Yes printers (their drivers mostly) can become obsolete. Laser printers are so inexpensive I would lean that direction (often new ink cost more than a new printer). That being said when you combine functions you make sacrifices. A laser printer/fax would be, in my opinion, the way to go. If you need a scanner I would make it separate.
I have had good luck with HP - the school district I worked for also used (standardized) to HP. At times Epson has worked well with Mac's - and then there are other times. I think as long as you stay with a top tier brand (look at what Apple is bundling with their new sales) you'll be all right.
Of course you budget, the number of times you expect to scan, fax and print should drive the decision.
I have a ~$100 Brother Laser Printer networked through my Mac Pro (it prints wirelessly) and has done so for going on 10 years. I have an HP Photosmart 6800 about the same age. As you can tell I'm not a fan of AIO's.

  • Need a printer for MacBook Pro - ideas?

I need a printer for my MacBook Pro. I want to be able to copy, print, scan and fax, and I want wireless capabilities. Considering an Epson Workforce 845 that had a good review on cnet. Any input would be appreciated.
    Cassandra

I just ordered the HP C410a from Amazon.
It was rated very high on the list of Consumer Reports tested printers.
The Epson Workforce 845 was not tested, But the Workforce 840 and 835 were 2/3's down the list of approx.54 all-in-ones. They only rated fair at most of the printers functions. They had a $1.00 more per month ink cost then the HP. The HP, I linked, was rated very good to excellent on all it's function tests and placed 4 from the top of the list.
Interesting to me, out of the 54 printers not many had a fax function!
How can you say you are an all-in-one when you only scan, copy and print? I know faxing is less used these days but I still need it on occasion.

  • Need Printer driver for F4240 on Vista

I've been using this printer for years with no trouble.  All of a sudden, it stopped working.  My system said it needed a driver.  For the life of me, I cannot find one.  The installation disk that came with the printer does no good.  None of the HP assisting utilities does any good for locating a driver.  Can somebody PLEASE help me?  I don't have time to investigate, purchase, and install another printer.  I need a driver for the F4240 now.  Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Hello , and welcome to the HP Forums! I see you're having issues regarding your drivers.  I would like to help! Do you have any issues making a copy? I'd recommend starting with a power reset.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would also recommend downloading and running the HP Print and Scan Doctor. Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • Photosmart 7510 will not scan. Printing, faxing, Eprint all work, but no software for scanning

I have spent over 10hrs on the phone with Tech Support, Cloud service, and an HP escalation manager.  The HP escalation manager ran a scrubber tool to completely remove all of the HP printer software and reinstalled.  Now everything works except for Scan.
Using the HP Scan utility from the PC gives, "The HP Photosmart 7510 series was not found"
Using Scan to Computer for the printer display gives, "Make sure HP Printer software is installed".  I can, however, scan to a memory chip inserted into the computer, but is produces a jpg file and I need PDF.  All of  the scanning software used to work before tech support and HP escalation got involved.
