Need program to safely scrub free space and deleted files and parts of file
In PC world they have CCleaner and R-Wipe & Clean and a half-dozen other well-regarded programs that clean up the junk off your drive, sanitizing it while not touching the data still in use. Are there such programs with good reputations in the Mac world? What be they?
Thanks, I have used that. I'm not so sure it is as thorough as the programs I mentioned for the PC, which take out fragments of sectors, various histories, cookies, bits of remaindered programs, etc. And they are much quicker, seems to me, than the Erase Free Space in Disk Utilities to boot (even the straight write zeros is slow in DU).
So I was looking for some free or commercial products that offered a range of methods and good speed, as well as a broad range of "intelligent" pruning.

Windows needs more than 20GB. I recommend 60GB minimum. You might get Windows to istall in 20GB but it won't run. You won't have any space for page files, programs, temp files, data, etc.
And yes the space needs to be contiguous. Plus you need to leave enough free space, 15% of your disk size, for OSx to run. -

I did an iphone 4 software update. It then asked me to do a "restore" in order for me to be able to use the latest iTunes. I did a "restore" to "factory settings" (this was the only option listed) thinking I'd be able to sync later and get everything back and ended up losing all my purchased apps and iTunes. When I open iTunes, "Welcome to your new iphone" and it says I can re-do the "restore" and choose my lastest update. I assume this will give me back my apps and iTunes. When i choose to do this, it says there isn't enough space on the iPhone. How do I know how much space needs to be freed up? I keep deleting photos and videos from the phone, but I'm still getting the same message every time I re-try. I don't want to delete everything, but I don't know what to do...? Thanks!
Thanks but I think it has something to do with the 'restore'. in the newest iTunes 11, when I click on the tab "iphone", it redirects me to the "welcome to your new iphone" page and asks about doing a 'restore'. I already did a 'restore', but it went to the original factory settings and I want to 'restore' to my lastest back up as of April 12. When I choose that option, it says my iphone doesn't have enough space. I don't know how much I need to delete in order to make it work. I've deleted lots, but it only has 4.1 GB available. I'm not sure why this isn't enough to do a 'restore'. I don't want to delete all my photos and videos, but maybe I will have to?...7.7GB is used up for that. I can't sync or do ANYTHING...

I erased free space in Disk Utility, and after it finished it kept a DMG there called "DeveloperDiskImage.dmg", why is it left behind? can it be deleted? how? if erasing free space is supposed to help get memory and remove all the files truly, it shouldnt be creating anything, it created a DMG at the start, but it went away, after a hour and a half it made the DeveloperDiskImage, i went to eat dinner and when i came back it was done but that was left.
Delete it. Erasing the free space isn't supposed to free up any space; it's there in case someone deleted a file insecurely when they meant to securely delete it.

I get an error message when importing from iPhoto that says, "There is not enough free space on your Aperture Library volume to import the selected items. It is estimated that you need at least 44GB of free space." the drive is empty, I just reformatted it to Mac OSX journaled.
I'm guessing this is an extrenal drive, correct? If so make sure the library you're importimng into is really located on the external drive. By default Aperture creates its library in your home pictures folder.

My computer crashed and I cant reload firefox.. I have tried the task manager and deleting uninstalling and installing program again. I click on icon and nothing appears although it appears to start and is running in task manager, but the browser wont open.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

I installed Windows 7 in my Macbook pro, I can access Windows data in Mac, but I can't copy and delete it. and the same case while i am working in Windows. Could you please guide me if there is any solution, where I could copy/paste/delete my data.
OS X can natively read NTFS of Windows, but not write to it.
Windows can't read or write to HFS+ of OSX, and that's a good thing from a security standpoint.
Ideally if you share files between operating systems you should have a FAT/MSDOS formated USB key or hard drive. (exFAT external drive if any of your files are over 4GB in size) both these formats are universal for OS X or Windows.
If you install software into Windows and OS X to read each others formats, then you have to pay to update/upgrade it deal with headaches.
If you swtich between Windows and OS X a lot, don't need full hardware performance for Windows, you may consider installing virtual machine software like VMFusion or Parallels which can take a copy of your Windows in Bootcamp and place it into OS X as a file then run that copy of Windows in a window in OS X like so.
Advantage here is you run most of your light weight Windows programs like this at the same time as OS X.
Benefit is you can run just about any Windows or Linux version and OSX server editions (not client versions)
Bootcamp only allows Windows 7, that's it now.
You'll also be interested in two fre pieces of software, Carbon Copy Cloner and Winclone on macupdate.com.
CCC clones OS X partition and Winclone clones the Bootcamp partition. Valuable for you.

Every time I right click on an image and select Download image Firefox crashes . I have reinstalled; uninstalled and deleted folders and then reinstalled; added no plugins; checked I can DL the same images in IE-works good.I use Win7 pro and it works in other profiles in Windows 7. I created a new profile in Windows and that worked for about 2 months and now that has gone the same way as my admin profile has done. I deleted the sqlite download file-still same prob..Please help. I use Firefox 13.0.1
That sounds very frustrating.
By the way, does it say "Download image" or "Save Image As"? Just checking whether you have an add-on downloader in the mix that might be relevant. If you do have an add-on, try using the built-in command.
Do you also crash if you save from here:
right-click page > View Page Info > Media tab > (select image) > Save As

Have you tried the new Reset feature in Firefox 13? This duplicates certain key data from your active settings folder into a new one, bypassing some add-ons and custom settings. Your plugins will still be active, but could be disabled manually if you like.

If the new settings folder has the same problem, you can switch back if you like using Firefox's Profile Manager.

How exactly are you doing this?
When I cut out a part of an audio region, then drag the remaining parts together, so they are touching, the track will skip the cut out section when playing the file. Also, if I select the remaining parts of the region and use the command "Edit > join regions". This will create a new audio file with the cut out part deleted.

As Terence said you're experiencing a kernel panic. Boot into your System install disk and launch Disk Utility from the Utilities menu in the first window after the language selection window. Repair the disk. If DU finds problems and runs repairs do it a second time and then reboot.

Need help with the "Erase Free Space" disk utility
When I use Disk Utilities to Erase Free Space (I use the single zero mode) I get a message telling me,
"Your Startup Disk is almost Full,
you need to make more space available
on your startup disk by deleting files."
This occurs about 90% of the way through the process (based on where the blue bar is at the time) during the "Creating Temporary File" portion of the process. I know from past experience that I will remain in this portion of the process forever unless I press the "Skip" button to complete the process.
My questions,
1. What is the startup disk and why is it full?
2. What should I do about the Your Startup Disk is Almost Full warning?
3. Is my computer actually talking about "regular" disk space (I currently have about 9GB of 80GB free but have seen this warning with 30GB available as well).
4. When I press "Skip" and the blue bar continues to complete the process, have I actually erased free space?
PBG4 15" 80GB HD 1GB RAM Mac OS X (10.4)The Disk Utility does the erase by creating large temporary files, writing to them, then deleting them. While doing this, OSX may notice the lack of free space on the disk. This is normal, but could cause problems if you are also running some applications that want some disk space. If you let if finish, it should delete the temporary files and free the disk space.
I prefer to run the Disk Utility from the Tiger install disk when doing a Verify, Repair, or Erase Free Space on my boot disk, so I know I won't be interfering with anything running.
