Need protected files and a .pdf proof in InDesign

Im fairly new to InDesign and have just completed an announcement and have it saved. Now, I am wanting to create a .pdf to submit to someone else to look at it, but I dont want them to be able to edit it at all (like a proof). So, does that mean that I need to first "pack" my files, then flatten it, then create the .pdf? Ive never done any of these and I am having a hard time understanding what "flatten" actually is.
I know of people who use Photoshop who flatten their work before providing any .pdf or .jpeg files so that others are not able to modify their work. The other reason I want my work not to be modified is that there are elements in the announcement for which I have purchased from others (they use Photoshop). They have requested that any elements that I have purchased from them be flattened, so that it protects their work (and of course, I want to protect mine as well).
In the mean time, I will continue to search the forums for answers.

Oh and let me just add this info as well...I have 10 layers. FYI: i just read some info about flattening in Photoshop (although Im using ID)...keep everything editiable, do a copy merge, combine elements to keep file size low (so you dont have to flatten) and flatten for transparecies. Confused.

Yes, I agree with your first statement. Im guessing the elements I am buying are being custom made by the person Im buying from and they want to ensure its not being taken by non buyers. If its not secure, someone could just move the element into a file on their computer and use it anyway they want and not buy it from the party who made it. So it appears that the parties Im buying the elements from seem to believe that flattening their work prevents files from being stolen as they have it written in the TOU's that their work is copyrighted and when I buy an element I get a TOU on how I can use it commercially. Some sellers are picky on how you can use their work..and I must use the purchased element in a new creation as part of my work and flatten it before I distribute it.
Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, I would not ever see any clients face to face as they'd purchse my announcements online. For the most part, purchasers of my work would be consumers who know nothing about ID, so I could trust that they would not be able to edit my files. However, there could be others who do know how to use such publishing software....either clients or those who also make announcements as well.

iTunes can only burn files that are in its library, so forget about PDFs.
Yes it can be done with other programs, using a data (not audio) CD format.

Password protect files and folders Creative Cloud Files

I know this feature has been requested a number of times, but I'm just wondering if anyone knows whether or not the ability to password protect files and folders for sharing purposes is in the works? It appears to be a glaring omission to me, particularly as Adobe's vision for the Creative Cloud encompasses the corporate world, where security is obviously of great importance.
Any news would be welcome.

How to generate PDF using FDF file and the PDF form template (PHP)

I'm really sorry that I couldn't follow all the valuable discussions going on here, regularly. I need some immediate help.
I NEED A PHP SOLUTION. I'm able to generate FDF files using the PDF Form Template in PHP. So, I have a collection of FDF files, which seeks the PDF template, while opened and populates the template with FDF data. Now if I need to save this PDF file, I have to do it manually clicking SAVE option. But, I need to convert FDF to PDF in bulk. So, I need some PHP based solution. The PHP script takes the PDF template and the FDF file and merges them to generate a complete populated PDF file. I know it's possible, but don't know how. I've seen Adobe FDF Toolkit. But by default it doesn't show any guideline for PHP. Please help me to write this code. I'm a professional coder. I can understand your hints and tutorials. PLEASE HELP GOOD PEOPLE.

The only reason I am responding to this post is because the poster sent me a request through the forum message system asking for my help.
Although I did populate PDFs with FDF data generated by web forms a year or so ago, I have since abandoned that kind of solution. It was a big headache. I found it far more stable and flexible to use html, php and css to populate forms that are almost as nice looking as PDFs.
So my advice is, if you can possibly avoid going the FDF/PDF route, you will be better off.

If you still would like to use Ibooks you can add Collections. i.e.. work pdf's
View your collections, add a new one.
Now go to the pdf's you want to add to that collection and move them to the new collection you have just created.

When will we be able to open and edit PDF documents in Indesign?

It would be nice if Indesign could open PDF files.
When will this happen (without a plugin)?
Today I need to open the files in Illustrator. The customer prefers to use Indesign, so even though Indesign can export pdf documents I will have to tell the customer and the program can not open pdf files. This I find really weird.
Hopefully opening and editing pdf files in Indesign will happen real soon.

Paal, I'm sorry for that little out-lash. There is nothing wrong with inquiring the feasability of a new feature. The problem is that PDF has been an "output intended format" from the very beginning.
An Illustrator file (from a fairly modern version) also is a PDF file, for all intents and purposes. You can rename an .AI file to .PDF and use it anywhere, with any software that supports PDF (so that's excepting Apple's Preview, probably ;-) ). Moreover, you can still open and edit this PDF with Illustrator and get all of your objects, symbols, layers, paragraph styles, and guides back!
That's because in fact this file *contains* all this extra information in a data block marked "For Private Use Only". Other software, if adhering to Adobe's PDF specs, will simply ignore this (and thus my little jab at Apple's Preview). Does that mean you can edit such a PDF with *any* software? No -- the Illustrator data is "proprietary", and the details are not published to use by other software developers. Similarly, one could envisage InDesign to do the same. Yes, it would lead to *huge* files -- but hey, you would be able to open THAT file into InDesign and edit it. But not with any other software!
The meta-problem is that an extremely large amount of this private data would be *extremely* dependant on the software that was used to create it with. What would an Illustrator file do with InDesign's GREP styles? What would InDesign do with Illlustrator's brush styles, or symbols? Illustrator allows slanted guides, InDesign does not.
And let's not focus purely on a combo of ID and Illy; Photoshop *also* outputs PDFs, and its graphic data has yet another set of requirements.
So all of Adobe's software would need to be able to parse *every others' data* to some degree. Well, it's still not "unconceivable" as all of this would need to be done in one office (note that in that single office there are still vast differences in something as straightforward as a User Interface across the CS suite). But there are lots of other software developers out there, and they *all* want to write out PDFs, all with their own internal data! (Think of the different requirements between an architectural app and one for graph plotting.)
A *possible* solution would be to add "more" metadata to a PDF without crossing into the realm of "every single bit". Article tagging is an example of this -- it tells software that wants to know in which order *plain text* is to appear, and as such it serves as meta-data for plain text content. But the mind reels thinking of what more to add -- a list of used GREP styles per paragraph would probably be useless to anyone else.
But such an idea will not solve the problem, as 1. this meta-data is optional (lazy programmers would be allowed to say "nothing to see here, move along"), and 2. this data would only get added to *newly created* files, and it would not retroactively make older PDFs editable ...

The ExportPDF online service lets you convert PDF files to Word or Excel format. If you want to create or combine PDFs, then you would want to consider Adobe PDF Pack or Adobe Acrobat.

Using CS5 - need to edit and save pdf

I have a pdf file that is a sales flyer. I need to edit just the first page of the 50 page pdf file. I can open and edit page 1 no problem. I need to know how to save it back into the complete pdf file as page 1. Right now all I can figure out is how to save that individual page.

You cannot. You still need Acrobat or InDesign somewhere in there to merge your edited page back with the others. That being said, the whole thing could still explode in your face as PDFs are simply not meant to be editable work files...

Is there any way to password protect a folder? I'd like to password protect my iChat logs, so that iChat can still write to them and I can still access them via spotlight, however to open any of them I'd need a password. Is there a way to do it?

Create an encrypted sparse disk image with Disk Utility without saving your password in the keychain, mount the disk and copy your files or folders, then make an alias of the files or folder that are in the disk image to anywhere you prefer. When you access the alias, the disk image will mount and ask for your password.

Can I publish both an .ibooks file and a PDF of the same title to iBookstore?

I created a multitouch book in iBooks Author that I want to publish to the iBookstore. If I publish it as an .ibooks file, it has all the awesome multi-touch functionality for iPad, which I deifnitley want. However, .ibooks books cannot be read on the iPhone. I also want the book to be available through the iBookstore in a format that can be read on iPhone.
Can I publish my title as a PDF of the book IN ADDITION to the .ibooks version, and have them both available on the iBookstore?

While there are PDFs available, they tend to be Apple's own content, I think.
If one will do, you don't need two.
This question has come up before, so I'll just repeat my original response. If the two versions are the same, and you're sincere about a desire to support iPhone & iPad, just do one epub.
If the iBA version for iPad is different, then they are not the same and you have two books so knock yourself out.
Users may be confused if you manage to get two of the same in the store, and they don't know which to buy or buy one and then find out they wanted the other....this is why I'd expect pushback from Apple during review if you even tried.

Opening internet linked encrypted files and printing pdf documents

I can't open an encrypted file that requires an link to a remote server, the system says the computer does not have an internet connection, but it does. I also can't print a page from a non-encrypted pdf file which I can open and display. The printer doesn't respond, yet it works with everything else. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Reader 11.0.10 twice and also installed it again and replaced with Adobe READER 10.1.4. Neither of these changes make any difference. I've also disconnected the fire wall but to no avail. I now have the following Adobe programmes installed :- Adobe X 10.1.4, AIR, Flash Player 10 plugin, Flash Player 16 ActiveX. Can anybody help? Do I also need to install Adobe Acrobat and if so is there a free version?

Maybe that method does not use Adobe Reader, but your operating system's print function?

Word 2008 is pretty much the same as Word 2004, except it's more confusing with the additionnal Ribbon bar, that brings no value-added really, so I would never recommend to invest a single dollar in it. Word 2011 on the other hand, finally has a true Ribbon interface, makes it easier to design documents, is much faster and optimized, is still supported by Microsoft, and last but not least the whole suite re-enables VBA code that had disappeared completely in 2008. You can even work with true Outlook 2011 if you want.
