Need recommendation...convert vhs-- usb, etc.

Hello:
I realize this is probably a VERY old topic because I'm the last human on earth to get around to wanting to digitize old vhs cam tapes....but hoping someone here can give me some good recommendations. I have a nice (but OLD) JVC vhs-compact camcorder. It has mono audio out & video out rca jacks. Need a converter to USB I assume to import to my white macbook. These are old family home movies. I *don't want to spend $100 on a converter box (if i can help it)... I've seen things on amazon.com for 1/2 that price or less, but again, want some recommendations from the collective wisdom of mac users.
Thanks!

Not by a long shot, many are doing it.

If you have the better white macbook with FireWire, use the FireWire port. When I switched from a USB converter to a Firewire converter (Canopus) I got better results. Many others have reported a similar experience.
If you have no FireWire port on your Mac, follow AppleMan's advice above.
These are old family home movies.
Aren't these movies important to you? Don't you want the best quality possible?

A good one is around $250.
but again, want some recommendations from the collective wisdom of mac users.
I have done lots of this.
The ADVC300 is vastly superior.
http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc300
I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08/09.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey bit it WORKS.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material.
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 08/09, why?

iMovie 08/09 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.

If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie '08 / 09, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.

iMovie 06 and iDVD 08/09 is a 100% "lossless" combination and my DVD's look like they came from Hollywood!

  • What videocamera VHS do I need to convert VHS to DVD?

Hi, I want to convert my VHS video tapes to DVD or Mpeg, I´ve been searching info, and I didn't know that I can plug a videocamera to my powerbook G4, But I don't have a VHS videocamera, so I would like to buy one, can somebody tell me what camera I need, or if any VHS camera can be plug to my computer, I want a good one but not very expensive, and If am I gonna need an extra software, or if I can do this with imovie or iDVD, and one more question, Is this the best way to convert my VHS videos to DVD?
    Thanks.

VHS (and s-VHS, Video8, and Hi8) are all analog formats and output their video as either composite (phono plug) or s-video (4 wire round connector). None of those plug directly into any newer Macintosh.
Your Powerbook has a Firewire input connection. That will transmit audio/video from a digital video camera: DV or Digital 8. This is most definitely NOT the same as what your VHS tapes can natively do.
    What to do?
I assume that your tapes are really VHS and NOT s-VHS.
    1. Let a service transfer he tapes to DV (to keep the best quality) or directly transfer to DVD. Since VHS has not more than 330 lines of resolution, DVD compression is probably OK, but if you want to edit later, you'll need to convert that over to digital video (DV) format in the computer using some software; I use DVDxDV, but there are others (dvdxdv.com).
    2. Get an old VHS dec and rent or borrow (or buy if you are going to do more video taping) a DV or Digital 8 camera with a s-video and/or composit to DV (Firewire) pass through with conversion. Some DV cameras don't have either, some only have s-video. Check out the specifications carefully. Then use iMovie or Final Cut (Pro or Express) to bring the video into your computer as a project in one of those programs. After you capture each hours worth of tape, I would export it back to DV tape immediately as a backup.
    3. Then edit that DV footage to get the "movies" you want to place on a DVD, and use iDVD or DVD SP to create those.
NOTE: If you have s-VHS or Hi8 video tapes, you should use the s-video connections; they both have about 400 lines of resolution and the composite connection can't do more than 330 lines no matter what the source is.
When I converted all of my old Hi8 and VHS tapes, I used a media converter from Sony (the DVMC-DA2); there are others. I achieve pretty good results.

  • Need Recommendation for Windows USB 802.11N Dual Band Card for AEBS

I am building a very large WiFi network to support 100 users. The plan is to use only Dual Band Airport Extreme Base Stations.
Can anyone recommend a compatible USB adapter that will work on Windows (XP, Vista, & Windows 7)?
Looking for something that has 802.11n + 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.
Any help is appreciated. (Google has been help to tell me what WON'T work... leaving me concerned that my network is going to have issues when it comes to PC users).

The one PC that is running Windows 7 which is the only PC running Windows 7, the rest are XP or Vista has a Atheros AR5007 wireless card keeps dropping connection to the airport. The computer is a HP Pavilion 1448dx. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to fix the signal drop to that computer, all of the other computers are fine.
Yes, please check with either HP or Atheros to see if there is an updated driver for the wireless card.
Another quick question: I was wondering if I could hook up my previous router (Belkin Wireless G Plus MIMO Router) to my Airport Extreme and have the PC's run off the belkin and my mac just run off the Airport Extreme and solve the issue with the one PC dropping connection.
Yes, it may be possible. The Belkin would have to be connected to the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) via an Ethernet patch cable and reconfigured as a bridge. In addition, the Belkin's wireless radio channel should be changed to one at least 3-5 channels away from the AEBSn's channel.

  • Do i need to convert my usb with windows 8.1 to read as a disc to bootcamp

I created installation media with our pc on my flash drive containing windows 8.1, and it says "The installer disc could not be found" when i try to bootcamp it.

Can you provide a link where you have read it? MacRumours has a thread, but it requires VMware Fusion Trial version (i think a link has been posted by MatRojas - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=20584499#post20584499 ).
You can try to create a partition by hand, and try it.

  • Need recommendation for analog to digital converter

I would like to transfer some VHS tapes to DVD. I know that a digital camcorder can be used as a pass-through for this, but unfortunately I don't have one. Can anyone recommend a basic converter box for converting VHS into a digital signal? I don't need anything fancy - just something to connect to the VCR and with a Firewire connection so I can import into iMovie or iDVD.
Video transfer services in this area are outrageously expensive.

Hello, I downloaded an ntfs systemfile from tuxera and used it to convert a usb stick so I could put more than the fat32 4gb on, my Imac froze a while after so I turned it off the on and now I have blue vertical lines on boot up and the a white screen with lots of tine blue symbols after, mouse pointer moves but thats about it.
Have used R and cmd to get a menu up but once I choose one of the four options my mouse is rendered useless and I cant get any further, have downloaded, to another usb stick recovery disk assisstant and am trying to use that in conjunction with the lion option on the previously mentioned screen, computer was responding really slowly and has now frozen on the terms of software license agreement (maybe the last hurdle!) can anyone pleeeeeease help!!!!!??????

It's likely that the boot drive is failing, or that there's some other hardware fault. Run the Apple Hardware Test.

Even if the test is negative, you should make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested more thoroughly.

  • What is my best hardware/software to convert vhs to digital so I can edit in Final Cut Pro X

What is my best hardware/software to convert vhs to digital so I can edit in Final Cut Pro X?  Wondering if there is a solution under 100.00 or do I need to think a bit more. Thank you.

Have been doing this for some time, my setup:
I use an ancient "Symphonic" VCR player connected to an Elgato Eyetv Hybrid USB dongle.  That plugs into my G5 Mac, 10.5.8, which runs Eyetv software v. 2.5.3.
Recording is dead simple after fiddling around a bit with software settings for channel, etc.  Start the player, hit "record" on the software and wait for the end.
The recording is saved in some obscure ".eyetv" format with file size about 4 GB per hour of recording.  The software has export to a variety of formats including QT Movie which results in a substantially larger file size.
Quality?  Well, it's viewable and usable for archive purposes.  I'm fine with it but more discriminating folks may want something better.  I end up burning the video on a DVD using iDVD and that's not the greatest anyway.
There are various Elgato units available, and the Eyetv Hybrid seems to run bout $130.
    Hope that helps.

  • Canon 60D saved footage files in H264...need to convert...is there a way to automatically shoot and save as a different codec?

    Hey,
My friend has the Canon 60D. We shot some footage and I uploaded it to my computer and saw that it was H264 codec. I now have to convert it all to ProRez Lite. I'm not too familiar with the camera but - is there a way for the Canon 60D to automatically save the files it shoots to a better codec so that when I upload them to my computer it's ready to go?
My friend only has an 8GB SD card. The stuff we would be shooting would'nt be too too much footage but if there was a way to make it save as something like Pro Rez lite where it can be editable in FC and still a decent file size that would be great.
    Thanks

Thanks for the replys. Since it's not my camera he was just letting me borrow his sd card, so I wouldn't be able to do the log and transfer thing because I won't have the camera/usb etc. But that seems like the transcoding would take some time regardless since it's still converting.
I usually use the regular Prores 422, but I mentioned trying out pro res lite cause I hear the quality is similiar and less on the file size.
I guess I will have to just deal with waiting to convert footage everytime I want to edit. It doesn't make sense to me why their default is a delivery format on a prosumer product... I can understand iphones being h264 cause they need it small compression on just planning to upload it raw to youtube or something but with a dslr which would most likely be used with editing is in a delivery codec... So is that the standard workflow with everyone to spend hours converting first?
    Thanks

  • IMovie -converting VHS and SVHS tapes to iMovie through Canopus Video Conve

When I play a VHS tape from a JVC HM-DH30000U player through the Canopus video converter in to iMovie on my Mac OX 10.5, I get a black line area about an inch at the bottom of the picture and the picture is wigglely. I have tried everything I know - under the menu in the VHS player, etc.
It was working right, I must've changed something in the menu, maybe? It plays plain VHS and S-VHS tapes the same......
Also, IMovie comes on automatically when I start my Mac. How do I stop that? I checked iMovie preferences, and Finder prefs, now what? Thanks, Marjorie

What you are seeing is the sync pulse information needed by analog TV - this information is hidden when shown on CRT TV sets because the displayed image is slightly smaller than the transmitted image. Unfortunately, the hidden 'junk' normally hidden by the CRT TV overscan becomes visible when you see the whole image on a computer monitor.

  • Software to convert VHS- DVD (w/out digital camcorder)?

    Hey everybody,
I was wondering if anybody was aware of any software for converting VHS tapes to DVD wth your Mac that is Lion-ready? I'm looking to be able to plug my VCR into my Mac and encode in real time via some sort of component to USB cable (because I don't own a digital camcorder). If you could also point me in the direction of the required hardware to complete this process that would be awesome!

  • Converting VHS to digital

I need to convert my VHS tapes to digital format to store on my mac, and n DVD's and post short clips on m Web site. I have been researching equipment to do this on C-net and it looks like the Canopus ADVC-110 is a good choice. Is it? Any comments, suggestions etc. will be much appreciated. My e-mail address is [email protected] Thanks. Art

Canopus makes close to if not nearly the best converters out there.
    Good choice.

  • I need to digitize VHS movies to an editable format to iMac.

I need to digitize VHS movies to an editable format to Mac. I've tried the Elgato Video Capture but it only works if you use it with the software that only export in mp4 format. No editable format. I need to make adjustments and cut it afterwards. I have an iMac 27 "2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 and OS X 10.8.3. IMovie '11.

I would suggest using your ElGato.
Record the video in MP4 or h.264. They should be roughly equivalent quality since h.264 is more efficient.
These will import and edit directly in iMovie.
Normally I recommend that you convert mp4 video in HD sizes to Apple Intermediate Codec before editing, but this is standard definition video so it may edit just fine as is.
If you want to convert to Apple Intermediate Codec, there are two ways. (Three ways if you have the EyeTV 3 software).
    1) Convert it using the EyeTV 3 export menu.
    2) Import to iMovie and choose Optimize - Full
    3) Drag the MP4 into MPEG Streamclip (which is a free app) and use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec for the compression. Then add to iMovie using FILE/IMPORT MOVIE.
The alternative are the Firewire-based DACs from Grass Valley. They will convert to DV, and in my experience do not produce enough qualtity difference to justify spending several humdred dollars more. After all, the original VHS is roughly 400x300 pixels, so it is never going to look like DV from a DV camera.
Personally I use the EyeTV Hybrid with the EyeTV 3 software. I do not know for sure, but I assume the EyeTV Video Capture is very similar, but without the TV Tuner.

I need to convert PDF file to Word Document, so it can be edited. But the recognizing text options do not have the language that I need. How I can convert the file in the desired of me language?

The application Acrobat provides no language translation capability.
If you localize the language for OS, MS Office applications, Acrobat, etc to the desired language try again.
Alternative: transfer a copy of content into a web based translation service (Bing or Google provides a free service).
Transfer the output into a word processing program that is localized to the appropriate language.
    Do cleanup.
    Be well...
