Need recommendation for external HD

I need one that can boot my iMac externally since my seagate goflex will automatically go to sleep whenever I boot it from there where it will shut down my Mac.

Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;

All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

Need recommendation for external DVD burner drive!

I'm one of the officers for a film club at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Recently, I discovered that we had, in our offices, a fully-functional, if not somewhat dated, iMac G4. After getting the neccessary OS X upgrades (it's now running the latest version, 10.4.8), I need to upgrade the CD drive, which is currently just a CD burner drive. It can't even play DVDs, much less burn them, both things we need to have working if we want people in our organization to be able to use this computer.
Since I don't want to physically remove the drive and replace it with an internal DVD burner drive, I'd like a recommendation for a good external one. I noticed that there's only one option on the Apple Store, the LaCie d2 DVD+/-RW Drive, and that doesn't look like it's been getting very good reviews. Does anyone have any other options I could choose from?

I have no experience of this model but this one from OWC (a company who get very good press on these boards) promises iDVD 5 and 6 support. It's somewhat cheaper than the Lacie in the Apple store but doesn't have Lightscribe.

Need Recommendation for External Mic for Skype for Macbook

I just switched to the Macbook from a Dell Latitude D600.
So far I love the Macbook but one minor problem I can't solve is that when I am on Skype calls, the person I am calling complains that there is now a strong echo.
I don't use a headset, and prefer not to. The built in speakers and mic on the D600 work very well as a speakerphone.
I'm guessing the problem on the Macbook is the placement of the speakers re the mic. Basically the speakers are firing backwards toward the microphone. On the Dell the speakers fire forward from below the palmrests and the mic is closer to the screen, so there's less feedback.
So can anyone recommend a small microphone I can plug into the microphone port (or do I have to plug into USB since this port is line-level, I've heard?) so the mic is not picking up the sound from the speakers so directly?

I had the same issue on my PowerBook G4 - the microphone line in is "line level" and most microphones put out "mic level". I purchased the Griffin "iMic" http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/ which is a mic level pre-amp through the USB port. This took care of the issue.
My newer MacBook Pro doesn't seem to have this issue, the headset I plug directly into the mic jack works.
I'm now having the issue of needing a speakerphone for Skype (which of course the mic/speakers in the laptop would work without the echo issue). Polycom makes a USB speakerphone for Skype, although comments on Amazon say it doesn't work well with OS X (gain issue on mic, humorously). I see some competing products - anyone have experience with Skype speakerphones and OS X?

I'm looking for a good and not too expensive DVD burner that works well with my PowerBook 12". Can anyone recommend one? If you need the drive to be able to boot those Macs, you'll need FireWire connectivity. If you ned to use a system optical disk to upgrade or re-install the OS. or repair your hard drive, you must boot from the optical drive. If either computer's built-in optical drive has failed, or does not support reading DVDs, you'l need to boot from an external sooner or later.
If all you need is a burner, then USB opticals are cheaper and should work fine.

Recommendations for external monitor in combination with USB 3.0 dock and X1 carbon touch

Dear Community,
I'm waiting for my X1 carbon touch and USB 3.0 dock and keyboard/mouse to arrive any time soon. However, I'd be glad to get some help/recommendations on external monitor choice.
For instance, the new HP envy 27" caught my eye, since it includes speakers, but it comes with HDMI and Displayport connections only. As far as I understood, video connection itselft shouldn't be a problem using a DVI to HDMI adaptor, but how about the resolution of the X1 vs. a HD+ monitor, and how do I use the audio on this monitor (don't want to use the microphone jack in front of the dock, as it should look as minimalistic as possible)?
Is there a solution? via usb 3.0? or should I better consider another monitor? Anyways, DVI or HDMI, I don't want to connect a separate audio system to the dock. Any recommendations, or is it one of those gadgets that has not been thought through well enough and you need to wait for the next generation to be developed?

Since you don't want to use the jack on the dock, you could usethemini-DisplayPortontheX1cTouchasyourvideooutputoption because the version of DP on the X1c Touch includes the ability for audio to streamed over the DP connection in addition to video. This would require a compatible DP monitor.
You'll also want the monitor to support audio over the DP connection. The X1c Touch's graphics supports the output of an audio stream over DP and the machine should be be capable of this. This gives you two cables connecting to the X1c Touch -- the DP cable for audio and video and the USB 3.0 cable connecting to the dock. The dock would be attached to keyboard, mouse, USB accessories, and Ethernet (if necessary).
As far as what to look for in a monitor, my general recommendation is Dell Ultrasharp. They tend to be a good deal for an IPS monitor with at least an sRGB gamut and a solid warranty. I've never bothered to attempt to stream audio over DP because I have separate speakers for audio. In the same way that my last 3 laptops have been ThinkPads, my last three monitors have been Dell Ultrasharps. The graphics in the X1c Touch should be fine running a 1920x1080, so I wouldn't worry about resolution. It can be a little jarring to use monitors side-by-side when they have different pixel densities, so you'll likely end up treating them as separate display surfaces. I often have e-mail and Pandora open on my T420's screen while I'm doing the bulk of my work on my main monitors. If you think you'll be touching the screen a good bit, then you might want to look into buying a touch capable monitor. Otherwise your brain can become easily confused because it'll begin to think that all computer screens are touch-capable and you'll reach out and try to touch your desktop monitor without thinking.

Recommendations for External DVD Burner compatible with 10.5 Leopard?

We still have an older MacBook that we bought in 2007, it works great except for the CD/DVD drive. Recommendations for external hd for Time Machine backups

After having my 1TB G-Tech G-Drive Q desktop external h.d. crap out on me for a second or third time, this time for good, I give up on G-Tech. (I also had a faulty 500GB G-Tech portable which had to be replaced.)
For many reasons, my iMac's Time Machine backups have to be stored on an external hard drive. Two or three times, the external h.d. has become corrupted or something and has had to be reformatted, losing all the previous backups and starting all over again. This time, since the external h.d. is toast, I have no backups at all.
My MAIN question: Do any of you have a recommendation for an external hard drive - probably desktop, but not necessarily - preferably 1TB - which is RELIABLE?
Is this h.d. corruption/repeated failure a function of Time Machine? The hard drive itself?
What good is Time Machine if we lose backups all the time?

Exactly. Bt you're talking about two very different things: secondary backups vs. not enough room for primary backups.
The whole point of secondary backups is having a second, separate set, so if something happens to the primary set (lost, corrupted, disk fails, etc.), you have another complete set. As noted in the link in my previous post, it's also a good idea to use a different app for the secondary set, in case there's a problem with the primary app.
If your Time Machine disk gets full, you have three choices:
Let Time Machine start deleting old backup(s) automatically, to make room for new ones. You don't need to keep them forever -- a few months should be plenty for most users.
Get a new disk and start backing-up to it. Keep the old one "on the shelf" until you're sure you don't need the old backups any longer. You can always view and restore from them via the +*Browse ...+* option, per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Get a larger disk, copy the old backups to it, and continue backing-up to the new one. See #18 in the FAQ.

NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR NEW MP3 PLAYER

I have a Clip+ and a Fuze+, but both are old and the battery will not hold a charge for very long. I've been considering the Clip Sport. I love the interface of my old Fuze+...the way all your music (internal and external drives) all show up on one list. I also saw on Sandisk.com that for the Clip Sport the higest SDHC card recommended for mp3 is 8GB. I can live with that, I guess. Does anyone find it inconvenient to go back and forth from the internal drive to the card when selecting music to play or for making a playlist? I'd really like to get a Clip Zip, but I found an grossly overpriced refurb on ebay. Does anyone know where I can find a reasonably priced Clip Zip? At less than half the price of a new one though, imo the refurbs are worth the risk, especially if you buy two of them. As for the Clip Sport, it has a limit of 2,000 songs for each of the internal memory and the card memory. I use 256 kbps mp3 for my music. It took around 14GB for me to reach the 2,000 song limit, so I use a 16GB card in my Clip Sport. A 16GB card holds around 14.6GB or so of files. The Sport can't combine songs from internal and card memory into a single playlist. I also have Clip+ and Clip Zip players which I have put Rockbox on. Rockbox is a free alternative firmware (operating system) which is available for the Clip+, Clip Zip, Fuze, and Fuze+, but not the Clip Sport or Clip Jam. Rockbox enables many additional features, and has a huge song database. Some format 128GB micro SDXC card as FAT 32, fill it with songs, and use it in a Rockboxed Clip+ or Rockboxed Clip Zip. The Clip Sport is okay if you don't have a large number of songs you want on the player. Some might buy a 4GB one for example, and use the internal storage for classical music and podcasts, and have a 16GB or 32GB card in it for rock music. If you are okay with 2,000 or fewer songs on a player, then the Clip Sport would be good for you. Yes, you could put around another 1,000 songs in internal memory at 256 kbps if you get an 8GB Sport, but then you couldn't integrate those together in a playlist with songs on the card. Depending on the average length of your songs, you might need a 32GB card to reach the 2,000 song limit, especially if your songs are at 320kbps mp3. Also keep in mind that Sandisk players(except for those that support Rockbox and have Rockbox installed on them) have trouble with cards faster than class 4, so using a Sandisk class 4 micro SDHC card is advise for maximum compatability. Some 32GB cards by other makers might cause problems in Sandisk players even if they are class 4 or slower.

Recommendations for external drive?

I'm looking for recommendations for an external hard drive to add to my iMac G5, 17" flat panel. I want to have enough GBs to use it as a backup AND to be able to store graphics such as my photos, videos and the like — all the components of making DVD movies. Ideally, I will be able to use the external to transfer things from my computer to other computers.
My G5 has a 250 GB hard drive. I'd like the external to be large enough to contain things I haven't even thought of yet.
I'm not that savvy when it comes to the workings of computers, so ease of use/simplicity is paramount.
All recommendations (and reasons why) will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Get a firewire drive and use SuperDuper! to make a clone and then regular backups (it's easy). As far as what make of drive, I have always had good luck with LaCie, and there are others who swear by Maxtor or OWC, which you can find here. In terms of size, get the largest one you can afford, in your case I would think at least 500GB. Transferring your video etc can be done to a second partition on your external drive by simply dragging and dropping the data. Partitioning is straightforward, using Disk Utility.

I am looking to acquire an external device to use with Time Machine. I have the 640GB version. Is there anything available that creates an exact replica of the Mac HD? There was at one time something called a ghost drive software that automatically created a duplicate of everything you saved. Does TM have this capability?

You can easily create an exact bootable duplicate of your internal drive. All you need is an external USB 2.0 or FireWire drive that is at least as large as the data on the drive volume being duplicated. Then use a cloning utility (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) to clone your internal drive's volume to the external drive's volume. After cloning, you can set System Preferences +Startup Disk+ pane to boot from the duplicate, to test it. It should operate just like your internal drive.
Time Machine is a completely different type of backup. It is not an exact duplicate, but a file-based backup. The power of Time Machine is that it first creates a complete backup and then incrementally backs up changes on an hourly basis, when the Mac is active. So in case of hard drive failure, your files are up-to-date to within one hour, not the last time you bothered to run a backup. You can use the Time Machine backup to restore the entire volume, or restore individual files and folders, and other data elements such as emails and contacts. In addition to restoring to the latest version (which is normally the case if you use cloning as your backup method), you can go +back in time+ to any available date/time backup state, and restore to that state.
One thing you cannot do with Time Machine is boot from the backup.

Need recommendation for bootable External HD for CCC

Hi ! I recently came to the forums to get info on how to effectively back up my mid-2010 MBP 500 Gb because according to Disk Utility I need to reformat my HD
I am currently only using Time Capsule to back up with Time Machine. I had initially decided to drag my iPhoto library, itunes, and movies (along with some other user files) to a new Seagate 500 gb GoFlex portable External HD that I had. But since I've done that, I've also done more browsing on the boards here and learned that I probably should be making a bootable clone of my HD (using Carbon Copy Cloner). That sounds like a logical idea, and Im embarassed I didn't know about it sooner. So I plan to purchase the CCC immediately and do this before it's too late. On their website they specifically say NOT to use Western Digital drives because some of them are not bootable. I also saw some comments that the Seagates "go to sleep" and probably should be avoided. I'm not sure how up-to-date those forums are so I am coming here for some recommendations/suggestions.
Before seeing those comments I had seen a few in the local stores here I was considering (WD passport, SeaGate backup plus, Toshibo Canvio Connect)...but now I'm confused.
Any suggestions for an External HD that I can use? (also, I was thinking 1 TB was a decent size to get)?

Bootable clone is very important to have, and MUCH more useful than time machine in general.
Forget about CCC, Superduper does the same thing for FREE. Download the APP SuperDuper (most use it).
Some advantages of a cloned HD:
In case of an internal HD crash and failure, there is absolutely nothing quicker to getting back to 100% operation than having a HD clone handy to either boot from, or within 20 mins. installing and removing the bad HD. Nothing to install software-wise, and a speedy immediate return to your computer use and productivity.
If you do an option key startup at boot you can directly boot to your cloned drive externally and operate from same like normal.
Sandboxing: With the help of the Cloned Drive, you can perform sandboxing, or the testing of new software, their updates and applications before they are installed on your Mac system. Moreover, if there are issues with the system, you can troubleshoot them by booting off the Clone. Many people test new APPS or experiment with a secondary clone and never worry about a failure or serious issue since the internal HD is untouched and the secondary clone can be wiped afterwards if any major issue occurs in testing. This is an invaluable tool in many instances.
If you sell you computer for purchase of a new one, you can take the clone you have on hand and install same or clone it to the new internal drive of your new Mac.
As it turns out one of the huge positive benefits of a clone is that people were seeing faster HD speeds; with APPS booting up from the clone than they had seen with the internal HD. The cloning applications in cloning the drive defragments the data to the clone and remove the “holes” in the cloning process.
With a small portable HD clone you can take your ‘computer’ anywhere to most any other current Mac and boot from your HD clone and have your entire system and its data immediately there for use. In case one is across the world and their macbook gets stolen, or damaged, with another Mac you can be up and 100% in the time it takes to boot to the new or borrowed Mac!
You can clone from your external clone to the internal HD/SSD in case of corruption.
The best thing that can be said, ideally, when your HD crashes with all its data is “so what, I’ve got a clone right here” and you can return to normal operation within seconds (by booting from the clone) or minutes (by swapping drives).
In separating out your system hub (OS) and your data hub, and storing them separately, is if you make only periodic clones (every month or so), and have a HD crash, the worst case outcome is that what is lost on your clone are some bookmarks and preferences since your data hub containing your vital files is constantly archived separately as it should be.
Disadvantages of a cloned HD:
A HD clone takes a rather long time to update since it checks all files for changes.
Ideally you would erase and create a new clone of your updated system every 2 weeks or month, which would therefore leave a gap in data integrity and OS files and system changes.
Autonomous constant data hub archiving fills this downside “gap” of HD clones, wherein which the worst that would be lost is a 2 week or one month window of application updates, or system changes irrelevant to your vital data.

Its never the WD mechanical HD itself.      None of those posts on "data corrupted .....Mavericks...HD RAID arrays" has any issue with the mechanical HD from WD

Any Recommendations for External HD to use with Time Machine?

Have been using Time Capsule wireless as my drive for Time Machine back-ups for a couple of years with mixed success. It also serves as a wireless router for internet service between all devices in my household.
Was recently recommended to me to invest in an external firewired hard drive to use for Time Machine so now I'm presented with a dilemma: Which one to choose?
Need 3 Terabytes and I'm looking at the Iomega Mac Companion (3TB) but see that Apple has discontinued selling it from its store and there's an issue with using USB and FW simultaneously.
Looking for feedback from anyone whose used this device and/or recommendations on another 3TB drive to purchase.

The one at the bottom that says 0GB is the same enclosure empty, so that you can pick a separate drive mechanism to install in it. That way you can order the exact drive you want, instead of having them choose from what they have on hand.
Wireheads will choose the 0GB and install the drive they prefer, most "regular" folks just buy it with a drive already installed and it works (after initializing) right out of the box, no assembly required.

Recommendation for external monitor

I have a G4 12" 1.5 GHz PowerBook with 768 MB of RAM, currently running 10.4.7. I'd like to buy an inexpensive external monitor, and am currently looking at a Dell 19" flat panel (model number SP1908FP). I'm pretty ignorant about monitors; I've read some of the discussions on this board, and looked at the specs for my laptop, but I'd like a confirmation before I buy it. The Dell monitor specs say 1280x1028, and although I don't actually know what that means, I see that it matches the PowerBook specs. Do I need to know anything else? And what do I need in the way of connectors? Should I be looking at other brands?

My recommendation would be to get a widescreen monitor, as I think it fits more with the Apple design.
Your 12" PB came with a mini DVI to DVI adapter (you do remember where it is?). Using this adapter, you can hook it up to a monitor that supports a DVI input, which means you can display a digital signal - the computer doesn't have to convert it to analog first. I think the digital signal produces a crisper display.
We use a 19" Samsung widescreen monitor (model 940BW) on our mac mini (not a PB, I know), and it provides a great, widescreen, digital picture. The Samsung came with the DVI cable, so we didn't have to buy one. Got it from Sam's, around $200.
On an LCD screen, I think it's important to buy locally from someplace with a good return policy. Sometimes you can get a display with dead LCD pixels, and many vendors won't take them back unless there are a fair number not working (as I recall, one vendor says there have to be at least 8 pixels not working). If you buy from the internet, make sure you understand their return policy, and ask about dead pixels indicating a defective product (if you decide you don't want it, many companies will make you pay for return shipping. Defective mechandise most vendors will pay return shipping).
