Need simple usb/firewire interface with digital in

I want the simplest, cheapest way to transfer the 44.1kHz/24bit digital output of my ProTools system into the usb or firewire port of my Mac (OS X). I don't want to convert to analog. Any ideas gratefully received!

Hi,
This post is too confusing...do you have one or two Macs? Is your PT rig on one and your "Mac(OSX)" another computer?Well, here's what I can come up with...
1. If you are using ProTools, why are you posting in a Logic Pro forum?Just thought I'd ask...
2.If it is in your Mac already, why do you want to go out of your computer and back into it? Your audio is already in your computer, simply bounce it out,and import it into the other software you want the audio to be used in...
3.If you are talking about 2 different computers, you can connect them via ehternet network and transfer your audio that way...without doing it "realtime playback."
4.If you are wanting to print your audio onto another computer...meaning what you said you wanted to do...then you could get a cheap 2 channel interface that is supported by your Mac(OSX)...whatever that is(without knowing if you have a new Intel chipset Mac or an older Mac,or a dual processor Mac,or a Quad Mac...it's hard to know what to recommend...)
I hope this helps...
Nick

  • X1 and USB Port Replicator with digital video - hangs system

    Hi
with the X1 to help with docking it everyday at the office I have a USB Port replicator with digital video. I am not using the digital video but the USB ports, head phone and mics plus ethernet.
When I plug it in it detects it OK, I then installed the software. But after reboot it looks to stall when logging into windows, screen flickers back and forth and locks up the operating system. I unlplug it and reboot and window is working fine.
Note as I mentioned I am not using the digital output but instead using an external monitor via the display port on the back of the laptop.
Also its is very slow to boot (Lenovo bios splash screen is there for about a minute)
I have gone into the bios and turned off all other bootable devices just leaving the laptops hard drive.
As a work around I have removed the software and I am getting the basic functionality of the port replicator, but not the ethernet.
I have run the update manager but does not appear to show a need to update the drivers.

Hi, I have this same exact problem.
Video (anything from youtube to downloaded shows, movies) will freeze for 5-7 seconds at a time. The sound continues to play while the video is 'frozen', and the video resumes after that.
It will happen on its own, with no bumping, but it is more prone to happen if I do something like increase the volume within the media player.
    Any suggestions are much appreciated!

  • USB/Firewire Interface for MIDI and audio (Garage Band)

I want to connect a Roland Handsonic (electronic drum) and Shure microphone to a Mac Pro for recording in Garage Band. What is the best USB/firewire interface for MIDI and audio?

That's not what you asked for B-)>
Once you want more than 2 audio inputs, the prices start jumping up dramatically.
would this be the best interface to use?

  • Thinkpad USB Port Replicator with Digital Video - extended monitor shows only mouse icon

    Hi,
I have been using my Thinkpad USB Port Replicator with Digital Video for quite a long time with my previous employer laptop. I recently switched job and got a new laptop (Dell XPS 3, Win 8.1). While installing/paring this laptop with the port replicator, I had some issues e.g. extended monitor not getting identified etc. I updated the drivers and now I am able to identify the extended monitor. But the extended monitor shows only the mouse icon and nothing else. I have upto date Intel HD graphics drivers installed in the laptop. Intel's Graphics control panel doesn't show the extend option for the USB monitor, but able to still move the mouce icon to the extended monitor.
Any help/pointers to fix this issue is highly appreciated.

I have the exact same problem on my W510. Everything but the screen Works. I cannot however do duplicate screens. That would help a Little bit, so I could use the big monitor instead of just the laptop.
    Please fix this Lenovo!

can i use my usb audio interface with apple tv? For example Focusrite 2i2

Afraid not - AppleTV does not support USB audio devices.
I assume you don't mean using the device as an optical input for the computer, connecting AppleTV's optical out to it.

  • USB Audio Interface with bad latency problems under bootcamp

    Hi everyone,
I am currently running an Edirol UA-25 USB audio interface under Mac OS X for my normal music-listening needs. Everything works fine, and there is next to no latency when messing around in Garageband .
However, when I switch into bootcamp to use Cubase SX 3 for audio production and sequencing (has all my windows-only VST instruments), the interface pops and crackles extremely. It's almost as if the USB interface is losing sync..?
When I turn the buffer up on the drivers, this stops, but it is annoying as I like to have low latency when recording for direct monitoring.
Can anyone give me any insight into why this might be happening?
I know this is an audiophile-type question, but I thought I might as well give it a go. Or heck, if you wanna direct me somewhere where they might be able to help me!
    Cheers!
    Chris
    P.S. Using a MBP 2.5GHZ 2GB RAM

when you select , lets say the USB device in your audio preferences, it will be used as the input and output device. You can use the USB interface's audio outs plugged into your mixer, and use speakers or the headphone jack. When you create an aggregate device, using the USB device and your built in audio, and choose it in your audio preferences, this allows you to use the inputs and outputs of both the USB interface and your built in audio from your mac. So now you can record from one device while listening back on another. meaning you can record the audio from the USB device and listen back using your Mac speakers or from headphones plugged into your mac.
if you get a better audio interface, one with mic inputs, you will still need to connect it to speakers or plug in headphones to it to hear audio. If you have the budget, a dedicated firewire audio interface will usually give better results, in audio quality, than a behringer mixer and a usb interface.

  • External usb/firewire interface

    Hi,
I'm thinking of using getting an external USB Audio Interface, and would like some suggestions about products that work well with logic express and my Macbook Pro.
I need something that will allow all my band to hook at once (at least 5 inputs) and hear, with headphones, at the same time (at least 5 outputs).
I was considering the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra.
    Has anyone tried it?

I would second using a Firewire interface, I've had both USB and Firewire and found the latter to be far more steady. I think you would find a lot of people would warn you away from the M-audio interfaces, their drivers are famously poor. Presonus makes some really solid interfaces with great pre's. The Firestudio or FP-10 go for $300-$500 depending on where you shop and how good you are at talking salespeople down. From personal experience I would spend the extra money on the new Firestudio, I've been very happy with the one I've been working with.

  • Harddisk & Airport conection USB/Firewire  - problem with connetion

So I bought the Airport Express and wanted to connect my Lacie Firewire HD with it. But since it is a FireWire - I guess I need a converter to go from firewire to USB2.
Is that possible? ..and where can I get a converter?

There is no such thing as a USB to FireWire converter. You will need a hard drive with a USB connection.

  • I need a USB/FireWire ethernet adapter

About 6 months ago my ethernet port was fried when a lightning bolt sent a surge through the wire. Since then i have been using my family's wireless network, but now that I am back in school and away from home, i don't have that luxury. So, i've been looking for a Mac compatible USB/FireWire ethernet adapter and have had no luck. If anyone knows where I can find one, let me know.

  • Need simple class for communicating with Solaris account

Hey, gang. After over a week of searching this forum and the Web for a solution, I'm stuck. I hope someone here can help.
I've got a Java application intended to run on both Windows and Solaris systems that needs to perform the following automated operations:
    1. Connect to a user account on a Solaris server.
    2. Login.
    3. Run an sccs command.
    4. Retrieve the output from the sccs command.
I can run commands (such as sccs) directly from Java; I've worked out how to do that. My situation is that I need to run sccs from an authorized account so that all file checkin/checkout operations are tagged properly. So the requirement to connect to a server isn't one I can ignore. I also don't need a full-up interactive client interface -- this needs to be an automated process.
What I'm hoping is that someone here will be willing to provide (or point me to) some relatively simple source code I can call to do this stuff. Maybe an example of a class that uses Socket and a couple of streams to programmatically connect to a server, send commands, and capture input. That's really all I need.
I've tried calling the Jakarta Commons telnet class to connect to the Solaris server, but it's more overhead than I need. (Plus the input stream kept blocking when I tried to use it in a purely automated mode.) I've also tried rolling my own code using the minimal info available on Google, but have not been able to figure out the magic words necessary to get anything back but gibberish. (InputStream and BufferedReader just do not seem to want to cooperate. Either I get back only garbage text, or readLine() or read() gets nothing and just sits and waits until the timeout.)
So I turn to the experts here. If anyone can offer (or direct me to) any simple, non-libraried source code that enables my Java code to connect to and talk to a Solaris machine, I'd be grateful.
    Thanks!

I was hoping a separate server-side process wouldn't be needed -- if you're thinking of something like RMI, that's also a bit heavyweight for my needs. I know I can talk to the remote server on telnet port 23, though.
Further experimentation today with the Jakarta net library has generated something that works using their telnet classes. (After I asked for help here, of course. The same thing happens when I shop for groceries....) But using this leaves me referencing an external library that:
    1. has functionality I don't need that complicates the code, and
    2. forces me to address licensing requirements.
So I'd still love to see an example of a telnet-like Java class that strips away all the non-essentials in the Jakarta telnet library code, leaving behind a simple public domain class that can be used to connect to a remote host and transfer characters over that connection.
I appreciate that this may be asking for a lot, but as they say, if you don't ask, you don't get. ;-)
    Thanks!

  • Using Two Firewire Interfaces with Logic?

I'm using a Duet which of course has no digital outs.
I'm thinking of getting a guitar processor that has digital outs, so I was wondering if there was a way to buy yet another interface for use just when I am doing guitar tracks direct so I could go into the Mac all digital, via SPDIF or whatever. I would have to tell Logic to switch to the other interface for guitar tracks I guess.
If this is possible, is there anything that doesn't cost and arm and leg that would handle this well?
    Thanks
    Tom

Easiest way to do this is to create an Aggregate Device in AudioMidi Setup. Unfortunately, the Duet is not supported with aggregate devices. Another possibility is to simply switch your driver to something else than the Duet when you want to record your guitar tracks. However, you won't be able to monitor through the Duet if you do that. My personal choice would to simply plug the analog outputs of your guitar processor into your Duet. And if you still want to use your digital outs, there's an optical input on your Mac. However, you'll need a converter from S/PDIF to Toslink, somethin like M-Audio CO2:

  • I need a usb-firewire solution. running out of ports!

    Hi,
THe two usb ports supplied on my MBP are not enough and i already have a powered usb hub connected to each port, further connecting several devices and hdds!
now simple things like making a TM backup are running slow because of like 2 to 3 hdds connected to hubs on each port.
my firewire port has been lying latent and i was wondering if there was some sort of a hub that would connect to my mac's firewire and inturn allow me to connect usb 2 or 3 devices on its interface?
i'm sure that if a usb 2 port can take extensions of 7 and 10 devices via hubs, a firewire port running at 800 mpbs could take much more traffic.
if there is an ethernet based solution, then that would be even better! cause there i would have a 1gbps bandwidth to spare.
please link me to the right product please. google confuses me and i can make out from the specs as to how the hubs it lists, work.
    thanks for stopping by.

Hi JMF, I had the same issue as you, but I found a USB drive that does fit next to a standard sized USB cable. It is a Verbatim USB Mini Swivel and comes in sizes from 1GB to 8GB. You can get these through the Online Apple store. Hope this helps.

  • Suggestions for Higher End USB/Firewire Interface

I am looking for a pretty good quality interface that will let me record at least 2 tracks (stereo minijack doesn't seem to record to seperate tracks yes?) - but preferrably 4 or 8 tracks at a time into GarageBand.
One thing I've seen is this m-audio w/ 4 inputs but it looks lousy for Macs by the reviewers' accounts. http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-FireWire-410-Recording-Interface/dp/B0000TP588/sr= 1-11/qid=1172259647/ref=sr111/105-2727921-4590048?ie=UTF8&s=electronics
I have a Macbook pro. I also have a pretty nice 16 channel Mackie board -- but no way to get multiple tracks into GarageBand. Are there interfaces that are simply conduits to multiple tracks without the need for pricey pre's that I have in the mixer?
    Budget = up to $400 or $500.
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

are there more mobile, non-rack options?
Can you explain what the problem is with the FirePod? I find it very mobile because I have not mounted it in any of our racks, I just pick it up and take it where I need it (jsut because it CAN be rack mounted doesn't mean you have to do so B-)>.
It's a fantastic interface and at a decent price for what it has.

  • Do I need a router to interface with my wireless laptop and printer, or can booth tooth.

Im having a problem interfacing the HP B210 all in one wireless printer to my ASUS wireless Laptop. Do I need a router or can I some hoe make the wireless connection using my blue tooth on my laptop. Please help.

Well, the printer does not have bluetooth so that will not work.
However, you can connect to it directly via wi-fi on your laptop.  From the front of the printer go to: Setup > Network > Restore Network Defaults.
Now, on your PC, look for a wireless network beginning with "HP".  Join it.  There is no password.
Now, go to Control Panel > Printers and Add a Printer.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.
