Need some advice about possibly getting a MacBook Pro

I have been offered retail price for my 3 month old PB 17" (see description below). If I decided to do it, I would turn around and buy the new MacBook Pro. I love my PB and really hadn't thought about getting the MacBook Pro because I just got this laptop. I do have some accessories that I wouldn't be able to use on the new latop (FW800 2.5" hard drive and EVDO broadband internet pccard to name a couple). A couple of reasons that I can think of that I wouldn't like to switch are reduced screen size (although due to the better brightness, I could probably deal with it), reduced DVD Drive (although I have yet to burn using Dual Layer), etc. I have been reading about how some people like this or that about the MacBook Pro, but I was curious to get everyone's opinion on a switch from a very new laptop. I am leaning against doing the deal, but would love the input. I don't use it for major video editing, although I do a little, but only for home/family movies. Mainly, it is used for my everyday portable workstation. I do make a living using my computer (I repair computers, mac and pc) so something speedy is a must, but it seems to me that I have suffcient speed already. Well, enough of my rambling, any input would be great.
Thanks in advance,
GeNomeZ

Well, I have a 15" PowerBook G4 as well, the recent high res one that came out in October. I'm taking the plunge but as you can see below I haven't received mine yet so I can't give you too much of my opinion. I did it more for the processor, iSight, the ir for Front Row, the video card, the faster ram, the faster fsb, uhhhh, I could go on. I'll probably notice the 60 pixel loss but I'll deal, I can deal w/o dual layer, ***** about the speed drop, I never used fw800 or the pc card slot. And dial up doesn't exist to me

    I need some advice about the macbook pro and iPhone 5.
    I took a video on my iPhone and tried to email it it said it was too big to send? So i downloaded it to my macbook pro and tried to mail it to no avail? The macbook tells me the server won't let it through other mail goes through any ideas how to resize it or what it might take to send it?

    I agree with LowLister, the best option for you to share the video online is to upload it to your online storage account for example : Box, Dropbox, SkyDrive (All of them provide free storage beginning from 2GB).
    You can upload the files which you want to share in this online storage and then they have sharing options in which you'll will get the link of the file to be sent and send the email. You're good to go!
    Tip : You can store multiple files for backup purposes.

  • Need some advice about hot backup under linux

    hi, I want some advice about db files hot backup between two machines(Named A and B).A is primary machine which will write and read database and have the lastest db file. B is backup role and no database file in it.
    Now I want hot backup A's db file to B in order to B have the lastest db file too.
    At A,my db file support transaction and environment, and I set autoremove unnecessary log files.
    The code such as follows:
    dbenv->set_flags(dbenv, DB_AUTO_COMMIT |DB_LOG_AUTOREMOVE | DB_TXN_WRITE_NOSYNC, 1);
    ret = dbenv->open(dbenv, NULL,
    DB_CREATE | DB_INIT_LOCK | DB_INIT_LOG | DB_INIT_MPOOL | DB_INIT_TXN ,0)
    I don't want to use db_hotbackup utility. and db_hotbackup may be backup files to the same machine with different dir.
    How can I make machine A's db files backup to machine B.
    Thanks for your help.
    Best Regards

    Hi Hangsy
    Now I want hot backup A's db file to B in order to B
    have the lastest db file too.What do you mean? Do you want to have the latest version... from when you did the latest backup, or you want to keep it updated in the same time with the main database?
    I don't want to use db_hotbackup utility. and
    db_hotbackup may be backup files to the same machine
    with different dir.You can copy the backup anywere you want.
    If you want to run recovery on a different machine, it must be the same pointer size and endianness as the original machine.
    Database and log file archival: http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/ref/transapp/archival.html
    It is usually simpler to take the hot backup on the main machine and run recovery there before copying the databases to the remote system.
    In this setup, only the databases are required on the remote system, not the log files.
    Since you are using NOSYNC, you should run a checkpoint which will ensure you that the database files are up to date.
    Please read "Recovery procedures" ( http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/ref/transapp/recovery.html ) first. "you cannot perform a hot backup of databases and log files, restore the backup and then run normal recovery -- you must always run catastrophic recovery when using hot backups."

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    You have got a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro and the log shows that the NVIDIA GPU is damaged.
    These MacBooks Pro have got a defective GPU that may cause unexpected restarts, black screens, kernel panics, etc. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
    Apple is repairing all these MacBooks for free if they were purchased less than 3 years ago, so make a backup of your files onto an external drive with Time Machine and take the computer to an Apple Store or reseller.

  • Need some advice about upgrading my RAM.

    I own a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5.
    I use Final Cut Pro 5 and want to make some upgrades to my Memory.
    I've already got 2 GB DDDR2 SDRAM, and I'd like to add 2 GB more.
    I found this webpage, but being naive at this stuff, I thought I'd run this by the experts here...
    http://www.memorystore.com/product.asp?modelid=18738&famid=132&oemdesc=2GB+Kit&q ty=2
    I was thinking of getting the Samsung brand, as I heard it was exactly what Apple uses.
    I was also confused because I got my G5 in summer of 2006, and I can't be sure which model number I have. All I can guess is I have the "Late 2005" model.
    Thanks anyone for the help.
    Sincerely,
    yoshi

    Hi-
    I'm gonna save you a bunch of money (and possible headache), and direct you to guaranteed Mac compatible RAM.
    The page lists RAM for the dual core Late 2005 G5..
    Check your system profiler, under Memory, and confirm that you have DDR2 PC4200 memory installed.
    You can confirm your memory needs on this page, and confirm your G5 model using the serial number tag, described in this document.

  • I need some advice about using Leopard on a Power Mac G5

    I purchased a Power Mac G5 (Dual 2.3) in 2006. I have 2 internal hard drives and am currently running Tiger and Leopard. Some of my current apps that are outdated don't run on Leopard (such as Office 2004). I am thinking about switching over completely to Leopard, so I would have to upgrade my remaining apps that need to be updated.
    Is it worth it? Does Leopard (and modern applications) run smoothly on a G5 or are those really intended for Intel Macs? Would it be better for me as a PowerPC user to just stick with Tiger? Are the versions of iTunes and QuickTime available in Leopard the same available in Tiger?
    I really don't need Classic anymore, so that's not holding my back. But I don't want to spend the money to upgrade my applications if they aren't going to work that well on a G5 anyway.

    Actually, Office 2004 runs just fine on Leopard. That's what I'm running now, and I have no intention on going to Office 2008.
    I feel that Leopard runs smoothly on the G5. I've not really seen any issues with it as of yet.
    iTunes and QuickTime are the same version number under Leopard as they are under Tiger. However, there is a different download of QuickTime depending on if you're on Tiger or Leopard.
    What other applications are you using that you think you may need to upgrade?

  • Need some advice about cross browser display

    Hi, I'm still trying to master css design and having a few
    problems getting my pages to look the same on Opera and FF. I'm not
    sure where I'm going wrong.
    The site looks pretty much how it's meant to in IE (though
    still in draft stage), but all sorts of gaps and spaces appear in
    the other browsers that ruin the look.
    Also in the 'restauraunts' 'shopping' and 'things to do'
    pages the content drops way down on the page and I don't know why
    that is either.
    http://www.sorrentoquay.com.au/new_index.html
    ps: I know I have a 916px image (the dropshadow) which is
    causing the content to drop way down the page in FF and Opera, but
    this is supposed to be in column with the content column lining up
    along side it. It's doing what it's meant to do in IE.
    I appreciate the responses so far, thankyou.

    You must have fixed the original problem, because I don't see
    any dropping
    content in FF as I did when you posted originally.
    However, your 'shadow' is not going all the way down the page
    as it does in
    IE7. Have you thought about moving that image out of the html
    as using it
    as a background image in that dive and repeating it on the
    'y' axis)... may
    also solve some of the gap problems you may be seeing, though
    I can't see
    them this time roung.

  • Need some advice about Mail Preferences and Rules

    Several months ago, I created a rule in Mail 2.1.3 for my mailboxes that would filter out some of the SPAM that I get on my laptop. I indicated that I only wanted to receive messages from people in my address book.
    As it turns out that was not a great decision, and now I'm missing mail from people that comes right through on our "family" PC running Outlook. I tried to change that rule, but I didn't remember how I had done it. I searched help and found the instruction: Click Mail, Click Preferences, Click Rules.
    However, when I get into Preferences, I don't see Rules anywhere. I only have ACCOUNTS, MAILBOX BEHAVIORS, and ADVANCED. I don't see rules on any of those tabs. Clearly, I had the power before. Can someone please (pretty please) tell me what I'm missing now?
    I would greatly appreciate any advice that you can give.
    Thanks!

    You must have inadvertently clicked on the small gray oval in the upper right-hand corner of the Preferences window sometime in the recent past. Doing so toggles between showing/hiding icons for General, Accounts, ..., Signatures, and Rules.

  • Need some advice about PersistenceManger.

    Is there any disadcantage of using ONE persistenceManager for whole
    application?
    I have this program which is managing Student data, which consist of
    Student, Info, Adress object.
    When each object is loaded with different PersistenceManager,
    I have trouble do the following:
    student.setInfo(info);
    // or
    info.setAddress(address);
    I got an exception saying that they are managed by different
    PersistenceManger.
    I can't think of any way but have them use SAME persistenceManager.
    Which means ONE persistenceManager for whole program.
    But I am worry about if it will cause any problem.
    What would you do?
    Thanks.

    Multiple transactions are a headache with a single persistence manager. I've
    tried a single PM for an entire program and found it to be extremely
    difficult to work around. Plus, I hated the idea of having a singleton
    object (i.e. PM) that everyone had to share.
    You can solve the problem of sharing objects across PM's a number of ways.
    My two favorite ways are to:
    Pass object ID's from thread to thread. i.e. if there are any Queue's or
    Messages sent between threads, use:
    Object id = pm.getObjectID(myObj);
    queue.enqueue(id);
    Object newID = queue.dequeue();
    MyObj newObj = (MyObj )pm.getObjectById(newID);
    Another option is to pass the actual objects around and then at the
    beginning of the method, get local instance of the object. Generally, this
    can be done:
    infoPM = JDOHelper.getPersistenceManager(info);
    infoID = infoPM.getObjectID(info);
    myInfo = pm.getObjectById(infoID);
    student.setInfo(myInfo);

    Ok i just bought this iPod nano in black and i got this case for it. It is rubber and gray...anyway i took the case off the other day and there was this filmwith some splotchy stuff on it around the front near the clickwheel. I was wondering if u guys had any sugestions on how to get the surface back to normal without damaging the internal workings of the iPod...THANKS

    Hi Whiteshaq4,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    Knowledge Base Document #61119 says:
    "To clean iPod, unplug all cables and cords and set the Hold switch to Hold. Then use a soft, damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings.
    Don't use aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, or abrasives to clean iPod."
    Some people do recommend iKlear Cleaning Kit.
    I hope that helps,

  • [AS] Need some advice about baseline

    I'm tired of "cuts" such that it:
    With an annual global production of roughly 5,000
    GW, it forms a fundamental component of […]
    You see that the 5,000 is not on the same line as the GW.
    So, I wrote a script whose
    - find a digit, a space, a character
    - in a different baseline.
    I wrote this, but is not very fast…
    So, I wonder if it is not possible to find a solution with a "whose"… Something like:
              set theSequences to (object reference of every item of theFind where baseline of character 1 is not baseline of character -1)
    set theList to {}
    set myText to ""
    set thebounds to {0, 0, 150, 150}
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS5.5"
         set myDocument to active document
         set myWindow to active window
         set find grep preferences to nothing
         set position of find grep preferences to normal
         set find what of find grep preferences to "\\d+ ."
         tell myDocument
              set theFind to find grep
         end tell
         set find grep preferences to nothing
         repeat with aSequence in theFind
              tell aSequence
                   try
                        if baseline of character 1 is not baseline of character -1 then
                             set Pagenumber to the name of parent page of parent text frames of aSequence
                             set myParentPage to parent page of parent text frames of aSequence
                             set end of theList to "page: " & Pagenumber & " | " & aSequence & return
                        end if
                   end try
              end tell
         end repeat
         set myText to every item of theList as Unicode text
         set theBlack to swatch "Black" of myDocument
         tell page 1 of myDocument
              set theFrame to make text frame with properties {geometric bounds:thebounds, contents:myText, fill color:theBlack, fill tint:20}
              -- This is a detail
              tell text frame preferences of theFrame
                   set text column count to 3
                   set text column gutter to 3
              end tell
         end tell

  • Need some advice about Threads/ThreadPools

    Hello,
    I am writing an application that tests websites for certain tags, keyword density and so on.
    To simplify I created a framework that will run plugins on given webpages. I also built in support for a so called XML Sitemap (https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/docs/en/protocol.html). To speed this up I created a worker and a runner class. They both implement the Runnable interface (I suspect that I should extend Thread with the worker and that the Runner is good as is). However the program uses a significant amount of memory. I suspect that Threads aren't recycled properly so I plan on rewriting it a bit to use a FixedThreadPool.
    I call my Threads as:
    //In "main" class
    new Thread(worker).start();
    //In Worker class
    for(URL url : urlList) {
      //do stuff
      if(currentNumThreads >= maxThreads){
        //Thread.yield in while loop -- Dirty ?
      new Thread(runner).start();
    }Do these Threads get recycled immediatly after finishing ?
    Also would using a ThreadPool improve performance/memory usage ?
    Thanks in advance :)

    Edited by: hms on Jan 17, 2008 2:05 PM

    First of all, do not Extend Thread!
    Second yes using a ThreadPool will help your problem because you are spawning a 'infiinite' number of threads otherwise. I would suggest using an Executor class if you are in SE 5.0 or above. They do the job quite well for what you want to get done.

  • Songs disappearing. Need some advice.

    I need some advice regarind my ITunes library. I spent a lot of time importing all my cd's. I now have approx. 14,000 songs now. First I had put them all in as mp3's, then I heard about the quality and smaller size of AAC. I think that is where some duplicates came from. But some how I've ended up with up to 6 of a lot of my songs, at least it is showing 6 copies of many of my song in my ITunes library. But when I go to delete all but one of the songs, through ITunes, sometimes it is fine and sometimes I get the ! icon. I guess even though I left one in Itunes it actually deleted all copies. I did not know I was doing this because it doesn't show the ! icon until you go back and try to select the song. This took days and days to deleted over 6,000 duplicates.
    Now I'm finding some albums are missing songs and some are missing the whole albums even though they show in Itunes. I even have gone through and tried to "FIND" the songs some are really there but most are not. So how to I go about reconstructing the library. Is it best to try and find each one or just wipe (delete) my library clean and just reimport the entire library? I'm talking about reconstructing approximately 12,000 songs and I have no idea how many cd's.
    I just would like to know how you guys would handle this. Thanks for your help.

    Need some advice....I just bought the new retina MacBook Pro (2,199 model) and after reading about the ghosting or burn in issues that some users are experiencing I am starring to wonder if I made the right decision.  I am still waiting for my laptop to come in so I can still cancel my order.  I'm seriously considering opting for the non-retina MacBook Pro instead.  This will be my first Mac and I will mainly be using it to browse the web and do photo editing (I'm an amateur photographer) I know the non-retina doesn't not come with SSD and wondering how much of difference that makes.  Any advice, suggestions will be welcomed
    That's incorrect:
    Order online and for a fee you can have an SSD.

  • I'd like to get a new computer but I'm not certain about getting a Macbook Pro vs a Windows PC Helpppppppppppp

    I'm shopping for a new computer.  I've been a Windows user for a long time now.  I've been shopping for a laptop so I can be portable.  I really like the design and features of the Macbook Pro with Retina and it would do what I need it to do for audio recording and other things musically.  I've been told by musician friends that its much easier to work with a Macbook Pro when it comes to audio recording, photos, and movie making.  I've read this in many articles online as well.
    I'm convincing myself more each day to get a Macbook Pro, but that reservation keeps holding me back because of my Windows experience.  I know I can purchase Parallels or VMWare Fusion 5 and run Windows so what I am worried about it? lol
    I'd like to read some feedback on those Mac users that converted over from Windows.  How has your experience been with a Macbook Pro?  I like the idea that Apple will be bringing the manfacturering of their systems to the USA.  I also like the fact that Apple does their own research to build great products for all consumers to enjoy.  I guess that's why the products cost so much.  You're paying for care and quality.
    Ok Mac users honestly convince me that I'm making a solid and sound decision by diving into a Macbook Pro.
    Thanks and take care,

    I have used PCs for years, and still do at work.  But, last year my wife bought me a 15" MBP with the anti-glare screen (I was getting ready to buy for myself).  It took me all of 1 week to completely get used to the UI for OS-X, and now I really prefer it over the Win7 UI.  I have no experience with Win8.  Here are my thoughts:
    1) You can get a good computer using either a Win8 machine or a Mac.
    2) You will pay less for an equivalent PC.  But not as much less as some would have you believe.  You need to take into account the all aluminum body of the Mac (vs most PCs being plastic) and the size of the display.  And, don't forget that there is a lot of bundled SW on the Mac that you will actually find useful and would have to purchase for the PC.
    3) You can probably do everything you need on the PC platform with the right SW (you probably already know this since you are using one already).
    That said, I think some things are easier on the Mac.  For example, GarageBand is a standard part of the Mac SW installation.  I got up and running recording directly from my bass into a track with a song imported from iTunes on another track in a snap.  I only had to purchase a Jam adapter ($99) for the bass so I could come in over USB instead of using the audio in port (which did work, by the way).  You can do the same on a PC, but you have to purchase the SW from somewhere.  And, it probably isn't cheap.
    I use VMware Fusion to run those Win programs I already owned because it was much less expensive to buy Fusion than to replace them.
    I would not return to a PC for my own use, given a choice.  But, I would be very careful about getting my wife a Mac without careful thought as she is not as tolerant of learning new things as I am.
    So, there you go.

  • I need some advice...

    Hi, I'm not quite sure where this topic should go exactly as it isn't about a specific topic. So plz fogive me if it's wrongly placed in your opinion.
    Anyway, I've been a long time fan of Linux and I don't want to have to stop using it. I've just recently converted my whole computer to a linuxbox only system, as I was running winxp(uke) before and couldn't stand it. It would lag during simple tasks like going from one directory to another and for no apparent reason, which aided me in my conversion. Enough about winblows, I don't need to tell you guys why it sucks, we all have our reasons. But there is just one thing bothering me now... and that is gaming. I am a huge fan of gaming and have been doing so for quite some time now (years) and well... gaming on linux hasn't been too pleasant for obvious reasons.
    1) the games I play except for quake3 are written and made to run solely on a winblows workstation.
    2) Wine and Winex3 have limited, but growing support for a range of games.
    3) Lastly the main game I would like to play (Steam CS 1.6) doesn't like to run on linux due to its constant updates, which throws WInex3 out of wack. Where it could have been working the day before but due to the update it no longer runs.
    I'm thinking of just making a partition for winxp(uke) so that I can game, but this isn't something I'm totally willing to do.
    Basically I need some advice and/or suggestions that anyone is willing to share with me.
    Thank you in advance.
    BTW: I'm not new to linux, I've been using it for almost 2 years now and have tried ALL of the distro's you can think of. (Arch is my distro of choice at the moment, along with slackware.)

    Enemy Territory is an excellent game, and it is totally free.
    I haven't played the free game from the US Army, but heard it is really good, and is totally free.
    I bought Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which plays perfectly in Single player mode, but I have some trouble in multiplayer mode (and I'm not an expert either).
    I bought Unreal Tournament 2004, which plays perfectly in both single player and online, but I simply suck at the game.
    I bought Never Winter Nights because I know the company has a linux version you can download once you have a registered copy.  I havent installed it yet, though, been playing UT2004.
    Doom3 is supposedly going to have a linux installer on the CD's, like UT2004 does.
    Anygame that uses OpenGL graphics instead of DirectX will prolly run under WINE or WINEX, or be easy for the original company to port (if they choose to).
    There are some "up and coming" linux only OpenGL games, light flightgear (a flight simulator), and a couple of 'massive online games".
    Betweet RTCW, EnemyT, Never Winter Nights, UT2004, and soon Doom3 - I have enough games to play, and thats without buying winex.
    Fergettabout Windows! You simply don't need it anymore.
    If you are determined to run Windows, get a removeable drive bay, and just swap boot drives when you want to swtich.  Or use GRUB if you want to select from multiple OS's.
